Ep. 157: Marc H Miller and Gallery 98
Miller received a Ph.D. in art history from NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts in 1979. As an artist he exhibited in New York and Europe throughout the 1970s and 80s. From 1981–85 he was the commentator and interviewer for ART/New York, an educational videotape series that covered art exhibitions. Miller also served as a columnist for the East Village Eye; as curator at the Queens Museum; as a board member for the alternative art space ABC No Rio; and was the founder of the publishing company Ephemera Press. He is currently an advisor to Howl! Happening, a non-profit gallery and archive devoted to the cultural history of the East Village.
About Gallery 98
Gallery 98 specializes in art ephemera: gallery announcement cards, posters, catalogues and other paper items connected to the promotion and appreciation of art. Our items date primarily from the 1960s through the early 2000s when advertising on paper was being replaced by digital communication.
Gallery 98 is a site for scholars and for collectors. For scholars, our goal is to provide a complete history of post-war art as preserved in art ephemera. To further this end, we do not remove sold items from the site. For the benefit of collectors, on the other hand, we have created the “hide sold items” option, which shows only items still available for purchase.
About Marc H Miller & Bettie Ringma, Selling Polaroids in the Bars of Amsterdam, 1980
“What started as a simple business model (camera + alcohol = money) eventually resulted in a remarkable record of a juncture in culture as Amsterdam transitioned from the late 70s to the early 80s. Over four decades later, these pictures—produced with a SX 70 Sonar Autofocus which is now considered iconic—have become part of the collection of the City Archives, which means they are now part of Amsterdam’s collective memory. But the particular fashion and style of the sitters’ outfits and makeup—colors well preserved in the idiosyncratic medium of the Polaroid—also make these images a valuable addition to the history of art.”
