(00:02):
Prepare yourself for the terror, theprison of madness. We have a few
inter and Nonritter. Welcome to UnsungHorrus with LUNs and Denica. Leave all
(00:31):
your sanity behind. It can't helpyou. Now. Welcome to another episode
of Unsung Horrors podcast, where wediscuss underseen horror movies, specifically those with
fewer than one thousand views on letterboxed. I'm Erica, I'm Lance. We're
not doing that this episode though. It's june'sploitation. Yes, it's both a
good and a bad thing. Well, it's never bad, just because we
(00:56):
have to sit here for a while. Yeah, I packed my lunch lunch,
yeah, I mean it really behere, but I mean that's what
keeps me hydrated and getting going. That's a lush that's no, you're not.
I also have my sleeping bag, yes, and I'm going to be
in my pj's already. I'm readyto go. I have no pants on,
of course, not keeping it keepingit really aer Yes, speaking of
(01:19):
clothes, I have your very veryearly birthday present for you. Yeah,
so it's very very I know,but we'll see. Here's the thing is
is Brian Sour. He's put outthis huge line of director's shirts. I
don't want to spoil like what he'sdoing in the future, so I won't
mention it because I asked him aboutsomething specifically and he said, yes,
(01:42):
I'm doing that. So I waslike, okay, cool. But he's
got tons of director's shirts, youknow, directed by Reggie A Day,
things like that. So I gotmyself a Sergio Martino shirt. Yes,
And while I was doing it,I was like, you know what,
why buy one when I can buytwo and one of them can be and
I'm giving it to you this episodebecause I think this director is very much
(02:04):
a june'sploitation director. Okay, sohere I mean just to say too,
there's a couple of designs and shirtsthat Brian has on his on the site
that I was gonna, yeah, order myself. Maybe maybe I'm saving you
money then, because here's one. They're all good. They are they are
all amazing. Oh shit, yes, yeah, perfect for Jeane's ploitation.
(02:27):
William Girdler. Oh, I likethe yellow font on the black m hmm.
This is good. Thank you somuch. You're welcome. Happy very
early birthday. Yeah, it's notexcited about my birthday and I still have
like five months. Yeah, Iknow, no, when I want three
three months out three and a half, I could, you know, honestly,
(02:50):
I could have like bought it andlike given it to you then,
but I'm so bad about doing that. I'm like, if I buy something
for someone, like I need togive it to them right away. So
no, I respect that. That'sgreat. Yeah, I'm just gonna stay
shirtless though as well. I'm alsoshirtless. That's fine. Yeah no,
no, no, I wasn't.I didn't give it to you so you'd
put a shirt on like you doyou however, you need to be comfortable.
That's fine, Thank you so much. I'll put them next to my
(03:12):
coronitis. This is exciting. Whata way to start june'sploitation. Indeed,
all right, So for those ofyou who aren't familiar, June Exploitation is
a challenge put together by the websiteSlash podcast f this movie. It's thirty
days, different categories every single daysome days, I mean there's multiple free
(03:36):
spaces throughout the month, usually threeor four. But you have categories like
cars and blaxploitation, and then youhave like specific actors like this year's Barbara
Steele and so every day different category. I love this month because this is
a month that we get to gooutside of horror for a change and like
really start. I mean we dothat anyway, and when we do kind
(03:59):
of like side watches, but thisis fun. I'm talking too much because
this is going to be a verylong episode and we really need to jump
in because we both have thirty moviesto talk about each Yeah, let's get
started. Okay, let's just jumpin. So Day one is Roger Corman
tribute. I watched kill Zone fromnineteen ninety three. This was on two
B. This is directed by SirioSantiago. It is a completely forgettable,
(04:27):
repetitive Vietnam War actioner. It's gotDavid Carrodine in it. He's either half
awake or going forward one hundred andten percent. Like there's just no consistency
throughout this whole thing, no inbetween for him. There's no characters to
really latch onto, no interesting conflict. It's like just back and forth shooting
(04:48):
for the most part. But itdoes go for it with a very end.
So I mean, I'm not sayingit's not worth watching, but it's
definitely one that if you put onyou're probably gonna be on your phone most
of the time, but you know, pay attention if you get to the
end. So it wasn't a greatstart to the month. It's actually a
good thing. It wasn't technically myfirst watch because I watched these like all
(05:10):
kinds of out of order same Soyeah, kill Zone, you know,
really just it's just that generic cover. David Carrodin on the cover. There's
probably an explosion in the background. He's probably wearing sunglasses. Yep, there
you go, hold the gun. There is sixteen like I don't want guns.
(05:30):
Yeah, this poster's got me sold, don't you review? Not so
much? Yeah, that's you know, there's something to be said for you
know, Roger Corman knows what he'sdoing with his posters, but not so
much with all the movies. Butwe love him, and I should say
that a lot of like if thismovie's calendar came out a little late,
(05:51):
and I think it's because they werereally trying to put it together as being
very Corman centric because of his recentpassing, which I definitely appreciate. Absolutely.
Yeah, I mean every gene'sploitation, regardless of if there is a specific
Roger Corman, which I think thereis there has been in the past,
like a Roger Corman category or anAIP or something. Yeah. I always
(06:13):
fit in a Roger Corman because he'swhen you think of jeen'sploitation, you think
Roger Coran, Yeah, or Williamor Fred Williamson, which I'm sure you've
got. I do have a FredWilliams of course, Poe boy action,
of course. All right, whatabout you for your Roger Corman's rebute.
Okay, I have his directorial debutfrom nineteen fifty five. I went with
Five Guns West, which I thinkI started watching on TV, but something
(06:36):
was off. This was I thinkthis might have been my first one I
watched, and I think I switchedover to YouTube. Okay, so it's
out there though. Yeah, Ihad fun with it. It's about five
convicts who are scheduled to be hanged, but they accept pardons on condition that
they joined the Confederate Army due tothe army being desperate for men during the
last days of the American Civil War. Scumbag convicts, they're kind of you
(06:59):
know, it's an in the West. So immediately when they start talking and
they start kind of fighting with eachother and hounding each other. I was
kind of reminded of Orvil Wanzer's TheDevil's Mistress that opening scene. Obviously it's
a nineteen fifty five. It's notas vulgar as what they're talking about,
like a Devil's Mistress, but atthe same time you can tell that they're
there just as a forced group, pretty much kind of doing what they're told
(07:21):
to do. And then they endup going to this cabin where a woman
and her old uncle live and theyall start kind of conspiring amongst themselves.
They're sent by the generals to they'regiven a test to go after a trader
and a shipment of like money thathe stole. So they all start saying,
okay, well I want the money, or they start kind of teaming
(07:43):
up. Let's get the money forourselves. So they start fighting with each
other, and then some of theguys start falling for the girl and it
gets real silly, and she endsup kind of falling for one of them.
It's just it's kind of a verydramatic Western I'll kind of throw in
there. The performances are fun, though they're all kind of crazy. There's
this one scene where, like thecraziest of the convicts has He's looking at
(08:05):
a fire and there's a flashback sceneof this redheaded woman that he killed in
San Antonio and he's like, oh, I could see your hair in the
fire. So I was like, yeah, let's get more of this.
This is dark and deep more Devil'sMistress. But yeah, it's fun to
watch. I mean, it doesn'thave a lot of flare. It's Corman's
first directorial debut, but I hada good enough time with it. Okay,
(08:33):
my gun's West, my condemned manwho traded a sentence to die or
a thousand the one chance to live. How we have to do is make
a hard four day ride and aboutthree days cross over the Union lines,
hold up a stage it'scorded by Yankeetroops, and then bring down Trader all
the way back here for Southern justice. That is quite an order. Darting
(08:56):
John Lunnon a man dedicated to adesperate cause, and Dorothy Malone a girl
destined in all all the pleasures andpains of love. And then day two,
I'm gonna jump straight to Day twoZombies. I went with the Invasion
of the Dead from nineteen seventy three. This is a Renee Cardona Oh okay
Senior starring Zovek and Blue Demon.Oh fun okay, yeah yeah that just
(09:24):
those two names, like, well, I didn't know much about Zovek,
I know, yeah said a BlueDemon you had me? Yeah. And
if you look at the poster too, like it's one of it's so many
of those movies are great, theCardona movies. The posters are they kind
of draw you in immediately, butwhen you get like, you know,
Santos or Blue Demon in there, you're sold. But yeah, it's about
(09:46):
like these firebar balls that start fallingto earth and people are sent to investigate,
including Blue Demon, who seems towork for the government as some sort
of genius spy. Of course heholds the information to anything and everything you
could ever want. And then wehave Professor Zovec, who I had never
heard of before. He pops inand helps some archaeologists determine what cave paintings
(10:09):
mean, and they team up andthey find out that these fireballs are making
the dead come alive as they flyover and like cemeteries and stuff. There's
this great scene of it landing nextto a cemetery. The dead start rising.
They're walking through this kind of foggy, rainy forest and rocky terrain,
very reminiscent of like Lambert Obaba's likedemons, like that poster. It's it
(10:33):
really works. But the character ProfessorZovac, who I'd never heard of,
he's a badass. He's not onlyan escape artist because he's introduced in the
movie doing like this Houdini type Egyptiancoffin trick to get out of in front
of an audience, but he canalso read minds, having developed a sixth
sense and his training in Egypt. But he's a hero in this. He's
fighting zombies. He's literally picking upthese men, just kind of exhibiting his
(10:56):
sheer strength because he's kind of lankyand stuff. But like you can tell
he's he's you know, he's probablyis probably tougher than Blue Demon. But
he's throwing these these zombies at otherzombies, you know, to knock them
down with Doramino effect. Blue Demonscenes though, are just him giving theories
and history lessons to others, includingtalking about Burke and hair. When Caidavers
(11:18):
start disappearing, okay, and hegoes like it's like a five minute long
scene of him talking about the burkeand hair. And the reason for this
is because Zovac was killed during filmingof this movie. Oh he did a
lot of his own stunts and hefell from a helicopter. He only made
two movies. The other already watchedhim or I already added to my watch
list. But Blue Demon was broughtin to film scenes and to pad the
(11:41):
runtime, so they don't really havescenes. They don't have scenes together.
It's kind of Blue Demon like inthis Headquarters, just spouting off these like
long winded facts about bullshit that hasnothing to do about anything. So,
yeah, I want to watch thatother movie with Professor Zovec because he's very
kind of captivating, you know, not a good actor by any means,
(12:03):
but a lot of fun to watch. I do recommend that one. What's
your zombie pick? So a fewof my picks this month, I was
filling in blind spots for bigger directors, so I watched Toby Hooper's Mortuary from
two thousand and five. This wason Prime. I put this one off
for a long time, and itturns out I wasn't missing anything. I
(12:24):
know that, like, there's peoplewho love this movie, and certain people
have written about Toby Hooper, whowould defend it, but it's early two
thousands like that. You're not gonnaget me. I'm sorry, you're just
not. You know, a lotof people that I follow really like this
one on Letterbox, but for me, it's just it's it's really just a
(12:48):
victim of the time it was made, you know, because it's got like
bad cgi new metal anyway, ifthis was made in the seventies or early
mid eighties, with this set andthis premise, it's I forgot her name,
Pets cemetery wife. She's in it. She's a mortician. But like
(13:09):
I think there's I think it's supposedto be a horror comedy, but it
really just the comedy does not landbecause she gets a job as a mortician
in this new town. She movesher kids there with her, and it's
this run down house and the morgueis in the basement, and there's a
(13:30):
cemetery attached to the house and it'sin this really like industrial area, so
like the setting is really neat, but like there's these moments where she is
like fumbling around with like all thelike mortuary mortician equipment and stuff like that,
Like oh what's this and blah blahblah. I'm like, I'm like,
(13:50):
ma'am, did you go to schoolto do this? Because it really
seems like it's your first fucking day. And I guess it's supposed to be
funny. I didn't think it was. It didn't land for me. I
don't know. I wanted to likeit because it's Toby Hooper. It has
its moments for sure, but like, yeah, I saw, I've never
(14:11):
seen it. I don't think you'remissing. I didn't realize it had any
type of comedy tones to it,so I don't even know if it was
intentional, but it feels like itwas supposed to be, but it just
doesn't doesn't land, And it's notlike a full horror comedy. It's not
TCM two, it's not that. But there's just especially with her as a
(14:31):
motician and like just kind of beinglike bumbling with it, Like it would
make sense if that was Bruce Campbell, I would be like, Okay,
I get it, but it's petcemetery wife and I'm like, you're not
funny. I I'm sorry anyway.Mortuary two thousand and five not whatever is
what it is? Revenge moving on, I watched Night Evil Soul. I
(14:56):
don't know what year it is becausemultiple sources have different dates. I did
have to download this one. It'sin the eighties, nineteen eighty one or
nineteen eighty eight. So I wassold on this from the description of it
because basically it's about a witch whois killed and she sends her cats back
for revenge. And I was like, fuck yeah, cat revenge movie.
I'm all about it. It's notquite a Bacchan echo movie kind of.
(15:22):
It has elements of that for sure, but this is basically it's more about
like a woman who's possessed by aspirit from a lake, who is accused
of using witchcraft to lure men awayfrom their wives, and she gets murdered.
So the letterbox synopsis or someone's reviewI can't remember says that she unleashes
an army of cats for revenge, and that happens in one scene where there's
(15:46):
tons of cats. There's flinging catseverywhere, like you can tell there's people
offscreen just throwing cats. It's likeNight of a Thousand Cats. There's there
are some great cat quote unquote transformationscenes though, which are kind of the
highlight like when we've talked about likewerewolf transformations and even like the cat transformation
in Bloody Killer, blood Thirsty Killer, like stuff like that is you know,
(16:11):
I think it's a lot of fun. So there's one scene though,
where it goes from her as aas a woman to a woman wearing a
cat mascot head and it's fantastic. It was like an Hour of the Wall
like that big fantastic, but itwas it was like giant size on her
head. It was so funny. So yeah, it's fun. I'm sure
(16:34):
at the rate that you know, boutique blue ray labels are going, this
will probably get dug up somewhere andat least at some point I wouldn't say,
like, you know, go outeaier way to find it to watch,
because I had to download it.But if it makes its way out
there someday, I think it's worthworth checking out. Nice Night, Evil
Soul. It's a good one.Okay, Day three Revenge for Me.
(16:57):
I watched Armed Sponse from nineteen eightysix by fred Olin Ray. He was
just a guest on Gruby Doom Samthey had oh yeah, they had him
on their their stream. Yeah, everyone should go check that out. Yeah,
for sure, they're great. Butthis one stars David Carodine. He's
back. I bet his name popsup a few times. Lee Van Cleef,
(17:22):
Oh, yes, Michael Berryman okay, and Mako the Wizard in the
original Conan movies. I don't knowim room he pops up. He's a
recognizable face. Okay. So thisis It's about David Goss, who's the
lead guy in She which he's anokay actor, right. He plays a
private eye and he's murdered after unknowinglytaking a job for the Kuza boss.
(17:45):
And David Carradine is his father, who is a bartender, and he teams
up with his own dad, adrunk retired cop played by Lee van Cleef,
to find out who killed a sonand to get revenge on who killed
him. The problem with Carrodine ishe has PTSD and he gets stuck in
constant flashbacks from when he was inVietnam and he killed a lot of young
(18:10):
soldiers. This is a sequel toKill Zone. Sounds like it could beat
This is nineteen eighty six. Whatwas kill Zone ninety three? So maybe
this is a prequel. Yeah,it's a prequel, but yeah, then
the whole thing apparently involves some weirdstatue that the Yakuza want. It's a
weird storyline. It doesn't really matter, you're just kind of yeah. I
(18:33):
mean, the main reason I watchedit is like to watch like a drunk
David Carrodine and even Lee van Kleefseems extremely kind of drunk and not caring
what he's doing. And for thatreason alone, I really enjoyed it.
I loved it. Okay, supercheesy. It's like a bad comic book
come to life. A lot ofyou know, tough guy antics from Krodine
and Van Kleef. There's a crazyfinal battle with grenades and assault rifles,
(18:56):
crazy explosions. This kind of feltlike what Begos is VFW wanted to be
like. Ok it worked with thesecharacters because you know, Carotene, Caroendine,
and Lee van Cleef they're known forsome good roles in action and stuff,
and they pulled it off, andwith you know, fred O and
Ray directing, it just worked alot better. Dick Miller has a few
(19:18):
scenes in this with Loreen Landon, you know, for Mania Cop, and
they're both fantastic. Spoiler alert, there's major squibs on both of them and
their scenes, so it's very funto watch. There's a corrupt friend played
by Ross Hagen who's totally modeling hischaracter after jack death Tim Thomerson and transwers
(19:40):
like it's physically that he looks likehim, but the way he talks and
acts and kind of carries himself,so I immediately fell in love with him.
But yeah, a lot of familiarfaces kind of pop up, and
the Susan Stokey who's the lead fromthe Power, one of your favorites,
which I'll be talking about later inthis episode. Michael Berryman, who I
brought already said earlier. He playsthe main villain's right hand man and he
(20:02):
gives out fortune cookies to his victimsso they'll open one up. There's a
scene where a guy opens one upand he says you will have a bright
future, and he's sitting in hiscar in the car explodes. Good stuff.
I get it. Not great, but it's a lot of fun.
So that was my revenge pick.Okay, day four's free space our first
(20:25):
free space. I watched arm responsefrom twenty seventeen. Oh you did it
to yourself? I did it?Yeah, I was like, okay,
Letterbox, here's the Armed Response thatI had in my watch list with Lee
Van Cleef and David Carrodine. What'sthis Armed Response? Oh? It's directed
by John Stockwell from Albert Pune's RadioactiveDreams and John Carpenters Christine. He's Keith
(20:48):
Gordon's best friend. I knew itwas going to be bad because it's a
WWE Studios production. Yeah, andit stars Wes Snipes. Also, if
you look at the poster, it'satrocious and hash and Seth Rollins, who's
he's a wrestler. He's an actorwrestler right now, and he has like
(21:11):
this it's like fun really canive andlaugh that he makes sure to do a
few times in the movie. Butit's a total mess. Oh my god,
you gave this a half star?Yeah? Wow, I hate giving
out half stars. But they thisdid not have any redeeming qualities, like
I Yeah, I watched. Sothe funny story about this one is,
you know, I went and visitedthe in laws for a week in San
(21:33):
Angelo. They don't have a smartTV everything. We bought them an Apple
TV for the living room a whileback. Yeah, in the guest room,
it's this old TV that has likelike the picture's broken. There's like
a line going through the mill.I got that in my bedroom. Oh
really, yeah, there's yeah, and it progressively has gone. The picture's
just gotten dark, darker and darker. And you know, when we got
(21:55):
there the first night, I waslike, we're gonna we're gonna go get
you guys a new TV. AndSarah's you know, parents are like,
yeah, yeah, we're planning todo that. But you know, we
didn't get one too. The lastnight we were there. Oh okay,
So I watched this on the firstthe only night that I had the smart
TV, I was like, allright, let me upload two let's add
two B. Yeah, let's watchfucking Armed Response from twenty seventeen. It
(22:21):
looked great on the TV, butthis movie terrible. That's like the best
part of the movie is that Inow know I will go back to sant
Angelo and there'll be a smart TVin the fucking bedroom in the guest room,
and it's gonna have like your twoB recommendations are all going to be
related to this now. It's allgonna be like ww studio shit, yeh,
like alate yourself, Lance, Yeah, I mean I can't even I
(22:44):
don't even want to try and talkabout what it is because it's frustrating to
talk about. I'm gonna bring It'slike about some AI military compound that starts
making the soldiers hallucinate and have visionsof like bad stuff they did in their
life. There was one good soldierwho sees what the other bad soldiers did,
so they start wanting to kill it. I'm out. You already gave
as a half star. There's noway I'm ever gonna watch this. Also,
(23:07):
it's produced by Gene Simmons. Ohgod, who pops up is like
some inmate with like she has afake bald cap on. It's terrible.
Tons of drone shots in this shot, which is a big turn off for
me. Like, I know, establishing shots are cool and stuff, but
when I would do some stuff byscreeners overuse of drone shots just it kind
(23:30):
of ruins it for me. Yeah, it seems like it just looks cheap
digital gore CGI blood. Yeah.Oh but I'm sorry, this is important.
This is important. Yeah, mynotes are all over the place,
by the way, guys, soI'm gonna be jumping all over two child
kills. Oh fuck a little girl'sriding a bike and rolls into like this
oncoming semi It doesn't show it,but it happens. And then a little
(23:56):
girl shot in the back of thehead and she pops up like one of
the visions throughout this AI Temple thing. Yeah at it, armed response Wesley
Snipes and hash seth Rawlins, directedby John Nobody else wants christ only only
me because dead kid. It's terrible. Yeah, this is I gave it
(24:18):
a half star and I hate givingout half stars. You do your your
lover. I am. I fight. I fight for the worst of them,
and I could not. There's noway I can have an argument for
this one. Yeah, what wasyour for? I'm going to turn it
around here because my Free Space wasone of my favorites of the month,
and you will love this movie.Cisco Pike from nineteen seventy two. It's
(24:42):
streaming on Prime. It's probably onYouTube as well. I think it's I'm
pretty sure. I looked it upand as a Blue Ray releaseer but stars
introducing Chris Christopherson, Oh, KarenBlack, and Gene Hackman. Gene Hackman
is a narc corrupt cop. Heforces Cisco that's Chris Christofferson to sell ten
(25:06):
thousand worth of weed that he stolefrom another that Gene Hackman stole from another
criminal. Because Christofferson used to deal, he's trying to get out of it.
He's trying to get back into musiche had he used to have this
career in music with one of yourfavorites, Harry Dean Stanton oh Nice in
it, who is a very accomplishedposition himself in real life. Yeah,
(25:27):
and both of them. And sothe theme song in this like Chris Christophferson
did it. It's like I thinkit's called like the Pilgrim or something.
I'll throw that on like the autrofor this episode. But like this movie
that takes place in Venice Beach, and it's most of the movie is Christopferson
(25:47):
just like nothing really happens in it. He's just kind of going place to
place trying to sell drugs, andevery now and then Gene Hackman will pop
in and be a dickhead because he'sa cop, and then Karen Black will
be like, you said you'd quitdrugs, And anyway, this movie is
just a complete I hate to sayit's such a vibe, but it really
is like California's seventies vibe and furtherenhanced by Chris Christopher sending Karen Black in
(26:14):
this. And then when Harry Deane'sDan showed up, I was just like,
oh my god, that had somemovie. Just how could this movie
get better? It just did.I love it and I know if you
watch it you'll fall in love withit too. Yeah, media watch list.
So then after that it was ninetiesaction. I think a lot of
people went with some Hong Kong moviesand that was a smart pick. I
(26:36):
didn't do that. I picked timeBomb from nineteen ninety one. This was
on Prime and I did it becauseof the cast. So it's got Michael
Bean and he was in some sortof like Super Soldier program. He's supposed
to be dead, but he resurfacesand like some people who were in that
(26:56):
program see him and they're like,is that so? And so Billy Blanks
is in this. Yeah, Robertcoulp is in this, and he's in
another one of my favorites from themonth that I'll talk about later. I
watched one with his son. Whatch'all talk about later? Okay, Billy
Blanks son or Robert coulps son RobertColpson. He shows cock no be a
better culp young man serious or howeverold you are now probably older than me
(27:21):
actually anyway, so many scenes fromthis film are ripped off from The Terminator.
You know, there's and Michael Bean'sit. Yeah, yeah, exactly,
and like there's this shootout in frontof a sex film theater that ends
up inside of it. That's reallygreat. Uh, there's lots of nudity.
It was a lot better than Iwas expecting. Like I went in
(27:44):
with really low expectations on this one. I was like, Okay, Michael
being early nineties Billy Blanks, like, we'll just do it. You know,
this seems like a good June's ploitationmovie. And I actually it was
pretty entertaining, I think just becauseI love Terminator and seeing like some of
that, I was like entertained bythat element of it. But most of
it is being like he doesn't rememberwho he used to be and so he's
got people chasing him all of asudden. Is that what the Bourne movies
(28:08):
are about? Maybe? Yeah,I think so, and he figures it
out eventually. I don't know,Maybe it's yeah, I think the first
Yeah, but yeah, i'd recommendit for you know, just a kind
of dumb Sunday afternoon type movie. That's right at my alley. What about
you for nineties action? Okay,so I picked Judgment Night from nineteen ninety
(28:29):
three, The Cuba good Junior andMillion Yeah Me The West of as Cuba
Gooden Junior, Jeremy Piven and StephenDorf, directed by Stephen Hopkins Peter Green,
who zed in Pulp Fiction. Heplays one of the main villains named
Sikes. But the main villain thoughis Dennis Leary. Very nineties. I'm
(28:49):
sure a lot of listeners have watchedthis before. I it kind of I
missed this one in nineteen ninety three. I was not I didn't watch it
then. I think I watched itin the last few years, like fairly
recently. In it I liked it. Yeah, it's a good little thriller.
It's about four friends who haven't hungout in a while and they take
a quick road trip to Chicago inthis pimped out RV that Jeremy Piven has.
(29:11):
They're going to go watch like aboxing match, and they're stuck in
traffic. They take a detour andthey're in this rundown desolate neighborhood where they
witness Dennis Leary and his thugs murdersomeguy. So the whole movie is them
running on foot because their RV explodes. They're running on foot from Dennis Leary
and fucking Z from Pulp Fiction anda few other guys. Very night game,
(29:37):
kind of early nineties thriller feel, has a good atmosphere. I think
the camera work is really great.Has kind of like that blue lighting from
time to time, definitely of itstime, but for this, Yeah,
the tension it stayed strong once it'slike once the execution takes place, like
when they see this guy get murdered, it's kind of NonStop and you don't
know where it's going and that kindof surprised me. Some of the of
(30:00):
guys die, some of them getaway. There's a little bit of backstabbing
going on. Yeah, this thinghad a budget though too. The sets
were amazing, But it's all aboutthe soundtrack. So this was when it's
kind of some crazy idea where theyteam up quote rock bands with rappers and
stuff. So the soundtrack it's likeday Lass so Day La Soul with like
(30:21):
Teenage fan Club and Dinosaur Junior LivingColor Run, dmc slayer and Iced T,
Mud Honey and Sir mix a lot. Was that a thing that happened?
Yeah, yeah, I remember itwas a record store day vinyl release
like I feel like before Pandemic, but Sonic Youth with Cypress Hill, Cypress
Hill with Pearl Jam, Faith NoMoore Helmet and House of Pain. The
(30:44):
Faith No Moore song was kind ofgood. With House of Pain. Okay,
a lot of it just doesn't work, but it's it's cool to listen
to because it's of its time. It's so nineteen ninety three. Yeah.
I think Alvin Silvestrie did the originalscore, which was fine, but it
was all about that soundtrack. Butyeah, I thought it was a great
little three I think I gave itthree and a half stars. Nice glad.
I I'm actually I have another StephenHopkins directed movie on my list,
(31:07):
which we'll get to you later. But we are going to Paul Nashy now
for Day six Doctor Jekyl Versus theWerewolf from nineteen seventy two. I had
never seen this one. I wasabout to for the Butterfly for each Corpse
episode because it's directed by Leon Dragonfly. Dragonfly for each Corpse directed by Leon
(31:27):
Klamowski, written by and starring PaulNashy in multiple roles. Of course,
he's the Valdemir wolf Man, Valdemore. How do you say it, Valdemore,
Valdemar. Yeah, it's Veninski andhe plays the mister Hyde. But
it's about this marry couple who travelfrom England to Transylvania to visit the graves
(31:48):
of the husband's dead parents and therethe husband is murdered by some carjackers and
nash pops up and saves the wife, given her a place to stay in
the asshole. The whole town knowshe's this werewolf, he's this monster,
so they head to his place tokill him, and they kind of both
run off and leave to London, where the wife tells her close friend,
(32:12):
doctor Henry Jekyl that Valdemar and Valdemarneeds needs help to you know, hopefully
defeat this curse and Jekyl Doctor Jekylsays, oh, I got my grandfather's
formula, which I think will work. He thinks that if he turns Paul
Nashy's character Valdemar into Hide, thatHide will fight off the transformation of the
(32:36):
werewolf, okay, and that personawill be strong enough to cure him.
Yeah, and you know, obviouslyyou'll have to watch it to find out
if you haven't already seen it.But it's fine. I think naw.
She looks great as the Hide whenhe turns into Hide, kind of like
a Danny DeVito from The Penguin orDanny DeVito as a Penguin from Batman Returns.
But it has an amazing score fromAnton Garcia Abril, who did all
(32:59):
the music for the Blind Dead filmsand a lot of other Klemowski films.
But yeah, I'm glad I checkedthis one off. I thought it was
fine, like the Nashy movies forme? Is they sound better in summaries
and synopsis? Is the execution?Yeah, like so many ideas, I'm
like Jesus, this is genius, but you just can't really pull it off.
Yeah, but it's still fun.I think I gave it three stars.
(33:22):
They're always fun, I think theyare. And he's such a burly
man, he is, he's theblushy he does so. I was supposed
to watch The Beast Carnival. Johnsaid he had this one downloaded, and
even Jake even offered to borrow theBlu Ray and I was like, no,
no, John's got it downloaded. And every day I'd be like,
(33:45):
not every day, but like atleast five times last month, I was
like John, The Beast Carnival,We've ben to watch it because he wanted
to watch it too, and likehis schedule just change anyway, I'm rambling.
We did not watch The Beast Carnivalbecause John forgot to find it for
me, or he couldn't find it. He had a download, he didn't
remember which flash drive or hard drivehe had it on anyway, so I
(34:07):
switched it on the very last dayof the month. This was the last
one of the last movies I watchedfor Timsploitation. You're holding out. I
was holding out. I was waiting. Was like, John, are we
gonna fucking watch this movie? Ornot? Like that? Sort? Fine?
So uh where Wolf in the YettiA nineteen seventy five good old too.
(34:30):
B had plenty of Nashi movies forme to pick from. I saw
that you'd seen this one too.Yeah. It was basically Nashi goes squatch
hunting in Katman Do and don't atme and say, like Jetties are different
than squatches the same fucking thing.Yeah, Nashi again is playing Voldemar Doninski.
He goes off to find a pathwith one other person. He ends
(34:52):
up alone in some cave on afull moon where there's some like demon vampire
woman who turns him into a werewolf. It's mostly about the you know,
exploring group that Nashi came with inthe cave demon women, because there's pictures
of the Yeti and they're like,Oh, we're going to go and we'll
find the Yeti or whatever. AndI'm like, are we going to get
(35:14):
to the Yeti at any point? And you finally do in like the last
five minutes, you get what thisis what I was waiting for. I
was like, he's got to bea wolf and he's going to fight the
Yeti? When am I going toget that? And they finally do and
it's like a hugging match, andI mean it's so it's really lacking in
the yettiness in a movie with Yetiand the title. But I remember when
(35:37):
I watched it, I completely forgotthat the Yeti was even a part of
the movie. And he pops upand I'm like, oh shit, already
kind of checked out. Yeah,I was too. I think you gave
it two and a half. Igave it the same. I mean,
it's you know, it's fine. But at the same time, I was
like, don't name your movie We'rewolf in the YETI if ninety eight percent
of your movie does not have ayetdi in it, please and thank you.
(36:00):
Yeah, it looks like it alsogoes by Night of the Howling Night
of the Howling Beast. But yeah, that's the title on letterbox. But
yeah, it was the Eddie one. Yeah, but anyway, it was
Nashy Nash. She's always fun.So moving on to the next category,
which is buddy cops. This isanother one of my favorites from the month.
(36:21):
Wow Hickey and Box from nineteen seventytwo. In a CD rundown office
in Los Angeles, a pair ofbusinessmen discuss the opposition. I know these
guys better than I know. Youpull a gun, you gotta be ready
to kill somebody. But what elsewe got to do? Bill Cosby is
(36:43):
Hickey and Robert Kulp is Box.Hickey and Box a pair of played out
private eyes would have to reach upto touch bottom. They're not cool slick
heroes. They're worn tough men,and that's what makes them so dangerous.
When they come up against professionals. They hold their forty four magnums boat hands
and keep shooting until they get somethinganything. Hicky and Bogs Pritty PG Cosby
(37:07):
Help Hickey and Bogs. They'll knockyou out of your seat. This was
on to be directed by Robert Colp, written by Walter Hill, and stars
Robert Colp and Bill Cosby as Hickeyand Bogs. They are sort of retired
private detective partners. They get hiredto track down a woman, but they
(37:31):
get entangled with some criminals searching forthe same woman who's connected to a heist
and the theft of the money fromthe criminals. What's great about them is
that they're not good cops, likeas as people. I mean not as
in like they're good at their jobs, like they know like what they're doing,
but they're not good people. Ithink it's also really progressive for its
(37:53):
time because Colpe's character is gay,and then you have Bill Cosby in the
role as well. And I know, well I know Bill Cosby, I
know what's going on with that now, but this is nineteen seventy two.
I can talk about him in thatcontext. So it's extremely bleak. It
has this very cynical energy throughout it. The kills are really brutal and hard
(38:13):
hitting. Yeah, it's just thisone. This one fucking hits hard and
it's a fucking banger. It's funny, Is it funny or not? No?
Really, Okay, this is nocomedy in this This is not like
funny Bill Cosby. This one islike, this one's dark, Like I
mean they have jokes with each other. I mean, not funny Bill Cosby's
(38:34):
scary, that's true. Yeah, but no, it's just like the tone
is like really not what you wouldexpect. And I know, like that
doesn't really fit with like the buddycop category, but I mean that's what
they were, and yeah, I'mcounting it. So totally. Highly highly
recommend this one. Another one, another one of my favorites from the month.
The watch list going on. Geez, add somebody in my watch list
(38:59):
here. It's all front loaded.Don't worry, it's all down here.
Mine's all over the place, includingmy buddy cop pick. I went with
crime Busters nineteen seventy seven, directedby Enzo Barboni. I thought it was
going to be a banger. Itstars, you know, it's a Bud
Spencer Terence Hill gym. It lookedfun, it does. I mean,
(39:20):
so they're these out of work docworkers who randomly meet each other one day
and then they have this conversation. They decide to go ahead and rob what
they think is a convenience store location. It's kind of like a shopping mall
strip area, but they accidentally entera police station recruitment office and sign up
and become police officers. So theygo through basic training, you know,
(39:43):
the whole Shenanigan's falling asleep in classreading comic books. But they ultimately they
need cops, you know, verypolice academy kind of, and they become
cops. They pass training boot camp, they immediately destroy all the cop cars
when they you know, they're onthe road, they're on patrol, and
they try to solve this murder casethat they've given in this very bumbling way.
(40:07):
Then they try to start being purposefullykicked off of the force, but
the commissioner sees everything they do islike amazing work and like these tactics that
he's never seen, and I meanit's pretty funny. It's definitely you know,
like Trinity or anything like that. The premise is better than the actual
execution. It gets kind of taxing. I mean it spends the first fifteen
(40:30):
minutes just kind of recycling the samejoke over and over again, like when
the characters are first introduced, andit does that quite a bit on other
jokes and scenes. And it's along run time too, It's almost two
hours long. All the Spencer Hillcomedies are very slapstick, but this one
is like full on cartoon mode, which works for you know, like people
in letterbox sing to some of thepeople I follow really love this. To
(40:54):
me, it just got a littlebit annoying. Okay, And it could
be completely based on the movie you'reinto, sure, but yeah, two
hours of feeling this, I waslike, yeah, so it's it's It
almost had the same kind of slapstickslapstick comedy and characters is like like I
said, Police Academy, which cansometimes get annoying, or like Doctor Peckle
(41:15):
and Mister Ye. It just didn'tland for me. But Laura Gesmer does
show up about an hour in okay, and she plays Susie Lee from Hong
Kong, and Terence Hill understandably fallsfor her, and she plays the niece
of the guy who's murdered in thecase that they're covering, so Terence Hill
really wants to kind of solve thecase. But it does have a super
(41:37):
catchy theme. This this continuous originalscore, this melody that's it sounds like
something from a cartoon. It's kindof catchy. And as soon as it
started, like in the very beginning, I was like, oh yeah,
I'm like already humming it. Butit plays literally like fifty times throughout the
movie. That seems to be arunning thing because that same thing happened when
(41:59):
last year when I watched Watch OutWe're Mad with the like the song,
and I was like, oh,this is great, and then like the
tenth time, I was like, kill me, that's what And it's the
great I mean, I love it'sit's uh what is Maurzio and Guido Deangels
who They've done so many great scores, like some of them were I favorite,
like Torso and readers of plantanis Torso. Thank you Torso. But yeah,
(42:23):
this one just didn't land for me. I think I gave it two
and a half. I don't thinki'd watch it again. There's so many
other Bud Spencer Terrence Hill movies Ihaven't watched, so I'll get to those
before you've given this actually be acategory next year. Yeah, Patrick,
that's a good one. Okay,Day eight Kaiju. Yes, I went
(42:45):
with Atragon. So how do yousay it a trigone either one? I
watched this too for something else,But then it's all like I think in
there, don't they call them likea tarragon or something? They say it
completely different in the movie, butit's from nineteen sixty three. Yeah,
what did you watch it? AipYeah, Day twenty one aip ishiil Honda
(43:06):
and it was okay. I thinkwe both gave it to and a half
to. Yeah, it's okay. The reporter dubbing is absurd. Yeah,
the sub implodes and honestly it's onlya good thing if there's billionaires on board,
Like you know, I don't wantto see those guys. That is
(43:27):
that that That was one of thebest scenes in this thing, when the
pressure from the subreen. Yeah. The miniatures are great in this, mainly
like ships and yeah, the verythe very end with the dragon, I
was like, Okay, this iswhat I'm here for. This is great.
Yeah, it's so goofy though. It's like a eel horse looking thing,
and it doesn't even really put upa fight. It's very weak.
(43:49):
I mean, it looks like aChinese dragon that's kind of like floating through
the sky kind of thing. AndMonda was his name, I think,
yeah, or its name, butyeah, it didn't. I thought that
the open, the cold open wasgreat. It's where those guys are filming
that that woman at the little likethe dock and this, you know,
the guy comes out of the waterand you don't know if it's are they
(44:09):
filming this is this part of thephoto shoot and then like a car just
drives off into the water. There'sa lot going on. I'm like,
this is fucking great. And thenafter that it becomes some weird like there's
father daughter reunion like underwater thing.Yeah. The Moo Empire, Moo Empires
taking We're doing a great job explainingthis movie. It's an old World War
(44:32):
two admiral working on submarines and theMoo Empire, who apparently ruled planet Earth
like ten thousand years ago. They'reliving under the Pacific Ocean and they want
to come back up to rule Earth. Right, but like the admiral is
taking care of an old submarine captain'sdaughter who everybody thought the father died in
(44:54):
World War Two, and he endsup working with the Moore. It's all.
It became convolution, is it?Very much? So? Yeah,
the dubbing probably didn't help either,And yeah it was fine. Yeah two
and a half. Yeah that's whatI gave it. So what was your
Kaiju? My Kaiju was Gorgo fromnineteen sixty one. This has a blu
(45:16):
ray release from Vinegar Syndrome. Ithink this was Adams's pick two for Kaiju.
This is basically a British slash IrishGodzilla. Some fishermen capture Gorgo like
Gorgon, that was where it gotits name from, and they sell it
to a circus run by a guynamed you ready for it, Dorkin.
(45:43):
So what they don't know is thatthis is the baby Gorgo and mom is
on our way to come rescue him. Ah. I like it. It's
fine, it's cute. It's notlikely something i'll ever rewatch, but it
checks most of the Kaiju boxes.I guess you know. You can tell,
like they had one suit for babyKaiju and Mama kai or baby Gorgo
(46:07):
and Mama Gorgo, because like theway when they spoiler skip ahead if you
don't want to know the end ofGorgo, when Mama rescues him and they're
walking back to the ocean, youcan tell like the way that the screen
is that it's like they're not inthe same frame. It's like, oh,
they had one suit. That's cute. Yeah, it's it's it's cute,
(46:30):
it's it's got a bunch of extrason it that I haven't watched yet,
so and I'll check all that stuffout, but I don't know if
I'll ever rewatch the movie Dorkin Door. Every time I hear that word,
I think of a heavy metal Ithink John Candy did the voice. He's
like, I can't be walking aroundwith my door king out dorkin all right.
(46:52):
And then after that was Kung FuDay nine and I watched Dance of
the Drunken Mantis aka The Other DrunkenMaster Too. This is from nineteen seventy
nine. It's on to be It'sSimon Yen's last film before he died.
He's the Drunken Master slash Beggar Sue, but this time his student is his
(47:15):
ex wife or still current wife.It was a little unclear adopted son Foggy,
not Jackie Chan. So Jackie Chan'snot in this, but it is
still technically sort of a drunken masterfilm loses some points, but the rest
of the cast makes up for itbecause Foggy's I mean, Jackie Chan is
(47:36):
not my favorite martial artist. That'sSamuel Hung But Jackie Chan has a lot
of personality and character in those films, and this guy, he's fine.
It has lots of great fights inchoreography. Rubber Legs is a villain and
he's combined the drunken style with mantisand so it's really fun when he's got
(47:58):
like the mantis arm out, buthe's like also like doing drunken style,
so it's fun. I definitely recommendit. I had a good time with
it. Yeah, have a Ihave drunken tai Chi hey from the Saying
director as his dance of we're ontheme here. You brought your coron e
this for a reason. Yeah, this one's from nineteen eighty four. This
(48:20):
is actually donni In's first film credit. And you know, obviously all these
the drunken martial arts movie Jackie Chanwas you know it was. He was
supposed to play this part, buthe was making a film with sam O
Hung at that time. So thedirector Yun recruited Donnie In for his first
film role, and he kind oftakes off with it. I mean he's
(48:42):
an immediate star, like and watchinghim and I've seen him and other stuff,
like all the other movies SBI andall that good stuff. But this
one's about. It's a wealthy fatherwho's humiliated when these two young kids beat
up his only son. So hehires a hitman who reminded me of the
bearded guy from Raising Arizona. Thinkthat guy, like the motorcycle guy.
(49:05):
Yeah, he hires him to killthese kids who beat up his son.
So the hit man murders the fatherand one son, and the other son
is Donnian who he's off unknowingly savingthe son of the of the hit man.
So it's weird. It becomes like, you know, should I or
(49:25):
should I not be angry at him? And then later Yen meets up with
his uncle who's this funny puppeteer andhis auntie who is called There's always One
Fatty of course, and they bothteach him tai chi, which he uses
ultimately, you know, to winhis final fight against the hit man.
Obviously, you know, with kindof what you expect from these drunken titled
(49:50):
martial arts Hong Kong films, veryslapstick comedy. But this one, you
know, obviously has great choreography, great fight scenes. This one had a
little bit of emotional went for me, like and the characters they kind of
they're quickly established, you're introduced tohim really quick, but they're also happy
and joyful, you know, they'realso full of life. So when Donnienne's
(50:10):
father and his brother murdered, Ikind of felt that he's like, yeah,
I'm rooting for you, Donnie In, and he steals a show.
Like I said, it's really good. It's just a good time. I
think it's totally worth the watch. The English jeb on two b's a little
you know, it makes it funnierthan it probably is. But also the
poster currently on letterbox, it's likea two thousand and two picture of Donnie
(50:34):
In like it has it looks nothinglike the film. This is like a
very it feels very early eighties andyou know, kind of what you expect
from these type of drunken martial artfilms. But yeah, I recommend it.
Drunken Tai Chi nineteen eighty four. Then we're going to day ten?
Is me? Is it me?Agan? Yeah? Shark'sploitation. I went
(50:55):
with Mako The Jaws of Death.I love this movie. I had never
seen it nineteen seventy six, WilliamGraffe, So he says same, I
think it's Griffe Griffe, William Griffeyand then starring Richard Jacob. Now enter
an underwater world of terror and suspenseas you face the Jaws of Death.
(51:19):
Here is the story of a mandetermined to stop the killing of sharks.
You didn't catch this shirk, sureI did alone. He dares defend man's
most dreaded enemy, destroying all whodefied his warnings. Hill can't go ahead
just kill all the sharks because theydon't understand him, not candid. They
put a body on him in amoment of danger. Deadly sharks once saved
(51:44):
his life. Now he lives andkills as one of them, my blood
brother in a mysterious shark cult. You don't have to be afraid of any
shark and do with me, sothe opening credits, I knew I was
going to love it right away becauseit's like the producers wish to think the
stuntmen and divers who risk their livesfilming the underwater scenes. So no cages
(52:05):
are used in this. But Jacobplays Sonny, a man who talks to
sharks and he can understand them. He's got a psychic connection with them,
folks, he does, he's aspiritual maybe connection. Yeah. He was
given some sort of medallion from likea tribesman that made him part of the
shark tribe. And in one scenehe tells, I forgot if he's speaking
(52:27):
to like the sharks or if he'sspeaking to that weird kind of love interest.
He says, I can't help itif I was born a man.
I love this guy. Yeah.He works with the professor who's like hanging
around and he's saying that the governmentare thinking about putting a bounty on sharks
and only he can help. Butthe Professor screws him over and Jacob starts
(52:50):
kind of killing everybody that is tryingto fuck over sharks. Yeah, has
a great opening of Jaco, wholooks like a young buff John Voyd and
this to me, he does,Yeah, but he's underwater. You know
this is like the opening scene there'ssome shark fishermen and he cuts the line
underwater. The fishermen are like, what the fuck. He slowly comes out
(53:12):
of the water onto the boat andjust slaughters them both, Like oh yeah,
I loved it. Definitely felt likekind of like a made for TV
feel with some good violence, butit was also funny. I noticed a
lot of the characters in this arealso in super fuzz which is a comedy
that Corbucci filmed in Griffa's home state, Florida, So a lot of like
the smaller role characters that popped upthey're also in super Fuzzs. But Odd
(53:37):
Job from James Bond is in it. He plays like this asshole who makes
fun of Sonny all the time, and he's trying to hunt sharks and rape
women. He's just with his drunkbuddy who's really gross. Spoiler Sonny kills
him and hangs them up like deadsharks. Like it's a great movie.
I enjoyed this one a lot. It's fun. It's no you know,
(53:58):
plastic bag jellyfish, but you knowit's it isn't. I mean, it's
but yeah, I could watch WilliamGriffe yeah, I like his stuff me
too. So initially I really wantedto watch the new Shark movie that's on
Netflix, the Under Paris one.But the one night I made it to
(54:19):
my friend's house who has Netflix, like it, just I couldn't like sneak
that in and be like, hey, so was it cool if I watched
this Shark movie on Netflix? LikeI know, I came over to like
have dinner and like touch up andstuff, so I couldn't quite work that
in. So I ended up watchingsomething that's probably much more fitting for this
month because it was Roger Corman produced, and he actually has a speaking role
(54:43):
in the films. He plays ascientist in it. Nice. So I
watched Dino Shark from twenty ten.The best part about this movie is the
fact that Roger Corman was in it, because it was honestly just nice to
hear his voice again. I know, I can watch like any random shit
on YouTube just type Roger Corman andlisten to it, but you know,
(55:04):
watching a movie having him pop up, I didn't know he was in it.
I just knew like he had producedit. But you know, overall,
movie, honks, it's Iceberg's melt. It really they this is twenty
ten CGI too, so it releasesthese tadpoles, these cg tadpoles that turn
(55:27):
into giant dino sharks that eat people, and budget Matthew Lillard has to kill
it. I will say that becauseit's twenty ten, there is a mix
of CGI in practical effects, althoughthe latter is very, very limited.
But I am convinced that they usethe dinosaur head from Carnosaur for this,
(55:49):
which I wouldn't be surprised. Ohyeah, but like if you look at
it, when there's like a surfaceshot of the shark chomping down on someone,
it looks like Carnosaur. What wassome days? Yeah, my new
Horizon pick actually is a Corman productionthat I'm gonna talk about, and they
they were used the set from Carnosaur. Oh okay, so yeah, see,
I'm I'm pretty convinced it was theCarnisaur head for the shark. And
(56:13):
that's why, like he was like, oh, dino shark, I could
use the Carnosaur head in that. That's that's a good Roger Corman I tried.
Anyway, Dinoshark's not very good. But if you want to see Roger
Corman and the Carnosaur Head. He'sin it nice, it's on TV.
Uh. Then we got Italian horror. This is another blind spot for me
(56:37):
from this director, a Dario Argentofilm. Oh I watched Do you Like
Hitchcock? From two thousand and five. I have a DVD in this like
steel book pack that has like fiveof his movies. One of them's card
Player, one of them's this one. I think Tannabray's on there randomly and
(56:57):
something else. So I've finally seenyou like Hitchcock and you know later Argento
strikes again. This one centers arounda college student who frequents a video store,
and you guessed it, he likesHitchcock. So of course it's a
murder. You know, it's amurder mystery. It incorporates elements or nods
(57:19):
to a lot of Hitchcock films. You'll see strangers on the train, Marnie
dial m for murder, rare window, tons of stuff. So if you
like Hitchcock, I do have neverseen it, it would probably you'd probably
be more forgiving than I was toit, because I'm just like stuck on
this is not you know, Ican't. I just can't latch onto later
(57:45):
Argento, I have to try totreat it like it's something different than his
earlier stuff, but I just Ican't get on board with it. And
I will say this, it isbetter than Dracula three d oh. I
think I gave that one two anda half stars, so you would probably
give this one three. Oh.There's one one moment and that was really
(58:05):
funny. So they're in it's ascene in the video store and John watched
this with me and he said thiswas the least believable thing that he'd ever
seen in a film. There's twomodel pretty women arguing over who could rent
strangers on a train, and Iwas like, that's big. Yeah,
that's that true. There could bethere. They're very well could be,
(58:27):
but I think just in a movie, not at that time. Not.
Yeah. There's there's this like scooterescape scene that's supposed to be tension filled,
but it's just hilariously bad because hekeeps falling off of his scooter and
so it's like trying to do thesame I don't know if it's trying to
do the same joke again, andit's like, just get up and fucking
go. This isn't funny anyway. The it's it's hard because so you know,
(58:53):
like in Deep Red, and youknow, you have like a strong
female lead and then a male leadwho's he's not a whimp, but he's
definitely like he can get shit doneand figure stuff out. But he's not
like this strong male take charge typelead, right. This guy is just
a straight up fucking wimp where you'rejust like, how are you even like
(59:16):
solving anything? You're just like,he's you just I can't root for him.
So I think that's a big problemtoo, is like you can't really
latch onto the protagonist either. Andhe likes Hitchcock, Yes, so he
should have some sort of like knowledgeof twists and turns. Should yeah,
I mean he's figuring stuff out,but like as a like, his personality
(59:39):
is so unlikable that it's like I'mlike, yeah, fine, you're figuring
it out eventually, but you're alsopeeping Tom and it's kind of gross.
So you know, wow, that'sfrom your window. Yeah, so that's
why, like I get it,I know, but we're Window's my favorite
movie. I know it is.I've seen everybody that's listening sleep I like
(01:00:06):
I said, it's still better thanDracula three D. I think card Player,
I might like a little bit morethan card Player. You can rent
my or not. You can smallyou can borrow my steel book if you
want. That's got both of thosein it. If you would like to
sell those Argento blanks yourself, Yeah, I need to at some point.
(01:00:30):
Maybe not, maybe not now?Yeah, what about you? For Italian
horror, this was a blind spotBaba Yaga, Baby Yaga. Yeah,
the Witch, directed by Carado Farina. This I had never seen this.
It had been in my watch listfor many, many a year. Yeah.
Based on a comic series from theItalian artist Guido Craypa which it's pretty
(01:00:52):
much about a young, beautiful photographerwho meets and falls under the spell of
a witch played by Carl Baker.I thought it was just fine. Yeah,
I don't love it. I likeit a lot. George Eisman being
in it's a huge thing. Hewas my favorite. Yeah, he's kind
of the you know, the boyfriendthat doesn't believe the photographer at first.
(01:01:14):
Yeah. His scenes were my favorite, especially when they make it into the
house together. But yeah, somelike I felt like the lead what his
name Isabelle da dun I don't know. In the Valentina role, she was
pretty lifeless. To me. Ididn't find her interesting in at all.
Yeah, I think if you're goingto go opposite Carol Baker, you gotta
(01:01:34):
you gotta bring some energy. WellCarol, Carol Broker. Carol Baker looks
great as always, but she's justnot in it very much either, and
that kind of turned me off aswell. It's mainly this Valentina character.
But yeah, I mean it's artsy. I think it's really great. It's
kind of this artsy euro trash ifyou will. But a lot of the
scenes I thought were super unique, you know, learning that it was based
(01:01:57):
I didn't know it was based onan old black and white comic book.
And there's like there's this this sexscene that shot, and it's made it
look like panels, like it's justkind of frozen shots, right. Yeah.
And there's also another shot I thinkwhere I think she's or somebody's I
think she's photographer. She's photographing fashionmodels. But the sex scene was really
weird, Like it was cool.I like like it looked like drawn panels,
(01:02:19):
like almost like storyboards come to life. And I really like that.
I thought the music held my attentionmore than most of the performances too.
I was like sold on what Iwas listening to a nett. That creepy
doll that comes to life was cool. That's very good. Yes, more
of that. Yes, they didhave a good dark room scene. I
appreciate that very much, But Ithought the end was just kind of just.
(01:02:43):
I also read that the producers butcheredthe director's vision, scrapping a ton
of his footage and editing it whilehe was away on vacation. He tried
to come back to salvage it,but they had like totally destroyed most of
the footage. Yeah, so itwasn't what he wanted. But in the
end, it kind of reminded meof Questi's death Laid an Egg and how
was edited and put together in kindof like an artsy way where I didn't
(01:03:05):
feel a whole lot for the characters, but cared more about kind of the
presentation of it. Yeah, itfeels like a two and a half star
movie with three and a half starvisuals, is what my note said.
I think I gave it three starsright down the middle. Okay, okay,
Day twelve, New World, Iwent with Torment nineteen eighty six.
Everybody go listen to that episode.Amazing performances, one hundred percent worth the
(01:03:29):
time. So yeah, both watchTorment. Love it. Listen to the
episode. Check out the New WorldPictures podcast. They have an interview with
the editors. It's a good complimentaryfeature to our episode. It is all
right. Then the next day isOds Floitation. This was my biggest letdown
(01:03:50):
of the month because it's got SamElliott in it, and I was like,
fuck yeah, Sam Elliott in theoutback, going around just being a
cool motherfucker. This is going tobe great. It's okay. So The
Blue Lightning nineteen eighty six. Iwatched this on YouTube. The Blue Lightning
is the name of an opal. There's some like opal mining going on down
(01:04:12):
under. Sam Elliott's hired to godown to get this big Opal that this
other guy was supposed to that hepaid for, but the other guy didn't
send it to him, the otherguy being Robert Colp. There we go,
my guy. This episode, jenisno no penis, but he opens
uh doing his best Irish accent andkilling a guy who he's strung up on
(01:04:34):
a tree like he was originally justgoing to leave him out there to die
and the other guy's like that's fuckedup, and he's like okay, and
the other guy's like going to golet him down, and Robert Colt just
shoots him. So we know he'sthat guy. Probably not better than his
penis, but it sounds good.Yeah yeah yeah. So then we go
that that all happens in Australia. Then we go to San Francisco where Sam
(01:04:55):
lives on a boat, and we'reintroduced to his character because he's playing the
saxophone on a boat and he needsto pour some Devil's honey on that thing
and play me as solo. Ohyou know what I mean right away,
I'm getting romance in the stone vibesgoing on here living on a boat after
a blue lightning yeah rock, yeah, yeah, yeah, I guess.
(01:05:18):
So this is what eighty six Sookay, maybe it's that that makes sense
goes to us. So he getshired to go down to Australia. He
goes, there's this plane chase. There's a bunch of one liners from him
that aren't very good, but youknow, I'll listen to him say anything.
I don't care. There's this oneso Opal Ridge is the name of
(01:05:44):
the town where like the mining themine shaft is or the mining company is
based out of. And it's thisone street town, right, so kind
of like a Western, you know, dirt road and you just got this
side of the road. And thisside of the road has got a few
stores of all the types of storesthat they would have there. I know
it's nineteen eighty six, but theyhave a video store there an opal Ridge
(01:06:05):
somewhere somewhere Australia respect So I'm like, are we gonna have a scene in
there? No, no scene inthe video store. Unfortunately, it's a
dirt road. Yeah, that's funny. So about forty or fifty minutes in,
Elliott's character gets shot and a moviejust hits a wall. Like he
doesn't die, but he is recoupingand he's like figuring out his next move,
(01:06:30):
and like that whole time where he'sdoing that is just like just drags.
Yeah, So that middle part justdidn't really help it. The ending
is a little unsatisfying. I guessthere's supposed to be a sort of romance
with this woman, but she's actuallymarried, so it's kind of weird and
I don't know, it's it's veryaverage and forgettable, which is unfortunate.
(01:06:54):
But you know, I do havea new folder in my fantasy file cabinet
with Sam Elliott and his saxophone. So I got that. You know that
should be on the poster and playinga saxophone. Hell yeah, it should
just that. Yeah, what aboutyou for exploitation. Okay, So this
is my other Stephen Hopkins who didJudgment Night, who directed it. This
(01:07:16):
is called Dangerous Game from nineteen eightyeight. I was actually planning to pick
this for an episode. I wentwith Torment. Oh okay, but I
wanted to watch this. I'd readgood things about it. I kind of
skipped over it, but it's fun. The letterbox summary is great, which
I'm gonna read and kind of paraphrasea little bit. An insane cop named
Murphy hunts down five students in ashopping mall after closing time. His life
(01:07:40):
is ruined as he was dishonorably dischargedfrom the police force because of these kids.
Armed with a rambo knife and acrossbow, he initially only wants to
scare them off, but when heaccidentally kills one of the boys, there
is no turning back. The witnessesto the murder must be eliminated, so
begins a relentless hunt through the mallat night. Oh, this could still
(01:08:00):
be an episode. That's what fivehundred view not, no, four hundred
views. Yeah, it's a greatpremise overall. I thought it could have
been handled a little bit better. There's a lot of patting if you cut
down some of the padding. Itspends a lot of time on the build
up of establishing the kids relationships andlike, you know, how they're friends
(01:08:21):
and what they should be doing andyou should be going to college and all
sorts of stuff like that. Alittle long winded, but you know,
once they settle under the mall andthen Murphy the fucking crazy cop Pop has
his scenes, It's like, yeah, this would be fun to cover.
He's the star. His scenes areof him losing his mind are so entertaining.
(01:08:45):
There's a there's a rambo montage scenepretty much in the mall where he's
kind of gearing up, putting inhis you know, he's sliding the knife
in a place, you know, double tying his combat boots. You can
just kind of smell the boner onthis cop as he's hunting these helpless teenagers.
Yeah, and people. That's Mattlike, he gave it three and
a half and he was his reviewmentions that there's some Christmas trees in other
(01:09:11):
directs, so it's a Christmas movie, and so I'm automatically thinking of dial
Code Santa Claus is a double featurefor it. Okay, Yeah, even
though it's like a totally different premise, he said, Rambo and Christmas and
others, that's where my brain automaticallywent. Yeah, because they're picking up
weapons throughout the mall and stuff.Yeah, it's not really Christmas isn't really
hinted, but yeah, throughout thethe mall there are set up okay,
(01:09:33):
decorations. And there is this onescene where Murphy the Crazy Cops alone in
his apartment after he just was firedfrom the forest because of these kids.
He ended up like chasing the kidspulled him over and he wanted to like
kind of destroy them, and allthese cops show up and they're like,
what the hell are you doing? So he loses his mind. He's in
his apartment alone and he's like, there's a roach on the wall, so
(01:09:56):
he squashes it with his hand.He just like looks at it, and
then the camera kind of pans overand you're looking at like on his wall
there's a picture of Jesus, andthen it kind of pans down, and
then there's this this magazine of Soldiersof Fortune, which is like a gun
magazine, and it just kind ofsets up to me all these like religious
elements like that. It feels likethis guy, this is a precursor,
(01:10:18):
like for this guy to start losinghis mind. This is a crazy person
here, and he does. Andthere is one review. I don't know
if he saw it on letterbox, but it just simply says good a cab,
like a cab, but it's alstrandperfect. Whoever you are, I
didn't write your name down, Butyeah, dangerous game is a lot of
(01:10:39):
fun. I think more people probablyenjoyed it more than I did. But
but yeah, I'd give it anothergive it another shot. It's me again
each Okay, beach they watch Panicat Malibu Piirre nineteen eighty nine. I
know I had Revenge of the Nerdstoo, Yeah, because I made the
promo trailer like very and it's perfect. It's a perfect intro too. By
(01:11:01):
the way, we're bad. Youknow who does the best? Robert Carrodine
laugh when that John really, yeah, get him in here. He doesn't
work. Yeah, I was gonnawatch that. I mean, as soon
as I put it on, Iwas like, what am I doing?
I've seen this before, Like II wanted all first time watches for some
(01:11:25):
reason, I didn't think I hadseen it. But yeah, I mean
it all fled, just flooded rightback, and I kept watching it,
but I went with Baywatch Panic atMalibu, Pierre, And let me tell
you something, I am very gladI did. This is directed by Richard
Compton, who did make in CountyLine. So is this a movie or
is this like the pilot movie? It's a pilot. Yeah, I read
about it. Apparently it's the veryfirst bay Watch anything. It's kind of
(01:11:48):
the pay pilot episode. But itruns over ninety minutes and there's nudity in
this. Oh so I don't knowif that was added to Maybe maybe they
had extra scenes. If it failed, they would have released it as a
movie. Well maybe it ran thatway in Europe because you know, yes
and Hasselhoff and this is uh wait, does he does he show his wang?
(01:12:11):
He does, No, he doesn't. Why did you rude? You?
Guys should have seen her man,she was like so happy for a
second. Yeah, I've never seenwhen like, no, there's just boobs.
There's there's like fashion photo shoots onthe beach, and there's like dudes
like up in condos and they havebinoculars. It's real tacky and they're like
(01:12:31):
looking at Oh wait something that Baywatched with Taki believe it. Yeah,
so this is machen Amic. Isthat you say her name machen Amic?
You should know. Yeah, it'sMachen Machen from She's Shelley Johnson from Twin
Peaks. This is her first quotemovie. It's a TV movie, but
this is her first film role.Okay, she was actually filming this because
(01:12:55):
this is eighty nine while she wasalso filming Twin Peaks. So she looks
great, Shelley Johnson. But sheplays like this badass, kind of punk
teenager who smokes cigarettes on the beachwhile wearing like baggy long sleeve clothes and
just not giving a shit. Realtough listening to her walkman, But she's
uh, she's key in cars andshit. And she has this huge fucking
(01:13:16):
fanny pack that's hilarious. It's thebiggest fanny pack you will ever see in
your life. Her mom is VeronicaCartwright, which I don't think she was
credited, but that's Lambert from Alien. Yeah. She has a scene or
two. Anyways, Uh becomes obsessedwith this married lifeguard who saves her she
falls off a pier or something andhe rescues her and she finds out he's
(01:13:38):
married, so she starts fucking withhis wife, trying to kill her and
stuff. Let's just say that fannypack is big enough to hold a big
ass rambo night, Okay, Andthat's kind of the main plot here.
You know, I've never I've neverwatched an episode of Baywatch before ever,
really never watched him. I mean, I you knows, as a kid,
i'd see you know, the commercialsand stuf. This pre dates Pamila
(01:14:00):
Anderson. She wasn't on the show. The Hoffs in there. With the
title, I thought there'd be like, you know, panic at Malibu piir.
I thought, like shark attack ormaybe some sort of crazy tsunami or
flooding or something. Not just somelike weird love triangle that seemed to be
the main plot. And when itstarted, it was just kind of like
(01:14:20):
an episode. You know, it'speople like getting can the rip tide.
It's a bunch of lifeguards fighting witheach other and hassel Hoff. There's just
a bunch of like little small thingshappening. But then the panic happens at
the end, which is this fishingboat explodes in Hasselhoff's thirteen year old son
and Richard Jacol are on the boat. Oh wait, his son's Hoby,
(01:14:42):
right, Hoby? Yeah, youremember that. I used to watch Baywatch.
Holy shit. Yeah. As soonas he said like, hey,
Hoby, come here, I'm like, wait, what do you say?
His son seems Hoby. It's terrible. His son seems dorkin' fuck. But
yeah, Richard Jacob plays like thisaging lifeguard and spoiler alert, he dies
at the end. His character's nameis al on this But I went when
(01:15:06):
I was like looking at IMDb,you know, probably for Mako. I
saw that his last acting gig wasa recurring character on Baywatch for two for
twenty eight episodes from nineteen ninety twoto nineteen ninety four. So he must
have been some other new character thatpopped up, probably I remember. Yeah.
So he has his thirteen year oldson named Hoby. His ex wife
(01:15:29):
takes him for the summer while Hasseloffbecomes lieutenant on beach patrol and he has
to like kind of dress as acop and he hates it because quote,
I hate whearing sucks. It's goodstuff. And then like there's this new
group of lifeguards coming in and hehas to kind of like wrangle him.
It's it's just terrible. But Ihad so much fun with it, Like
(01:15:51):
I wanted it to be like fourhours long. It was embarrassing. Also,
the music was kind of cool forit. Arthur B. Rubinstein,
who did wargames Nic Time, BlueThunder. Terrible, But yeah, I
disliked everything has worked for me.If I watched this, probably and I've
never seen Baywatch before, I'd probablybeen like, when is this series starting?
(01:16:12):
I am fucking sold. I wantto watch Hobi, I want to
watch Mitch. I want to watchall these lifeguards. Yeah, take me
to the beach. But it wasmore dramatic than I thought. It was,
like Super Bleak. It was likeHandmaid's Tale on the beach. Surprise
the shit out of me. Butyeah, I think it was on YouTube.
I mean it's probably everywhere, butI recommend it. Panic it Malibu
(01:16:33):
Beer time for bay Watch Rewatch.Yeah, start with this rebay Watch Baby
read re rewatch bay Watch. Yeah, we got to work on that.
Yeah, rebay watch Watch. Somelistener will come up with something better and
they'll tell us in our discord.Uh So, I watched the Horror of
(01:16:56):
Party Beach from nineteen sixty four. This is on two B terror strikes from
the bottom of the scene. Aninvasion of ghoulish atomic beasts who live off
human blood. Can they be killed? I don't know, Lieutenant. An
(01:17:23):
entire city in the throes of panicand the mercy of demons from the dead.
People are dumping chemicals in the ocean, and that gets you a monster
who's going to ruin your day prettymuch. There's a few lines in this
that I just that I love, and it's basically the beginning of it is
all like beach party stuff. It'slike there's a band and they're playing songs
(01:17:45):
and everyone's dancing. There's this reallygreat song called the Zombie Stomps. That's
fantastic. I'll put it what's familiar. Try to insert some of that in
here. The zombies just find yourbaby, baby, don't be scared.
(01:18:18):
I'm staying here. Kind of weird. There's some lines like you ain't seen
nothing until you've seen Tina swing.Tina dies later the googly eyed monster kills
her. She had to be punishedbecause she was drinking, so you can't
do that when you're a teenager, folks. Then there's like these two teens
that are kissing and one of them, the girl asks like, do you
(01:18:39):
believe kissing is unhealthy? And theboy says, I don't know, I've
never been sick anyway. There's jokeslike that in this, which it's just
it's so like wholesomely stupid that it'sjust fun in that way. But there's
actually some gore in this that Ireally wasn't expecting, like the bloody bodies
(01:19:01):
watching up on the beach. There'sa high body count too. At one
point, the googly eye monster killsa bunch of girls in a cabin,
like there's like fifteen to twenty girlsin there, so it's got a super
high body count in it. There'smultiple googly eyed monsters at that point,
and so the two of the googleeyed monsters take two of the girls.
(01:19:25):
So it's almost like proto humanoids fromthe deep, like starting to get sleazy
pregnant them. They never they neveractually explicitly say that, but you know
that's what they tell me. Six. Yeah, but I really liked it.
It had more gore and it wasa little bit more like, oh,
they're going there with it kind ofthing. Like it started off,
(01:19:45):
I was like, yeah, it'sgonna be beach songs and people like dancing,
and like, oh no, soand so is missing and that's it.
And like then you see like themonster come up and like you see
the zipper and you're like, oh, you know, and you know,
I was expecting that and I gotthat, but it was also a lot
more than that. So yeah,on letterbox it's a little banner and oh
yeah, yeah, that's that looksgory. Yeah, like that's just black
(01:20:09):
and white. That's Tina. That'swhat you get for drinking, folks.
Check her out on letterbox. Isay that I'm gonna pop open another Corondupid.
This is on me. Uh yeah, free space. Okay, so
next free space. You know.I watched an Italian film called The Killers
(01:20:32):
Are Our Guests from nineteen seventy four. This is on YouTube. It's on
the White Slaves of Chinatown channel, which everyone should be subscribed to. If
you're not so we have four criminals, including one woman, and they rob
a jewelry store. One of themis shot, he's not dead, but
he's he needs a doctor. Anotherdies in a car crash. So then
(01:20:55):
the remaining three find a doctor's houseand they force the doctor to help them
while they wait for their fencing contactto show up, because they've robbed all
these diamonds and they need they needtheir contact to take them to sell them
to somebody else and they can getthe money. It's pretty forgettable up until
(01:21:15):
the end. It has some definitesleazy moments, like one of the three,
one of the two guys is veryrape but I don't know these like
home invasion movies to me or evenlike Italian that when it's doing something like
this, if you don't have likea Thomas Milan and almost human or like
David Hess and a house on theedge of the park kind of thing.
(01:21:39):
The one guy is trying to gofor that, but he's just like this
bigger guy with orange hair and hejust doesn't He looks like a dad and
he's trying to be threatening and it'sjust like it didn't work for me.
But it does not have a decenttwist at the end. I didn't see
coming. But then the movie goeson for ten minutes after the twist,
(01:22:00):
when I'm like, you could havejust ended at the twist, and I
would have liked your movie a lotmore. But I probably gave this three
stars, But yeah, I likedit. Killers Are a Guest nineteen seventy
four. It's a cool poster.Yeah, my free space, I went
with Buddies from nineteen eighty five. This is I've had this on my shelf
for years and I bought from VitigerSyndrome. Why do you want to cry
(01:22:21):
this month? I don't know.I wanted something to kind of break up
the armed responses, like I wantedsomething really good, and I knew this
had been sitting on my shelf forway too long, so I popped it
in and yeah, it was sad, but it was also kind of so.
It's the first film to address theAIDS epidemic, like, and it
(01:22:42):
was released in eighty five, soit was like in the thick of it,
like everything's going down, and it'sabout this young man, twenty five
year old David, who volunteers tobe a bedside companion of a gay man
named Robert who's in the hospital dyingof AIDS and the program that David's in
is like the Buddy program, soit's what's why it's called Buddies and David,
who's also a game and he learnsabout Robert's life and his relationships with
(01:23:04):
his lovers and his family and friendsand how they react to the disease.
And David begins to kind of evaluatehis own life with his longtime boyfriend and
kind of like his views towards gayactivism and stuff, and how the government's
handling the AIDS issue. So it'slike he's, you know, Robert is
(01:23:27):
opening up his eyes and a lotof in his young mind that he hasn't
really taken into account. And yeah, it sounds super depressing because you are
watching this man who you know ultimatelywill pass away in the movie. But
it's kind of uplifting too because Davidhas like at the end of the movie,
he's like kind of fighting the goodfight. I don't know, I
just I want to watch more ofthe director, Arthur J. Breston Jr.
(01:23:49):
I want to watch more of hisstuff. This is his first movie
that I've seen of his He passedaway from AIDS two years after Buddies was
released, as well as the actorthat played the man with AIDS in the
in the movie, he passed awayas well in nineteen eighty nine. And
it's Jeff Edholm who plays Robert, who he puts on an amazing performance,
completely captivating, heartbreaking, but atthe same time you're like sold on everything
(01:24:13):
he's doing. Like I read DakotaNuts letterbox review. Yeah, and the
review ends with so minimally staged, yet evocative and colorful, like a play
made into a film calling to actionwithout ever feeling pedantic. It just works.
It humanizes AIDS patients through Robert withhumored desire and sadness, and like
(01:24:36):
that spot on like it's you feelthat you could see the budget, but
you don't care because it is likea I don't know, it's just it's
not about like what like where thelocations or anything like that. It's about
these conversations they're having and it's justreally well written. So I do definitely
want to check out Bruston's other stuff. Highly recommend it, But yeah,
Vinegar Syndrome, there's some extras onthere too, I need to watch,
(01:24:58):
But Buddies is definitely one of myfavorites of the month. Maybe somebody reads
it and becomes more careful sexually thatknocks down a chance of getting it.
(01:25:19):
Or somebody reads it and sends moneyto one of those gay centers, or
they get angry and they write aletter to the mayor and asks why more
is being done? Now we're goingto Bruce Flotation. It's me Store Okay.
(01:25:45):
Fire on the Great Wall also knownas Ninja Over the Great Wall or
Great Wall Fighter also known as USfrom nineteen eighty seven. This is directed
by a Bruce la Is that theEli one Elie La La Lee Lae and
lay Okay Dragonly it's the young KinLung. That's Bruce lay Okay. I
(01:26:13):
don't know, yeah, but he'sin it. He stars in it,
he directed it. Also included onthe cast is Lee Ning and this was
in the credits. It would sayLeaning in parentheses the world champion of gymnastics
and then Lung Yen in parentheses thefamous volleyball player and actually says this in
(01:26:35):
the I had a movie just likethat, like at the end of the
month Bloodfist too, where they hadall these people who were like karate and
martial arts, and the credit andthey put their credits in their credit like
like their name and like parentheses.Like it was odd. I had never
seen that. I hadn't neither. That's weird that both you and I had
a movie that did that this month. But yeah, this is very This
(01:26:57):
is Japanese versus Chinese, like China'sresilience against the occupation and like all the
bloody battles. I think at theend it says something like the Chinese spirit
stands strong and erect, like theGreat Wall. But Bruce Lai plays this
peasant who escapes mass murder of hisvillage by the Japanese and he joins his
master in Beijing shortly before the oldman is assassinated by ninjas, so he
(01:27:23):
gets revenge for all of this. And it's just beautifully shot, great shots
of like foggy weather and fields. There's like this field, huge scene and
the camera kind of pans along andit's just filled with skulls and bones.
It's like Terminator too, Judgment Day. It's really great, Like this thing
had a big budget, nice productionvalue, awesome set pieces. There's really
(01:27:46):
the end fight is actually on theGreat Wall. In the end, tons
of people. I mean, it'sjust it's very impressive to watch. I
watched a bad dubbed version on two. Be made it fun again. Great
squibs, awesome decapitation. Bruce Laiedestroys about four dozen ninjas in the grassy
fields like and then in the junglethere's this great nighttime fight. He fights
(01:28:11):
like for days during like before thefinal battle, he's fighting all these ninjas
for like days. Like there's anighttime fight scene of late taken on a
ninja who's on fire, and thenit cuts to the next morning and he's
fighting ninjas in the snow. Beautifulstuff. It even has some of the
animated effects, like when he punchessomebody, it has animated ribs breaking during
(01:28:32):
the fight. It's just great fun. Yeah. I highly recommend this one.
I don't know if there is arelease of it. The one on
two looks fine, but the dubbingis a little questionable. Is it in
the Severn set? Maybe? Idon't think it was okay. I mean
that's volume one, so it couldbe on a one coming up. If
it's not. Yeah, if it'snot, I could be wrong too.
(01:28:53):
I didn't pick it up, butit's it's worth a release for sure.
Okay, so I watch one fromthe set John bought it. I watched
Enter Three Dragons from nineteen seventy eight. Assistant director Godfrey hoeh this movie is
Chaos Incarnate. John tested me afterwe were done watching, and literally ten
(01:29:14):
minutes after we finished watching it,he was like, tell me what the
movie was about Erica, and Iwas like fuck. I was like,
some guy has some diamonds stolen fromhim. But then three Dragons slash Bruce
Lee clones show up and there's alot of fighting and hilarious dubbing and some
sped up running away yackey sack comedymoments, and then someone's sister gets kidnapped.
(01:29:42):
And that's the best that I coulddo. And I cannot wait to
dive into more of this box.Did he give you an A plus?
Was he like, you hit itthe nail man? No, I gotta
b minus because I think I didas well as I could have. But
I mean, there's just I didn'tknow it. John's watched a lot more
Bruce ploitation than I have, Likehe was. He did a deep dive
(01:30:03):
on it last year before, notlast year, maybe the year before before.
He knew that the set was comingout from Severn and yeah, he'd
been doing a bunch of watches andso he I think he has a better
grasp on some of these and likeknowing who's who. He's like that's Dragonly,
No, that's Bruce Lae. Likewhich one's Bruce Lae. He's like
(01:30:25):
that one. I was like, okay, you know, so he's he's
got it down a little bit more. He knows like who the expert on
Bruce Ploitation is, who's done alot of the intros for these movies on
the set, and like, soI definitely want to dive headfirst into these
movies fairly soon. Like I couldhave done like a Bruce Ploitation month if
(01:30:45):
I could have figured out a wayto make I probably could have gotten a
few of these to fit, likeall free spaces and like gangsters and you
know, revenge and stuff. Revengefor sure, I could have got in
there. But yeah, it's anyway, It's it was nice. Uh then
full Chie on his birthday, Yeah, happy birthday, Full Chi as always
(01:31:05):
Pickens are getting slim. Yeah you'rescreaming the bottom of the bucket. Yeah
I am, But you know whatI did a full Chye Presents film this
time. I'm still not ready todip into the comedy. I don't know
if I ever will, just becauseyou know who is it chee Chy and
whatever that duo is, Like,I just I can't. I don't want
(01:31:29):
to. I only have so manyyears left to live. I don't think
I ever want to go there. But you'll get it, You'll get there.
Yeah, you're going to live.I don't think so. I did
have to download this one Hansel andGretel nineteen ninety. There are no houses
made of candy. Instead, wehave a group of criminals who are trafficking
children and selling their organs. SoDead Kid movie. We have two children,
(01:31:49):
a sister and a brother, thatare killed. At the beginning.
They come back as ghosts and killeveryone involved. Their presence is signaled by
a children's song and red light flashingaround their eyes. So like, if
you look at the poster, itlooks like there's blood dripping from their eyes.
No, they're literally someone's shining ared flashlight in their eyes in the
(01:32:12):
scenes for that. That's the effect. No blood, Well, they have
blood on the poster. I knowit's it's a red flashlight in their eyes.
Is what it is that's funny. So the weirdest thing about this movie
is the cop who is investigating thecase decides that she's just gonna stay at
the house of these people, likeall these people are getting murdered and like
(01:32:36):
around the house and like the criminalsthat she's investigating. She just shows up
with her fucking bag and she's like, yep, I'm gonna stay here,
Like that's what. And I thinkmy review is akeab so I don't know.
There are some good kills. Atractor runs over a guy, there's
a shower scalding, the one personhas an eye popping out of their head,
(01:32:59):
So like there's some good goren hereis you know, dead kids and
dumbmass fucking cop and it wraps upkind of weird and like her whole how
she believes what's happening with it isnot really believable, but I still liked
it. Probably three stars. Idon't know Hansel and Gretel for Folgy.
For me Nice, I went witha co written by Folgi, which is
(01:33:25):
Western The Man who shot Billy theKid from nineteen sixty seven, also known
as I'll Kill Him and Return Alone. I like that title better. Yeah,
I think that's well, no,that wasn't what was on two be.
I think the one on two besaid the man who shot yeah,
Billy the Kid? Okay, becauseyeah, first off, good cold opener.
Pat Garrett's riding in a town andwhen someone says to him, like,
(01:33:47):
great work for killing that bad thatbad gun, Billy the Kid,
Garrett hoops off his horse and justbeats this guy's ass. Then he walks
over to Billy the Kid's grave andthere's a sign nail too across that says
killed by his best friend, andhe grabs the sign. He breaks it
over his leg, freeze frame ofyou know, like the broken wood,
(01:34:09):
and him like looking all serious, and then a three line title pops up,
three line title card the man, next line, who shot? Next
line Billy the Kid. And there'sa gun shot and it shoots the man
off, so it just says whoshot Billy the Kid. I'm like,
okay, this is gonna be andthen of course it shoots it again.
(01:34:30):
Then it just has Billy the Kid, and I'm like, I'm into it
really sharp, certainly not. Iguess we don't know what is historically correct
retelling of the story right now,but in this one, Billy, obviously
it's this one. He wrote it, wrote it. So in this one,
Billy's a young kid. He findsa man who's attempting to rape his
(01:34:50):
mother and he kills the man withthe knife. And this is the first
man he's ever killed, and he'sworried about the law, and his mom's
like, go to Pat Garrett andget some help. So he runs to
Pat Garrett. Pat wants to help. He's, you know, he's kind
of like, Okay, it's goingto take a while. I got to
talk to the sheriff and all thisstuff. But Billy gets scared. He
runs away and he's on the runand that's when he begins this life of
(01:35:14):
pretty much stealing and killing, andhe gets more confident and like his his
tough his tough kid ways. SoGarrett starts going after him because you know,
Billy's mom is like, please helphim, get Pat. And you
know, all these kids or allthese characters are really well portrayed by these
actors. This felt very much likehave you seen Arthur Pinn's The Left Handed
(01:35:35):
Gun starring Paul Newman as Billy theKid? I don't think so so.
Paul Newman and that it's from likefifty eight and I had read too that
this is kind of pooled from alot of that that source. But yeah,
Billy the Kid goes after the menwho murdered Tunstole in that and Paul
Newman. It's okay. Actually Iprobably enjoyed this one better. I read
(01:35:55):
online as I was like, becauseI noticed that Foltchees's name wasn't in the
opening credits, and I was like, did I just watch this movie and
that has nothing to do with Fulch? So I jumped online. He did
co write he actually he did cowrite it, but the movies it's officially
credited to director Julio Bucks. Iguess that's how you say his name,
who did A Bullet for Sandoval. But there's like it's it's genesis is like
(01:36:18):
it's obscure, like a long longtime before, there had been rumors that
Buck's other Western, A Bullet forSandoval, was co directed by Fulci,
but this was strongly denied by actorGeorge Hamilton, who starred in it,
and then in a recent interview,Italian director Nick Nostro stated that Foulci had
instead worked and co directed this movie. The man who shot Billy the Kid,
(01:36:42):
so there's apparently he might have hada bigger hand than just co writing
it, which I thought was alittle bit interesting. It also co stars
wrote a say her name Dianique Zurakowskafrom Sweet Sound of Death. Oh okay,
she's in it. She's great init, beautiful does a great job,
plays Billy's kind of love interest. It's good. It loses a bit
(01:37:03):
of steam in the last thirty minuteswith kind of like a pretty mediocre ending.
I mean, you know, kindof how it ends. But I
think it's worth the watch. Ifeel like I gave it three stars.
And then we're jumping a day eighteen, just chugging along here. Gangsters.
This is one of my favorites ofthe month. A cult is my Passport.
What a fucking awesome title. Thisis from nineteen sixty seven. It's
(01:37:26):
a Japanese gangster movie directed by Takashino Mura. I had this one on
my watch list for years. It'sabout a hit man who's hired to kill
a family boss who's getting greedy andtaking over your territories that others run.
And the hit is successful, murdersthe guy and he attempts to board a
plane, you know, to leavethe country for France. The murdered bosses
(01:37:48):
men are already waiting at the airport. So the entire movie is pretty much
the hit man and his buddy onthe run from while all these gangsters are
after him. And it immediately hasan introduction just like a spaghetti western,
with like gunshots firing. It hasthis more cony sounding soundtrack, the score
complete with like whistling and acoustic guitar. Very strange for like a beautiful black
(01:38:11):
and white Japanese gangster film, butit fits so well because it is you
know, a lot of these arekind of based on westerns, but I
mean, this thing has got everythingyou want from a gangster movie. Great
car chases, murders, a lotof hiding out tough guys with little emotion.
Like I said, the cinematography,it's gorgeous black and white, and
the score is kind of like thescene Stiller. There's this unique moment where
(01:38:34):
one of the gangsters sings this slowsong on acoustic guitar and at lasts a
few minutes, it's like a threeminute song. It's a full song,
and it took me completely by surprisebecause it didn't really fit. But I
fully dug it because, like, you know, the captions, the subtitled
lyrics are kind of like breaking downthe lead. It's narrating what he's going
(01:38:55):
through, and it's like it's strangeyet perfectly timed emotional shift in the film
that really worked for me. Butthese performances are awesome. I enjoyed the
quote love interest because she's like atotal badash kicks ass in it. You
know, she's not like some WHIMPIkind of like candy that's just written into
the script or something eye candy.Yeah, but she's great in it.
No spoilers, but it has agreat final showdown and like this deserted landfill.
(01:39:20):
I saw you included it in theJune's plitation just a little bit,
yeah, a little little clip inthere. Yeah, and it's yeah,
this is This is one of myfavorite of the months. Highly recommended.
A Cold is my Passport. Iforgot where I watched it might have been
like daily motion or something or Vimeoor somewhere. It wasn't like on YouTube
that I could find. It's funny, like it took me years to remember
(01:39:45):
Joe Shashido's name. For whatever reason, it just did not stick in my
brain, and so I'd always haveto ask John. I'm like, John,
who's the Japanese guy with the cheeks? Yeah, and he's like Joe
Shashido, And I'm like, Okay, I'm going to remember it, gonna
remember it. I think I finallygot it. I mean, when he
first popped up he I thought itwas fake. I thought he was like
trying to do a Marlon brand. You know, he got cheek implants.
(01:40:09):
Oh is that yeah? Real?Yeah? Okay, I thought that was
just his face. No, No, he got cheek implants. Yeah,
it's very noticeable. Yeah, whatan odd choice. Yeah, I mean
I guess that was a that's thething you can do. Yeah, I
mean, you stand out. Youknow exactly who he is. So gangsters
for me was Dillinger from nineteen seventythree. They were called public animies.
(01:40:36):
In fact, they were public legends, and the greatest of all was John
Dillinger. A Gangster's gangster. Nobodydid it like Dillinger and directed by John
Millius from Conan the Barbarian, WarrenOates plays John Dillinger. Harry Dean Stanton
again plays Homer, who's one ofhis one of the people in his gang,
(01:41:00):
Ben Johnson as the g man,Melvin Purvis. I mean, what
can I say? It's Warren Oatesis John Dillinger. I mean it's probably
the most perfect casting ever. Yeah, I mean, he's just charming as
hell in exactly the kind of antihero you would root for. I saw
lots of reviews comparing this to somethingPeck and Pod directed, and I think
(01:41:20):
that's pretty spot on. It's youknow, it's gritty, it's nihilistic,
it's funny. It takes some jobsat like Bonnie and Clyde, which came
out earlier, and like, Ijust this was another one of my favorites
of the month, like the seventies. I love the seventies, like all
this the new Hollywood stuff, likethis is what you know, this is
what turned out to be all myfavorite stuff. I got Hicky and Bog's
(01:41:43):
Dillinger and Cisco Pike is my favoritesfor the month. It's like I think
there's you know, I just it'skind of besides Italian horror, like these
kinds of movies are really kind oflike my comfort blank my comfort food,
or like my warm blanket. ChlorisLeachman, Yes, Yeah, she's I
mean, yeah, it's a fuckingbanger, Like if anyone hasn't seen it,
(01:42:04):
it's on too be Warren Oates isjust perfection in it. Check it
out. And then my eighties horrorpick. I have another gap that I'm
filling with Wes Craven and I watchedDeadly Blessing from nineteen eighty one. I
did not realize that Deadly Blessing wasbefore Nightmare and Elm Street, and that
(01:42:26):
in that poster is Sharon Stone.I didn't know either of those things going
into this movie. That's Sharon Stone. Really, yes, do I believe
this? I mean it's an artistrendition of her, but the scene that
that's taken from is Sharon Stone.Oh she's in it. She's in it?
Then that's probably her. Yeah yeah. And there's even like a bathtub
(01:42:50):
legs spread. Something comes up betweenthe legs scene reallyness, So I'm like,
oh, Wes Craven really likes thatidea, I guess. So it's
about Martha. She lives with herhusband on a remote farm. He's an
ex Hittite and they live next tohis family who are still practicing Hittites,
(01:43:14):
and they call her the incubus. They think she used the devil charm to
lure him away from them. Thehusband dies really early on, and her
friends, including Sharon Stone, twowomen, they come to stay with her
for a bit while she's graving andyou know, figuring it out because she's
pregnant, and she's like, Okay, well, I guess I'm going to
stay here at least until spring whenthe baby comes, and they're trying to
(01:43:35):
convince her to go back home toLa. Sharon Stone spends the whole movie
in a silk nightgown or multiple silknightgowns. She brought plenty with her.
There's one scene where she's in abarn where she's wearing actual clothes, but
if she's in the house, she'sin a silk nightgown. That's what you
do. I mean, she's beautiful, so you know, it's basically like
the Hittites are like she's the incubus, and like people start dying. Michael
(01:43:59):
Berryman's in it, and he's oneof them. He dies fairly early on.
There's some like hooded figure that's killingpeople. And I figured it out
pretty early because like it's you know, process of elimination, figuring out who
it was. I was like,Okay, well it's that person, but
then there actually is. I don'twant to spoil the ending, but like,
(01:44:24):
yeat this. The ending seemed alittle bit like tacked on, where
it was like, well, weknow we were pretending it was this,
but it's actually this, but we'realso going to throw in this and I
don't know. It was pretty messystory wise, especially the ending. Yeah,
it's fine. It's got Ernest Borgninein it too, so I mean,
(01:44:45):
yeah, I always like him.He of course plays like the patriarch
of the Hits, because what elsewould Ernest Borgnine playing in a movie like
this. I'm not gonna spoil it. Maybe he is, but yeah,
I mean I'm glad I finally watchedit because it's like a Wes Craven movie
I'd never seen before. But andit's you can definitely tell there's moments in
(01:45:06):
it that are very much him,but it's it's not my favorite. On
TWOB. Yeah it's on twoby checkit out. What about you eighties?
Hoo? Okay, my eighties horrorpick is the Power from nineteen eighty four
on TOOB. We talked about thison the Tournament episode directed by Stephen Carpenter,
(01:45:30):
Jeff obro Obrow, score by ChristopherYoung, starring the Great Warren Lincoln
as Jerry. Susan Stokey is thelead who I mentioned from fred Olwen Ray's
armed response it's got that child kill. I don't think I mentioned this in
the in the Torment episode, butthe Power has that total Twin Peaks moment
where there's a crew member in thereflection of a mirror. Oh yeah,
(01:45:55):
that's how Killer Bob was cast, right. I was hoping that this would
that guy would have been the fuckingdick nos demon. But anyways, Yeah,
listen to the Tournament episode. Iliked it, Eric, I hated
it. Apparently I hate everything.Yeah, just a bommer hate everything.
(01:46:16):
Whatever. Yeah, Okay, Daytwenty blaxploitation. This I think is my
favorite of the month. Okay, trouble Man from nineteen seventy two. I
have been wanting this is the Ikeep bumping this. I feel like this
has been on my June's plitation listlike multiple years, and I keep bumping
it for something else, like moreobscure, and I'm like, yeah,
I'm just gonna need to do it. Yeah, I think I've had it
(01:46:39):
in my watch list, like itwas one of my very like bottom watch
lists, and on letterbox, I'vehad it in for years, and yeah,
so I finally popped it on andyeah, one of my favorites.
Directed by Ivan Dixon who did TheSpook Who's Sat by the Door, super
tight script, some of the bestdialogue, like and just like in a
crime thriller, Like it's some blaxploitationfilm, but it seems I got like
(01:47:03):
across one hundred and ten street vibesfrom it, which is a five star
banger for me. This so Ithink I gave four and a half stars
to trouble Man has great like crimedouble cross plots, a lot of twists
and turns. It stars Robert Hooks, who's he goes by mister T.
They call him T. I guesshe's trouble Man. But he's like this
(01:47:26):
respected all purpose ghetto fixer who getspulled in by other gangs or by others
on this gang war that he doesn'treally want anything to be involved with because
he's so kind of cool and hegets things done, and he doesn't gets
things done and he doesn't like to, you know, Ruffle Feathers. Yeah,
there's just so much double crossing goingin this that I didn't see coming,
and I think that's why I wasso surprised by it. But not
(01:47:48):
only because of the script, butbecause of the like perfect performances from everybody,
including Robert Hooks, Paul Winfield,Julius Harris. Yeah, this thing
is just kind of The music's amazing. Marvin Gay handling the score. This
is the only film he ever providedmusic for. Oh wow, Yeah,
(01:48:08):
I highly recommend this one. NiceTrouble is here. He's street smart and
steal hard. He's a heeler,a fixed wears six hundred dollar suits,
drives a ten thousand dollars car,and he carries two guns, one to
stop trouble and one to make trouble. He was born in the ghetto and
(01:48:30):
raised in the streets. He's beena man since he was a kid.
And Trouble is this man's name.So my bl expectation pick was Black Starlet
from nineteen seventy four. This ison YouTube. This is another one that's
on the White Slaves Chinatown channel. It stars Wanita Brown from Caged Heat that
(01:48:50):
we've covered and talked about before asClara slash Carla, and she moves from
the Midwest to become a star inHullo. Marilyn Monroe is referenced multiple times.
They even like have a scene whereClara stops at her star on the
Walk of Fame and like has alittle like moment, you know, and
(01:49:12):
and so no, no, nothinglike that. But it's clearly like that's
the the exploitation tale that's being toldhere, is like we're going to do
like the black person version of that. And besides wanting to brown this has
I haven't didn't write down his nameGrandpa from the Monsters. Isn't it okay?
(01:49:35):
And so I did like it.My problem with it is like it
wasn't fun. So there's what's themovie by Christopher Saint John, Oh,
Top of the Heap. Yeah,so you know how like Top of the
Heap is like you think you're goingto turn on like some really fun like
(01:49:57):
black exploitation movie where he's going tofuck up some cops or you know,
or something like that, and itturns out to be this like super heavy.
This isn't at that level, butit's not fun. It's really like,
you know, her compromising herself tomove to the top and like multiple
times, like having to get onthe producer's couch kind of thing, and
(01:50:21):
and then she just becomes a reallyugly person. And the people that want
to help her are right there, and it's like, you could just take
their help and you would be fine, and you could still be successful.
You're you know, you're a beautifulwoman. You'll succeed, and and it's
just it was a little bit ofa frustrating watch depressing look at her rising
(01:50:45):
to the top by laying down, and then it takes there's a very weak
turn around with like one minute leftin the movie. I mean, I
get it, Like everyone in Hollywoodis an asshole, and that's what this
movie is at its core trying tosay, is like everyone was there to
take advantage of her, except forlike the one person that she turned her
back on. Grandpa Monster calls everyonea slob. He runs a dry cleaning
(01:51:08):
business. He's like, they're theseslobs. Juanita looks fucking gorgeous, though
even on a shitty YouTube copy, she is stunning in this The director is
Chris Munger. He only has oneother film, Kiss of the Tarantula,
and that one's not very good,so don't recommend that one. I'd recommend
(01:51:29):
this one like loosely, but likego in with expectations that like you know,
you're not going to get a funblaxploitation film. And then aip atrogon
which we already talked about. Yes, it's on two bach Err Honda,
Lance your aip pick. I'm goingwith the Samuel k Arkhoff produced movie The
Monkey Hustle from nineteen seventy six, directed by Arthur Marx, who did Friday
(01:51:54):
Foster JD's Revenge Bucktown great blaxploitation films. Monkey Hustles stars Yafat Coto is Daddy
Fox, also has Rudy ray Moorein it, but Codo is the lead.
He's a small time gangster of sortsand he's hiring these young kids to
help him run these illegal trades. He kind of acts like as a as
(01:52:15):
a big time mentor, kind ofspouting advice and rhymes, like he kind
of wraps these Uh these great areyou gonna are you gonna do it?
No? No, no, theyweren't that they weren't that memorable. I
didn't. Uh, it's just aattack. It's a snack attack. It
did get it gave me rapin vibes, especially because of Yaffa Cody Codo would
(01:52:40):
U would rap here and there andseeing like these advice. But there was
this subplot where the whole kind ofneighborhood is trying to stop an expressway from
being built through their neighborhood, justlike in Rappin', which is very odd.
But the tone in this is reallystrange. You know, Marx is
kind of known for his like blaxplotationfilms Friday Foster, JD's Roo and Bucktown.
(01:53:00):
They're kind of kind of gritty insome in some regards, but this
is like PG rated, lighthearted, family friendly kind of hangout movie, which
it's it's fun, like I hada good time with it. It wasn't
what I was expecting. I mean, I knew Rudy ray Moore was in
it. I mean, actually theposter looks a little silly, but I
thought it was going to have likesome kind of like you know, like
(01:53:24):
kind of emotional essaging in it,but not a whole lot. Laird called
this and his letterboxed review a depoliticizedMMA all about the gags and friendships,
which I can kind of see,but MMA has I don't know, it
seems like serious through and through, like even the messages, like there's not
even like sometimes during the hangout scenes. But having said that, the characters
(01:53:48):
in this are great, there justaren't a lot of stakes in this.
O Codo does explain the monkey hustlethough, because you're kind of like,
what's the monkey hustle? And it'sone night. It's kind of like the
most serious scene in the movie. He's just over at his lover's house.
He's laid, you know, layingwith his head in her lap, and
(01:54:08):
he says when he's down, hescreams, he hollers, he scratches to
get over, he splits before helets the rest of the jungle know he's
full of it. That's the monkeyhustle. Okay, so he's basically kind
of faking his way to power inthe streets. But yeah, that was
(01:54:29):
that was my AIP. It wasokay. I think I gave that one
three stars, two thousands action.Okay, So I already mentioned Fred Williamson
is perfect for june'splitation. So Iwent with the Fred Williamson po boy production
down in Dirty from two thousand. He directs the stars in this of course
it's called a sequel to Night Vision, which already probably isn't doing itself any
(01:54:54):
favors. So you can guess thesynopsis of the movie. It's the same
as all the others. He hasa he's a cop, his partner's murdered
and he investigates. He has togo talk to his partner's widow to let
her know. She tries to fuckhim. You know, it's like it's
Fred Williamson, He's unstoppable. Sure, if Fred Williamson is a cop in
your cast, is his partner inthe movie, You're fucking dead, Like
(01:55:15):
within the first fifteen It's just theway it is. But listen to the
cast. Like these Publoy productions usuallyalways have a fun cast. This has
Bubba Smith, who's High Tower fromPolice Academy, Tony lo Bianco, Sam
Jones, David Carradine again, CharlesNapier, Andrew dive Off. Oh and
(01:55:35):
of course Gary Busey. Of coursethey all kind of have small roles for
the most part. Gary Busey playsthe crazy main villain, but he what
can't believe it or not, Buthe's not in it that much. But
yeah, it's it's just it's badlike it's it's it's just my letterbox review.
I'm just gonna read though. Williamsonis back. Is the cigar sucking
(01:55:58):
breaking all the rules, hot dogand horny knees, creaking asshole cop dakotas
Smith. With the longest run timein the Poe Boy Productions catalog, you
certainly feel the hour forty two minutesooh slowing down. It's got a great
cast of regulars that, even withthis exhausting run time, they're just not
given enough time on screen. Butthose Down and Dirty and will You Come
(01:56:21):
Back in parentheses deck original songs alonemake this worth the watch. Popo never
lets me down. This is probablya half or one star movie, but
if you're rating it by Poe Boystandards, it's like a three. Okay,
so nice for Williamson. This wasjust too long, all right?
(01:56:43):
Yeah, this is probably one ofyour favorite categories right in two thousands action.
I I don't even remember watching this. I oh, you know what.
I watched it super early in themonth to get it over with.
I did the same thing last yearwhere there was a category that I was
like, fuck this category, andI got it out of the way super
quickly. I watched The Killing Devicefrom two thousand and four. I think
(01:57:04):
this was on my watch list becauseClue Guligher's in it. I think that's
the only reason it was on yourwatch list, though. Yeah, so
I'm going to guess because yeah,Guligher. Here's what my notes woof some
government program that puts tooth implants intopeople to turn them into assassins. Charisma
(01:57:25):
vacuum for our lead guy. Repetitive, boring, poorly written, excessive adr
and one of the worst throw myhands up endings I've ever seen. Not
so bad, it's good, justfucking bad. Clue Gooliger with a mustache
is the highlight. Ah that doessound worth watching? No, dang,
(01:57:46):
Yeah, I didn't care for it. I don't recommend one star, would
not recommend. So then our nextfree space. I watched Lovely but Deadly
from nineteen eighty one, and Iwatched this on YouTube. I watched this
because I saw the poster for itand I was like, fuck, yeah,
I'm gonna get tricked again. Thisis gonna be great, And yeah
(01:58:11):
it's it's not very good. SoMarianne goes undercover at a high school after
her brother od's on drugs. Sothere's a lot of reviews that compare this
to Coffee, which is technically truebut morally wrong because this movie is only
like, I don't know, thirteenpercent is entertaining his coffee. The YouTube
(01:58:34):
copy was shit, especially the soundwhich kept going up and down. There
are some fun fight scenes in it, and the martial Arts Academy where it's
all women, has the dopest uniforms, Like, seriously, whatever martial art
are doing, karate, ju jitsu, whatever the fuck? I would take
(01:58:54):
it up just to get that outfit. Is that what's on the poster here?
The striight top and is it?Yeah, except black leggings. So
it's black leggings like a zebra esquetop and then a red belt. And
I was like, fuck yeah,I would rock that if I got's you
know, if that was the outfitfor martial arts, I would totally take
it up. It has an originaltitle song, so it checks that box
(01:59:17):
for you, and it comes onI think right after the cold open where
the brother is high as balls andhe's at the there at the beach and
he drowns in the ocean, whichyou know, I was really hoping there
would be a shark attack there, but then I realized, like, oh,
he died because he overdosed, notbecause like sharks, so it wouldn't
make sense, but I wanted thatto happen. I don't know, Marianne's
(01:59:39):
boyfriend or something is some up andcoming musician and that's somehow important to the
plot. I don't know. Idon't remember it very well. I know
that there was like this one scenewhere like all the girls from the martial
arts academy like got together and werelike this big group of girls like running
around and kicking and punching like thebad people. That was really funny.
(02:00:01):
The composer Robert Ragland did a coupleof William Gerdler movies. Oh there you
go. We got a nice tiein, there's an abby, there you
go. I don't know. Iwanted to like this a lot more,
just based on the poster, butthere just wasn't much more to like.
So unfortunately, that's it is whatit is. What about your next free
(02:00:23):
space? Okay, so this wasa quick kind of audible change for me.
I picked the Canadian text shelter filmcalled Blood Relatives from nineteen seventy eight.
Donald Wins. Yeah. So DonaldSutherland had just recently passed away.
I was visiting the in laws andI was like, I'm going to watch
something on my laptop because at thatpoint they didn't have a smart TV,
(02:00:44):
so I was like, I'm goingto watch something with Donald Sutherland. Directed
by Claude Chebrol. This is basedoff from an Ed McMain eighty seventh Precinct
novel and it stars Donald Sutherland,David Hemmings, Lisa Languis, and Laurent
Malay. That's the guy from Invitationto Travel, right, Lucian Lucien.
(02:01:08):
Okay, yeah, this was oneI was going to watch for the podcast
tonight. Okay, Yeah, that'swhy it was familiar. That's why I
could remember that Donald Sutherland was init. Oh my god, look at
me. Yeah, that was impressive. I was like, okay, but
yeah. It begins with this unsettlingscene of this seventeen year old girl who's
been murdered in an alley, andDonald Sutherland plays this Canadian cop he's on
(02:01:29):
the case. It's actually an awesomepolice procedural that just flies by like everything.
There's not much action in it,but it's edited and presented in like
this realistic manner and how the charactersreact and you know, the investigation that
that takes place. It kept meentirely fixated, which I was surprised with.
(02:01:50):
I just kind of popped it onbecause I was like, Okay,
this looks like a horror I wantto watch. I feel like watching a
horror here in my in law's guestroom. But there's also there's it's a
missing diary from the murdered seventeen yearold that holds a lot of the clues
to her life and likely what happenedverty much like Laura falm peak eat so
(02:02:11):
waiting for that Sutherland, he's lookingfor that. He once he finds it
and begins reading it. It's alittle half little past halfway the runtime.
The entries as he's reading alone atnight, like his wife's in bed,
you know, She's like, heshould come to bed, honey. He's
like, I'm just woming it andhe's reading these all night long. Everything
that he's reading is being acted outlike in flashback scenes, these interpreted flashbacks,
(02:02:33):
and it's an interesting change to thepolice procedural. That's pretty much the
entire movie that was working so wellfor me. But I really like the
difference in storytelling because there's a lotof it has certain characters telling you know,
her, the seventeen year old's cousinwas actually there when she was murdered.
She has her interpretation of the story. So you see that first,
(02:02:55):
and then you start reading what reallyhappened and you start seeing it. It
has it the main twist I kindof saw early on, but it didn't
really interfere with my enjoyment of it. I just kind of wanted to see
how it got there, and itreally surprised me how it got there.
It was just I was kind ofimpressed. Donald Pleasance plays a sexual offender
who likes little girls. Oh yousaid that way, that's my Donald Pleasant.
(02:03:18):
That was I know. But youknow, he was arrested. His
character now, Donald Pleasant, hewas arrested for sodomy of a ten year
old girl, I know, right, So he's a suspect of the murder.
And then they find out that he'salso in love with a thirteen year
old girl who he met when hewas twelve, and that's his alibi.
(02:03:41):
Like while when that girl was murderedand there's a you know, he got
suddenly goes to talk to this thirteenyear old girl. She's I don't know
what you're talking about, you know, she's denying it, and it's very
uncomfortable. Then that scenes kind ofjust donald pleasure just kind of tossed out.
Okay, wasn't a right good luckwith your love life? Like it's
just real and that's terrible. Itis like a it's like a French Canadian
(02:04:04):
type movie, and it so someof the dubbings off kilter, like the
little girls are clearly dubbed, andthey're it's like it sounds like grown ups
talk, you know when they talk. But I'm you know me, I'm
into bad, like bad dubbings.I'm into it, and it kind of
added to like this dreamlike quality ofthe whole thing. But yeah, I
enjoyed this one way more than Ithought I would, so I think it
(02:04:26):
gave it like three and a halfstars. But yeah, Sutherland, of
course it's perfect in this role.He was such an amazing actor, like
boom, nice good stuff. Stillme. So we're going to cars next
Yes Day twenty four almost there DeathCar on the Freeway nineteen seventy nine for
Night on the CBS Tuesday Night movie. They call him the Fiddler. His
(02:04:48):
targets for the women allone. He'sthe death car on the freeway. Shelley
Hack is the young newscaster who triesto stop it completely. George Hamil,
you are scared to death. Imight just make it on my own with
Peter Graves, Dinah Shore, andHey Vagoda in an explosive story of women
(02:05:09):
in jeopardy the Freeway Fiddler has killednine women and will surely killed again.
Yep, Car on the Freeway. This is a CBS Tuesday Night movie from
the late seventies directed by hol Needham, who did Smoking the Bandit and Canniball
Run, starring Shelley Hack, TheMom from the Stepfather, and a lot
(02:05:32):
of other movies. George Hamilton,Peter Graves, Abe the Gooda has a
small role in it. My letterboxreview kind of sums it up. It's
a It's a giallow on wheels.There's a black gloved killer who drives a
rape van and he pops in aneight track when barreling down the freeway after
his latest victim sick. And thereare always women drivers that are by themselves
(02:05:54):
in their car. I call thisthe Fiddler's Fury Road because the press gets
a hold of it. The reportersdo and through like you know, eyewitnesses
and stuff, they say they alwayshear crazy music coming from the van,
and that eight track is like afucking distortion, like crazy bluegrass fiddle,
(02:06:15):
oh okay, And it literally soundslike the guitar player from Fury Road,
the guy that's it's so chaotic, but it's also a player on Fury Road.
But yeah, it's it's very it'sreally well done. Like you,
you won't guess who the killer is. I'll tell you that right now.
Anybody who's watching it, you cantake all the guesses you want, you
(02:06:38):
will never guess it. It's thecar. It's not the car. You
see the person putting on gloves andstuff and throughout the time, So the
car comes to a lot, it'sthe car. Haven't you seen the Disney
movie Cars? They can kill people. I've seen. It's not Owen Wilson,
he's in cars. Great opening sceneof this woman getting chased and she's
run off the freeway. I thinkit takes place on the Ventura Freeway.
(02:06:59):
But yeah, the black gloved driverin a van. Then this news reporter
played by Shelley hat caatches one eventand she begins investigating, which puts her
in danger. So obviously the finalShowdown kind of involves her. A lot
of the scenes on the freeway arekind of nerve racking. It's just drivers
trying to merge or exit and aroundspeeding drivers. Felt me made me feel
very kind of uncomfortable and just tense. But I bust out laughing. I
(02:07:23):
have to say in this one scenewhere this badly burned woman she was burned
in a wreck after the driver causedher to crash, is telling the reporter
about hearing the music coming from hisvan, and she's like, she says
it's like country, like crazy fiddlingand that he was getting off on it.
And her husband's standing there with areporter and he, you know,
(02:07:46):
the camera zooms in on him andhe says, my god, how sick
can one creep kid? And hiswife dies right there after. He's like
thinking of this fiddler guy, andhis wife just dies in the bed.
I just started fucking laughing. Butno, Shelley Hack is great and and
I think everybody else is. GeorgeHamilton plays her very horny, very very
(02:08:09):
tan ex husband who's trying to gether back. How neat him actually comes
up. He has a great roleas the instructor of a defensive driving class
who teaches. Yeah, and thensig Hagg pops up, is like he's
just some sort of he's in acar club like these gear heads, and
he's like, I know who theguy is you're looking for. Go talk
(02:08:30):
to the guy with the scar onhis face, you know, like putting
it. It's fun. I meanit's and as soon as he popped up,
I was like, that's the killer. That's the fucking driver Sid Haig.
Anyways, Yeah, wait, didyou just spoil it? No,
because I guess you're not going toguess it. You're not going to guess
who the cans it's the car watchit weird unraveling at the end. It's
(02:08:52):
almost a little anti climactic, anticlimactic, but I really dug it.
Great stump work, as you kindof expect from the director. But yeah,
yeah, no spoilers, because thisis when I could see picking for
a future episode. It's that fun. Okay, I just don't know if
it I'm into it fall I guessit falls into horror. There's definitely some
dead bodies. I'm sorry, there'sa there's a car killing people, like,
(02:09:16):
yeah, that's all. I mean, you're talking about a different movie.
But I do recommend it was onYouTube. It's got the horror tag
on it. It does on letterOkay, yeah, count it. It's
it's it's great and Sam has seenit. No surprise. Yeah no,
I starts with a heart three start. I gave it three and a half.
I think, yeah you did,Yeah, I mean very close to
four. I feel like this shouldbe a pick this year. I think
(02:09:39):
it might be. I'm into itbecause I want you to pick it so
I can watch it a lot ofit's in dangerous games, like Dangerous Game,
the Hospilitation picks. I got afew all right to put on the
excellent, but yours though cars.I watched thunder Road from nineteen fifty eight.
This is on a lot of places. Prime to the freeby Hoopla Anyway,
(02:10:03):
and it's all over the place. It's based on an original story by
and starring Robert Mitcham. He playsLuke, who returns home from the Korean
War. His father's a moonshiner andLuke is the runner, and so he's
basically like running from the cops, running from gangsters who are trying to take
over all the while he's trying tokeep his kid brother out of the moonshining
(02:10:28):
business. He's got some love intereststhat are like, you need to quit
moon In or Shining or whatever itis one of them. It's probably shining,
although moon and would be funny.Yeah, it's you know, beautiful
black and white, like just fastcars up and down like Appalachian sorry,
Appalachian mountain roads and shit, it'sjust Mitcham just looking fucking cool with his
(02:10:54):
greased hair and cigarette dangling out ofhis mouth and just just being a snack
better than his emotionless brother. Yeah, my god, Yes, Okay,
So James Mitcham, Yeah, wholooks like him but not not. I
mean he doesn't have, like he'snot as bad as Chris Mitcham, but
(02:11:16):
like he doesn't have he doesn't carryye. How do you just just you
can't compete with Robert Mitcham is reallywhat it comes down to. It's true,
like any because they all look thesame. You could share ninety eight
percent of Robert Mitcham's genes and justyou not. You cannot pull off what
that man can do. You cannotbe as cool as him. You cannot
(02:11:37):
be as sexy as him. Ijust you can't do it. I'm sorry,
you can't be as like menacing oranything like. He's just perfection and
fucking everything he does, even whenhe phones it in in like you know,
later eighties movies and stuff like,I don't care like I think he's
wonderful and perfect and uh yeah.Thunder Road nineteen fifty eight. Everyone should
(02:12:01):
watch it. More savage than theTommy Gun massacre of the Roaring twenties.
Nobody beats a federal murder rap. They'll stalk those ridges until there isn't that's
still left in Kentucky or Tennessee. You think it's that easier? Now,
how rough do you want it?You put your dirty fat hands on my
(02:12:22):
kid brother. I swore I'd killanybody that tried to make him a whiskey
runner. That hard headed hillbilly hascaused us enough trouble already that I we're
going to take him out, andI mean really out. I get gone
trap between the team men and theterror moub on thunder Road Vigilantes. So
(02:12:50):
I watched Wild Team from nineteen eightyfive. This was on Prime. I
read the description wrong, and Ididn't. Honestly, I was like,
I'm busy this month. I'm notgoing to change it out and try and
find another vigilante movie. And becauseI don't know whatever, it's actually merchant
mercenaries, not vigilante. So I'mlike, whatever, it's close enough.
(02:13:11):
Yeah, it works. And thereason I didn't want to change it out
was because it's got Antonio Sabato andI love him, and I even rasam
Off and they're leading a group torescue the kidnapped son of the president of
some other country, directed by UmbertoLenzi. It's not great, but not
(02:13:31):
entirely forgettable because it has sort ofI don't know, it feelt like the
movie was on a timer where it'slike, oh, they're getting bored now
throwing something interesting, make everyone gohang gliding, and so you have a
scene of the group like Sabata andRasamov going hand gliding. I'm like,
okay, sure, like I'm intoit. I don't know. It's not
(02:13:52):
very good, but you know,it's Italian, it's an action movie.
It checks some boxes. It's worthwatching at some point. Nice. So
my Vigilante maybe I had. Thisis why I had Chris mitcham on my
my mind because he stars in thisone. Oh, it's The Executioner Part
(02:14:13):
two, directed by James Bryan, who did Jungle Trap, Lady Street Fighter,
Don't Go in the Woods, allthose good great ones. Renee Harmon
is the producer writer. She playsa journalist in this. Like I said,
Chris Mitchen plays his emotionless self, like as I like pulled this up,
(02:14:33):
like when you're finished talking about yourvigilante, I was like, he
was in he's in this movie.I watched the movie. He is.
He's terrible. He can be inlike the greatest movie around him where like
Final Score, like that movie isa fucking banger. Everything is exploding around
Chris Mitcham and he's just like,yeah, he's terrible. It's it's it's
(02:14:58):
a amazing When crime took over thecity, he came down, cleaned it
up. Muggers, rapists and thumbsbeware death will started the Exterminator continuing The
Executioner part too, will finish it. But yeah, so the movies.
(02:15:22):
The movie, I had a lotof fun with the first five minutes.
It's like Vietnam nineteen seventy US soldiersare all getting slaughtered. Then like an
immediate cut to like a downtown sceneand the city cops are at a murder
scene and they're talking and the onlycute, the only clue that they have
is that the killer calls himself theExecutioner. I'm like this, this thing's
(02:15:43):
gonna fucking rule. And yeah, there's the executioner. He's cleaning up the
city. He's killing the criminals,he's killing the rapists, the drug dealers,
the pimps, blowing them up withgrenades. It's pissing the police off
because everybody in the city think that, you know, he's doing a better
job than all of them, sothey really want to catch them. You
know. It's James Brian. It'svery low budget, which could turn some
(02:16:07):
people off, but you know howwe like movies. Yeah, that's super
fun. It's got a fantastic postertoo. It does there is Yeah,
obviously there's no. It's not asequel. It's just the Executioner Pard too.
But I love these actors who areputting is Chris Mitcham, who are
just putting. It becomes entertaining howlittle effort they're putting into their performances.
(02:16:28):
And what I love about these typeof movies and the Executioner Part two is
a perfect example. Is that allthe men in there, whether they're playing
like college students or cops or studentgang members, young and old, they're
all like thirty or forty something likeout of shapement. And I'm like,
I can I can relate to that, like this is real life, Like
(02:16:52):
this is good, this is whatI'm here. It's just fun to watch.
This is why I'm here. It'sexactly what I was hoping. It'd
be one of the funnest watches outof the month. Check it out Executioner
Part two. I forgot where Iwatched it. Then we're going to is
this our last free space? Thisis the last one? Yeah. Day
twenty six I went with Zeus thecrime Killer. It's a vanity project by
(02:17:15):
George pan Andreas, this Greek actorhe wrote, directed, starred in it.
It's from nineteen eighty seven. I'mgoing to read the summary on letterbox
because it's a mess. Like themovie. Zeus is all business, a
no frill, a no frills, hard nosed CIA agent under normal circumstances.
(02:17:37):
First off, he's actually a copyunder normal circumstances, a furious, unrelenting
crime killer, when rubbed the wrongway. Forced into an early retirement for
a bit of overly destructive police work, Zeus must sit by and watch as
a crime syndicate wages war against drugenforcement agents and makes a laughing stock of
the intelligence community. Only one mancan turn the tables in this unholy war.
(02:18:01):
The FBI enlists Zeus as an undercoveragent. Only this time he has
given free reign to use any andall methods at his disposal. Like a
man possessed, Zeus throws his entirearsenal of wit, weaponry, and vengeance
into his job. That's a longthat's on the letter box. It's on
(02:18:22):
the letterbox bord, and it's perfectbecause that's what the that's what the movies
like. It's just like, what'shappening, what's going on? It's too
long, Zeus. I feel likethe director, George Panadras, he wrote
that, like it, like he'sso serious in his character. Yeah,
I felt like that this is whatthis movie is, kind of what June
(02:18:45):
Spilitation is all about. Really,I watched it actually last night. It
was the perfect kind of way toclose it out. I just got to
go. I had a few bulletpoints from like so many fun moments.
The guy playing the chief of police, he's a fucking cartoon overacting, my
kind of overacting, just totally losinghis mind. There's the music by Hugh
(02:19:07):
Coles. It's so ill it's soill fitting. It becomes like a character
of its own. Zeus recruits hisVietnam buddies to train with him, and
there's this training montage that you haveto see to believe. I believe it.
Zeus kicks a guy into a pooland the guy, you know,
it's like a gangster guy. He'slike yelling, He's like, I can't
swim, I can't swim, andit's just like a shallow little pool as
(02:19:28):
he's fighting to stay above water, and Zeus coolly looks at him and he
says, learn, punk learn, and walks away. So the guy drowns
in the pool. And it hasa great original song during the end credit.
It's called Zeus the Man. Imean, this feels like something that
I mean, it feels like avinegar syndrome release, like somebody's gonna go
(02:19:50):
a hold of it. I don'tknow if pan Andreas is like tough to
work with, because I read somethings on He's still making like this was
his only movie and then he madeanother movie like twenty's seventeen or something,
The Matadors. It's two hours withEric Roberts. I think I think he's
making a new movie, Eric Roberts. Eric Roberts is the CIA director,
as he should be when he's notbeing a doctor. But the ending is
(02:20:15):
so the whole movie, he's veryserious. This is an action you know,
it's overacting. It feels kind ofalmost like Miami Connection, like it's
just they you know, he wantsto stop the bad guys. And the
ending is terrible because it is thisweird attempt at humor for the first time,
and while the whole time like itwanted to be taken seriously. So
it just complete fail at the ending. But I do recommend this. I
(02:20:37):
think it will get a release.Some I think forgets a release. I
think people will kind of lose theirminds on it. It's really fun eighty
So how is Robert zadarn On inthis movie? That's what I want?
This seems like all I mean,I guess he had to put himself in
it, and Roberts at art wouldhave Yeah, he kind of physically,
you know, he's kind of ajust a square jaw guy. But he
(02:21:01):
has no charisma at all. Ohokay, overacts like why can you how
can you kick me off the force? I do everything, it's my life
to protect this city. It's justso, it's the best, amazing.
Okay, your last free space,Last free space. I watched Atlantis from
nineteen ninety. This is in theMichael J. Murphy Indicator box set.
(02:21:24):
He's a low budget British director.I've only watched two or three of his
films from his set so far fromthis set so far. Actually no,
yeah, I watched no a fewof them. I watched The Torment,
the Different you know, Different Torment, Invitation to Hell and Death Run and
(02:21:48):
he I will say that he doesquite a bit with very little, little
something that you know, we loveabout these types of films. You know,
they have ambition, but I thinksome of like the more character focused
ones, like they struggle a littlebit, like the Torment one I didn't
really like very much, and likeJohn and I took us I think four
sittings to get through because we werewatching it night before we're going to bed,
(02:22:11):
and so I could literally get throughtwenty minutes and I was like this
is putting me to sleep because it'sjust talky. But this one is so
it's called Atlantis. It is aboutthe city of there's this underground Atlantis where
this green asparagus looking king wants awoman's psychic power so that he can become
all powerful. So they live below, but there's still people who live above
(02:22:35):
ground, and like they get kidnappedto come down, but the asparagus guy
is looking for like one specific personto steal the power from. There's some
weird incest thing going on at theend that I was like super pumped about.
I was like, fuck yeah,And there's a dead kid he gets
crushed by some crumbling rocks. Thething about this is like I can barely
(02:22:58):
tell you what it's about, butI can like point out certain things that
happen in it. I didn't rememberany character's name when the credits rolled,
but I still enjoyed it. Solike I look back at that, I
like, I enjoyed that movie. It wasn't like that was It's forgettable but
enjoyable. I'll leave it at that. Because it doesn't really have one or
it doesn't really have like a consistentthing that stands out to keep you engaged.
(02:23:22):
It's one of those like timer movieswhere every now and then something pops
up and you're like, oh shit. So the end, I was very
much engaged because I had a deadkid, I had like weird incests going
on, and then like some demonspawn that was being like birthed from some
other woman's Yeah. So again he'sdoing quite a bit with very little,
if anything, and so I thinkI probably gave it three stars. But
(02:23:48):
it's one of those movies where youhave to judge it on the scale of
like really DIY low budget films, right, all right, And the next
category is Barbara Steel and I watchedThe Sapphire from nineteen fifty nine. This
is on two B. Steele isliterally in one scene in this movie has
two lines. So that's like myLennea Quigley Horry gives back. Oh yeah,
(02:24:15):
she literally was in it for likefifty two seconds. I mean whatever.
I got another grade out or oneon letterbox for her on her fimography.
So so Sapphire was directed by BasilDearden. This is the first of
his films that I've seen, butI'm curious to watch more. There's a
young woman who is murdered and herbody is dumped in a park. The
(02:24:39):
police begin investigating, and the fiancelooks pretty guilty. Then the woman's brother
shows up and the police are surprisedto find out that he is black.
So apparently the woman, the deadwoman, his sister, was mixed race,
but was so light skinned that shewas passing herself off as white for
(02:25:01):
many reasons, including avoiding housing discriminationand like you know, school educate all
these other issues. Obviously, SoI didn't really read anything about it.
I just was like Barber Steel thatI haven't seen, Okay, Sapphire,
I'll watch that. I didn't.I didn't even read the synopsis before,
(02:25:22):
so I didn't even know this wasgoing to be a thing. And because
so I was surprised when her brothershowed up, I was like, Oh,
he's black, and is she adopted? Is he adopted? What's going
on? And then you find thisout and it turns into one of the
cops is kind of a racist assholeand the other one is very like pragmatic
and like courteous and like as aperson should be, and like especially a
(02:25:45):
cop. It's just lots of peopleshowing their true colors throughout the investigation,
so it's more of like a socialissue murder mystery. It gets a little
bit convoluted when they start looking intosome nightclub dancers. But overall I thought
it was really enjoyable and I enjoyedit. I'd recommend it. Zaft Fhire
in nineteen fifty nine. Yeah, that's one sounds good. Yeah, Okay,
(02:26:07):
my Barber Steel pick Honeymoon with aStranger. This was Amanda's Amanda is
the Future pick with Our Fear NoEvil. I don't. I didn't know
that Barbara Steel was in it.Yeah, I had watch listed it when
when she mentioned when she mentions it, and then I started looking at barbar
Steels and I was like, oh, it's on my watch list. She's
in that. Okay, I watchit. Yeah. This is an ABC
(02:26:30):
TV movie of the Week from nineteensixty nine starring Janet Lee, Rosano Brazzi,
and Barbara Steele. So Janet Leemarries this wealthy Spanish businessman after three
weeks of knowing him, and thenight after they're married, he just disappears.
She wakes up one night and heis completely gone. You know,
they had been celebrating, she wasdrinking all night. Wakes up in the
(02:26:52):
morning, he's not there. Shegoes to the police after a few days,
asking like what I need help. They're obviously not helpful at all.
And then about thirty minutes into theinto the movie, a different man shows
up as her husband, and he'strying to persuade the cops. She's trying
to persuade the cops that he's nother husband, but he has all the
(02:27:13):
paperwork, all the proof. Youknow, it's kind of insinuating that the
cops think, like, Okay, she's crazy, which is what the new
husband is saying. Oh you're quitplaying with me, honey, you know,
very strange twist. Then about fortyfive minutes and Barbara Steele shows up,
who is playing the husband's sister, the new husband or the new husband's
(02:27:37):
sister. She confirms that the newhusband is to the cops that like,
that is her husband. You know, she's kind of playing with the new
husband. But when the cops aren'taround, the two of them, the
new husband, his sister, BarbaraSteele, and their lawyer played by Eric
Brayden, who's doctor Forben and theColossus The Foreban Project. Yeah, he's
(02:27:58):
great in it. He's completely like, no bullshit type of attitude. They
confront Jantly and they're like, hey, you know, admit that that he's
her husband, and we're gonna payyou, and if you don't, and
then you're gonna leave town, you'regonna be gone. And if you're not,
we're just gonna commit. We're gonnawork to commit you and do a
saying asylum. So you know,it becomes like this, what the fuck?
(02:28:20):
Great twist. Obviously there's the onewith her husband just disappearing, this
guy showing up, and then anotherone pops up like an hour later that
I didn't see. Kevin. I'mlike, holy fucking shit. Yeah,
Like, there's so many wild twistson this that's just a huge surprise.
You won't see a lot of itcoming. Like as much as I like
the twist, I felt like theending leaves a lot to be desired.
(02:28:41):
I think it felt a little tackedon and lazy, a little rushed for
sure, still worth the watch. But yeah, I'm not going to give
any spoilers away because it is funas things just start unraveling and you realize
how all this happened. Barber Steelis great in it. She you know,
she doesn't pop She doesn't show uptill like over halfway in the in
the film, but she's in ittill the very end. Day twenty eight
(02:29:01):
is Western the Last Sunset from nineteensixty one. This was a last minute
change as well. I was atthe in laws, I was getting in
bed. They have stars and theirstars Western Channel. This was before the
smart TV. This just happened tobe starting, and so I was like
fuck. It dis directed by RobertAldrich Aldrich. It's screenplays by Dalton Trombo.
(02:29:30):
Stars Kirk Douglas, Rock Hudson,Dorothy Malone, and Joseph Cotton.
We all love the young old JosephCotton and Kirk Douglas. He plays like
this outlaw on the run who headsback to his old Flames place to find
that she's since been married to aquote old drunk played by Joseph Cotton.
He's probably like twenty years old init, but he looks about fifty five,
(02:29:54):
of course. And Cotton doesn't knowwho he is. But he's doing
a drive and he wants He's like, I need hands, you know,
will you help me? You knowman who used to sleep with my wife?
But he doesn't know this and Kirk. Douglas is like, yeah,
I'll accept, and then in comesRock Hudson who shows up and he's the
law man that's been chasing Douglas. He wants to bring him back to Texas,
(02:30:18):
you know, so he can betried and probably hanged, but they
kind of team up. When helearns that the cattle drive is heading to
Texas, he decides to join onand help along with with Douglas and Cotton,
so they both make their way toTexas and he's he's sticking on the
back of his mind as soon aswe get to Texas, I'll be able
to take him to justice. Butthen it starts turning into him falling in
love with Douglas's old fling, andDouglas starts falling in with his old fling
(02:30:41):
falling in love with his old fling'sdaughter. It's too much drama, too
kind of it's very gross. Yeah, and it's also nearly two hours.
So I was like, again,as I said, I just crawled in
bed after a long day with hangingout of the hanging out the in laws
all days, I'm like, whatis this end? I don't want to
fall asleep because it's not streaming.I don't know. Yeah, no,
(02:31:03):
it was fine. I think Igave it three stars. It's very it's
very like late fifties early sixties Western. It's just a lot of like romantic
drama. What was funny, too, is the characters kept bringing up like
when Rock Hudson was Fine was onthe you know, on the on the
trail looking for Kirk Douglas. Hewould always describe him to other people as
(02:31:24):
he's got a hole in his chinright here, you know, with Kirk
Douglas's big dimple in his chin.So he keeps calling it a hole in
his chin. Okay, Yeah, starts off strong. The ending was very
man kind of overstayed. But itseems like a classic Western. Okay.
I got a classic too that Idon't really I feel like I don't really
(02:31:46):
have anything to say about because it'sHigh Planes Drifter from nineteen seventy three.
I got it from the library.Clint Eastwood plays a ship bag who rolls
in a town. People want himto stay to protect him. He's given
anything he wants for free, andobviously he's got his own motive for sticking
around for the most part, andwe find that out later. But yeah,
(02:32:07):
I mean I loved it for stars, great movie. I'm glad I
finally watched it, but not reallya june'sploitation movie, you know. I
mean it fits a category obviously, but I know we try to do like
lesser scene stuff. But like afterwe had talked about it recently, I
was like, I really need tofinally watch that, and I was like,
Okay, I'm just gonna do that, and I don't need to spend
(02:32:28):
time talking about it because everyone shouldwatch it that hasn't seen it. Yeah,
this is what I need to rewatch. This was one actually I watched
on Stars Western in San Angelo whenI was visiting. Oh wow, so
I need to rewatch it. Geta lot of different setting, getting a
lot of mileage out of that time. I love their Stars Westerns. But
yeah, sometimes I would like throughoutthe day, I'd go scroll ahead the
guide and be like, what's comingon at about ten o'clock because that's probably
(02:32:52):
when I'll get in bed. Yeah, so I'd be like, Sarah,
let's get to bed. Like it'llbe different now they have smart TV.
Yeah all right. So then nextcategory is new horizons and this is what
I mentioned earlier. Blood Fist twofrom nineteen ninety. It's on Tube even
Prime. I have not seen BloodFist one. But here's how I decided
(02:33:15):
blood Fist. The first one iseighty six minutes. This one's eighty four,
so I picked this one. Butalso John had been reading up on
blood Sport knockoffs because he went downthat rabbit hole too, and he read
that this one was better anyway, and you didn't need to see the first
one, so it was fine.So it stars Don the Dragon Wilson.
He's Jake. It opens with akickboxing match and he accidentally kills his opponent
(02:33:41):
and vows never to fight again.A year later, his manager calls him
from Manila says he needs help.Jake goes out there in order to help
him, but then Jake becomes capturedalong with a handful of other martial arts
champions like the ones I mentioned thatare in their credits, are in the
credits on their names. So they'reall taken to this island and they're forced
(02:34:05):
to battle these roided out killers infights to the death. So but it
takes way too long to get tothat point, Like that's not even for
like I don't know, it's likean hour in before it finally gets to
the fights, and I'm like, you got a lot of fights here to
get to, Like, how isthis? Here's the thing too, is
I'm going to read you the letterbox. I know we're getting on in time
(02:34:28):
here, so I'm going to tryit these Okay, Jake is finally captured
and chained to a half dozen martialarts champions. Taken to an island fortress.
They are forced to battle chemically stimulatedkillers in the fight to the death
blah blah blah. So in myhead, I was like, Okay,
so Don the Dragon is chained upwith all of these other fighters that were
(02:34:50):
in the credits, and they're goingto have to like work together, all
chained up against like one after theother, all of these like roided up
killers, right, because they're alldifferent types of like there's one karate,
there's one jiu jitsu, there's onethis and the boxing whatever, and so
like they're gonna take turns because like, oh, well this guy is best
(02:35:11):
suited to kill this fight this guyand whatever. No, they the chains
who fucking cares, Like, yeah, they chain them up on the boat.
But then they get to the boatand they're like here, we're gonna
throw you in the fucking match, and the rich people vote on who's gonna
fight and whatever, Like why wouldyou say that? I had a whole
other movie in my mind that wouldhave been so much better than Blood Fists
too, Like, fucking movie.Don't who wrote that? How dare you
(02:35:35):
you got my hopes up for likea bunch of men being chain ganged and
like fighting fucking people at different levels. Come on, yeah, your movie
sounds amazing. I know. Betrayedby his best friend, the Dragon is
taken to a secret island for abattle of champions. Don Wilson consistently delivers
(02:35:58):
knockout action official Karate Magazine twice, the action twice the adventure, and eleven
on the ten scale since you recablednetwork. Rarely is a sequel more powerful
than the original. Blood Fist twois a knockout inside Karate Magazine. Blood
(02:36:22):
Fist to a knockout movie on thenineties. Anyway, there's okay, So
I was mad at the letterbox description. It took way too long to get
to the fights. There's the villainin this. He answers the phone at
one point, and you know whenDave Chappelle did his like Rick James,
(02:36:46):
and it would be like what, yeah, like that. It sounds just
like that. Also, this movie'sBolo Young has a sick mullet. It's
not Bolo, but it's there Bolo, but he's got a great mullet.
If you go in knowing that noteveryone is chained up to each other and
has to fight, and you knowthat the fights are going to take a
while to get to, it's fine. But like, my expectations were not
(02:37:07):
met, and I was very madat the movie, and so I did
not care for it. I mean, maybe what you had envisioned is in
the eight other blood Fist movies.I don't know if I'm gonna take the
time to find out, John, there's a lot, Yeah, there's there's
quite a bit. And you knowwhat, in the trailer for this it
talks about like Don the Dragon Wilsonblah blah blah. And I don't expect
(02:37:31):
any of these like great martial artiststo be great actors by any means.
But he has zero charisma, Likehe is so boring to watch and to
listen to. Yeah, he's kindof like I mean Michael Dudikov, Like,
yeah, the Oh my god,if you put the two of them
together in a movie, I woulddie. They just fucking mope around for
(02:37:52):
an hour and a half and whoeverless standing wins the fight. I'm gonna
have a Mopov video right now. What about okay, New Horizon? Oh,
I got my last two The FantasticFour from nineteen ninety four Roger Korman
(02:38:13):
production. Oh you've never seen this. I'd never seen this before. So
yeah, it's, you know, the never released superhero film. Yeah.
First off, it has a greatopening with the galaxies and the planets and
stars and like very dramatic music.I'm not I mean, I'm not gonna
lie. The opening credits sold me. It felt like I felt like an
eighties superhero movie, Like I gotlike Superman two vibes. I was feeling
(02:38:35):
it. Oh yeah, and thenyou know, like two minutes later I
kicked off like the real The musicactually got so weird immediately, you know,
I was like I took a Apparentlymusical cues are stolen from Battle Beyond
the Stars. At least the trailerused to the whole music was just alien
didn't fit in. My notes wereall over the place. This was the
(02:38:56):
first movie I watched, I thinkfor June'splitation. Actually I literally yelled I
Think about twenty minutes in like whatthe fuck is this movie? Like what
the fuck is this movie? Witha big smile on my face, I
have to say, because I dolove how simple it all is. Because
the problem with Marvel films now, which you know, I do enjoy a
lot of them, but they getso convoluted and they like intentionally make the
(02:39:20):
plot, which usually like results indirectors and some of the filmmakers to step
away from the project, which ruinsthe movies. But they they just make
them so convoluted and just you know, they want to turn them into like
three movies at once. The FantasticFour is like, hey, let's have
a diamond thief to take a diamondand replace it with the fake one,
which sabotages their mission and explodes andit gives with their powers. Like that's
(02:39:43):
cool, that's fun. That's verycomic, bookie, And apparently I didn't
read a lot of Fantastic for comicsas a kid. I read other superheroes.
But I had read that this stickstrue to a lot of the origin
of the Fantastic Four, and alot of the like the Diamond Theft.
I think he had a name.I forgot what it was. But I
(02:40:03):
actually enjoyed this, Like I've seensome of the newer Fantastic Four movies that
have been made the last twenty yearsor whatever, and this is way better,
way more entertaining. I thought thething looked great. I thought it'd
like a teenage mutant Ninja Turtle fromyou know, like the nineties, played
by He's played by Michael Bailey Smithwho played that muscular super Freddie from The
(02:40:24):
Dream Child and roun elm Street five, same actor. A little fun fact,
and then we have the thing thatthat kind of sucks. It's Doctor
Doom and this is played by RobertCoult's son, Joseph Colt. Doesn't show
his penis, and I think helooks cool. I think it's the best
Doom physical rendition that I've seen. But the mask must muffles his voice so
(02:40:46):
when we talk, so literally GrouseAnd immediately after watching this, I watched
the Doomed documentary and you know,he was very passionate about this, Like
it's I recommend you know, ifyou haven't watched Doomed, but you have
seen this, you need to watchthat documentary because it breaks down everything perfectly
and how into this role. JosephColp was in the whole cast. They
(02:41:07):
did a bunch of like meet andgreets and stuff, but he he's like,
yeah, I was supposed to goback and you know, voice over
all my work, but it justnever happened, right, But yeah,
this is the set that is recycledfrom Carnosaur that I learned from Doomed.
Okay, but I loved it.I gave it. I gave it three
and a half stars. I'd recommendit definitely high rating, just because I
(02:41:30):
enjoyed it and it was early inthe month. Yeah, I kind of
perfectly set my expectations. And thenthe last one is Slashers, so I
didn't want to use I went andsaw In a Violent Nature at the theater
by myself. I don't know Iwanted to see. I wanted a new
take. You know, everybody's like, it's a new Slasher take. I
didn't like it as much as alot of people seem to a lot of
(02:41:52):
the followers on Letterbox. I didn'twant that to be my pick, so
I went with the British proto Slasherfrom nineteen seventy one, which has been
in my watch again for a longtime. Fright starting Susan George, directed
by Peter Collinson. But George starsas a young babysit sitter and she's dealing
with a madman who breaks into thehouse while she's babysitting one night. The
(02:42:16):
parents are are they're out, andwe learned that the woman's husband was previously
institutionalized due to trying to murder her, so you kind of quickly guess who
the killers. But this thing islike beautifully shot in the very beginning.
In the opening, like during thecredits, it has Susan George walking through
the house, you know, tobabysit, and it's like this eerie music's
(02:42:37):
playing. It's kind of foggy, all the leaves are off the tree,
and it has this original song calledLadybird sung by a singer who sounded a
little bit like Daniel Johnston to me, which I think it was a woman
singing. But the movie feels veryHalloween like October vibes because of the weather
even at night that night, Georgeis watching like a zombie movie, an
old black and white movie, soit just feels like something you'd watch during
(02:42:58):
October and there's creepy moments. There'sscenes where like just a man's faces in
the background because he's in the house. Yeah, and you see it.
Susan Georgia, you know, kindof sees out the corner of her eye
and same with the viewer. Youkind of see it and then you kind
of then it's gone. It's likeit's super creepy that that always kind of
creeps me out. But the guyplay playing the nutty ex husband is fantastic.
(02:43:20):
He can't tell the difference between realityand like these visions he's having.
But yeah, this was This isprobably one of my favorites of the month.
Now the screen has a new definitionof error. Is there anything I
want to know missus leydon No?This is Alloyd's real husbands in a nuts
else. Oh, she's a sensiblegirl. She won't be frightened. Right,
(02:43:48):
an experience ripped out of a nightmare. I love Susan george I think
she's gorgeous. I think I loveher and Sonny and Jed the Corbucci.
Yeah, so good. And that'sit. That's my June's splication. Let's
hear your last going out with alittle bit of a whimper here. Unfortunately,
(02:44:11):
I watched the Majorrettes from nineteen eightysix. This is on two B.
This is one that I passed amillion times in the video store and
I just never picked it up.And turns out I wasn't really missing much.
It's directed by Bill Hinzman, Zombiefrom n Living Dad, written by
John Russo another Nina Living Dead alone. So, like I said, I
(02:44:35):
might like I passed this in thevideo store, but like I might have
picked this up if they're if theVHS cover was from the title card in
this movie, because it's like askeleton with a wig, and it's like
it's so it's cute, Like Imight have picked it up. But anyway,
it's not that there's a killer killingMajorrettes, you know, it's but
(02:44:58):
it does check some boxes for ahigh school slasher. It's got a creepy
janitor, it's got boobies in thelocker room. It's oh, it's got
a dark room scene. Ver nice. The kills are really basic. The
killer is just slashing next and that'spretty much it. And then he puts
them in the water to cleanse,to cleanse them, or one dies in
a pulse, so she's already inthe water. It doesn't follow the standard
(02:45:20):
slasher formula. The Killers revealed aboutan hour in and then it just gets
really messy from there, but itis trying to do something different. I'll
give it points for that, butyeah, I just all I wanted was,
you know, you have this killer'smotivation, you can go with that.
And you know he's mad about thesegirls being like, you know,
(02:45:41):
sexualized or whatever, and that's whathe thinks the major uts are and he's
like they need to be cleansed oftheir sin. It's like, well,
fine, then stick with that.Like the fact that we have the reveal
so early and then it turns intolike this sole bribery other bullshit going on,
I'm like, what is this movie? It's messy. Not one of
my favorites of the month. Whatwere my favorites of the month? Since
(02:46:05):
we're closing out here, that wouldbe I mean, high Planes Drifter goes
without saying, but thunder Road forsure, dyllinger Kins are mewing where to
Go, Hickey and Bogs and CiscoPike like those, hands down were my
absolute favorites of the month. Yeah, I'd probably go for my List,
(02:46:26):
Troubleman, Buddies, Occult Is myPassport, and Fright. But yeah,
like Fantastic four, so good. That was a great month for me.
I mean the only one I youknow, and I rarely say stay away
from a movie, but armed responsewith yeah, well I can't stay away
from it because I've got dead kids. So oh yes, got two?
(02:46:46):
Yeah, great to watch it twice. No, I don't rule. Yeah,
the Killing Device my two thousands actionsmovie. I can't. There's no
way I could recommend that to anybody. But everything else is just kind of
there. But like those few thatI mentioned, definitely worth seeking out.
All Right, that was long.Yeah, next episode, we've got Craig
(02:47:09):
and Dennis from def Crocodile will bejoining us to talk about their latest release,
The Savage Hunt of King Stock, that is on sale right now at
Diabolic DVD. You can pick itup or you can just wait to listen
to our episode and hear why youshould watch it, or pick it up
if you can. Thanks to everyonein our discord for sharing your picks daily.
(02:47:31):
You guys were much better about sharingevery single day than both Lance and
I were. I will admit thatI'm I got kind of off track quite
a bit. Yeah, I meanI would have loved it done it daily.
But every year we do. Ithink everybody knows my in laws at
this point. Every year we goin June, and I always like,
I kind of planned my June's plitation, so I kind of cram movies when
(02:47:52):
I can. But yeah, likeI think I've said it before, but
one of my favorite things, ifnot the favorite thing of June's Pulitation is
just seeing people post what they watchbefore our discord. I mean I love
seeing everyone's list at the beginning ofthe month, and like then people like
us who are like I changed itand a little bit I swapped it out
because yeah, and I get it. So yeah, thanks to everyone who
participated. Yeah, we're tired,so we're gonna we're gonna call it there.
(02:48:16):
You guys know where to follow us. We're on all the things.
How about all right? Fine?Next massacre and some words on all the
things. So thanks everyone for stickingthrough this long episode, and we'll see
back next episode with Craig and Dennisfrom Deaf Crocodile, Bye Bye, seem
