Join us for another episode of Uncanny Book Club and explore one of the most influential storytelling sagas in comic book history.

In episode 11 we intend to discuss all four issues of the Proteus arc but end up splitting our thoughts into two episodes. But we do see the return of Phoenix, both sides of the X-Men realize the others are alive, and the introduction of Proteus as maybe the X-Men's most deadly foe yet.

Thank you.

SPEAKER_01 (00:07):
Hello and welcome to Uncanny Book Club.
I'm Isaac Baderspiel and joiningme today is my co-host Adam

SPEAKER_00 (00:15):
Ward.
I am uh well firstly helloeveryone and I'm going to just
get right out the gate and saymy review number right off the
top nine out of ten.
This is fantastic.
Probably I think the best fourissue arc period that we've
read.
Maybe even the best arc we'veread.

SPEAKER_01 (00:36):
Yeah I would say it's just the best overall arc
that we've read so far.
There are some that come close, but I think overall this is just
such a well-polished story.
It's

SPEAKER_00 (00:48):
hard to beat it so far.
I really want to give theflowers to Chris, to John,
Terry, and everybody else who'sbeen involved on this creative
team because I nitpick.
As I've come to learn, I canfind the very small things that
I just pull the thread on.
And it was really difficult forme to find things to complain

(01:10):
about in these issues.
Yeah, you have to dig a littlebit.
I'm very, very excited to talkabout it for sure.
So if you want to kick us offhere on our little recap.

SPEAKER_01 (01:21):
In this podcast, we are exploring Chris Claremont's
legendary X-Men run as we readit for the very first time.
We hope you'll join us and readalongside or just stick with us
for the discussion.
In our previous episode, theX-Men settled in with some
downtime after being a from homefor so long, with Wolverine
discovering Mariko was inAmerica, Storm visiting her

(01:44):
briefly childhood home inHarlem, and Scott spending some
more time with Colleen.
Their life can't stay simplethough, and the team was
kidnapped by Arcade, who hadbeen hired by Juggernaut and
Black Tom Cassidy.
The X-Men were successful inescaping Murder World, but had
to save their payback foranother day.
In today's episode, we're goingto pick things up with issues

(02:07):
112 Issue 125 promises thedramatic return of the Phoenix,
and that's exactly how thingskick off.
Moira is running tests toevaluate Jean's capabilities at
Myrrh Island.
Across the pond, the X-Men arerunning their own evaluations,
with the team doing some goodold-fashioned danger room

(02:27):
training.
Scott is disappointed in theirperformance, putting him at odds
with Wolverine once again.
We take a quick detour to checkin on Magneto, who is still
recovering from his last fightwith the X-Men.
He's reviewing memory tapes ofhis past battles while aboard
Asteroid M, but is interruptedby thoughts of his late wife

(02:48):
Magna.
We also spend some time withJason Wingard, and it's revealed
that he's been creepily stalkingJean everywhere she goes,
showing up as different peopledepending on where she is.
His plan is to mold Jean Grey tobe the Black Queen of the
Hellfire Club.
And finally, we take a trip tospace and spend some time with

(03:10):
Xavier.
Lalandra has less time for himthese days as she's busy running
an empire.
He visits a library and beginsto review what occurred when the
X-Men ventured into space tosave Lalandra and stop Dakan.
Xavier realizes that what Jeanaccomplished that day involved
an amount of power outside thatwhich a human could control and

(03:34):
realizes he must return to Earthbefore it's too late.
Moira is walking the halls ofher lab and mulling over her
concerns, which mirror Xavier's,as she steps on a gold tooth and
realizes that Mutant X hasescaped its holding area.
Jean detects something inMoira's thoughts and rushes to

(03:54):
her aid, but is sidetracked by avision of herself as a noble in
the 18th century.
She's shocked to discover thather powers tell her that what
she's seeing and experiencing isreal.
When she comes to, she's againin interrupted by the decayed
husk of old man McWhorterattacking her.
Finally, we return to New Yorkwith Beast breaking into the

(04:15):
mansion and discovering that theX-Men are alive and well, which
means they finally get to learnthat Jean is alive.
Lorna answers Scott's call andsays that they should get there
quick.
Scott hears her scream, and theline goes dead.
That might be one of the longeststory summaries I've had to...

(04:37):
put together you know lastepisode it was like they got to
murder world they you knowplayed his sick games and they
got out there wasn't a whole lotof like you know we need to
cover this plot point we need toget this one this one there's
just I can't believe that theypacked so much stuff into a
standard length issue as I wasreading this I was like surely

(05:01):
this has to like have a fewextra pages or something but I
was a little shocked to see thatWe're working with the standard
length on

SPEAKER_00 (05:10):
this one.
I think it's important context, though, that this is coming
after the uncanny X-Men annualthat would have been kind of
shoehorned in here between thelast main book and this one.
And, you know, we have a bit oflike a recap that's kind of
happening at times, but nothingthat I think takes away from
furthering the story forward.

(05:32):
I said it off the top.
I think these four issues areprobably like peak I don't think
we've read anything quite likethem yet and there's a lot to
unpack definitely where do you

SPEAKER_01 (05:44):
want to start

SPEAKER_00 (05:45):
do we think we get the dramatic return of the
Phoenix I mean the Phoenix wasnever really gone I think that
was a little misleading look

SPEAKER_01 (05:54):
the comic book covers have to sell the inside
parts so the cover says thedramatic return of Phoenix and I
mean you know she is on thefirst page she's doing cool
power stuff it's not necessarilydramatic per se but it is nice

(06:16):
to I guess somewhat see her inaction again

SPEAKER_00 (06:19):
yeah I think it's very interesting seeing Moira
McTaggart in this role she'skind of taking here as this head
scientist because when we'refirst introduced her in this run
she's like a I don't know acaretaker for Charles Xavier who
I I mean is a rightful badassright we see her bust out with a

(06:42):
machine gun at various timesduring confrontations with Eric
the Red and here she's in anentirely different role that for
me I think suits her much bettershe's an intelligent woman she's
providing Jean with insight intoher powers like really trying to

(07:03):
get to the core of you knowwhat's going on with Jean.
Jean could it could have reallybeen the title of this book is
what's going on with Jeanthere's something happening with
her this Phoenix power nobodyunderstands and we're beginning
to pull back the layers todiscover that not everything is

(07:25):
what it seems and I

SPEAKER_01 (07:27):
think what's going on with Jean could probably be
just an ongoing theme likely forthe

SPEAKER_00 (07:32):
next several issues yeah I hope we really don't get
Moyer back in an innkeepercapacity because her role over
these books and these fourissues is i think really really
tremendous this story that chrisis telling has themes of
generational trauma that arebleeding through with mutant x

(07:54):
having a bit of a influence thatreally stems from moira's own
personal trauma so this isreally at its core the story
that we're kind of gonna to betalking about today is really
one that involves Moira and herchild, a mother and her child.
So I really, really liked thatthey kind of weaved in this

(08:18):
familial hook that we haven'treally seen play out quite yet.

SPEAKER_01 (08:23):
I'm glad you bring up the topic of generational
trauma and how that's like acore theme to what we're going
to be reading today.
One thing that, you know, Ireally want to look at is, I
don't know how things were, butlike I'm assuming 50 years ago
the core audience for comicbooks I'm assuming is like kids
younger kids maybe young teensbut like these are very mature

(08:47):
themes and mature stories thatwe're visiting with over these
four issues and I think thatthat's likely one of the things
that when people look back onChris's run with the X-Men is
likely him elevating the storiesa little bit and you know really
hitting on some of those morelike adult

SPEAKER_00 (09:10):
storytelling.
Yeah, and I don't know that Iwould have maybe have
appreciated this the same way Ido now.
I think being, and you'llprobably agree with me on this,
but being a father, a lot ofthings are put into a different
perspective and the influencesthat you have both directly and
indirectly on your child canhappen without you even

(09:30):
realizing it.
That can be the slip of atongue, you know, having your
child kind of repeat somethingthat you say by mistake, you
know, but deeper down, you canhave these influences that bleed
through without you evenrecognizing it.
And when you are feeling pain, you know, whatever form that

(09:51):
might be taking, like thatobviously has a ripple effect
that's going to affect thechild.
And that's really what we seehere, though, you know, we
really don't kind of get thisrevelation for a I guess
although I would hope thatyou're caught up at this point
but it's just a great way ofpersonalizing this story for

(10:15):
Moira and really I think makingher into this crux of a
character that she really didn'tnecessarily need to be and even
you kind of talking about likewhen this would have been
released it definitely the coreaudience would have been young
men right young teenage boysreading comics that's pretty

(10:36):
much what the target audiencewould have been and here you
have very strong femalecharacters who are not damsels
in distress they are leading thecharge you have Moira who's this
incredibly smart individualleading her own research lab
trying to help anotherincredibly strong woman in Jean
try and figure out her powers soI mean I think kudos to the team

(11:00):
for trying to elevate thesecharacters into being more than
just a side character

SPEAKER_01 (11:05):
before we get too far away from where we started
with, you know, discussingPhoenix and whether or not this
is really a dramatic return.
One thing that I reallyappreciated about this issue was
just, I feel like there's a lotof great foreshadowing for, you
know, what's to eventuallyoccur.
If I look at just like thesecond page, they're running the

(11:28):
tests, there's a panel with Jeanjust looking immensely irritated
about having to do these testsand right before that is Moira
just looking extremely concernedabout the data that she's
getting from this and it's justJean saying that you know using
her power makes her feel goodMoira asks good enough to want

(11:52):
to use it again so there youknow they're kind of hinting at
like it's kind of a corruptingforce a corrupting power at this
point

SPEAKER_00 (12:02):
yeah that's a thread we see a lot through these books
right as we get into, many timesit's alluded to that the more
Proteus, as we'll come to knowhim, the more he uses his
powers, the stronger he gets.
And we do see that, right?
Like every time the X-Men kindof have this confrontation with

(12:22):
him, he is stronger and strongerand stronger and stronger.
And here we have Geneexperiencing the same thing, but
without the obvious evilconnotations that are obviously
surrounding Proteus versus Gene.
at least not yet gene refers toit as a quote real drag the

(12:44):
other thing too since we'retalking about foreshadowing we
jump over to the x-men trainingand i made a note here about how
i don't agree with scott's takethat this version of the x-men
would never be as good as theoriginal team and he makes a lot

(13:04):
of claims about how they've beenlucky i how that luck's going to
run out, how they need to bebetter prepared.
I don't feel like that's a veryfair representation of what's
taken place, right?
Like, the X-Men have literallybeen on a nonstop, action-packed
journey for the last severalarcs, dealing with very high,

(13:26):
high-threat enemies, high stakesthat could have resulted in
devastation.
look no further than Banshee whostill is suffering from the
events that took place in Japanand he's like grilling them

(13:47):
about not doing good enough inthe danger room and you can see
the frustration right it'spretty

SPEAKER_01 (13:53):
rough how he addresses them just the pathetic
people really pathetic I can Ican understand why that might
rub Wolverine the wrong way

SPEAKER_00 (14:04):
and like I have to imagine it's not just him.
We see Kurt struggling.
We see Storm struggling.
And it's those instances, likehis phrasing of situations and
the words he uses to, I guess, bestow his wisdom onto the X-Men

(14:24):
at times is just not the way todo it.
But when we think of theforeshadowing element that's
going to happen here, this isgoing to come back into the fold
in a couple of issues and Ithink the way that they did that
was just so good so brilliantand really I think speaks to
Scott's leadership though Idon't think how he goes about

(14:51):
portraying the need to perfectthe skills and you gotta be tip
top which you know I understandthe importance of that it would
be a it would be a workplacehazard if you're not
anticipating every variable thatyou can plan for But...
You know, I always tell my sonthat words matter.
How you talk to people matters.

(15:14):
And that's kind of what we seehere with Scott, who really
doesn't handle the situationvery well.
And then they're training untiltwo in the morning?
What's up with that?
Are they?
Yeah, when, let me find thepage.
I think it's when Beast showsup.
Beast shows up in like themiddle of the night.
Are they still training at thatpoint?
Yeah, they're in the dangerroom.

SPEAKER_01 (15:34):
Instantly inside the danger room.
An ungodly hour for anyone to govisiting.
Yeah, it says around 2

SPEAKER_00 (15:41):
in the morning.
Yeah, you're right.
Around 2 in the morning, yeah.
And there they are.
It's also weird that Kurt waslike waiting above the doorway.

SPEAKER_01 (15:51):
Well, the alarms went off.
Wait, no, no, no.
No, no, no.
He says the alarms have beendisconnected.
Yeah, I have no explanation forthat.

SPEAKER_00 (16:01):
Maybe that's just where he hangs.
Yeah, maybe that's where his bedis.
Although he has a bedroom.
We've seen it.
And he hangs out on the ceiling.
Maybe that's it.
That could be it.
And then he got shit from Moirafor making brimstone smell all
over the place, which would bevery unpleasant, by the way.
But that whole reunion we getwith Beast, oh, man, it was like

(16:23):
so perfect.
Him picking up Scott and givinghim this massive hug.

SPEAKER_01 (16:28):
And it's also kind of like a relief in terms of
like, God, finally this hashappened.
They're reunited.
We're going to get everyonetogether.
Everyone's going to be on thesame page no one is dead we can
we can move past all that

SPEAKER_00 (16:43):
yeah i would still like to know like how they've
gone this long without beingable to put two and two together
because i imagine beast isinvolved with the avengers at
this point still so yep he tookthe quinjet over albeit we did
like a couple issues ago theywere talking about how a lot of
the super teams were mia that

SPEAKER_01 (17:04):
was months ago though i assume the avengers are
back in action like in-universemonths ago.

SPEAKER_00 (17:09):
Yeah, yes, yeah, yeah.
Anyways, I felt like thisembrace with Beast really showed
their brotherhood, and it wasreally wonderful, I think, to
finally see that reunion takeplace on the pages.

SPEAKER_01 (17:21):
Not to dwell too long on it, and I agree with a
lot of what you said about theScott situation.
The only contradiction I guess Iwanted to make is when he says I
don't, you know, I doubt you'llever mesh as well as the
original team and I'm not surethat's the desirable goal

(17:41):
anymore I don't take it as himsaying the original team was
better or like more powerful Ithink it's more like you know
they were all younger grew uptogether and so much more used
to each other that they just hada lot more inherent synergy and
I'm guessing we're probably moreokay with being bossed around

(18:04):
than the current team is withbeing bossed around he mentions
they're all such strong-willedindividuals and I feel like this
is actually something he'sbrought up earlier like at least
one or two other times just howthis group doesn't have the same
synergy but I don't know maybelike a

SPEAKER_00 (18:23):
higher potential I don't know man I feel like at
this point they've pretty muchproved it how many family
moments do you need how manytimes do we need to hear them
say well you're my family likehow much closer can you get I
think Scott is just stuck in thepast well he's clearly he can't
move on he's clearly goingthrough some stuff i don't know
i mean there's no uh colleenwing in this issue but i mean we

(18:48):
know that's still lingering inthe background somewhere
probably one would assume thelast we saw her she gave him the
keys to her house stop byanytime it's done come on move
on in well we see the wholesituation when they eventually
reunite him and gene that uhhe's still seemingly questioned
questioning what's what's whatthe thing didn't feel we'll see

(19:11):
we'll cover it what were yourthoughts on magneto in space

SPEAKER_01 (19:15):
i was really glad that we had like a little
check-in on him you know it'snice to explore him more as a
character outside of just heshows up and he tries to kill
the x-men every so often and ireally enjoy that we're getting
some additional context into ohboy he was very injured because
that fight was several monthsago and he He is still banged up

(19:39):
pretty good.
And, you know, it's nice to getto know him more than just he's
the mutant terrorist.
We get to spend some time withhim reminiscing about his late
wife and that just kind ofpopping up and coming into his
thoughts.
It humanizes him in a way thatprobably hasn't been done much

(20:02):
so far in the series.

SPEAKER_00 (20:04):
Yeah, I agree 100%.
You almost feel bad for him.
You feel this level of sympathythat he's sitting there bandaged
up still as if this battle hadjust recently taken place.
He's watching extremely oldvideos of him having a conflict

(20:25):
with the X-Men.
Both him and Scott are stuck onthe original

SPEAKER_01 (20:29):
team.

SPEAKER_00 (20:31):
Why are you studying a memory tape of your conflict
with the former X-Men team whenit was the most recent
incarnation that whooped yourbutt.
He's just trying to remember thegood old days.
Remember when I could take onthe X-Men and not be up here in
space on this godforsakenasteroid with a king for some

(20:52):
reason, which we've never seenMagneto use before.
Well, he's really hurt.
He just prefers

SPEAKER_01 (20:58):
a time...
Yeah.
He just prefers a time when hewas fighting against somebody
that flew a round with abazooka.
I

SPEAKER_00 (21:11):
don't know that I've ever seen a story with Magneto
even reflecting on his wife, andI don't know much about her or
what happened to her.
He alludes to the fact that sheran away from him, assuming, you
know, she maybe didn't know hewas a mutant, and when he
revealed it, it was too much.

SPEAKER_01 (21:32):
Well,

SPEAKER_00 (21:33):
it says it was long

SPEAKER_01 (21:34):
ago when I still believed I was only human.
So it's hard to tell.
It could be like his powersemerge.
It scares her.
Or is she running away from himfor a much more simple reason?
Yeah, fair.

SPEAKER_00 (21:51):
Nonetheless, I feel sad.
This is like a sad version ofMake Me Know that we're not used
to seeing because he's portrayedwith such strength typically.

SPEAKER_01 (22:04):
It's been retconned so many times that whatever, but
is this Wanda and Pietro's

SPEAKER_00 (22:12):
mother?
I believe it is,

SPEAKER_01 (22:14):
yeah.
I think it is too.

SPEAKER_00 (22:15):
Yeah, the history of those characters is very
complicated.

SPEAKER_01 (22:22):
I'm excited for them to someday change it back to
them being his biologicalchildren.
I think that that's the waythings should be.
That's the way it, whatever, fixit.

SPEAKER_00 (22:32):
I think that was mostly done due to the movies.
What are your thoughts on thislingering Hellfire Club
storyline that we have kind ofplaying out in these books?
So I

SPEAKER_01 (22:48):
really like that we're getting these little
drops.
you know, like little teases asto what's to come in the future.
These four issues are veryfocused on this immediate story
arc and spending a lot of timethere.
But we are still getting like alot of these scenes of like,
here's Jason doing no goodstuff.

(23:09):
Here's how he was messing withJean being just an all around
terrible person.
I think it's just the rightamount of threads that they're
dangling out there.
And it feels a little differentthan you know early on with like
the Eric the Red stuff with hejust pops up for like an issue
and then it's gone for eightissues or something like that it

(23:30):
feels like it's gonna be betterpaced feels like we're actually
gonna be doing things likecontinuing to spend time with
this story and probably like themain story showing up sooner
versus later and I think youknow also Xavier says oh I gotta
I gotta leave I gotta go toearth immediately I feel like

(23:51):
there's a good chance of himshowing up sooner

SPEAKER_00 (23:54):
versus later as well yeah Charles really feels like a
fish out of water he kind of hasthis look of a man who knows he
goofed and we kind of get thishint that Jean really needed
Charles and needed him to stepup and help her kind of deal
with the situation of losing herfriends of dealing with this new

(24:17):
power and you know people dealwith grief in different ways and
Charles dealt with this bystarting a new family and
running away it's essentiallywhat happened and so we're left
with Jean trying to navigatethis complicated situation going
to Moira and to other members ofher ex-family in Havoc and Lorna

(24:40):
to really try to I think kind offill the void that not only her
believed to be dead friends havemade but also the void that Char
has made by just leaving earthand all of his earthly problems
behind him it's nice to see himreconcile with the idea that

(25:02):
he's made a grave error and it'sfun seeing him on this alien
world his new love is tied upbeing a queen and he's left to
be a consort who is Basicallystudying in a library, trying to
figure things out.
Also feels bad.

(25:23):
They have all this massivetechnology that exists.
You can fly through space andhere's Charles still in a
wheelchair.
Feels bad.
Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 (25:32):
At other times, in other media at least, in X-Men
97...
They give him a cool exoskeletonto wear.
He walks around being menacing.

SPEAKER_00 (25:44):
I was reflecting on this while we were talking
earlier.
I don't really miss the Charleselement in all of this.
I actually think the dynamic ofthe X-Men is functioning better
without him.
Yeah.

SPEAKER_01 (25:59):
He was kind of not the best as like a leader.
And for a lot of the issues,it's kind of difficult to see
like, you know, what is hereally Yeah, I feel like this
team has just

SPEAKER_00 (26:39):
just kind of outgrown Charles and maybe
that's because they're not theoriginal team right like maybe
it's because they were recruitedas you said like later in life
they're not young people whoneeded him in the same way that
a bunch of scared teenagerswould have really needed him and
he would have been given thisopportunity to I think train

(27:02):
them up whereas when we'reintroduced to all of the X-Men
in this series they are all aaware of at least you know maybe
not deeply aware but they areaware that they're mutants and
they know that they have powersand generally how to use them
especially when you look atLogan and you look at Storm and

(27:25):
you know Peter can can do hismetal thing so like I think the
dynamic is very different evenlooking at Banshee is another
experienced X-Men right his roleis not what it was once he isn't
the headmaster of a school formutants who really require him
to be this father figure whenyou see Scott butting heads with

(27:48):
members of the X-Men and beinghard on them you can really see
the influence of Charles overhis shoulder speaking through
him and really kind of givingthem a hard time because we know
Charles has given him a hardtime something that we like you
and I have really been criticalof Charles for doing at times
when Scott was mourning the lossof Jean and dealing with this

(28:11):
incredible situation where she'stransformed into the Phoenix
and, you know, he's goingthrough the motions of dealing
with that situation.
And he's just like, oh, well,he's a liability now.
Look at this.
And I think with that context,it really saying it out loud
makes this that earlier point ofhow Scott is interacting with

(28:32):
the team when they're strugglingis really, I think, the
influence of Charles comingthrough.
More generational trauma.
The only other thing I

SPEAKER_01 (28:42):
have for this issue is I like that at the start,
Moira testing Jean, I like thatwe've looped back around to
inspect what happened during herand Magneto's confrontation
together, where, you know, likeright before that, she just

(29:04):
stopped reality from beingdestroyed by the neutron galaxy
and was like this huge cosmicpower and then like a few weeks
later loses to Magneto in afight and I like that we get a
little bit of an explainer as towhy that occurred and you know
Moirai believes that like ainstinctive psychic circuit

(29:29):
breaker I believe is how theydescribe it engaged within Jean
cutting her power back from thatcosmic peak to a level that
she's able to actually cope withas a human.

SPEAKER_00 (29:42):
Yeah, that's a very good point.
It's very clear that there'smore than meets the eye in the
characters.
She can turn into a car.
It's nice to see that thecharacters are starting to kind
of put two and two together.
And you're almost like screamingat Moira to like just talk to
Jean and tell her what youfound.
She like needs to know what'sgoing on.

(30:03):
No, it's best to just, you know, bottle these things up inside.
Hold it all in.
Well, of course, we're getting, you know, as she's kind of
having this train of thought, she's whatever.
I have to go talk to Jean.
But then, you know, the wholemutant ex escaping.
The old gold tooth.
The old gold tooth.
tooth, being the only thing leftbehind.

(30:23):
R.I.P.
Old Man McWhorter.
Yep, he was not a nice person.

SPEAKER_01 (30:29):
It's probably the best way of putting it.
I'm extremely concerned lookingat just the timeline of how long
we've been recording.
I don't think that gettingthrough all four issues is
possible.
I

SPEAKER_00 (30:43):
mean, we can have like a two-parter.
I think it may break down to belike that.
We'll

SPEAKER_01 (30:48):
see how it goes.

SPEAKER_00 (30:49):
Yeah, we might fly through the Other ones, well,
maybe not.

SPEAKER_01 (30:54):
Issue 126 begins with the X-Men coming in hot in
the Blackbird, irritating moreScottish boat owners.
They arrive at the scene anddiscover an unconscious Lorna
and the corpse of AngusMcWhorter.
R.I.P.
Nightcrawler and Colossus meetup with Havoc and Jamie Madrox

(31:14):
and eventually succeed inconvincing them that the X-Men
are alive and to stop attackingthem.
Scott finds an unconscious Jean.
She briefly wakes and mistakeshis identity, saying, Jason, I
knew it was you, confusing Scottimmensely.
Eventually, everyone assemblesand Jamie fills the X-Men in on

(31:35):
what happened after their phonecall cut out.
One of Jamie's dupes tackledMutant X but was then taken over
by him and he escaped.
Moira preps a rifle to join inthe hunt and reveals that Mutant
X is her son Mutant X comesacross Jason Wingard, but notes
that his psychic shield is toostrong, so he finds a different

(31:59):
victim instead.
While searching for Mutant X,Phoenix once again has another
flashback, seeing herself in the18th century.
This time, the vision alsoincludes Jason.
The two are on horseback, following hounds in a hunt.
They arrive for the kill, butthe prey is a man dressed as a

(32:20):
stag.
Jason compliments Jean on heridea to hunt a man instead of
beast and offers her the daggerfor the kill.
Her madness fades and she findsherself at the husk of one of
Mutant X's victims.
Wolverine successfully tracksdown Mutant X who attempts to
overtake him.
Luckily, metal happens to be oneof his biggest weaknesses and

(32:44):
instead Wolverine andNightcrawler attempt to stop
him.
Mutant X renames himself toProteus which is good because
I'm really sick of saying mutantex and he bends reality and
their lives get weird and trippyfor a little bit.
Storm comes in to aid but herreality is bent as well and she

(33:05):
ends up crashing into theground.
The issue ends with Proteusgetting closer and closer to
Storm fighting against a galeshe's called to try and keep him

SPEAKER_00 (33:16):
at bay.
I was just thinking, it's been awhile since the X-Men have
destroyed some sort of vehicle.
Did they do that in this one?
Yeah.
Well, I mean, not in this issue.
I think they destroy like...
You're just saying they're duefor one.
Yeah, they're just due for one.
I mean, we have this interactionwith the fishermen on the boat.

(33:38):
Very

SPEAKER_01 (33:38):
angry.
You tin-plated twits, you almostcapsized us.

SPEAKER_00 (33:44):
They don't mince words, those Scots.
I felt like the scene of theX-Men arriving at Moor Island
was just so well executed.
It was like choreographed.
by scott right this we'resending in colossus first to
just kind of drop in he's justlike a bullet being shot out and

(34:09):
that we see that

SPEAKER_01 (34:10):
sucks that they're gonna have to replace that

SPEAKER_00 (34:12):
roof Well, I don't think they're too...
They're not really worried aboutthose things, I guess.
That stuff's expensive.
Yeah, that's like amulti-million dollar research
facility.
I imagine.
Anyways, test new powers.
I don't know.
There is a funny panel ofWolverine holding on to Aurora

(34:33):
as they fly down.
And he looks like he's holdingon for dear life as she brings
him down.
It was just a really funsequence with all of them kind
of making their way down to MerIsland.

SPEAKER_01 (34:48):
It is nice to see a good plan come together.
Banshee has to take the stairsbecause he can't fly right now.
Yeah.
He's still

SPEAKER_00 (34:57):
suited up, though.
I mean, the enemies don't knowthat he doesn't have his powers.
May as well look the role.
And I imagine his outfitprobably provides him with some
form of protection.
I mean, protection

SPEAKER_01 (35:08):
in

SPEAKER_00 (35:09):
the form of the gun that he's got at

SPEAKER_01 (35:10):
his

SPEAKER_00 (35:11):
hip right now.
I have to say, I really...
really like that sean is stillas involved with the team as he
is i think it would have beenvery easy for them to just leave
him at the x mansion and thatdidn't happen he's there on the
ground obviously he has therelationship with moira so of

(35:31):
course he wants to go and makesure she's doing okay but it's
been a long time since they've

SPEAKER_01 (35:36):
i mean she thinks he's dead

SPEAKER_00 (35:37):
yeah

SPEAKER_01 (35:38):
that's a very good point it's been a really long
time since they've talked toeach other and you know
establish that like we uh westill dating it's odd that he
wouldn't have phoned her like atany point he did try i think
they brought it up in like oneof those earlier issues where
they were like huh no one'sanswering the phone these were

(36:00):
different times when noteveryone had cell phones it's
way easier now

SPEAKER_00 (36:04):
well and we did see scott have to go and restore the
phone service the x mansionthat's true that took a long
time beer I've got to probablypay the bill to turn it back on.
But I think him being therereally, for me as somebody who
wasn't really exposed too muchto Sean Cassidy, I've really

(36:25):
come around to liking him.
I think he provides a lot ofexperience and levity to the
team.
And I think even more so nowwith this lingering injury that
really brings a lot of depth tohis character.
He's not just a power on a pieceof paper.
He's contending with this injurythat has fundamentally changed

(36:46):
him.
He's not as strong as he oncewas.
He can't fly.
He can't really be part of theteam in the same capacity that
he used to be and has reallykind of taken on a bit of like a
man in the chair type of rolewhile still being actively
involved with the team.
And I think it would have beenreally easy for the creative
team to just leave him behindand say, well, that's that.

(37:10):
He's back at the X-Men and justtaking care of while we get this
all sorted drinking tea to helphis throat through these issues
i was really really hoping forsean to overcome this injury and
and have a moment where hispowers kick back in so you can

(37:30):
imagine my disappointment whenthat didn't happen at any point
in time yeah i'm fine with howthings played out oh i am too
but i think much like mydisappointment in our last
episode where Peter is trying tosort through being a member of
the team and finding his placewe have a similar situation but

(37:52):
not as I think tonally wronglike it still makes a lot of
sense like I don't think you'dlose anything by maintaining
this injury for Sean and I thinkas I mentioned brings a lot of
depth to his character that'snot necessary like I don't think
that's true with Peter and Istill don't feel immensely
satisfied with how Peter's usedeven in this this arc, who is

(38:15):
somebody that should have amassive advantage over Proteus,
given his weakness to metal.
Yeah.
And it just feels like he'ssidelined in a lot of ways.

SPEAKER_01 (38:29):
Well,

SPEAKER_00 (38:29):
we're juggling a lot of characters right now.
I mean, but it's no more thannormal.
Like, other

SPEAKER_01 (38:36):
people are getting the spotlight.
Well, I mean, other people havedifferent things going on.
Like, I think it's a verygene-heavy story.
And we spend, you know, thoseextra panels with her doing her
visions of a life as an 18thcentury noblewoman.

SPEAKER_00 (38:52):
You're not wrong.
I just think...
You have two members of the teamthat have metal involved in
their power set, but you'rereally just using Wolverine.
I liked how they used Wolverinein here.
He's still hot-headed.
He's trying to, I think, kind ofdeal with this problem,

(39:15):
especially after getting reamedout by Scott.
I think in some ways he's tryingto prove himself.
And you have this lingeringthreat of Mutant X, and they
don't quite yet know the extentof this threat and I thought
about this while reading thebook I think Proteus is probably
the deadliest character thatwe've seen right like the most

(39:38):
on panel kills I can't think Iwould say so I can't think of
anybody else who's claimed asmany lives as he has he

SPEAKER_01 (39:46):
runs through quite a few people in these few issues
you know at other times we cankind of like infer oh this you
know destruction you know maybethere's some like sideline
casualties but there's a lot ofyou know X-Men fighting people
in more remote situations andthis one it really is just like

(40:08):
a very directly like Proteuskills that person and that
person and now this person he'sjust really jumping around yeah
as his I guess his power setdoesn't really provide him

SPEAKER_00 (40:20):
with a body

SPEAKER_01 (40:22):
yeah he burns through his I would assume he
like burned through his We seethis

SPEAKER_00 (40:34):
interaction between Jason and Proteus like a little
bit.
Very briefly.
Very briefly where he's tried orI think attempted to take
control of Jason's body and he'sbasically protected with like a

(40:55):
mental barrier.
or that prevents him from doinganything.
I think really, I think speaksto Jason's power level himself.
Like I think he's in control ofhimself and his powers probably
in a more mature way than eventhe X-Men.
Because like you would imaginethat even like somebody like, I
guess like Jean probably wouldhave this ability because we

(41:18):
don't really see Proteus capableof taking over Phoenix.
Similarly, I imagine likeCharles would probably be a big
challenge for him as wellalthough we we continue to kind
of like get this thread of ohthe more you use he uses his
powers the stronger he is andi'm it's interesting to just see

(41:39):
that they're like really hintingat the at the power and
capabilities that jason holdswhich i guess is like reality
warping right like that's kindof like what it is is like uh
yeah proteus is a reality warperwell and i think jason is as
well and maybe not as, uh, tothe extreme as him but like he

(42:02):
can make illusions i think isbasically what it is i

SPEAKER_01 (42:07):
don't think that's really reality warping though
this is just like a psychicstuff

SPEAKER_00 (42:13):
yeah yeah that's true that's very true i felt
like the way they portrayed hisreality warping to be really
awesome like just straightstraight acid trip

SPEAKER_01 (42:25):
yeah i remember sending you one of the panels i
texted to you over Discord andwas like, I feel like maybe some
drugs were involved in thecreation of these comics.

SPEAKER_00 (42:38):
I think it looks fantastic

SPEAKER_01 (42:41):
it looks very cool it must have been so fun to get
away from just do something veryout of the norm and out of like
the ordinary for what they

SPEAKER_00 (42:52):
must be doing like week to week and I imagine
you're constantly thinking ofways to portray these powers
like how like you're coming upwith this idea of a character
and you're trying to figure outokay well how do we show that
and this is like we've seen thiskind of happen in a lot of of
different ways over these books.
We've talked at length about howcool Phoenix is portrayed and

(43:15):
how we constantly see thissilhouette of the Phoenix in
kind of the backdrop when she'susing her powers at times.
Talked about how great they'veillustrated like the solar storm
or, you know, this radiationstorm that kind of happened way,
way earlier.
This is like another greatexample of just like a really

(43:35):
mind-warping, Hey, I'm going torip you to atoms.
And another really great scene, not in this issue, where he's
confronted by Cyclops and heuses his optic blast and he just
turns them into butterflies.
Butterflies are flowers.
It's such a fun panel.

(43:57):
It's super cool.
It really reminded me of thescene in Avengers, and I think
it was Infinity War, where Peterconfronts and he turns the
bullets into bubbles orsomething like that.
It was very reminiscent of thatvisualization, but obviously

(44:18):
this predates that by decadesand decades.
Very, very cool.
I really liked how theyportrayed his powers.
Even the way that they use it inthe later issues where it's kind
of like Inception-y is how Ifelt, where he turns the gravity
90 degrees.

SPEAKER_01 (44:36):
Well, he does that to Storm in this issue when she
comes to join in the fight heflips it so that she's upside
down essentially and she justslams into the ground

SPEAKER_00 (44:48):
yes I'm looking at that panel right now

SPEAKER_01 (44:50):
but he does do that later with Colossus and that's a
fun one too it's just like ohthe world's 90 degrees he starts
to just fall

SPEAKER_00 (44:58):
just plummets it's just so good I really really
enjoyed how they kind ofportrayed this and I think again
Storm is portrayed as the goatyou know she's just so powerful
so powerful that she's able toconjure up a hurricane wind gust
and we have this like awesomepanel of her using this gust to

(45:20):
try and push Proteus back andit's not working and you see
Logan and Kurt trying to come toterms with like they can't do
anything even Logan is like notreally like he's coming to terms
with this idea that he's notstrong enough And that the only
thing he can do is stay down andlet Storm do what Storm has to

(45:46):
do.
And there's a cool scene wherehe literally, we've seen it in
movies many times.
I think this is the first timeI've seen it in the book where
he uses his claws as like ananchor and just punches down
into the ground.
And he's over top of Kurt tryingto protect him from the wind.
And Proteus is just in thebackdrop as the silhouette.

(46:08):
marching forward like it's noteven phasing him

SPEAKER_01 (46:12):
before we move away from wolverine i want to just
call out something that theymake a point to showcase in the
comics as you know his realityis being warped around him i'll
just read the box bad as thingsare for nightcrawler they're
infinitely worse for wolverinewhose being is grounded in a

(46:36):
physical structure that nolonger exists is defined by
senses that are all now lying tohim.
They've made a point in the pastof how in tune Wolverine is with
his different senses and he'sable to figure things out like,
oh, these are robots because, you know, they smell different

(46:58):
and various things like that.
And it's something that we seemore of in the next issue, but
this has like a pretty similarsevere psychological

SPEAKER_00 (47:11):
effect on Logan.
Yeah, and I don't know thatwe've really seen him like this.
So...
weak?
Yeah.
And I don't mean that in anyother way as just he's so, I
think, taken aback by thestrength of Proteus, as if he's
never really encountered anotherbeing as strong as this.

(47:35):
Nor do I think the X-Men reallyhave, because they really have
to throw everything theypossibly can.
And I think they get a littlebit lucky, honestly.
Yeah.
In the next few issues wherethey're trying to deal with the
situation.
It's funny because we see, it'snot even in this issue, it'll be
in the next one, but there's amoment when Moira is trying to

(47:59):
kind of, I think, make ajudgment call and Scott stops
her.
And we can talk about this morewhen we get there, but they are
at their limit and are trying toreally find an opening to turn
the tide and they just cannotget it done.
And we see the three members ofthe X-Men here, all struggling

(48:22):
to just be any sort of effectiveagainst Proteus.
Well,

SPEAKER_01 (48:29):
we ended up having too much to talk about, so that
does it for this episode ofUncanny Book Club.
Thanks for listening, and wehope to see you next episode,
where we'll continue with theProteus arc and discuss issues
127 and 128.
