gmail to at your websitecom foryour emails.

(00:20):

their website?
Or I don't have a website.
How could I possibly do this?
What are even the steps to getstarted with this?
Stay tuned, I'm going to coverall of this in today's episode.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Let's start off with the problem with sending emails
from at gmailcom or at yahoocom.
These generic email addressesmay not be the best choice for
your professional business.
Now don't get me wrong.
We are all side hustlers here.
We all are self-taught.
We started somewhere.
All of us have started off withan at gmail, at yahoocom.
But if I could tell myselfsomething back then, knowing

(01:30):
what I know now, I wish I wouldhave started sooner with a
branded domain email address, which we'll talk about later on
in this episode.
But I wish I would have ditchedthe at gmail, at yahoocom
earlier, sending emails from atgmailcom or at yahoocom.
It lacks a level ofprofessionalism and misses out

(01:54):
on opportunities to gain yoursubscribers trust, like what a
branded custom domain emailaddress can do for you.
Also, it's hard to recognizeyour brand.
Whenever you're sendingsomething with the Google logo,
the Yahoo logo, the purple Yahoo.
It's hard to recognize who isthis actually coming from if
you're not clear on the firsthalf of your email address.

(02:16):
Also, there's a higher chancethat your emails will be marked
as spam sending from one ofthese domains.
What is an example of a brandedemail address?
It would be something like amyat sunkissvacom.
So my email address is mydomain on that second half,

(02:38):
after the at that's what we'retrying to change.
So right now yours might beyour business at gmailcom, at
yahoocom.
So this episode, I'm walkingyou through how to get your
website at that second half nomore Gmail or Yahoo.
Let's move into some of thebenefits of having a custom
domain email address.

(02:59):
The first thing it does for youis it builds that
professionalism and enhancestheir trust.
Why People do business withbusiness.
This is why I am a big advocatefor changing your social media
profile picture to a picture ofyour face.
Why?
Because they're not doingbusiness with a picture of a

(03:21):
t-shirt or a logo.
They want to see who they'redoing business with.
By having a custom domain emailaddress, you're starting to
enhance this by showing them whothey are doing business with.
Also, your custom domain emailaddress enhances your ability to
keep your brand consistent.
So we like to keep all of ourfonts generally the same our

(03:45):
colors, our tone.
We want it to be recognizable.
Think about the last time youwere in the car starving.
Or maybe someone in your carwas starving and you are just
looking for something to eat.
What do you do?
You start looking down the roadahead trying to recognize the

(04:05):
signs up ahead.
You're looking for a certaincolor, a certain logo or a
certain font, certain words thatwill give you the indication
that the restaurant or the fastfood joint that you're
interested in is up ahead.
That's what's helping you makea decision.
Also, think about a road linedwith fast food signs, and
there's a lot of options to pickfrom.

(04:27):
What are you doing?
You're scanning and skimmingthese signs for something that's
recognizable or familiar thatyou want to pick from.
Only one restaurant's going tojump out at you and ultimately
that's the restaurant you'regoing to go with.
So let's start doing the samething with our emails.
By having that custom domain,we're starting to create that

(04:50):
familiarity.
Our customers are going tostart looking for it in their
inbox Whenever we reach out tothem.
We're going to start gainingthat trust with our consistency
and our branded emails.
So that's a benefit of how itwould help your brand and some
recognition.
But what about the control yourcustom email gives you?

(05:12):
You may not be to a point rightnow where you're hiring on help
, whether it's independentcontractors or employees, or
maybe even just asking a familymember to help out.
What you can do today isprepare your business to scale,
how you can start to createdifferent email addresses for

(05:33):
different segments of yourbusiness.
Now, don't get crazy with it,but think about things like if
someone needs help with theirorder, is there a certain inbox
you would like that to go to,like info at your websitecom.
Or if you are big in collabs oraffiliate marketing, could you

(05:54):
have people send inquiries tocollab at customemailcom, right?
And then also, what you can dois, whenever you do get
employees, you can set them upwith their own branded email,
such as employee name, at yourwebsitecom, and then, if they
ever go to leave or maybe youjust have a generic VA one then

(06:16):
you can easily keep all of therecords that doesn't go with
them, and then you can putsomebody else in the seat.
The last thing you want istrying to communicate with your
customers, to stop emailing acertain email and the next thing
you know, the person who is nolonger with your business is now
getting all of your business, because that's who your
customers are reaching out to.
We don't want that, so keep itall in-house.

(06:39):
How do you get started?
Let's move into how to set upyour custom domain.
First things first, youactually need to own a domain,
which technically is not correctterminology, because you're
technically renting your domain.
If you don't renew it, it's nolonger yours.
So you're not technicallybuying a domain, but you do need

(07:01):
to secure one to start.
Some examples of domainproviders are Bluehost, godaddy,
Squarespace, hostgator.
A few of my domains were underGoogle domains, which
Squarespace recently acquired,so you can also check out
Squarespace as well.
Now, before you pause thisepisode and go skip to another

(07:23):
one, because you're thinking Idon't have a website, I am not
going to go secure a domain.
I don't even have a websiteright now.
I'm still selling on Facebook.
People message me their ordersor they just send me money via
Venmo with their order in thecomments Like I just I don't
need a website right now or I'moverwhelmed, I don't know where

(07:44):
to start.
There's no point in me doingthis.
I highly encourage you to goahead and secure your domain
today.
Why, if you don't, there's agood chance the name that you
want, that you're currentlyworking so hard to build your
brand around right now, could betaken, and then you're going to
have to pivot and yourwebsite's not going to match

(08:05):
your Facebook, it's not going tomatch your Instagram and you're
just going to have alldifferent variations of the name
, some dashes, some money signs.
You want to go ahead today, start from the ground and build
up and ensure that you have allof the names that you're going
to want to build.
I promise you, if you stay inbusiness, you're not far off

(08:26):
from a website.
It's actually easier than youthink to build.
But the first step is to secureyour brand domain.
So go ahead, check that out andmake sure you go ahead and grab
one today.
Keep in mind that if yours isalready taken, can you use like
a dash, or can you add the wordthe something very simple, that

(08:51):
it doesn't really change yourbusiness name and it's easy for
your followers, subscribers,customers to remember.
I do recommend trying to keepthe com to the best of your
ability versus going off to anetshop.
Com is the most recognizabledomain, so if you can keep it

(09:14):
there, it's going to ensure thatyou're customers can remember
that.
But if you can't, for whateverreason, and you are going to go
with a shopnet, go ahead andtype in your domain with the com
.
See what website is going to beyour sister domain, meaning if
they were to visit this website, ensure that it has appropriate

(09:36):
content.
Also, is this website that theycould mistakenly type in,
thinking it's yours?
Do they sell something similarto you?
The last thing you want to haveis your website be I don't know
the t-shirt makernet, andbecause com is already taken.
But if they type in t-shirtmakercom and they go to that

(09:59):
website and it could be mistakenfor your business, now you just
sent people to somebody else,so just keep that in mind.
Again, I highly recommend yousecure thecom over thenet, et
cetera, even if you have to adda dash or a the.
Now, how much does this cost?
Majority of your domains can besecured for roughly $20 for the

(10:22):
first two years and then itcould be $20 each year going
forward, which, if you dividethat out per month, it's
actually really not bad at all.
Now, depending on how popularyour domain may be, that's where
it could get more expensive ifit's expected that it could gain
traction or they assess that itcould be highly visible.

(10:43):
Also, you may notice that maybea domain was not available
before, but maybe somebodydidn't renew it or they canceled
their domain purchase orrenting it and now it is
available, you may see thathappen quite a bit, but either
way, I would not plan onchanging it.
I would buy the domain today orrent it the one that you plan

(11:07):
on using for years to come aboutand you can go ahead and start
sending emails from this customdomain email address, starting
to gain awareness, starting outyour email marketing even ahead

(11:27):
of this website.
So you're already starting tobuild that brand consistency.
It's time to move into settingup your custom email address now
.
So you're sending emails fromyour website at gmailcom.
It's now time to transition.
So there are a few providersthat can do this service for you
.
I prefer Google Workspace itwas formerly known as G Suite if

(11:52):
you are an OG user.
But the reason why I reallylike Google Workspace is that I
can still use like the Googleinterface, especially if you
were using Gmail before.
However, now you can justtransition it into a custom
website domain provider for you.
Now I'm going to link in theshow notes.
If you go to sunkissvacomforward, slash 28, I'll have all

(12:15):
of the how to links secure foryou, along with how to purchase
your domain, different options.
That way, you'll have all ofthe steps in one place that you
can click through, work throughand follow those how-to steps
and once you get this set up,this is where you're going to
start to create those branchedoff subdivisions of your
business.
Now, if it's still just, youdon't get crazy with it.

(12:38):
I'd recommend two, maybe threemax different inboxes and at any
time if you decide to changethese up, you can always forward
those inboxes to each other.
So if you start out with ainbox that is like info at your
websitecom and you're like I nolonger want to do that.

(12:58):
I want to just streamline thatto support at my website, all
you have to do is just forwardinfo at into that new email
address.
So think about the differentfunctions of your business.
Look at your current inboxright now.
What are the majority of theemails that you're getting?
Can you start to categorizethem to where it would make more
sense for them to emaildifferent departments of your

(13:21):
business?
Also, not to mention, some ofyour customers may not know that
you are a one-man show and sowhen they're starting to email
these different departmentsreference my air quotes it also
starts to give this strongerappearance level of
professionalism of yourdifferent departments working.
Little do they know that you'reworking in all of the

(13:43):
departments Life of a smallbusiness owner and the last step
is now connecting your customemail to your email marketing
provider.
Having a custom domain emailaddress is crucial if you want
to start to work on building aneffective email marketing
strategy.

(14:03):
Many of our email serviceproviders, also known as ESPs,
actually require a domain emailaddress to send these marketing
emails.
Why?
Because if you're sendingemails from Gmail or at Yahoo,
anyone can build one of those.
Any spammer can just decide oh,today I'm going to create a
Gmail address and I'm just goingto blast emails to all of these

(14:26):
people.
The end user inboxes recognizethat and there's a higher
likelihood that they're going tothrow those emails into spam,
whereas you're a small businessowner, you're like no, I've been
using this Gmail address foryears.
Trust me, they're like nah, fam, you're going to spam.
So if you take the time tobuild out a domain custom email

(14:48):
address, you are increasing yourchances of landing in that main
email inbox.
My ESP of choice is Flowdesk.
I've been using them for justshy of three years now, and the
reason why I really highlyimplore you to sign up with an
ESP, even if it's not Flowdesk,is because they're going to

(15:09):
ensure that your emails arefollowing compliance and the
legal guidelines as prescribedfor the CAN Spam Act.
If you have not read that, Ihighly recommend you go.
Take a look at that before youstart sending email marketing
emails out, because you do notwant to get hit with a violation
for the canned spam act.
The fines are hefty.

(15:31):
What's really cool aboutsending emails from your custom
email address as well is everytime it hits their inbox, they
are reminded of your website togo shop.
So, even if they're sending ina question or an inquiry or
asking questions about theirorder, whenever they type out
your email address, they arebeing reminded of where they can

(15:51):
go shop, whereas for Gmail orYahoo not necessarily doing it
for them.
So you're inevitably increasingyour SEO by having this custom
email address.
It's time to recap this episode.
It's short and sweet because Iwant you to get into action.
So we discussed the issues withjust having a generic email
with Gmail or Yahoo.

(16:13):
We talked about the benefitsthat you could have by setting
up and securing a custom domainemail address.
We went through the differentplaces that you can go secure
and rent a custom domain emailaddress.
We went through the differentplaces that you can go, secure
and rent a custom URL whicheventually you can turn into
sending emails from and thenbringing it all back full circle
to connecting it to your emailmarketing.

(16:34):
Starting with a Gmail or Yahooemail address is fine If that's
where you're at we've all beenthere but I'm encouraging you to
move in to your next step todayby securing that domain and
then moving all of your emailsover to a custom email address,

(16:57):
preparing you for businessgrowth.
Start building your email list.
If you had only time to buildout your email list or build a
website, I'm going to tell youto start growing your email list
first, because then you'll havean audience to email and share
the good news when you have thatwebsite ready to launch.

(17:18):
