Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's time for weekly dispatch, Jules and Jen do you
copy over?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Well, Hey, everybody, I'm so glad you're back. It's Jules. Hey,
I'm bringing you this week's weekly dispatch. Don't forget if
you'd be so kind to head over wherever you're listening
to this podcast, and if you could give us a
five star review or rating. That keeps us growing, that
keeps pushing us in the sea of podcast algorithms out there,
because we know there are a million, and we're so

(00:31):
thankful that you keep coming back to our little corner
of podcast land. So without further ado, let's go. In

(00:51):
March eighteenth, twenty twenty five, ABC News headline by journalist
Emily Shapiro states, quote women's nineteen seventy nine cold case
rate murder solved with genetic genealogy. Eighty two year old
suspect arrested. End quote. Catherine Donahue was just thirty one
years old when on March third, nineteen seventy nine, her

(01:12):
body was dumped in a parking lot in Glenarden, Maryland.
The Prince George's County Police Department would later release that
Catherine Donahue was also beaten and raged before she was
ultimately murdered. According to the Donahue family, no suspect was
named in Catherine's case for decades, despite DNA evidence being
found at the scene. However, recently, in twenty twenty four,

(01:35):
an arrest was made per the article quote. In twenty
twenty four, police said they identified a relative of the
suspect through genetic genealogy, an investigative tool in which the
unknown DNA from the crime scene is identified by comparing
it to family members who voluntarily submit DNA samples to

(01:55):
a database. End quote. So you guys, if you're not
familiar with the recent developed of genetic forensics, then let
me catch you up to date quickly with a well
known case, the Golden State Killer. Have you heard of it?
The Golden State Killer, real name Joseph DiAngelo, was located
and arrested in twenty eighteen. Pertin ABC News article quote,

(02:18):
DiAngelo became the first public arrest obtained through genetic genealogy,
a new technique that takes the DNA of an unknown
suspect left behind at a crime scene and identifies him or
her by tracing a family tree through his or her
family members who voluntarily submit their DNA to a public
genealogy database to identify DiAngelo, Investigators narrowed the family tree

(02:42):
search based on age, location, and other characteristics. Once authorities
zeroed in on DiAngelo, they surveyed him and collected his
DNA from a tissue left in a trash can. Investigators
plugged his discarded DNA back into the genealogy database and
found a match linking DeAngelo's DNA two DNA found at

(03:04):
crime scenes. Prosecutors said end quote those databases, you guys,
they may be the ones that you utilize twenty three
and meters Sound familiar. Ancestry dot Com sound familiar? Yep,
those are the ones. So who was responsible for the
murder of Catherine? Where did the genetic forensic lead the team?

(03:25):
The article explains how additional information was used to lead
to an arrest a man named Roger Zotis Brown, a
d two who at the time lived in the same
town where Catherine was killed. For years and even to
this day, however, there's no publicly known connection between the
alleged murderer and the victim, Katherine Donahue. This is an

(03:48):
ongoing case, so if you have any information, please call
the police department at three zero, one, five, one six
two five one two. Are you familiar with the minute
brother's case With the highly successful Netflix limited series which
you may have seen by now titled Monsters The Lyle
and Eric Menendez Story, This case has seen an insurgence

(04:11):
of interest and intrigue as currently the brothers are seeking
a new trial. Eric Menendez and Lyle Menendez, we're charged
and convicted with the nineteen eighty nine murder of their
parents at their Beverly Hills home. The victims' names were
jose and Mary Louise Kitty Menendez. Now, let's get you
a little up to day with what's been going on

(04:32):
with this case with this news.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Clip following breaking news now out of Los Angeles, where
the district attorney says he will proceed with a court
initiated resentencing hearing for the Menendez brothers. That's schedule to
happen March twentieth and twenty.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
First, Lyle and Eric Menendez are serving life in prison
without parole for killing their parents. They say it was
in self defense for enduring years of sexual abuse from
their father. NBC News correspondent Camilla Burnell joins US Now
from Los Angeles. Camila this was one of the last
routes essentially for the brothers to get out of prison.
I mean, tell us now about the DA's decision.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Yeah, So, look, it's still unclear exactly what is going
to happen with the resentencing.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
And here's why.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
The district Attorney says, yes, it can go forward if
the judge decides to go forward with this resentencing. So
resentencing is sort of a unique law to California. It
can be started either by the courts or by the
district attorney. In this case, what we've come to is
that the previous district attorney had started this motion of
a re sentencing. The DA today saying he is actually

(05:38):
withdrawing that motion that the previous DA put in place
for this resentencing. So what happens is it then falls
at the hands of the judge. The question here will
be will the judge move forward with that resentencing knowing
that the DA.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Withdrew that motion.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
So again it falls in the hands of the judge.
But we still have to wait and see what that
judge sides. The hearing for resentencing is scheduled for March
twenty and twenty. First, as far as we know, as
far as today. Yes, that hearing will continue, but the
question will be will the judge move forward even though
the DA is pulling back that motion and why is

(06:16):
he pulling it back. What he's saying is that the
brothers have not fully admitted to their crimes. What he's
saying is that they fall short when it comes to
accepting responsibility of their crime. Because what he says is
that these two brothers, their self defense argument does not
include sexual abuse. That their defense has always been that
it was in self defense, that that is why they

(06:37):
had killed their parents, nothing to do with the sexual abuse.
And that is why Nathan Hoffman says he will withdraw
that motion for resentencing, leaving it at the hands of
the judge.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Guys, all right, Camila live in Los Angeles watching the
Menendez brother's case for us.

Speaker 5 (06:51):
Camila, thank you.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
And that brings us to this week's headline from journalist
Chelsea Hilton with CBS News quote, Mendendez brother's family hold
rally outside of La County DA's office advocating for their
release end quote. The article then writes, quote, although Eric
and Lyle have admitted to shooting their parents to death

(07:13):
in their Beverly Hills home, in nineteen eighty nine. They
have maintained that they did so in self defense. The
brothers have said they feared for their lives after suffering
years and years of sexual and physical abuse end quote.
The Eric and Lyle Menendez Coalation is comprised of the
Menendaz brothers' family and supporters as they eagerly advocate for

(07:35):
the release and reevaluation of this case. The following news
clip takes us through the most recent update about this case.
Take a listen with me.

Speaker 5 (07:46):
Anew This morning, family members and supporters of the Menendaz
brothers just held a news conference outside District Attorney Nathan
Hakman's office. It's the first time that they're rallying since
Hawkman announced he doesn't support Eric and Lyle's resentencing petition.
NBC fors Karma. Dickerson joins his life from downtown La Karma.

Speaker 6 (08:06):
Well, Annabel. Things have calmed down considerably since about an
hour ago, where dozens of people filled this plaza rallying
in support of Eric and lawman Indez. Take a look.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
The silence and victim is not what God.

Speaker 7 (08:19):
Silence and victims is not what.

Speaker 6 (08:21):
Just good Supporters of Eric and Laumanindez walk down downtown
streets headed for DA and Ethan Hawkman's office. This is
a group that is calling for the resentencing and or
release of the brothers. Today's rally is the first major
public demonstration on behalf of the two since the district
attorney announced last week he does not support resentencing them,
essentially saying they have told many lies, they haven't apologized for.

(08:43):
The Menindez brothers are currently serving life in prison without
the possibility of parole, for the nineteen eighty nine murders
of their parents, Jose and Kitty, and with the death
of an uncle recently who opposed their release. All living
members of the boys' family who have spoken publicly on
the matter support their release from prison. They point to
severe abuses they say the boys suffered at the hands
of their parents, as well as their rehabilitation and reform

(09:05):
work done in prison as reasons their case should be
reassessed now. At a press conference today, criminal justice reform
advocates and members of the Menindez family attacked us for
Attorney Nathan Hoffman's opposition to their resentencing.

Speaker 7 (09:18):
They have apologized multiple times to all of us standing here.
They have owned and accepted every ounce of their actions.
We have had elderly family members who have desperately wanted
to reunite with them before the chance is too late,
not just because they love them, but because they also

(09:39):
carry the weight of regret for not speaking up when
they had the chance.

Speaker 6 (09:44):
They and the DA has essentially said he believes that
the boys have or excuse me, the Menindez brothers have
told several lives that they have not taken responsibility for
and has indicated that he might be open to changing
his position should they take accountability in his eyes. Ultimately,
what happens next with this case, though, is up to

(10:05):
a judge. That next court date is set for mid April,
and keep in mind the recensetting is just resentencing is
just one avenue the Menindez brothers are pursuing. They're also
looking at the possibility of a new trial and have
asked the governor for clemency. Reporting live from downtown on
Karma Dickerson, NBC four nance.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
An article from Fox News by journalist Alexandra Coach states, quote,
active duty US airman charged in killing a missing woman
on military base, Quinarius Chappelle, twenty four, has been arrested
in charge with second degree murder of twenty one year
old Sahila Toka Winsedgrad, a native member of the Cheyenne
River Sioux Tribe. Her family reported her missing on August

(10:46):
tenth of twenty twenty four. However, it wasn't until recently
early March of twenty twenty five, just a few weeks ago,
that her remains would be located by a hiker near
the Pennington Custer Line. The article also states that the
discovery was quote a badly decomposed body which was later
learned to be the Box elder Woman end quote. Now

(11:08):
they didn't know who this woman was, as the body
was so decomposed that there was no visual identifying markers,
so the moniker Box Elder Woman was given to her.
According to the article, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Missing
and Murdered Unit MMU has a victim service program and
is assisting the family as the investigation continues. It should

(11:29):
be noted that the suspect has pled not guilty. Now,
this next story is not one from a recent headline.
In fact, it's from twenty twenty three. However, I wanted
to share it because it's a story of resilience and bravery.
The article from a CBS News journalist named Robin Raven

(11:49):
says this quote, kidnapping victim helps orchestrate her own rescue
by holding up signs seeing help me. A thirteen year
old girl was rescued after holding up a sign from
the window of Steve in Robert Sablin's car in a
Long Beach, California parking lot. The article says, quote Officers
in Long Beach responded to a nine when One call
where they found the team visibly emotionally distressed. Investigating officers

(12:14):
found that Good Samaritans were in the parking lot when
they saw the victim in a parked vehicle holding a
sheet of paper with help me written on it. They
immediately called nine to one one, police said end quote.
The girl was reported as a runaway and was taken
into custody and was kept safe and tragically, she was
held captive for three full days and was subjected to

(12:36):
tragic and traumatic sexual assault during that time from the
hands of the suspect. When the suspect did go into
the laundromat and separate himself from the victim and the
car is when the victim saw a moment of opportunity
to create a sign and hold it up in the
window and hope somebody would see it and do something.

(12:58):
And they did quick and brave thinking on behalf of
this child and the good Smaritan victims from the parking
lot and also law enforcement. This concludes this week's episode
