Season of the Witches (Practical Magic, The Love Witch, Hocus Pocus, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark)

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we start our Spooky Season themes! We have five weeks in October and we’re filling every week with Halloween-themed films. Before we start discussing the films of the week, Hannah introduces something new that we’ll be introducing to the podcast in a month or so. Trailer Tuesdays will be coming soon and we preview it here! Let us know what you think about this being an addition to our weekly episode. A couple episodes ago, we talked about how we would love to see Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in another film together and our wish has been granted. Multiple sources have reported that Leo and JLaw will be in a new Martin Scorsese for Apple called What Happens at Night. This sounds like it’s going to be a drama/thriller and we’re excited to hear more! Hannah was also able to watch Bride of Frankenstein which is fitting for the season.

To start October, we decided to channel our inner witches and watched some really fun films. Surprisingly, neither of us had seen Practical Magic even though it’s a cult classic at this point. Yes, this movie has some plot holes, but everyone looks so great and the witch vibes are strong which makes this one a winner in our eyes. The Love Witch was a Tubi find that really surprised us. We had not idea what to expect with this movie and we agreed that it was a hair too long. Hocus Pocus. What can we even say about this movie that hasn’t already been said? This one will always be a seasonal favorite and this is the first of many times we’ll watch it this fall. To round things out, we watched Elvira: Mistress of the Darkness. Of course we knew who Elvira was, but we’d never really heard of this film before finding it on Tubi. It was cheeky, and we feel like Elvira was one of the women that paved the way for the women of today. She was completely, unapologetically herself!
