En retsmedicinsk obduktion kan vare fra én time helt op til ti-tolv timer. Varigheden afhænger blandt andet af, hvor mange læsioner den afdøde har. Alle detaljer registreres, og hvert enkelt organ bliver nøje undersøgt af retsmedicinerne for at finde frem til dødsårsagen.
Asser Hedegård Thomsen har været speciallæge i retsmedicin siden 2014 og obduceret cirka 500 afdøde personer. Han viser rundt i dissektionsstuen og fortæller om alle detaljerne i en retsmedicinsk obduktion. En obduktionen kan give værdifuld viden til både politiet og til de pårørende til den afdøde.
