Emotional recovery is the process we go through when we’re triggered. It involves noticing the emotion, feeling it, and then coming back to a state of balance. In this episode, I wanted to draw a comparison between emotional recovery and physical exercise.
When it comes to physical fitness, we often gauge our condition by how quickly we recover. For example, if you run to the top of a hill, how long does it take for your breath to settle? There’s bound to be some huffing and puffing, but the duration of that recovery tells a story.
The same idea applies to emotional triggers. How long does it take for you to recover from being triggered? Are you still carrying it 48 hours later? Are you giving your partner the silent treatment because your nervous system is stuck in shutdown mode?
So, what emotional “shape” are you in?
