Foreign.
Welcome back to anotherepisode of Wands and Wishes.
This is our in depth series asLauren Mallard and myself going through
the parks at Walt Disney World.
Later on, Universal Studios togive you sort of a one stop guide
if you're planning a trip toeither one of these theme parks in
Florida.
But now we're doing a ratherinteresting park and that is Hollywood

(00:22):
Studios once named mgm.
Hollywood Studios built aroundthe time when Universal was starting
to establish some dominance orsome sort of a presence in the Florida
market.
And Michael Eisner wanted apark that would compete with that.
And so they created a moviethemed park that has probably gone
through more changes than anytheme park of any of them in the

(00:43):
Florida theme park area.
Lauren Mallet, all the magic travel.
How are you?
Hey, I'm good.
How are you?
As I was saying, this is sortof a unique park because of all the
parks, this is, this is the one.
It's not just a facelift thatthis park has gone through since
like 1989.
This is a completetransformation, it really is, of
what it was and what it wasdesigned to do to what it's become.
Yeah.
So of, of all the parks thatsort of took on Walt's idea of always

(01:06):
changing, this park absolutelyhas changed.
It really has.
You know, when you think backto I, my first Visit was in 1991.
So MGM was a baby at that point.
And so I can remember thingslike the back lot where you go and
you have the big catastrophecanyon and all the whole things.

(01:27):
And you know, I wondersometimes if they kind of did this
park on a trial and error basis.
Like, okay, we got to come upwith something really big because
Universal is coming down andthen they're slowly adding things
to it to give us what we havetoday that now has, you know, just
such a big presence with Starwars and Toy Story Land and you still
have Rock and roller coasterand toy Tower of Terror.

(01:50):
But it really has, like yousaid, it's evolved so much over the
years.
Yeah, I can remember some ofthe better things to do.
There was like the art ofsound when you put on the headphones,
remember?
And like you could hear asound behind you.
You can hear a sound to theleft or to the right.
So it was little things likethat just sort of showed you movie
magic.
And now you're right.
Here's Star wars, here'sPixar, here's some of the more the

(02:12):
best themed rides that you'llfind in the park.
I'll make the argument, Ithink pound for pound Just, just
thinking about the majorattractions that has the most major
attractions of any of thetheme parks.
Yes.
And so I never want people tooverlook Hollywood Studios because
if you're looking for what'sgoing on at Galaxy's Edge, if you're
looking for some of the betterrides at, with Pixar, if you're looking

(02:34):
for some of the more greatthrill rides in the Disney World
area, that park has all of them.
Absolutely has all of them.
And we're going to go throughthe rides and the park and just the
layout in general and give youour tips for dining, our tips of
navigation and all of theshows that are going on at Hollywood
Studios.
If you like the podcast, please like and subscribe.
Give us a five star review.

(02:55):
Please share it with your friends.
We'd love, love to you to.
Part of what we're doing hereat Wands and Wishes.
All right, so let's start off.
This is designed.
We talked about, you know,Magic Kingdom being a spoken wheel
design.
Epcot's a little different.
This is completely off of the rails.
This is, this is a park that'salmost a, a rectangle.
Almost.
You go left, you go right, yougo up, you go down, you don't really

(03:16):
go in, in a, in an angle.
Right.
There's no right or wrong wayto tour this park.
And, and really the roads, if,if you may, are dead ends.
So like, once you're down atthe end of one road, you can't, you
have to backtrack to get tothe next one.
So it's really difficult.
So I'd say let's just startwith the one that's closest to the

(03:36):
entrance of the park andthat's Sunset Boulevard where we're
going to find Tower of Terrorand Rock and Roller Coaster.
And these are two of the bestthemed rides and best thrill rides
that you'll find in the park.
Rock and Roll Roller Coaster, which will eventually be changed
to a Muppets roller coaster.
But Aerosmith had it since its inception.
It's an indoor coaster.
Music Fun, loud.

(03:57):
It's one of the more excitingroller coasters in the Disney place.
And then Tower of Terror.
Take your pick.
If that's your thing.
Yes.
You're dropping from a coupleof stories in a more controlled environment,
not just a free fall like yousee at amusement parks.
Right.
Is that your thing?
Tower of Terror?
I absolutely, absolutely hate it.
Okay.
I was wondering because you'vesaid you don't go on other things.

(04:18):
Yeah, no, I hate the feelingof free falling.
Not scary.
The, the Whole ride, the wholeplot of the ride is not scary to
me, but I cannot stand free falling.
And especially now that with the.
The 2.0 of Tower of Terror, where you don't know how many times
you're gonna fall.
That's right.
You know, I remember way backwhen, it was one time, and then they

(04:40):
changed it and it was twotimes, and now they've changed it
again.
And this has been severalyears, but it's.
Now it's random every time.
You're on.
My wife and I, we with thekids, years ago, we were in line,
waiting and waiting and waiting.
Before you got into theelevator, my wife said, I'm out,
I'm out.
And they had to take her wherethe exit is.
She got right to.
Yeah.
And then just said, nope, nope, nope.

(05:01):
Not doing this.
I'm out.
I'm done.
So I ended up going on withthe kids.
I'm with you.
Like, I used to like the feeling.
And as I've gotten older, Idon't know why I don't enjoy that
anymore.
I don't know why.
But I can remember going onthose kind of amusement park drops.
They just take you up and they just.
Right.
And that anticipation isalways like, God.

(05:21):
But you know, once you startfalling, it's going to be over.
You're going to get to the bottom.
Yes.
And now it's this one.
Brings you right back up,drops you again, brings you up, drops
you again.
Not my favorite.
So if the thrill rides areyour thing, these are two of the
best thrill rides that you canget in Walt Disney World.
Yeah.
Now, let's talk about some ofthe transformations that it's had
over the years, because Ithought it was brilliant to make

(05:44):
Toy Story Land or Pixar Placeand all that, that whole area, because
they've got a really hot IPand they've made it so that there's
an entire land dedicated tothe Toy Story Story with some of
the better rides, again, thatwe talked about in the park.
You got Slinky Dog Dash, andyou've got Toy Story Mania, which
if you were to list all of therides in all of the four parks, they

(06:06):
are in the top 10.
For some people.
For some people, absolutely.
And this land as a whole is soimmersive, too.
I.
I have clients that'll say, Ididn't realize that I would really
feel in the movie when I'm inToy Story Land.
And so I tell people, especially those that are like, that
have young kids and they'relike, I don't want to go to Hollywood
studios because we're not intoStar Wars.
There's so much for young kidsat Hollywood studios.

(06:28):
Even if they're not tallenough for Slinky Dog Dash, they
can meet Woody and Buzz andJesse, and they can see the toy soldiers
come through and do their.
Their drumming through.
I guess it's not the toysoldiers, it's the little army.
Little green.
Yeah.
That come through and do theirdrumming in Toy Story Land.
And that alone is wor the park for.
Yeah, exactly.

(06:49):
And Toy Story Mania, if you're.
If you're kind of new to the Disney.
Never been to that technology,to Buzz Lightyear at Disney World,
is almost like a model T to a quarter.
Laughable.
Yeah, it's laughable with.
With the two.
I mean, people who have beenscreaming for Buzz Lightyear to be
updated are.
You're doing it because ofwhat they're seeing over at Toy Story

(07:10):
Mania.
It's video interactive.
It's it there.
It's just so fun.
It's very competitive and neatwhen you're playing around with somebody
else and getting your scoresup and having a good time with that.
But again, these are two ofthe more popular rides in the park.
At Slinky Dog Dash, that linewill go.
It'll loop on busy days allthe way through.
You don't even know where it starts.
And then Toy Story Mania, thesame thing.

(07:31):
Yeah.
So now, if that wasn't enough, they've added Galaxy's Edge.
So I can remember going whenToy Story Land kind of first started,
and they were buildingGalaxy's Edge, and they did the same
thing we talked about earlier.
They blocked off things theydidn't want you to see what they
were building.
And then they launchedGalaxy's Edge, which came with so
much anticipation on whatexactly this would be.

(07:53):
And I think it has one of themost technologically and themed rides.
In Rise of the Resistance, itis by far something that no ride
has ever been able to capturewhere you are really immersed.
When they talk about immersionin a story, you are really immersed
in this story.
Yeah.
From the moment you even getin line, the cast members are taught
to be a part of the story.

(08:14):
And that's what makes it sofun, is that when you're waiting
in line, then you don't evenreally realize that you're still
technically in line beforeyou're actually on the ride.
Yeah.
And so it's definitelysomething that I think they hit out
of the park.
When they did Galaxy's Edge,it was.
Such a great design becausethe idea of we're going to take a
group of people and then we'regoing to take them in a room.
And that's normally the queue.

(08:35):
Right.
Like you think about thestretching room at Haunted Mansion.
You're just kind of waitingand you don't know where you're going.
Right.
If your first time on the rideyou're like, what is this?
But I get it.
I've been to Disney and everytime this is where they hold us until
the rides are kind of ready oryeah, they're gonna take us to another
room where they'll be in line.
But they don't.
They take you on a ship andthen that ship has a story and that
ship has a story that leads toanother story which leads to another

(08:57):
story which eventually leadsto the ride.
And it's all one big.
Some, you know, in symmetrywith, with the entire thing of what
they're doing.
And then there's of coursesmugglers run on the Millennium Falcon.
I'll be honest, I didn't thinkthis was as thrilling, but nostalgic
wise for me it was fantastic.
Yeah, invisibly.
It's, it's just so cool to beable to walk up and say, wow, there

(09:19):
it is.
I mean it's just, it's reallybig and it's just the whole land
as a whole is just, it'sreally, really well done.
They, they borrowed a littlebit of what Universal did with Harry
Potter which was when you aresupposed to be in Harry Potter land
and nothing else.
If it doesn't exist in HarryPotter land, it doesn't exist in
Harry Potter land.
You know, that kind of, thatkind of mentality.

(09:40):
So they're trying to do thisthing with Star wars where you want
a Coke.
Yeah.
But it's going to come in around bottle with the, you know,
with the alien language on it.
That kind of real immersion.
Now I know they've sort of cutback a little bit on cast.
There was supposed to be awhole bunch of stormtroopers walking
around and a whole bunch ofdifferent characters.
They've cut back a little biton that.
But it still is a, is a welldone land.

(10:01):
I know again, Star wars peoplewill debate whether a new land or
something that they'refamiliar with was more appropriate
for that space.
Like would it have been betterif it was Tatooine or would it have
better if it was Coruscantrather than a new land as part of
the story?
But there's no doubt that Starwars is just pouring out of, out

(10:22):
of everything that's in there.
Absolutely.
I do wish they would bringmore character.
I guess they don't really wantto call them meet and greets because
it's not really the same kindof thing.
But I wish they would bringback post Covid.
They haven't even brought backthe march of the first order.
Right.
And that was such a cool thingto see every day at Hollywood Studios.
And I wish they would bringthat back, but, you know, maybe one
day.
All right, so now what'sinteresting about this park, too,

(10:44):
is that as much as we talkabout what's going on at Galaxy's
Edge, there's another Starwars ride that's outside Galaxy's
Edge that they couldn't quitebring over, but it's still within
the park, and that's Star Tours.
This goes back to the 80s, andGeorge Lucas was involved in the
creation of it.
It has gone through a numberof different scenes, different characters.
The ride is still very muchthe same.

(11:04):
You're on some.
Some tourist vessel that getscaught up.
The action, you shake.
I still enjoy it after allthese years.
It's still kind of a cool,cool experience.
This was my favorite ride whenI was a kid.
I can no longer ride it anymore.
It just gets in the.
In the category of all theother simulators, and I just can't
write it anymore.
But.
But it brings back a lot of memories.

(11:24):
This is the one ride, and it'sgone down, obviously, over the years
as.
As better rides have emergedin the park.
This used to be the ride.
I mean, it would line you.
You could see the line outsideof the queue.
It was all of that.
So it used to be the creme dela creme of the rides over there
at Hollywood Studios.
And then there is.
For a lot of people, again, Iget the controversy on this one.

(11:45):
Mickey's a Runaway Railway.
Mickey and Minnie's RunawayRailway, which I like.
I think it's fun.
I do too.
I think it's enjoyable.
I get why people miss thegreat movie ride.
Yeah, great movie ride.
For all the animatronics, hands down, was the best animatronic
experience because of thecharacters were all familiar.
Yeah, you talk about spaceshipEarth and seeing, like, Plato, that
was cool.
But when you saw the WickedWitch of the, you know, the west,

(12:07):
it's really, really cool.
Crazy good.
The Casablanca scene, Alien, Imean, all of the.
James Cagney, all of those scenes.
Mary Poppins, pound for pound, again, just to use that phrase.
It was the best animatronic ride.
Oh, and it had A theme to it,like the driver would switch out.
And it was, it was.
But again, those things aremovie rights and there's behind the

(12:28):
scenes contracts and all ofthose kind of things.
And again, if, to me, ifyou're gonna make a change, make,
make a change to something good.
And I think it's good, I thinkthe railway is good.
If I can't stop you fromtaking something that I know and
love, at least make it tosomething I can future love.
And I, I really like that ride.
And it gives another optionfor little kids that want to actually
ride something and not justhave a show to watch.

(12:50):
And, and I'll be honest here.
And I, and I, I, as a parentnow of two adult children, you can
only go with that IP so longreally, before it, it, a generation
comes up and goes, thatmovie's 100 years old.
Sure.
Like I like, you know, I, Ilove Casablanca.
It's my favorite movie.
That movie was made in 1940.
Yeah.
My kids would have no idea.

(13:10):
Right, exactly.
And it gets to a point whereyou can, like the scene of the classic
movies are all black and white practically.
Yeah.
So again, you're talking aboutit's expensive to change out animatronics.
It's, it's, you know, expensive to say what, what is another
generation's.
What's their Casablanca?
What's their wizard of Oz?

(13:31):
And change it out to.
You can't keep doing thatevery 20 years.
This is fun.
It's whimsical.
It has the number one IP andit's the only ride in the park that
Mickey is based in.
Yeah.
Which is all four parks.
They don't have one MickeyMouse themed ride until they just
built this.
Yeah.
So I, I'm all for it.
Yes, absolutely.
I'm all for it.

(13:52):
So again, like we were sayingearlier, the rides are some of the
best rides you will find inthe park.
Yeah.
Overall, when you look at thispark as a mother of kids, how do
you have your kids reacted tothis park?
How do they enjoy it?
I mean, I kind of went thefirst time with kids who were a little
older.
My daughter was a little younger.
But how have your kids overthe years grown to.

(14:13):
With, with Hollywood Studios?
Yeah, this has definitely beena top for my kids for years, I would
say.
I, I think Graham still putsit as his number one park because
you look at the overall rideslike have the most attractions here.
If like I went with Lily a fewyears ago and we could only do two
parks, she chose Magic Kingdomand Hollywood Studios.
Nice.
So they're always going tochoose this park somewhere in there

(14:35):
because there is such a goodmix for all ages and they're at that
thrill seeking age.
And so there's a lot here for,for their age.
Absolutely.
And the other part of, of thatis again, if you're a Star wars fan,
if you got kids that love Starwars, if you got kids love Toy Story,
if you love, if you got thatteenager that likes just thrill rides,
just get me on somethingthat's fast and exciting.

(14:56):
This park checks off all ofthose boxes.
So it doesn't.
One of the reasons I likedoing this podcast or talking about
is because I don't thinkpeople realize some of these kind
of things.
They see this park and theygo, oh, you know, the Magic Kingdom
is always going to be number one.
What should be number two onour list?
Well, my daughter lovesanimals, so I think that park is.
Or what, whatever it may.

(15:17):
And this is not a park to beunderlooked at all.
I mean, overlooked at all.
This is, this is somethingreally be focused on.
Yeah.
All right, now let's get tothe dining because this is, this
is not going to be like WorldShowcase where you've got different
kinds of restaurants anddifferent kinds of flavors.
Yeah.
But it has some of the coolerthemed dining that you'll find.
Sci Fi Diner is one of them.

(15:37):
50s Primetime Diner is another one.
Hollywood and vine is a verygood one.
So the Brown Derby.
Yeah.
Is an upscale dining.
Overall, though, dining experience.
In your opinion of Hollywood studios.
It's my least favorite part todine in.
I just find it to be one thatI'm, I'm never actually looking forward
to a particular especiallyquick service restaurant.

(15:59):
I'm just, most of the time I'mgoing to eat in whatever section
of the park that I'm in.
Right.
If I were going to pick oneoverall, I would say ABC commissary
has the best options, butyou're just gonna find basic theme
park food in most of the quick service.
That's exactly right.
That's a great point.
Here's the other thing too, iswhen I think about all the restaurants

(16:20):
that I've eaten at at DisneyWorld, and I can say that if I ate
here, the food was really goodor the theme was.
I can remember how cool it wasto be in a car in a Sci Fi, you know,
Sci Fi theater.
But the food is basic.
I don't remember the food.
I don't even remember what Iordered or if it was outstanding.
And it was the same thing at50s Primetime Diner.
I remember having the chicken.
Right.
But I don't remember it beingso fabulous.

(16:42):
I wanted to go back for the chicken.
Right.
Like, it was cool that we werein this diner and she was telling
us to get our elbows off the table.
But other than that, the foodwas not overwhelming enough.
That made me go, I ate a greatmeal, right?
Yeah.
I just got a good theme and Igot a good experience, but I don't
remember if I got a good meal there.
So I will say the Orgas Cantina.

(17:02):
Is that.
Yeah, yeah, that's a fun.
Yeah, that's a fun place to go to.
That's very reminiscent ofTatooine and the Star wars movie.
Yes, that's a very cool experience.
If you're into Star Wars, Idefinitely would say, check it out.
It's not just for adults.
Kids can go in there too, geta fun.
Get a fun little drink, someeats and just enjoy it.
Yeah, you'll find some snacksthere and some really cool drinks

(17:23):
and that will bubble.
Or, you know, they got.
They've got some really cool thing.
But it gives you that.
If you're looking forsomething Star wars familiar, if,
like, if you're a nostalgicfor Star wars and you get on the
Millennium Falcon and you sawthe checkerboard chessboard, you're
like, oh, my God, look at this.
This is great.
I got to get a picture.
This is why.
Yeah, that will give you thatfeeling of the cantina and Tatooine.
You'll walk in there going,oh, this is what I remember from

(17:45):
the first Star wars movie.
Movie, yeah.
Now shows at HollywoodStudios, some of the best shows you'll
find.
Really?
Definitely.
I.
And they're adding a few too.
Yes, they are.
I would say for sure.
If you've got little kids, this is a really good option.
If you've got a mixture ofages of kids.
I, for one, do this all thetime with Cora.
We go and watch the Beauty andthe Beast show or the Frozen Sing

(18:08):
along show while my big kidsare doing some of the thrill rides.
Because these shows are sowell done and they're longer.
So you can take that break inthe air conditioning for Frozen.
Now, one note.
Is that for Beauty and the Beast?
If it's August, that is anoutdoor show.
Yeah, you're covered, butyou're not in air conditioning.
So keep that in mind.
If you're looking forsomething that's air conditioned,

(18:29):
that's not going to be.
And how do you, how do you gowith Fantasmic?
It's There's a dining packagethat you can get.
Otherwise you got to get theticket for the show.
Yeah.
So the nighttime spectacularin Hollywood Studios is called Fantasmic
and it is presented in anamphitheater style.
So you would want to line upat least 30 minutes before the show.
They're going to start lettingguests in.
You get a better seat theearlier that you are.

(18:50):
But what you mentioned is thedining package.
So you can pay a premium for adining reservation.
You pay not only for the foodthat you're going to eat, but you
pay basically for reserved seating.
And so when you go to dine forlunch or dinner, they'll give you
a voucher.
Or it may be digital at thispoint, but they'll give you a voucher
that you can go back and youcan go through what's almost like

(19:11):
a fast pass or a lightninglane to view Fantasmic.
And it is a must see show.
It is.
It is the kind of show that ifyou go to other theme parks and you
see that one amphitheater, whether it's like SeaWorld for the,
you know, the, the killerwhale show or something along those
lines, and you say that'sobviously one of their big things.
Sure.
This is one of them.
It is for.
For all of the Walt DisneyParks, this is the show that's going

(19:34):
to bring you all thecharacters, all the really exciting
fireworks, et cetera.
It's really a must see show.
The music of this show is oneof my favorites.
It's one of the best.
It is a park, like we talkedabout earlier, that I think that
when it first opened, it waskind of neat to sort of go back in
time to old Hollywood.

(19:54):
Right.
Like sort of the time we're like.
And Betty.
Betty Gable walking down this.
Right.
That kind of feeling like, look at the paparazzi as they.
Yes, I wish they would bringthem back.
Yeah.
And.
And it has sort of said, yeah, okay, we kind of get it.
We gotta.
We're trying to move in adifferent direction.
So I always have to givecredit to a park to sort of grow.

(20:15):
I do.
I.
I have to say that I think Idon't miss the, the tour.
But I will say the tour wasthe one thing that took a lot of
people out of the park andsaid, we got, we got a lot of people
over and over here when we're at.
When we have a busy day.
Yeah, it was a good shifter.
It was very.
A good, good shifter.
Rise of the Resistance is kindof filling that up a little bit.

(20:37):
It's Kind of filling that role.
But one thing I will say is that.
And this has happened, like, three times or so in my last few
visits to Hollywood Studios, there's always a ride that's down,
so keep that in mind all the time.
Yes.
And the worst is when you'regoing for early entry and multiple
things are down.
I've been there once where Iwent to try to rope drop Slinky Dog.
Well, Slinky Dog was down, andso we tried to shift and go to Rock

(20:59):
and roller Coaster.
Then Rock and Roller Coasterwas down, and we're like, what are
we supposed to do now?
Because these are the twothings that we had in mind to do.
So just know you got to kindof pivot sometimes.
You do really try to keep thatin mind when you go to the parks.
We.
When we went on our last trip,we went and everything was down,
and my wife did a little sweettalking and got us a pass to go to
Magic Kingdom, you know, because we just, you know, they were

(21:20):
the things we wanted to see,and we got a chance to go back, and
the rides were back up andrunning, and we got to catch them.
Yeah.
As.
As the night kind of wore on.
But definitely keep that in mind.
These are highly technicallyadvanced rides.
And then Rise of theResistance is notorious for this.
Like, you'll be in line, andsometimes you don't even know it's
down.
You just hear the rumorthrough the line, it's broken.

(21:41):
It's broken.
Broken.
You start seeing people evengoing back.
Out, and then next thing youknow, you're like, oh, yeah, I need
to check your phone.
You're like, up.
It's down.
Yes.
And you got to go do something else.
But overall, HollywoodStudios, I.
I love it.
I.
I always enjoy my time over there.
I.
I just think it's got so much of.
I can't.
I couldn't always have said that.
There were times where it was,all right, couple of cool things.

(22:03):
But now I think it isabsolutely must see.
I got a friend of mine goingdown, and he's wanting to know a
couple of places that, youknow, he's only going three parks,
which park?
And I said, well, it's reallydepending on your family.
Yeah.
But don't miss Hollywood Studios.
You got three boys I'm surethey all love from ages.
The Star wars, the Toy Story, the thrill rides.
You can't.
You can't beat that.
Make sure that's on your list.

(22:24):
That's right.
Decide between Epcot andAnimal Kingdom based on your family.
But I Think you have to goMagic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios
and then decide on the other one.
That's the advice I alwaysgive you.
Exactly, exactly.
So overall, navigating thepark, do you have a tip or do you
have a method that you sort ofsay, get here first, get here second,
go over here.
Is it all depending on thelightning lanes that you get?

(22:44):
I do think it depends on ifyou have lightning lanes or not.
If you have lightning lanes,my usual suggestion is going to be
for Slinky Dog to be part of that.
And so then my, then mystrategy becomes start with Sunset
Boulevard.
Right.
And especially if you've gotthrill seekers, start with Rock and
roller coaster or start withMickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway.
That way you're kind of in thecenter of the park and you're not

(23:06):
beating too far off the beatenpath to, to get back to your lightning
lanes.
And getting to this park, ifyou're driving on your own is obviously
the parking lot.
And then if you're staying atone of the resorts, you can take
the bus.
But if you're staying atcertain resorts, there's.
This is the Skyliner stop.
That's right.
And that's become so, so handyfor there's a couple of value resorts,
moderate resort and a deluxeresort that get to take advantage

(23:28):
of that.
And it has been such a time saver.
All right, so that'll do itfor our in depth looked at Hollywood
Studios again, a park both ofus really, really like.
