Animal Sacrifice: Ritual Mystification and Mythical Demystification in Hinduism In Hinduism, "religious sacrifice," often referred to as "Yajna," traditionally involved offering something of value, like an animal, to the gods as a way to seek favor, with the most prominent form being the sacrifice of animals like goats or horses in elaborate rituals, though the concept has evolved over time to emphasize more symbolic and internalized forms of sacrifice, with many modern Hindus rejecting animal sacrifice due to the principle of ahimsa (non-violence). Key points about religious sacrifice in Hinduism: Vedic origins: The practice of Yajna is deeply rooted in the Vedic period, where animal sacrifices were considered an essential part of worship, with specific rituals like the "Ashvamedha" (horse sacrifice) mentioned in scriptures. Types of offerings: Besides animals, offerings could include milk, butter, grains, and the juice of the Soma plant. Symbolic interpretation: Later interpretations in Hinduism began to view animal sacrifices more symbolically, representing the sacrifice of one's ego or lower desires to attain spiritual liberation. Ahimsa and modern practice: With the emphasis on non-violence (Ahimsa) in Hinduism, most contemporary Hindus do not practice animal sacrifice, focusing instead on offering prayers, devotion, and selfless service as forms of sacrifice. Important terms related to Hindu sacrifice: Yajna: The Sanskrit word for "sacrifice," referring to the act of offering something to the gods. Pashu Bali: Literally meaning "animal sacrifice," a practice prevalent in some sects of Hinduism. Ashvamedha: The most renowned Vedic sacrifice, involving the ritualistic sacrifice of a horse. Purushamedha: A symbolic "human sacrifice" mentioned in Vedic texts, considered to be a purely theoretical concept. Much more is explained in Telugu in our above video.
