The first guitarist to study the instrument at the conservatory in China, Xuefei Yang, has a new recording out to mark the 100th birthday of Erik Satie, 'Chapeau Satie". She tips her hat to the composer with her own arrangements and plays his famous music the Gymnopedie and Gnossienne. Xuefei is living near London but travels to the US for an August through September tour visiting Boston, Baltimore, Bethesda, Philadelphia and many other cities. She explains what she has learned about the enigmatic composer who Joshua Barone recently suggested in a New York Times article we may never truly get to know. Satie's Paris Conservatory teacher said he was the laziest student at the conservatory. Satie told us to "Play on the tongue" in interpreting his music and you should "equip your self with clairvoyance." Xuefei says the Wigmore Hall is one of her favorite places to play in London but she hopes to return to Pittsburgh having played here only once before for the Guitar Society of Pittsburgh.
