This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we focus on films telling stories from a Black perspective with predominantly Black casts. This is another theme that we plan on revisiting in a later episode in the hopes some others come available on our streaming services! In watching these films, we were also struck by how important and impactful representation in the industry is, and feel even more excited for the work that Ryan Coogler is doing on the heels of Sinners. Unfortunately, some of these movies didn’t fully land for us even though the concept was there. The Deliverance went viral on TikTok for Glenn Close’s role in the movie, but that wasn’t necessarily positive press for this Netflix production. Staying with the horror genre, we also watched Us. Hannah had seen this many times, but it was the first time Ailish had watched. This concept gives you a lot to think about, and we both think this is a win for Jordan Peele. Beasts of the Southern Wild left us a bit divided. While we both thought Quvenzhané Wallis was unbelievable and the visuals were striking, we wondered what the reception of this movie would be today. Lastly, we watched Sam Levinson’s, Malcom & Marie. Overall, this one felt like the same scene over and over, even though the acting and composition of the filming was visually appealing.
Since Ailish was on vacation last week, she didn’t get to watch other movies, but luckily, Hannah did! She went to see Together and it wasn’t exactly what she expected based on previews. Ailish hopes to see this as well, so we’ll talk more about this on a future episode. She also watched Terrifier 2 and talked about some previews she saw when seeing Together.
