Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hi, I'm Tammy, your
host of Truckin'.
With Tammy, today we are goingto answer the question for new
CDL drivers what do I pack andhow do I pack it?
I get this question a lot.
In the last few days I'veactually been talking to a new
driver out of Texas that iswaiting for her trainer so she
(00:26):
can go out on the road, andwe've been going back and forth
about what she should pack andhow she should pack it.
So I thought, well, I'm goingthrough all this anyway, I'm
going to go ahead and share thatinformation with all of you.
So when all the new students goout there and start researching
it, they have a resource.
So when you're going out on aroad with a trainer, you have to
(00:49):
keep in mind that you will besharing a truck with somebody
else and that somebody else thattrainer generally lives in
their truck full time.
For most companies, I mean, there are exceptions to the rule
, like Walmart, where they gohome at the end of the every
week, or, if you're withsomebody, that is a home daily
(01:10):
account.
But for the most part, most ofthe trainers are over the road
trainers who are in that truckfull time.
So you want to be respectful oftheir space, and sometimes
there's not a lot of space to berespectful of.
So how do we make it work?
How do we pack up our liveswhen we could be out on the road
for weeks to months at a time?
(01:30):
Well, you've got to be prettythrifty.
So my recommendation and thisis not a must be this way.
This is my recommendation as afemale driver and a prior
trainer.
I recommend having three bags.
You're going to have a showerbag, you're going to have a
(01:51):
clothing essential bag andyou're going to have a bag with
all your bedding in it, and I'mgoing to break that down for you
.
So the first bag that we'regoing to take a look at is our
shower bag.
This is the stuff that keeps usclean, keeps that hygiene on
point and has all our girlystuff or guys stuff Sorry, guys
(02:14):
Um in it that we need.
So you have I recommend abackpack, because you're going
to be going from the truck tothe shower with this, carrying
it back and forth, and backpacksare just the easiest,
especially, um, if you'recarrying anything else with you.
Uh.
So what do we put in this bag?
Well, no doubt your hygienestuff, right?
(02:35):
So shampoo and conditioner, um,me, right now.
I'm home every week, so myshampoo and conditioner are in
these cool little things.
I have shampoo, conditioner andbody wash.
A lot of you going out in atrainer truck is not going to
have the luxury of being homedaily or weekly, so you'll
probably want full bottles andthose full bottles you'll want
(02:59):
to put into a zippered baggie sothat if they leak they're not
going to get over everythingelse, right?
So, shampoo, conditioner, bodywash If you're a loofah person,
a loofah.
If you're a wash rag person,washcloth person, you'll want
some washcloths.
And you also want baggies forthose when they're wet, so
they're not getting everythingelse wet, right.
(03:19):
So you're going to learnbaggies.
Good thing, baggies are good.
Toothbrush you want yourtoothbrush.
You want your toothpaste.
You want your alcohol.
Most companies preferalcohol-free mouthwash.
Did I say alcohol?
I meant mouthwash, alcohol-freemouthwash, and I'm not going to
(03:40):
go back and edit this.
So those are very, those arevery important.
Uh, dental floss you'll wantyour floss.
Um, I buy these.
They're super cool threaders,uh, but you'll want that.
Uh, hairbrush, you'll want yourhairbrush.
Uh, whatever.
(04:01):
So if you use any other hairproducts that you need hairspray
, mousse, little travel sizesare great hairbrush, hair bands,
ponytail holders if you are aperson that likes their face,
stuff your moisturizers veryimportant.
(04:22):
Your skin gets very dry in thetruck or lotions Guys, that's
for you too.
Get your lotions.
You will want shower shoes.
Again.
You're going to be showering atterminals and truck stops where
hundreds of other people areshowering every day.
You don't know what they'rebringing in.
You don't know what's on theirfeet, so you want to make sure
(04:43):
that you protect your littletoesies.
Okay, uh, you'll also want, uh,any female, female hygiene
products, um, that you're goingto use, and body wipes and when
I say body wipes, I mean forwashing your hands, for cleaning
your face.
We get so dirty out here thatduring the day before you're
(05:04):
able to get that shower, you'regoing to want to clean up grease
and grime off of your hands andstuff.
So we go through a lot of bodywipes in this industry.
You're also going to want tobring your own set of towels.
Some, a lot of the truck stopsprovide towels, but again, you
don't know what they were usedfor before.
(05:25):
You don't know if they wereused to clean up the floor and
the toilet before they threwthem in the wash.
I don't risk it, I bring my owntowel.
I want only, you know, I justcan't imagine somebody else's
butt being when I go to dry myface, right, so bring your own
towel.
Um, if you're on any medications, if you take vitamins, you're
(05:48):
going to want to make sure thatyou bring month supply, six
weeks supply, whatever yourestimated time is that you're
going to be out on the road, you're going to want to make
sure you have those, especiallymeds If you're not able to get
in.
And um, curling wand, whateveryou use, works great here.
(06:14):
That's the best part abouthaving a backpack because it has
so many different compartmentsthat you can separate everything
and keep it organized, and Iabsolutely love it.
So now that we got all of ourshower essentials out of the way
and I hope I didn't miss any, like really important hygiene
product, I think I, I think Igot most of them.
(06:36):
Um, the next thing let me benddown here is a bag for your
clothes.
Okay, you do not want a hardsuitcase.
They take up too much room, they're too hard.
You want something soft.
It'll break down.
Um, so a clothing bag you wantand you want to make sure that
(06:57):
you have a lot of people say aweek's worth.
I suggest a little bit morethan that, because you don't
know if you're going to get backto a laundry facility in a week
.
So you're going to want all yourundergarments, extra socks,
right, because we don't wantstinky sock feet shirts, pants
and you want to plan fordifferent climates.
(07:20):
So you want some short sleevestuff.
You want some long sleeve stuff.
You want to make sure, if it'sstill that time of the year like
now where we're getting extremeweather, that you have a coat.
You're going to want two pairsof shoes.
You're going to want your workshoes, which most people are
(07:42):
work boots, you know.
And then you're going to want acasual pair of shoes, still
closed toe, right, because weare at work.
And, like I said, a coat.
If it's in the winter, if westill have winter, you're going
to want to throw a beanie inthere, maybe a scarf If you're
going to be in some prettyfrigid temps.
Uh, some people say throw someclothes hangers in there.
(08:05):
I don't know how much hangingup of clothes you're going to be
doing in your trainer's truck,so I don't put that on my list,
but I do recommend throwing arain poncho in there and they
come in these sealed littlebaggies at Walmart and I would
just throw that.
I've never in my career usedone.
(08:26):
I've always gone out in therain without one as long as I
had a hat or a hood, but you maybe somebody that prefers to
have a rain poncho, so Irecommend that you will also
want to make sure that you packa high-vis vest.
This is something that you'regoing to have to use at a lot of
(08:47):
shippers and vendors.
Most trucking company terminalsrequire that you wear yours when
you're out on the lot.
Some of them provide them.
I don't generally go for that.
I have a pink one that I pickedup from the I-80 truck stop up
in Iowa that I absolutely love.
It zips, got pockets foreverything that I need.
(09:10):
If you don't have one, you canlook, I think, amazon, even
Walmart you can look online.
They're pretty inexpensive.
You're also going to want workgloves.
You can grab those aboutanywhere.
We're going to be getting dirtya lot.
(09:30):
Sometimes companies provide newdrivers with a couple of these
items.
If they do, that is great toget you started.
You can always change up andget something that you like
better later on.
You might want to ask, becausethis does happen, depending on
who you work for.
There are situations where theshippers and receivers that you
(09:54):
go to will require a hard hat orsafety glasses.
Most companies provide safetyglasses, but you will want to
know if that is something youare going to need as well.
Okay, in the day of 2025, we allknow we are all about our
electronics.
(10:14):
I have a phone, I have a tabletthat I bring with me.
If you are going to bring thoseitems, make sure that you have
chargers.
You'll want chargers for boththe port in the truck and USB
chargers and your wall charger.
So you'll want different, because different trucks have.
(10:37):
Not all trucks have USB.
Some of them still have the oldcigarette lighter type ports
and then in that case, you'llhave to buy one of those
chargers.
You'll want a noise cancelingheadset.
Nobody wants to hear what yougot going on when you're
watching YouTube or TikTok oryou're watching trucking with
Tammy.
Nobody else wants to hear thatyou got going on when you're
watching YouTube or TikTok oryou're watching trucking with
(10:58):
Tammy.
Nobody else wants to hear that, right, so make sure you have
that.
I wouldn't suggest bringing alaptop, gaming or anything large
and bulky while you're on thetrainer's truck.
Save that for when you are inyour own.
Okay, um, food this is a weirdone because there's so many
(11:24):
factors, um, that go into this.
It is so expensive to eat outon the road and there's a lot of
junk and me, I get fat, youknow, when I eat out on the road
.
So, um, this is going to dependon the company you're working
for.
Do the trucks have arefrigerator in them?
Do you have to have a separatecooler?
(11:45):
Is there room for two?
Is your trainer going to sharespace?
When I was a trainer, I alwaysshared space.
Okay, um, and if there was anyspecial dietary needs, I
discussed that with my studentdriver from day one.
You do have the ability to stopat Walmart or other places out
(12:07):
on the road to acquire supplieswhen you need them, but this is
a discussion you need to have upfront as far as space is
concerned, because it will varyin each situation.
Outside of that, you also needto make sure that you have a few
supplies as far as doing youractual job on the truck.
(12:30):
The gloves that we mentionedearlier, or that I mentioned
earlier, is very important.
You'll also want to have aflashlight, um, some people
prefer the small LED flashlights.
Some people prefer the largermag lights, and then they also
use that for safety as well.
(12:50):
Um, at this time, you mightwant to start acquiring the
tools that you'll need for yourown truck, or your company may
be providing you a tool bag.
Uh, if they provide you a toolbag, that is great.
It will provide you with theneedle nose pliers, light bulbs,
things like that, that you need.
Um, you also want to keep anotebook.
(13:13):
Uh, always keep track of yourmiles, Always keep track of your
deliveries.
This is something that you willdo every day of your working
life, forever, so that you canconfirm on your paychecks that
the information is accurate.
You'll want to carry a pen.
You will be needing to writedown information for loads and
(13:35):
stuff as you go in and out ofshippers and receivers.
You'll want to make sure youcarry your debit card and make
sure you have emergency cash incase of anything happens.
If you need to get off thetruck, if you quit, if you get
fired, you may get stranded.
You never know.
You may be in a horriblesituation and need to to get out
(13:59):
of it.
Um, there are so many scenariosthat happen out on the road and
you always want to make surethat, if something happens, that
you can take care of yourself, that you can get a rental car,
um, that you can get a hotel, that you cover your rear end and
you take care of you.
Okay, um, having said that, that's a lot.
(14:22):
Now, the one thing I didn'tmention yet, because I was
saving it for last, is ourbedding.
Now, I don't know about you,but I'm pretty picky about my
bedding and I like my sheets, Ilike my comforter, I like my
snuggle blanket and I take twopillows.
Okay, I have always since Istarted in trucking back in 2018
(14:46):
, taken a larger sheet than thebed.
Most of the beds are like atwin, a little bit bigger than a
twin, and I take a queenmattress or a sheet with me
fitted sheet, because it'seasier to wrestle them.
On Some trucks like theinternational, it is a pain to
put a sheet on all the time, soI like it to be a little bit
(15:07):
bigger, bigger so it's easier tomanage.
So, again, I take fitted sheet, top sheet, comforter.
I take fitted sheet, top sheet, comforter, snuggle blanket, two
pillows, and all of that I getrolled up into this laundry bag
that I got at Walmart.
(15:28):
I believe it's a Pioneer Woman,I don't care, I've had it for a
few years now.
So what I do and I'm going tomake a separate video of this,
uh, to put on TikTok.
But I put my sheet out on thefloor, I put my comforter out,
my blanket out and I roll itinto force, put the pillows on
(15:50):
top and then I tight roll itjust like a sleeping bag you
would, and then I put it in thebag.
It makes it so easy totransport all of that stuff,
because normally you know what Isee.
I see students coming up with apillow in each arm.
They got one of those plasticbags from Walmart that has the
(16:10):
bedding set in it and it's all.
It's a whole bunch of stuff,right?
No, no, keep it simple, keep ittight.
Make it easy on you, becausenobody wants to move that much
stuff in and out of a trainer'struck, right?
So that's it.
That's how I do it, that's howI recommend it.
I'm not perfect.
(16:32):
I'm pretty sure I probablyforgot one or 10 things in this
video, but that gives you themajority of it.
For a list, there are resourcesall over the internet that can
list things that you need as theboard member of Real Women in
Trucking, you can head on overto realwomenintruckingorg.
(16:52):
We have a list as well ofeverything that you need on the
truck, your employer, yourtrucking company.
They should have provided you alist as well.
If you have any other questions, shoot me a message.
I would be more than happy toanswer any questions Other than
(17:14):
