Heather (00:00):
Hey you guys!!!! This is Heather Zeitzwolfe, Savvy

(00:04):
Frugal Vegan, and you'relistening to the Vegan Food
Truck Business P odcasts.
Today, we're talking Goonies.
It is one of my favorite filmsgrowing up.
And maybe it was one of yours aswell.
In case you haven't seen it.
the film features a gang ofcourageous kids who were
underdogs.

(00:24):
Spoiler alert for those who havenot seen this film yet.
The goonie kids become theheroes in the end.
When they use a treasure map tosave their neighborhood from
developers.
Just like these kids neededtheir map to guide them through.
Underground.
Tunnels booby traps.
Vegan street, food vendors needa business plan to navigate the

(00:48):
challenges along theirentrepreneurial journey.
Think of this as going on anadventure.
As committed vegans.
We're totally familiar withbeing the underdogs.
We recognize injustice and weare willing to challenge the
status quo.
Right?
Well, Like the good heartedGoonies who stood up against the

(01:08):
villainous Fratelli family we'retaking a stand for what we
believe in.
Whether it be saving sloths fromthe brutality of his family or
pigs from slaughterhouses.
We live every day withcompassion at the forefront.
As a vegan food truck owner, you'll save animals with every
meal you serve.

(01:29):
But your business.
has to be profitable to survive.
Now profit doesn't equal greed.
I know a lot of vegans feelreally weird about earning a
profit.
But I'm not asking you to becomea money grubbing jerk, like the,
Fratellis instead.
Think of it as being financiallystable.
Just like Mikey and the Goonieslearned, it only took one small

(01:53):
bag of treasure to save thetown, not the entire loot.
Like the Goonies.
You will face a choice.
You can remain in your comfortzone, dreaming about owning a
food truck business.
Or take the risk, be courageousand embark on an adventure.
Just like the treasure mapguided the Goonies past

(02:15):
obstacles.
A well-designed business planwill help you navigate the risks
and challenges ahead to besuccessful.
Now you might be thinking.
Writing a business plan is dryerthan an oil-free brand muffin.
But like One Eyeโ€™s Willieโ€™s mapit will serve as your guide to

(02:35):
something uniquely amazing.
which is.
Are you ready for this Yourentrepreneurial vision coming to
life.
Wahhhhh!!! Like a treasureworthy of any pirate
Arghhhhh!!!! Now traditionallypeople create these plans before
launching their business.
Usually to secure funding.

(02:57):
Kind of like how the Gooniesneeded their map before starting
their adventure.
But here's the thing.
It's never too late to createyour business plan think of it
as your living, breathingtreasure map, that evolves as
you discover new paths.
And hunt for uncharteredopportunities.
Maybe you're like Mikey at thestart of the movie full of

(03:19):
dreams.
Except yours is to own a veganice cream truck.
But because you're unsure whereto begin.
You waste time doing the truffleshuffle or perhaps you're
already out there every weekendat farmer's market selling
chocolate dipped.
oatmilk cones from your bikesfreezer cart.

(03:40):
But you're operating purely oninstinct.
Why?
Because you don't have abusiness plan.
Or perhaps You might even havean old plan gathering dust
somewhere like a forgotten map.
And an attic full of cobwebs.
Grabbed your skeleton keybecause regardless of where

(04:01):
you're at on your vegan street, food vendor journey.
You need a treasure map tofinancial success.
The purpose of your businessplan is simple.
It's your navigational tool.
It doesn't need to be 50 pageslong or filled with fancy charts
and jargon.
Like a compass.
It just needs to guide youthrough your journey.

(04:23):
Let's break down your treasuremap into six key sections.
Warning.
This is going to sound likecorporate mumble jumble for a
bit, but I promise I willGoonify this when I break it
down.
Okay.
One is your executive summary.
Two is market analysis andcustomer insight.

(04:44):
Three menu and operations Fourmarketing and promotion, five
financials and budgeting.
And six growth and contingencyplans.
Okay.
Now I'll explain each one ofthese Goonified number one
executive summary.
Think of this as your, Hey, youguys!!.

(05:05):
It's your thrilling introductionthat gets everyone on board.
Just like Mikey, convincing hisfriends about the treasure hunt
you need to impress others as towhy your vegan food truck is
worth getting excited about.
Keep it short and compelling.
Like a movie trailer for yourbusiness.
Our number two.

(05:25):
Market analysis and customerinsight.
Just like the Goonies needed toknow their territory and avoid
the Fratellis, you need tounderstand your landscape.
are your treasure hunters?
I E.
Your customers.
Are they office workers seekinglunchbreak gold.
Weekend adventures exploringfarmer's markets or late night

(05:48):
festival goers.
map out where these groupsgather and identify what
competing ships are alreadysailing in those waters think
about other food trucks, cafes, restaurants, vegan, and non
vegan.
Number three menu andoperations.
This is your pirates treasurechest.

(06:08):
Think about what deliciousplant-based golden nuggets we'll
use serve.
Like the Goonies needed theirsupplies.
And data's inventive gadgets.
You need to plan your equipmentand ingredients and kitchen
workflow.
Will you prep in a commissarykitchen?
How will you handle the lunchrush without getting trapped,

(06:28):
like chunk and Sloth in the,Fratelli's basement.
These are all things you want tothink about.
Number four marketing andpromotion.
Remember mouth played by CoreyFeldman who was full of all
those one liners that got himnoticed.
I want you to contemplate howyou will promote your brand and

(06:48):
business.
To grab people's attentioninstead of data's slick shoes.
You'll be using social media, such as Instagram and Facebook
to build your crew of followers.
How will you partner with localbusinesses to make you stronger?
Think about.
Unexpected alliances that canlead to great adventures.

(07:09):
Just like Mikey's jockey olderbrother, Brandon.
He ended up being an importantaddition to the gang.
Who will be your Brandon?.
All right.
Number five.
Financials and budgeting.
Here's where we count ourdoubloons.
As your financial goonie, I wantto warn you.
To avoid booby traps.

(07:30):
You need a budget that works.
Calculate your startup costs.
Which you can think of as yourinitial investment into your
treasure hunt.
Then your ongoing expenses.
Think of this as your suppliesfor your journey.
And then think of how muchrevenue you need to earn to make

(07:50):
this journey worthwhile.
Like the Goonies tracking theirsteps through the caves.
Track your numbers and adjustwhen needed.
we're on to number six.
This is the last one.
Growth and contingency plans.
What is your Goonies dream?
I want you to really think aboutthis one.
Maybe it's expanding to a fleetof trucks.

(08:13):
Or adding catering services.
Or opening a brick and mortarcafe further down the path.
Also plan for those dangerousFratelli like challenges such as
economic downturns.
Slow seasons.
Or unexpected competition.
Have backup plans.

(08:34):
Think of these as your escaperoutes, just like the Goonies.
These will help you avoidwalking the plank.
And worse drowning.
Ooh.
Which could mean.
Bankruptcy.
All right.
So you got those six.
I'm going to go through them onelast time.
Executive summary to marketinganalysis and customer insight,

(08:55):
three menu and operations formarketing and promotion, five
financials and budgeting and sixgrowth and contingency plans.
I have put together a free PDFwith all the stuff in it for you
to download.
just look in the show notes thelink.
To get that.
If you're thinking this soundslike a lot.

(09:18):
Remember.
The Goonies didn't conquer alltheir challenges at once.
Start with a rough sketch ofyour treasure map.
Who you are, what you'reserving, who's eating it.
And what gold you need tocollect.
The details will come as younavigate your journey.
This map is a living, breathingdocument.

(09:39):
you'll always need to modify it.
Especially when you discoverthings that were unexpected on
your journey.
Over time, your map will getmore detailed as you explore.
Maybe your first price estimateswere off.
No problem.
That's like finding a bettertunnel.
Found a cheaper supplier.
Awesome mark it on your map.
Discovered a new hotspot forcustomers update your route.

(10:03):
This isn't a contract written instone.
It's your living, breathingadventure guide.
When you're feeling things aretough.
Remember the Goonies faced acrucial choice.
Lose their homes by doingnothing.
Or taking a risk following themap to find the treasure that
could save their community.
Similarly your business plan canhelp you evaluate potential

(10:26):
risks.
And help you make betterdecisions, even in challenging
situations.
I know writing a business planmay seem as daunting as facing
the, Fratellis in the basement.
Especially when all you want todo is perfect.
