Welcome to the wandering musings of AJ and A-Rey!

(00:04):
To Mamas After Dark!
Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
Hello! Welcome, welcome!

(00:28):
Now...
Did you have something you wanted to say before we jumped in?
No?
Not right now?
Do I?
I don't know. Anyways...
Wait, what was I gonna say?
Oh, I don't remember.
Okay.
I think it was for a different part and my brain is like, wait a second.

(00:52):
I'm jumping the gun.
Okay, I was like, wait, do I?
It's time to spill the tea.
What are you thinking? What are you drinking?
Whatcha drinking?
Now I'm all confused and flustered.
Well, now we're on spill the tea.
I'll get us back on track.
We're on spill the tea.

(01:14):
I'm just...
And...
I am...
I'm drinking kombucha.
It's peach tea kombucha and water.
I cannot get on board with kombucha.
It makes my tummy feel better, so I have gotten on board because of necessity.
For you.

(01:36):
I don't drink it all the time and I have my like, I'm not touching that.
Ones where I'm like, whoa, no, don't have to buy that again.
That's funny.
Oh, and I have coffee.
Oh, that's unusual.
We haven't seen you drinking coffee in a while.
Oh, I like your mug.
Hold that up again.
That's cute.
I wish...

(01:57):
That's...
I have a set of them.
They're spot.
Because I have a spot in the house.
That's cute.
And one time, one time when our roommate was here, which we don't have anymore,
but I poured it in this mug for him to separate like, whose was whose.

(02:19):
And this person grabbed that one and I was like, okay, well, I mean, that was her spot.
And she was like, I get it now.
Light bulb.
You know, we all have those moments.
Like me just now when I was like, do you have something to do?
You're all like, ah.

(02:40):
I legit was like, wait, was this...
No one died.
I haven't.
I'm not getting married.
No one's pregnant.
Additional.
Yeah, I was like, there's no additional people coming into our lives.
Did you see the panic on my face?
I did.
What was I supposed to share?
I did.
Let's listen to some musings.

(03:02):
Quotes, poems, short stories, inspirational, uplifting news, and of course, tippy dippy astrology.
Well, I'll share that we have a quote in our musings today.
Musing?
It's from my calendar again.
It's just a really good one.

(03:26):
It's the best.
It's from Jen Sincero, and it's the number one thing that holds people back is resisting change.
Yep.
Yeah.
And I have found when you resist change, it hurts the most because you're like, no, I don't want to do that.
No, no, I don't want to do that.
And you go through all of this turmoil.

(03:47):
And then when you make the change, you're like, I should have done that.
Should have done it.
Yep.
I might as well just do it.
Yep.
Quit resisting.
Change isn't a bad thing.
I think sometimes we put such a heaviness to the word change, and it's an opportunity to grow, and it's an opportunity to better ourselves.

(04:11):
I'm okay with change, but I don't like it.
I don't think anyone prefers it.
It's difficult for me to change, but I can do it.
I might grumble about it.

(04:33):
But ultimately, I know that it's for a good reason.
As long as you can explain to me rationally why this change is happening, then I'm fine with it.
Yeah, that's fair.
If I don't see the purpose, then it's a little harder.
But sometimes you don't see the purpose until hindsight, and that makes it hard.

(04:54):
I think that's what makes it hard.
Of course, sometimes we just like to complain.
I mean, that's true.
I had a friend at the theater that we were talking about this.
We were like, well, I mean, I don't actually mind being here.
I just like complaining about coming.

(05:16):
Like that's just part of the reason why I can complain about it.
How funny.
And I was like, you know, that's legit.
Like I don't, it's like when I go swimming, because I worked in a pool for a long time.
This is me explaining why I'm bringing this up.

(05:37):
I used to work in a pool for a very long time, and it was really hard for me to get in the water.
But once I was in the water, I was fine.
Because I do enjoy swimming and participating that way.
And actually AJ can attest, I function nice.
I'm a nicer human being when I do go swimming.

(06:02):
That's like, but it's like me going to the gym.
I will complain online all the way to the gym.
But once I'm there and going, that's awesome.
It's fine. Same idea. Same idea.
So change while you're going through it.
You're like, I don't want to do this. I don't want to do this.
But then by the time you're done, you're like, oh, fine.

(06:25):
It wasn't that big of a deal with your friends.
Like is that why you were complaining the whole time?
And you're like, I was complaining to complain.
Like, come on.
Just let me have my moment.
Clearly you don't understand how this works.
But moving right along into our hippie dippy world.
I wanted to talk to you about basil.

(06:49):
Cause I love basil. It smells amazing.
It's the one plant that I can't get to grow for me.
Wow.
So it's, it's my challenge plant.
I have a plant that I can't get to grow.
But I, what was so frustrating is that I read about it and people

(07:13):
are like, Oh, it's really easy to take care of. I'm like.
The West.
Do you know why you can't get it to grow?
No, if I did, I, I would have.
Okay.
Okay.
The last.
One that I was the closest at.
I was like, I'm going to grow it.

(07:34):
I'm going to grow it.
I'm going to grow it.
And then I got this one that I got just before my grandma passed away.
And.
It was.
She was doing good. She was doing good. She's rocking.
We were going great. And then I left.
And spot was like, I took care of it. I promise.

(07:55):
I think he might've overloved it.
I think it just gets over loved.
We haven't figured out how to not.
Love it.
It's just like, I'm like, I'm just going to grow it.
I'm going to grow it.
And then I over love plants.
Yeah, but your umbrella one is doing so.
It's happy.
So it's me.
Yeah.

(08:16):
So about basil. Sorry. Whoa.
My brain.
I asked you.
So, I mean, come on. You were answering my question.
That's true.
Oh, good. I'm just like glitter.
I'm just like glitter.
So, but I think that's why I said,
that's why I said the basil.
There are different variants of basil.
I think we've all seen that maybe when you go into like.

(08:37):
Your grocery store and you see like sweet basil, Thai basil.
Lemon basil.
I don't know if there's lemon basil, but anyways.
Holy basil.
Purple basil.
All of these basils. Right.
I did not know that.
But I'm not a huge fan of basil.
There's lemon time.
I think that's why I said,
I think that's why I said lemon basil, but there is not lemon basil.
That would be magical if it was.

(08:59):
But there are health benefits.
It's not just a culinary yummy treat.
There are some health benefits to basil.
And that is that it provides antioxidants to reduce stress.
Can support liver health and other medicinal properties.
It is one of the herbs that the.
The.

(09:22):
The herbivetic system uses for treatment and in its teas.
Basil can purify the atmosphere.
Cause it smells really good.
Oh,
Love it.
But it also is associated with longevity.
And health.
And it helps repels.
It helps repel.
I can talk.

(09:43):
Insect.
And it's a really good.
Yeah.
It's one of.
The yummy things.
Is basal.
See, and I really don't know much about this.
Like I said, I'm not super fond of it,
but is that the one that you put on?
What is that?
Food.

(10:05):
Okay.
You can use it in pesto.
I don't know the name of it because it's got tomatoes on it and I don't
like tomatoes. I don't eat it that often.
But it's a good idea.
You put the bread and then you put.
Yep.
It is.
The white.
Stuff.
Your, your white cheese.
Tomatoes.

(10:27):
This is going to.
What's the food?
The brush.
Yeah.
But you know what I'm talking about.
I'm talking about the food that you put on the bread.
And then you put it on the.
The.
The.
The.
Your picture.
I'm froze.

(10:48):
And your nose.
You had your finger on your nose.
Like.
I promise we will eventually have it to where we will release our videos.
No, no.
We will not.
We're learning right now.
One thing at a time.
Right.
Yeah.
I'm thinking of.

(11:11):
Today is one thing at a time.
But that is the food that has the basil on it.
Is that what I'm thinking of? Okay.
That is.
I don't like tomatoes and I'm not fond of basil,
but that particular snack.
Food thingy.
I like those two things.
So I had a friend who was in the culinary world.
And she was.
She.
She's the one that I don't know if I told you this before.
She would open up a wine bottle with her knife.

(11:34):
And she would put the tomato jelly on it.
And she would put the.
I don't know if I'm saying this, but I've never seen people do that.
Yeah.
So.
It's a, it's a cool trick.
But she made this.
Breschetta bread.
But instead of having actual tomatoes on it.
She made like a tomato jelly.
And I tried it.
It's amazing.
Cause you would put the, you have.

(11:55):
You're toast your bread, right?
And then you would put the tomato jelly on it.
So it's a little sweeter.
And then you would put the basil leaf on it.
And then you would put the.
You know,
You know,
Whatever.
Wet cheese that you wanted.
White cheese. It's usually mozzarella, but it can be.
There are other forms of cheese.
And then you would put the.

(12:20):
Basil leaf on it and you would do a balsamic on top of it.
Drizzle it on it.
And then he would put just a little bit of salt on it.
Just to have the sweet and savory kind of mixed together.
And then he would put the basil leaf and then he would put the.
Basil leaf on it.
So it's just like,
I don't know if it's weird.
I'll make it sometime.
Okay.
Awesome.
Well, thank you.
Give me excuses for that.
I planted.

(12:42):
So I planned. I tried this thing.
We're totally off.
Kilter now because we talked about this, but.
I tried.
Where I had.
You slice up a tomato.
And he plant.
The slices of tomato.
Where we're.
Starting your.
Tomato.
this year. The first time I've tried it I've been reading it over four years to do it this way.

(13:03):
So from these tomato plants maybe we'll get tomatoes that we can use for the tomato challenge.
If not I'll buy tomatoes.
That's awesome. Right now there's nothing in the soil because the little things haven't sprouted yet

(13:26):
but yeah I'm watering sliced tomatoes. That sounds so funny. It does sound funny.
Well thank you for sharing about basil. Yeah I was like so that's that.
Well I found a um for the uplifting news moment. I found a news article and I mean it's not really

(13:53):
like a good news or uplifting news moment but it is at the same time. I wanted to share it because
you know our whole cheers to womanhood you know mantra. Yeah it is about a Pennsylvania

(14:13):
entrepreneur that left her six-figure engineering job and founded a girls auto clinic.
She started up a auto shop that's run by women. I like this. And it's special because

(14:39):
you can drop your car off to get you know whatever work you need done
and then go inside and you get your nails done. I was gonna say do you get all your manicure?
I was like why do you need to take the car and I just do I don't know it's making a sound.

(15:10):
Yes thank you. Yeah well we need that here. We need that around here. I don't necessarily
need my hands painted because I don't usually like those painted but my feet I love getting
my feet painted. My toenails. I can talk. Yes yeah pedicures yeah. So it's been open since 2013

(15:36):
but I guess it just now started getting a lot of publicity I guess. Good for them. Yeah and she
said that it started because she and her friend that she worked with would go to a specific auto

(15:56):
body shop on their lunch break because there was a nail salon next to it. They'd drop off their car
to get worked on and then go get their nails done. Combine the two. Why aren't we doing that?
Employ women while you're at it you know. Yeah and the nice thing too is like um

(16:23):
it makes it less stressful because when you're sitting there I find me personally when I'm
sitting there waiting for my car to be done I'm like what are they gonna find? How much money?
Am I gonna have to but if you're getting pampered you're not stressing about the situation? She said
that her clients get access to free wi-fi snacks and beverages hundreds of books and then the

(16:45):
Blooney Beauty Clinic nail salon while they wait and then they are um. All right you just said like
my favorite things. I know right. Food, water and I get books. And then they're told about their
caps and the loop about their car and what's going on the whole time. So I mean. Nice.

(17:08):
Uh freaking cheers to womanhood right there. Make sure make sure I have that uh resource so I can
put it in. I usually do. I'm just like it's there for you. We're focused on it right now for some
reason. So all of you in the thing area go support them. Yeah do extra for us because we think it's a

(17:31):
great idea but we're not there. We're not even close by to that so go for us too. So that was
um. The moment. I love it. I love it. Maybe they'll make the bruschetta bread that we were talking
about for snacks. Yeah. Yeah. Splish splash. We're diving into the main topic.

(18:02):
Anyways. Should we dive right into the main topic? We should dive right in but you have something.
Now this is where you want to tell us. This is where. Q. I hit the Q. So as everybody knows our
episodes release on Tuesdays and at the time that this episode releases yesterday. Well okay hold on

(18:29):
now I'm gonna add something. Now when we're recording this it is pre. Yes. What we're gonna
talk about. Yes. So we're not crazy is what I'm trying to say. Well when this episode releases.
Okay we are crazy but not for this. Yeah so at the time that it releases it's it's Tuesday April

(18:52):
2nd making it yesterday's day it would be Monday April 1st or April Fool's Day. So April Fool's.
Yeah so uh yeah you know you know us we gotta talk about April Fool's. Well yeah because I

(19:12):
it's a holiday observance but that we don't get off from school or work. It's a holiday but it's
not a holiday. Yeah but no one really talks about why we're doing this. Besides the fact that you
know taking every opportunity to be silly is great. But why? Why are we doing this? So we wanted to

(19:36):
talk about why we're doing this. So with that we're talking about April Fool's Day while we're
diving right in. Yeah. But did you did you find that there is a couple of things that leads to
why we celebrate April Fool's? Yeah the history of it is kind of fascinating to me. I was not expecting

(20:03):
to find what I found. Well I wish more people talked about it because it's it's pretty cool.
Yeah so what did you find? I found that one of the speculations is that it dates back to
France in 1582 when they were transitioning from the Julian calendar which is kind of similar to

(20:26):
the Hindu calendar. Whereas you celebrate the beginning of the new year April 1st around or
around the spring equinox. So they were going from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar
which is what we use now. As per the decree of the council of Trent in 1563. So those who maybe got

(20:56):
the news late because it didn't spread like we we spread now. Or we're just still celebrating the
new year in April they became the targets of jokes and hoaxes earning the new April Fool's.

(21:18):
So the pranks included this this is kind of cute though. The pranks included having a paper fish
on their backs and being referred to as Poisson d'Avril meaning April fish. It was a symbol of
young easily caught fish and gullible people. I thought that was funny. I was like oh I just need

(21:40):
to start putting fish on people. And then everybody would be like what are you doing? What are you doing?
Here's a bag of Swedish fish. April Fool's. I'll just be like what are you psycho?
Yes I am. And then so that was pranks. Yeah. And then in Scotland April Fool's Day

(22:00):
actually spans two days. Did you see that? Then the first day is I'm going to totally
mispronounce this but it's the gawk day. Referencing the gawk. At first I thought it said gawk and I was
like hmm interesting choice. The gawk gawk or the gawk gawk gawk. I don't know. The gawk gawk.

(22:27):
Which is a symbol of fool. And then the second day is the tali day when people will play pranks such
as putting a tail on someone or putting a kick me sign on their back. I like the fish one better.
That's where we get the kick me signs. Yeah I like the fish one better. Me too. But that was like

(22:52):
that was more the 18th century right? Yes. Yep. Yeah. Did you find that in ancient Rome
the festival Hilaria meaning joyful was also a speculation of why we have April Fool's? Yeah.
So people would dress up in disguises and playfully mock their fellow citizens and

(23:17):
that included magistrates by the way. And this was inspired by the Egyptian legend the Isis
Osiris and Seth. Did you read that? I did not see that part. Yeah. So I found that interesting.
Yeah. But it explains why people dress up and why people you know kind of joke around

(23:45):
and say the opposite of what they truly feel about you. Or maybe they don't and you just know that.
And I
the the history of pranks like it goes back way way far back.

(24:07):
Yeah. They've been doing this a long time. I found some pretty funny pranks that they played on
like dating back to like 1957 even. Tell me. The BBC reported that Swiss farmers were reporting

(24:30):
or experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from trees.
I love it. I just thought that was so funny. It's a harmless prank. But that's what it's about.
Nobody should be doing yucky stuff. No. No. It needs to be fun and lighthearted and

(24:56):
it's an opportunity after the winter to you know there's a theme here because we were talking about
this last time. Not last time but the time I don't know. Anyways we were talking about it
previously and not so far back about how we had all this time in winter and the darkness and then

(25:17):
people are coming out and having joy like with Easter having egg hunts and just you know having
a little fun and this is an opportunity to still have a little bit of fun and you don't have to
spend a whole lot on it and just kind of play. We don't always give ourselves as adults the

(25:41):
opportunity to play and which we should I think but this gives us a reason to.
Another one that I thought this was funny because this shows that just everybody gets down to these
funny jokes and you know pranks. In 1994 PC Magazine ran a column about a bill making its

(26:07):
way through Congress that would prohibit the use of internet while intoxicated.
Oh that's a smart bill. We need that one. Although the name of the contact person was listed as
Lerpa Slouf, first name Slouf, so if you spell that backwards.

(26:32):
April Fools. Yep. Many people took that story seriously.
Oh I feel bad for the person whom I actually called that. That's a rough name.
And then I read this one. This is hilarious to me. I don't know if you read any of these but in 1996

(26:59):
Taco Bell got on board with April Fools. I love it. Tell me, tell me, tell me. They duped people
when it announced that Taco Bell had purchased and agreed to purchase the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia
and intended to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell. That's kind of cool. And Taco Bell took out

(27:25):
newspaper ads saying it had bought the Liberty Bell in an effort to help the national debt.
And even some senators were like bought it. They totally believed it.
The National Park Service had to have a press conference to deny it.

(27:51):
And they were like no, no, no, no. And then at noon the fast food chain
admitted the joke and said, just kidding, we're actually just donating $50,000 for the landmark
fair. Oh I love this so much. So my family, I think it drives my stepmom a little crazy. We are a

(28:16):
family of teasers. If we tease you, we like you is the thought process of our family. And I think
it probably started before my great grandpa but he was the person that I knew. And so I would hear
stories of, because he passed away when I was seven, I would hear stories of like what he would do and

(28:39):
I was like, oh, that explains why my family, we don't like if you cry. If you cry then we're like,
oh I'm so sorry because we're super thoughtful, if that makes sense. We try to be super polite.
But at the same regard, if we can get you to laugh, which is what I try to do to AJ all the time,

(29:02):
and stuff like that, then we are like, yes, we're so excited. But if you cry then we're like, oh no
I'm so sorry. Took it too far. I was just joking. So this is like one that my family has always loved
doing. And my poor stepmom, when she first was part of our family, we would do stuff to her and she was

(29:28):
like, what are you doing? We'd be like, April Fools! Or, oh we're just joking. Because she would be
like, she would get mad and we were just like, I don't know what to do with you. So during April
Fools, when people play pranks on you, please try to take it as the fact that they actually love and

(29:49):
care about you and that's why they're putting forth the effort to make you laugh, or to have fun.
Yes, yeah. That's my little disclaimer as a teaser myself. Sometimes things are taken too far
or on that day and some people don't believe everything that's announced.
Yeah, it's a tread line. I don't. So don't do any groundbreaking news until the next day.

(30:14):
Essentially. Yeah, don't be announcing anything on April Fools! I don't believe anybody
on anything that they say on that that day. I just. I have to see it in like 10 different places.
I say come back tomorrow and then tell me. We'll have this conversation again. Did you know that
we are not the only place. Well, I mean, obviously I have thought this before, but we're not the only

(30:42):
place that celebrates April Fools! Obviously. France is one of them. As in the United States,
you mean? Yes. Yes, thank you. Yeah, it's like a worldwide thing. Thank you for helping me speak today.
It's been a rough one. That brain fog is just setting right in. Yes, yeah, we it's not just
the United States thing. Yeah, so France still does the Poisson d'Avril. Finland, they do it.

(31:13):
I'm not even going to try to say how they what they call it, but they shout it out like April Fools!
And all of the other stuff. And it translates from their Finnish to April trick, eat herring,

(31:34):
drink muddy water afterwards. What? And the Finns even say it says right here, Finns admit it doesn't
make much sense to them either, but I love it. Fair enough. April trick, eat herring, drink muddy
water afterwards. So that's my new motto for April Fools. I love it. If I remember it, because it's long.

(31:59):
I ran the the 13th day of the Persian New Year, which overlaps with April 1st or 2nd, is celebrated
as Sidzah, Beder, or Nature Day. I like this. People picnic outdoors with friends and throw
leafy greens into water to ward off bad luck. Oh, I like that. Yeah, so add that in there, but the

(32:27):
leafy greens, it's like April Fools, we're throwing in water. I don't know. I'm just trying to tie it in.
Yeah. So I was like, oh, I like that to ward off bad luck and to celebrate nature.
Italy, the Italians celebrate April Fools in a manner same as the French. I'm not even going

(32:48):
to try to say it in Italian as well, but it's probably close to Pesci because that's how it is
in Portuguese too, is Pesci. Again, April Fools, they tape paper fish to unsuspecting victims.
So not just to people that they're targeting. They just kind of go around doing it.

(33:10):
Italian newspaper companies and even the government join in the festivities.
So it's a little bit more popular than it is here in the U.S. Netherlands,
Dutch traditions are straightforward. They shout, first April. I'm not going to say it in
the Dutch that I'm reading, but it translates to first of April. I know. First of April,

(33:35):
frog in your butt that never wants to come out again. What? Is that one of those things that
loses something in translation? I hope. I think so. I think so.
But yeah, I just wanted to share that. But as we were saying before, it's an opportunity to be fun,

(33:58):
to be lighthearted. Don't do anything that's going to hurt people. Don't break anything.
And I, that's just the mom and me coming out right now. I was researching, I was like,
is there any rules? Like, are there, are there rules?
Are there rules around April Fool's? Because, you know, are we, how are no laws broken? I mean,

(34:27):
you would hope that everybody would have common etiquette and courtesy of everything.
I'm sure there are, and they probably get in trouble because you should still be mindful.
I found that there's no official rule book for April Fool's, but, you know, a good prank should
do no harm or break any laws. However, it is said, and I did not know this, it is said that we should

(34:52):
only be doing April Fool's jokes until 12 p.m. or noon. Oh, I didn't know that either.
With any, and this is tradition, with anyone playing a joke after midday,
then being considered the quote, April Fool. And some believe that playing pranks past noon brings

(35:16):
bad luck. I also read that this is also so that people can get back to their workday without being
interrupted. Or it's handy for parents so that dinner and bedtime routines are not interrupted.
And I was like, oh, I love it. They're thinkers. Yes. That's why they get paid the big bucks.

(35:42):
Oh, yeah. But I, I've never heard of that. And I, I like it. I can't say that I,
many people that I wish I knew that when I was younger, because I could have been like, yo,
I'm done. I've had it here. We're done. I, the people I'm around, I don't think they

(36:04):
know that rule because, you know, I'm looking at all the social media posts. They're playing
pranks all day long. But I like this new. There you go. This new knowledge of the rule,
because I feel like it's probably an old rule. We just didn't. Yeah. People forgot about it,
conveniently forgot about it. Um. We both. Thanks again.

(36:31):
You. Um. It's a throwdown. It's a challenge. We've got something for you.
I wanted to put a challenge. For us. It's not April Fool's Challenge.
April. Just kidding. Um. But this week, whilst coming off of this fun holiday, just to

(37:00):
let go and hopefully not be hurtful to people, um, this week, do something fun and lighthearted
for yourself and for your family. I like that. Thank you. Yeah. I'm going to have to remember

(37:22):
that because I'm not, I'm not a fan of. I always go into my little rabbit hole and don't talk to
people. I'm gone. Bye. We'll make your little rabbit hole something that's fun and lighthearted.
You can focus a little bit more on, on that as opposed to pranks and trickery and stuff like

(37:44):
that. It can be just fun. So that is our challenge. Do something fun and lighthearted for yourself
and your family. Love it. You've heard enough about us. Let's get a little bit from you.
Here's your Q and A and your polls. Sip your tea. Let's chat a while.

(38:07):
Do you have a Q and A for us? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe.
What are some of the funniest or just in general fun April Fool's Day tricks,
pranks that you have seen, heard of, or been a part of? We want to know. Maybe Airey wants some ideas.

(38:33):
Better not be ideas to play on me. Uh-uh. Look at this boy. I, I, I'm, you know, I've been on this
earth for four decades and I run out of ideas from time to time and I need a little help.
We just want to know. Or we just want to laugh with you. It's true. All right. Well, we love you.

(38:54):
We're so grateful for you. We want to hear from you. Um, and we hope you have a blessed day.
Happy April. Bye. Okay. Bye. Thanks for hanging with AJ and Airey. We hope we've brought a little
