This week, Two Girl Cinema Club focuses on animated films, but before we dig into that, we talk about a variety of other movies we caught up with. Ailish was finally able to watch the Black Phone ahead of the sequel coming this fall, and The Woman in the Yard which didn’t land for Blum House. Hannah watched The Shark Whisperer and Flow, and listened to The Dirt after we watched the movie a few weeks ago. Speaking of Pam Anderson, we also discussed The Last Showgirl and what Oscar nominations mean, and the upcoming epic, The Odyssey.
Our theme this week was Oscar-Nominated Animated Films and we started with The Wild Robot. Since Hannah watched Flow, it was interesting to compare the movie that won the Oscar vs this one. Out of all the movies this week, we didn’t gel with The Mitchell’s vs The Machines. There were definitely some funny moments, but overall, we felt this one didn’t give kids enough credit, especially when you compare it to the other nominated films. Pinocchio surprised us the most. This was another unbelievable stop-motion film and we were completely in awe of how it was executed. Last on the list was I Lost My Body. While this one was animated, it wasn’t geared toward children, and it explored some heavy themes.
