Institut for Retsmedicin er på verdensplan en af de institutioner, der er længst fremme med udvikling af en metode, der kan effektivisere indentifikation af afdøde ved hjælp af 3D-billeder af tandsæt.
Flere og flere unge har sunde tænder uden fyldninger på grund af den forbedrede tandhygiejne. Det har dog den ulempe, at identifikation af unge ofre fra for eksempel en katastrofe bliver vanskelig med den metode, tandlæger (retsodontologer) hidtil har anvendt. Her er det nemlig fyldningerne og andet tandlægearbejde, som retsodontologerne benytter, når de identificere afdøde ud fra ofrenes tandoplysninger.
Til gengæld får flere og flere unge unge udført tandretninger, og meget ofte vil deres tandlæge optage og gemme 3D billeder af tandsættet.
Bioinformatiker og ph.d.-studerende Anika Kofod Kousgaard Petersen har udviklet et analyseredskab, der kan sammenligne 3D-billeder af afdødes tænder med de billeder, som de har fået optaget ved egen tandlæge. Hun har så at sige kortlagt tændernes bakker og dale som de fremstår på 3D-billederne. Når metoden er færdigudviklet, vil retsodontologerne kunne tage bærbart udstyr ud i marken og effektivt benytte den nye metode ved identifikationer.
