Welcome to The Dead Author Interviews—the only show where our guests are really hard to schedule, even harder to cancel, and have been dead long enough to stop worrying about bad reviews.
For those of you that know who Charlotte Perkins-Gilman is, you probably think of the feminist, the social activist, The Yellow Wallpaper.
But there are a lot of things about Charlotte that you will find out in this interview that may su...
On Wednesday, I interviewed Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
She passed away in 1935, so scheduling was a little challenging.
But, I found out that there's now a signup sheet circulating in the afterlife for authors who want to appear on the show.
Apparently, they're just as curious about us as we are about them.

Today is the final episode of TREASURE ISLAND by Robert Louis Stevenson.
The angry pirates reach the treasure site only to find the excavation hole empty except for a single coin. Believing Long John Silver tricked them, the mutineers turn on him, but Dr. Livesey and Ben Gunn suddenly fire from the trees, scattering the remaining enemies.
On Friday we start the DEAD AUTHOR INTERVIEWS. a new feature on the podcast where I "inter...
Starting next week, I'm launching "Dead Author Interviews"—a new feature on the podcast where I "interview" the authors behind the Public Domain Classics we love.
Our very first guest? Charlotte Perkins-Gilman, author of "Herland" and "The Yellow Wallpaper".
We'll talk about:
*Her background. Where she came from, her marriage, her diagnosis (from which came "The Yellow Wallpaper") all the way to her death (wh...
The pirates push forward on their expedition and are terrified when they discover a skeleton acting as a macabre compass. As they continue to the treasure they hear a horrifying, disembodied voice singing “Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest”. They are once again shocked when they come upon the location of the buried treasure.

The remaining pirates, angry and frustrated over their lack of success, hold a secret council and present Long John Silver with a "Black Spot". Silver calmly outmaneuvers his men by reminding them that they still have the treasure map.
Dr. Livesey arrives at the stockade to treat the sick and injured pirates. Livesey warns Long John that if he holds off on finding the treasure, he will do what he can to save him from the gallo...
Jim Hawkins successfully kills Israel Hands in self-defense, frees the Hispaniola, and steers her away from the pirates.
He then hikes back to the stockade at night. Thinking it belongs to his friends, he sneaks in quietly to go to sleep. He steps on a sleeping man's leg, and Long John Silver's pet parrot, Captain Flint, gives him away.

Climbing aboard the Hispaniola, Jim is surprised to see no one on deck, until he catches sight of Israel Hands. After giving Hands the brandy he begged for, he tells Hands he is taking over the ship.
The ship grounds on the beach and Israel tries to take Jim out. Things don’t always go as planned.

This is it, folks. The end of the Herland journey. This concluding chapter deals with the aftermath of Terry’s trial and the final decisions each character must make about their place in Herland.
I want to thank Melissa Kingsbury for the beautiful narration. I am sure Charlotte Perkins-Gilman would be proud. Once we finish TREASURE ISLAND, we’ll have two more great classics to share with you, so stay tuned.

Jim Hawkins takes matters into his own hands. After deciding to cut the mutinous pirates' ship adrift to strand them, he sneaks aboard the errant schooner, discovers two drunken mutineers fighting, and ultimately takes control of the vessel to save his friends.

In this penultimate chapter, the cultural and personal conflicts between the men and Herland society come to a head—especially in the relationships they’ve tried to form. When the three male explorers marry, they attempt to force their wives into traditional, submissive roles. This ends in disaster: one husband is banished, and the others must drastically reconsider their marital expectations.
The pirates assault Captain Smollett's stockade. The outnumbered defenders hold their ground but suffer severe losses—Jim secretly sneaks off and paddles out into the night on a small, goatskin boat to cut the Hispaniola adrift

This chapter explores two key ideas: the spiritual life of Herland and the growing momentum toward formalizing the romantic relationships between the men and their Herlandian companions.

Jim Hawkins picks up the narrative and reunites with Ben Gunn, The pirates soon bombard the shore with cannon fire. Captain Smollett divides his men into strict watch groups, noting they have three big allies: low pirate morale, rampant island malaria, and the pirates' own penchant for rum.

Today, HERLAND explores social relationships, love, and sexuality—and how fundamentally different Herland's values are from the outside (patriarchal) world the men come from.
This book was written in 1915, when women were largely viewed as domestic non-beings whose primary roles were marriage and motherhood. Yet Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote courageously about a world made better because women were in charge. It amazes me tha...
Dr. Livesey, Captain Smollett, Trelawney, Redruth, and Gray make a final, dangerous trip to shore in an overloaded jolly-boat. Israel Hands, acting as gunner for the pirates on the Hispaniola, fires the ship's long-nine cannon at them.
While the crew manages to sink their own boat to avoid further damage and wade ashore, they lose half their provisions and three of their five guns Despite the constant, ineffective bombardment from t...
The men reunite with the first three women they encountered when the first came to the island, Celis, Alima, and Ellador, and begin active courtships. Jeff falls deeply in love with Celis, while Van and Ellador develop a respectful, friendship-based romance and Terry fails with Alima because of his aggressive, and more traditional ape-like behavior

Jim meets Ben Gunn, a ragged man marooned on the island for three years, who reveals he was part of Flint's original crew and knows the treasure's location. Then, Dr. Livesey takes over narration, detailing how the loyal crew abandons the Hispaniola to establish a fortified position in a stockade on the island.
