This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we focus on all things Leo. Before we dove into the films, we discussed the Netflix documentary that everyone has been talking about: Unknown Number: A High School Catfish. Even though the “reveal” was spoiled for us since we watched it a little later than most, it was still shocking when you see the texts right in front of you. We heard about the article that started it all from The Cut, and we plan on reading that to dig a little deeper since there were some things left out of the doc.

The Man with the Iron Mask started our dive into Leonardo DiCaprio films. This was one we hadn’t heard of, but after watching a little bit, we both felt like we might have seen bits of it before. It feels like a period piece like this is a right of passage for young actors who want to show they’re serious about their work, and while this movie had some great actors working alongside Leo, the overall execution fell a little flat. It was still entertaining and we felt Leo gave a pretty good performance, especially since (spoiler alert) he was playing two people. The Beach was another story. This is another early Leo work and we did feel like his acting skills really were apparent here. The rest of the movie however, felt like a bit of a mess and it was even difficult to follow at times. Going in chronological order, The Departed comes next. What is there to say about this movie? It’s one of Ailish’s favorite movies of all time (in her Letterboxd top four) and it’s a film both of us have seen numerous times over. The cast fires on all cylinders and Leo, again, gives a standout performance. Lastly, we have Don’t Look Up. Neither of us had seen this one since it was released during Covid, and we have to say that the timing of the release definitely negatively impacted its reception. After watching it a second time, we found it to be really funny and we loved the cast chemistry between Leo and Jennifer Lawrence.
