We spend too much time posting, watching, and scrolling with hopes of sparking change, when real impact starts in the mirror through internal alignment rather than external noise.

• Introduction to a three-part series called "The Real Reach" exploring how true influence begins with clarity, proximity, and identity
• Being informed is not the same as being aligned—we need to filter information through the lens of our unique purpose
• The most meaningful stages in life reflect what we built in silence through facing internal gaps
• Impact doesn't start when the world listens to you—it starts when you listen to yourself
• Your assignment is already within you—you are the uncut gem, carrying something rare
• Creating meaningful change requires turning energy inward to identify strengths and alignment
• Impact grows organically when we shine our light in our close circles before expanding outward

Take time for an alignment check: What's one area in your life where you've been loud but not aligned? Don't ignore it, because what you ignore will eventually lead you.

Jay (00:01):
Look.
We spend so much time posting, watching, scrolling, critiquing
the world, hoping that ourthoughts will spark change.
We're in our minds, cerebrallytrying to work out how to fix
the world, when the real impactstarts in the mirror.
In this episode, I challengeyou to shift your lens from

(00:26):
external noise to internalalignment.
The more you build in silence, the louder your impact is going
to be.
My name is Jay Floyd.
I am a leader, a tech leader, data engineering manager, data

(00:51):
engineering manager, brandambassador for Zapier and a
talent development coach.
My job is helping people findtheir uniquenesses, their unique
shape, and learning how toembrace it, love it and lean
into it for your success.
This is the Uncut Gems podcast.
Welcome in y'all.
I appreciate everybody hoppingin.
Before we dive in, I want to letyou know that this is not just

(01:12):
an episode.
This is part of a three-partarc that I'm calling the Real
Reach.
This is so, so crucial andrelevant.
I mean it's really on my heartto address this topic because
it's something that I seehappening a lot.
It's robbing us of our impact.
So I was like you know what I'mgoing to put together?

(01:33):
A series to dig in Not only diginto this A lot of podcasts.
Dig in.
You know I'm always trying tomove the needle.
I want to give y'all some tips, some tricks.
I want to give y'all someframework to start to change
this.
Over the next three episodes,we're going to explore how real

(01:53):
influence begins.
It's not with going viral, it'snot with mass visibility, it's
not with what you see onlinearguing back and forth or even
agreeing back and forth, butit's with clarity, proximity and
identity.
This arc, these three episodes, this is for anybody that's been

(02:15):
asking themselves why don't Ifeel like I'm making an impact?
Do I need a bigger platform ora better plan?
Or how do I stay aligned whileeverything around me is moving,
shifting under my feet?
Look, here's the truth.
Your reach will never be biggerthan your roots.
I'm going to say that one moretime your reach will never be

(02:39):
bigger than your roots.
So let's grow from the insideout.
Let's dig into this y'all.
I want to tell you that themirror is closer than it appears
.
We get loud too far from thework.
We get too loud.
Man.
We're in an age where peopleare shouting into digital

(03:00):
megaphones.
They're screaming on there,they're scrolling.
I don't like this.
I don't like that.
The government should do this.
Here's civics 101.
This person's an idiot, thatperson's an imbecile.
This is nonsense.
I'm going to it's craziness.
I'm going to challenge all ofy'all.

(03:32):
Right now, instead of screaminginto these digital megaphones,
I want you to ask is your housein order?
I submit to you that beinginformed is not the same as
being aligned.
Being informed is not the sameas being aligned.
There's a lot of informationout there and I know, yeah,
nobody wants to be uninformed, right, like, yeah, I know,
that's the big thing.
Everybody feels like, oh, theseuninformed people are voting,

(03:54):
they're making decisions, sothey want to be informed.
But I also want to tell youfrom the bottom of my heart
being informed is not the endstate.
You need to then take anotherstep, to be aligned, because all
of that information ain't meantfor your purpose.
You can't just eat it all, consume it all.

(04:20):
Feel like I got all theeducation, I got all the
information.
I am completely unbiased.
I'm right, let me post on socialmedia, let me rant on social
media.
No, no and no.
Look, we critique our systems,we critique our leaders.

(04:42):
We critique our systems, wecritique our leaders, we
critique our timelines, but wehaven't checked our habits, our
integrity and our focus Ain'tnothing wrong with critiquing
leaders and systems we shouldand even the folks on our
timeline.
Sometimes, maybe these are ourloved ones and you know our
circles there in our communitiesthat we do want to get them

(05:05):
better.
But the most meaningful momentsare different.
I want to talk about the powerof mirror moments, because the
most meaningful stages in yourlife will reflect what you built
in silence.
In silence when I start facingmy internal gaps.

(05:31):
Right, listen, please believeeverything that I'm trying to
turn people away from, becausethis is not a critique, this is
more of a.
I want to offer an alternativepath for better alignment and
fulfillment, everything that I'mtalking about.
I am the number.
I've been the number one personguilty of it.

(05:52):
That's why I know it.
Most of my life, the first 35years of my life, I spent being
the most vocal critic ofeverything.
Right, you ever go to collegeand you meet that person who's
pretty smart and you know theylike to dig into what and why

(06:13):
and how, and I was likeeternally stuck as that person.
Right, it's constant.
Hey, this will be easier ifthat.
This will be easier if that, why?
This doesn't make sense In myopinion.
That and I would throw out alot of great ideas, but guess
what?
None of that complaining andcritiquing was really aligning

(06:33):
with my purpose.
Right, and maybe some of it atthe beginning was to hone my
voice.
But you have to be careful notto get stuck in that.
And when I started facing myinternal gaps right, not looking
outside, not.
Oh, the Christian faith is thisor the American government is

(06:55):
that?
When I started looking atmyself, my career, my faith, my
trauma, clarity I gained waslouder than anything I could
have said out loud, anything Icould have said out loud.

(07:15):
Impact does not start when theworld listens to you.
It starts when you do.
Look, the assignment is alreadyin you.
There's nothing you really haveto go find right, you don't
have to go.
It's not like a video gamequest where you got to go pick
up jewels on an adventure.
You are the uncut gem.
That's what this episode is allabout.
That's what this podcast is allabout.
I'm not on here dropping jewels, although some of y'all might

(07:38):
like the bars.
I'm really on here helping yousee that you are the jewel.
Your assignment starts with you.
The truth is you alreadycarrying something rare.
You have something no one elsehas.
But rare doesn't mean visible.
Rare doesn't mean obvious.

(07:59):
Rare takes reflection.
Your next level won't come frommore approval.
It'll come from deeperalignment.
Level won't come from moreapproval, it'll come from deeper
alignment.
So this is to all of my folksout there who spend a lot of
time online sharing think pieces, even writing think pieces,

(08:22):
going back and forth, writinghuge paragraphs I want you to
ask yourself I know you thinkyou're right, I know you do, I
know you do, and guess what youmight be.
You might be 100% right.
But guess what?
Is that your purpose?
To be right arguing with JohnDoe, is that really your purpose

(08:47):
To share a post that all yourfriends agree with?
Is that really your purpose toshare a post that all your
friends agree with?
Is that your purpose?
And if not, why are youspending so much time on it?
That time should go elsewhere.
You should be developing whatyour purpose actually is.

(09:07):
You know this thought first cameto me the whole concept of
these episodes in this threeepisode arc Years ago.
My first thought was why do wepost so much about what we don't
like and we never share what wedo stand for?
We never do Right.

(09:28):
I could bring it all the wayhome.
I got a lot of friends who arestaunchly Democrat and they've
spent the last 18 months upset, fearful, irritated, offended by
Project 2025.
Right now I'm not going to getinto the left and right of the

(09:52):
politics.
They have every reason to feelhow they feel.
Right, they got every reason tofeel how they feel about that.
But here's my question if you dofeel like that, if you are
upset, if you are offended, ifyou are fearful for what it
might do to you, what's thebetter response?

(10:13):
To give it more attention bytalking about it, complaining
about it, pushing back on it,talking about how wrong it is,
or to come up with your ownproject, come up with your own
manifesto, come up with your ownstatement of what you believe
in.
What do you believe in?
Come up with your own statementof what you believe in.
What do you believe in If youfeel this one is so wrong?

(10:39):
You got every right to.
At what point do you say here'sthe one that does work and
here's my part in it.
Here's where I'm uniquelygifted to move it forward.
Guess what?
I know you might want to hear adifferent topic.
You know, I understand.
I know you might want to hear adifferent topic.
You know I understand that youmight want to hear a different
approach.
You might want to hear somebodysay, hey, kudos to you.

(11:00):
We need to keep complaining.
That's not what you're going toget here, because who I am as a
coach, what this show is allabout, is all about finding your
unique alignment.
Where are you rare?
Are you the only person with acomplaint about the government?
Are you, are you a one of onein that?

(11:22):
No, no.
Are you a one of one in yourunique strengths, your unique
shape, your unique experiences, your unique approach to solving
the problem?
Yeah, don't be too loud, toofar from the work.

(11:45):
Where is the work?
The work is in me, identifyingwhat do I need to work on, how
can I align myself for mypurpose?
And then, once I get in mypurpose, guess what that's when
the magic happens, because youknow what happens and we're
going to really get deeper intothis in the next two episodes.
But once I work on myself, if Iturn all that energy inward,

(12:09):
figure out what my strengths are, what my struggles are, start
to gain alignment on how I showup in the world, turn that
energy then onto the people inmy close circle, my family, my
friends, are seeing the new me.
They're seeing what I'm allabout, even if my stance is
political, if my stance isspiritual, if my stance is

(12:30):
religious, even if my stance ispolitical, if my stance is
spiritual, if my stance isreligious, if my stance,
whatever my stance is, if Ibecome a better example of that,
if I start showing that lightand shining that light on a
daily basis, then neweropportunities start to open for
me.
Guess what?
Then my family, my friends, myinner circle, those people are

(12:54):
speaking about me and they knowthe light that I'm shining.
Then I get an opportunity toopen it up into a bigger arena.
Then I get an opportunity tospeak at a certain conference.
Then I get an opportunity totake the stage here.
Then somebody says you knowwhat you should be on this
podcast, because they're talkingabout the same thing that you
like to shine a light on.
Then the doors are open for meby the fertile soil that I am

(13:15):
not only living in but I'vehelped to cultivate.
And now, even if I don't makeit to the millions of people to
listen to me, I've alreadyoperated in my purpose in the
tens, dozens and hundreds ofpeople that I touched in my
inner circle and next thing, youknow, it starts opening up.

(13:40):
Your reach gets biggerorganically.
Your reach gets biggerorganically.
So here's the alignment check ofthe week.
What's one area in your lifewhere you've been loud but not
aligned?
And look, don't beat yourselfup.

(14:02):
This is not about shame, it'sabout clarity.
I want you to take a pencil ora pen and write this down, even
grab your phone and write it ina note, or just speak it into a
voice note, document it, talk toGod about it.
What's one area of your lifewhen you've been loud but not

(14:24):
aligned?
Don't ignore it, because whatyou ignore Will eventually lead
you, and you don't want to beled by something you were too
scared to face.
Alright, so, as I laid out, this is a plan to start building
More organic, aligned Dynamic.
All right, so, as I laid out, this is a plan to start building
more organic, aligned, dynamic, fulfilling impact in the world.

(14:49):
Next week, we're going to diveinto circles, not stages.
We're going to talk aboutsomething that I just touched on
.
We'll talk about why yourimmediate circle is more
important than any crowd, butfor right now, I want to leave
you with a track that I did afew years back.
It touches on this a little bit.
I wrote it at a time when I wasconfronting some generational
weight, spiritual inheritanceand the pressure to be something

(15:13):
more than what I was raisedaround.
Right, I just want to talkabout all of it.
You know, I just pictured thisa boy in a barbershop learning
what life is all about from themen in there around him, right,
learning that all of thesethings we can complain about

(15:36):
From racism, sexism, slavery, discrimination, intolerance, all
of these things that deservetheir complaints but I can't

(16:00):
change them without me beingreally me, who I am.
And in order to be me andfigure out how I make impact, I
got to look in that mirrorBecause, guess what?
A lot of the things that Icomplain about in the world are
manifestations of things thatare also still in me, and if I'm
not careful, I can go try toattack them and break them down,

(16:20):
but I haven't broken them downin myself, and you can see that
play out in almost everyorganization or movement of
humans in human history.
Right, there's a line in thissong where I said one of the
bars I said, the most evilspirits are the ones we inherit.

(16:41):
That's real.
The most evil spirits are theones we inherit.
So, as this track plays, justsit with that mirror.
You ain't got to be perfect, but you should be honest with
yourself, because that's whereall your strength is waiting.
Peace y'all.

(17:28):
Soft brush if you try and keepit wavy and never let beef get
in the way of getting gravyMarinate when it's time to set
that plate.
Try and be too good as theenemy of being great.

(17:52):
We'll see you next time withprincipality enemies.
Same valley of shadows, thesame Judas Iscariot.
Y'all know the narrative.
We shooting pistols like PeteMadvich, all trying to be the
livest one.
But ain't none of us dopeenough to carry that cross, not
even Iris, and we grew up withthem cornrows, braids and wands.
So don't let them headlinesfeed your brainwaves.

(18:13):
I never tried to make a dollar.
I was always making change.
Around these war shacks whereall the faces change.
The whole place is strange.
The amazing thing is I wake upevery day trying to change the
whole game.
Blaze the whole thing with fireand gas cans, calling me a
grouch you don't want to admirein trash cans.
Told my young lions use yourtools.
Only one of them is schooled.

(18:33):
There's other roles you canchoose.
That's so true.
Matter what you gotta learn howto hold your tool and apply the
right pressure, twist the rightdirection, master
self-reflection, clean yourmirrors.
The most evil spirits are theones we inherit.
Know the role of the stick andknow the role of the care.
It's a thin line between apirate and a pair, cause
stealing is a sin and lying is ademand.

(18:55):
So think about the pirates.
Eye-patching while you're wet.
Now, the things that we wearcan reflect our scars, cause we
ain't never too far from ourlast war and we might even slur
our arms and grow our beards onjust to look fearsome.
But soft brush if you try andkeep it wavy.
Never let beef get in the wayof getting gravy and marinate.

(19:16):
When it's time to set thatplate, try and be too good as
the enemy of being.
We'll be right back.
We fight the same battles ofprincipality enemies, same

(19:37):
valley of shadows and same JudasIscariot.
Y'all know the narrative weshootin' pistols like Pete
Manvich, all tryin' to be thelivest one, but ain't none of us
dope enough to carry that cross?
Not even Iverson, yeah, noteven Iverson, yeah, not even I,
uh, uh, not even I, uh, not evenI, not even I, not even I Thank

(20:44):
you.
