In Episode 19 of Unbreakable Spirit, Julie Prashad-Ramirez shares her story of losing her mother to glioblastoma (brain cancer). Her Mom's diagnosis came shortly after the birth of Julie's first daughter. At a time when Julie and her Mom should have been enjoying the new baby, instead, this diagnosis turned their world upside down. Her Mom passed away just a year later. Her Dad was left to raise her 10 year old brother alone. Devastatingly, just a few short years later, her Dad unexpectedly dies from a heart attack. Julie, as the oldest daughter, is left with all the responsibilities.
She steps in to plan the funeral, and manage her Dad's estate and to care for her brother. There was so much to do and she had no clue where to begin. She had to use her own funds to plan the funeral and pay attorneys until the estate could be settled and there were many complicated issues regarding the estate. There was much to do. She and her husband filed for guardianship of her brother.
Now with two little girls and a teenage brother living with her, Julie was overwhelmed and depressed. She was deeply grieving the loss of both parents in such a short time, but there was also an anger and resentment that she was left with this burden of figuring out her Dad's estate and almost losing everything trying to help. It placed a burden on her marriage as well. Bad things weren't supposed to happen to good people.
Julie found her way to healing through medication to help lift her out of the depression and through becoming more spiritually connected through her church. She now dedicates her life to helping others with all aspects of their finances including the importance of life insurance and advises on why estate planning is so important so that no one will have to go through what she had to.
