The spirit of Carolina boat building comes alive as we broadcast from the heart of Manteo during the 22nd Annual Carolina Boat Builder Foundation Tournament. Joining us are Rebecca Spencer and Lisa Howell, two women with unique perspectives on the Outer Banks maritime community through their connections to prominent boat building families.

Our conversation reveals the excitement surrounding the upcoming Pirates Cove Billfish tournament and Alice Kelly tournament, both supporting meaningful charitable causes. Rebecca and Lisa offer rare insights into what makes these events special – from the camaraderie among competitors to the community involvement that transforms fishing competitions into a celebration of heritage.

"If you know, you know" becomes the unofficial motto as we explore what makes Dare County the undisputed epicenter of sport fish building. The pride is palpable as they describe how Carolina builders have "paved the way" by blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge innovation. What emerges is a portrait of an industry where multi-generational family businesses thrive alongside loyal employees whose children continue their legacy.

The conversation takes us beyond Manteo to favorite fishing destinations (with a unanimous vote for Costa Rica, though we're warned to "watch out for the monkeys"), and culminates in reflections on what makes a tournament winner: dedication, teamwork, and heart. As one guest perfectly summarizes, "Teamwork makes the dream work" – a philosophy that extends throughout this remarkable community, keeping American maritime traditions alive.

Subscribe to hear our follow-up episode where we'll get the full tournament results and discover which boat claimed the prestigious victory!

Thanks for having us,absolutely, so.
Tell us everything that'swonderful about the Outer Banks.
Specifically, what's going onat Pirates Cove tournament?
What's?

Speaker 2 (00:56):
happening there.
Well, the Pirates Cove, billfish tournament and Alice
Kelly tournaments are coming upsooner than you guys could
imagine.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
When is it.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
So, alice Kelly, registration starts on the 9th
of August.
Oh, wow.
And then we fish on the 10th.
Okay, and move right intoPirates Cove.
The 11th through the 15th,that's amazing it is.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
We're excited.
It's a year of big changes.
We have Red Sky, a great localrestaurant, catering us for that
week.
We're bringing some bands back,we're regrouping and we are
looking for a fun week.
That's amazing.
The town shows up for a lot ofcommunity involvement Absolutely
A lot of fishing and a lot offun.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
So now talk to me.
So, rebecca, you're the, you'reon the board, I am, and so,
lisa, you are the executivedirector assistant director Okay
.
Yep.
So so tell me what.
What does that entail, likethroughout the year?
I mean, I know it takes allyear to put this together.
It's volunteer driven.
There is a lot of behind scenesYep, absolutely.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Both of our tournaments Alice Kelly and
Pirate's Cove are for charity.
Our Alice Kelly goes to womencancer.
A lot of people think it's justbreast cancer but in fact it is
not.
It covers a ton of differentcancers that's wonderful it is a
great fun event, absolutely.
And then the bill fishingtournament is also non-charity
and that gets distributed backto our local community, so it's

(02:15):
a great way to come fish.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Hopefully your boat wins some money and at the same
time you're giving giving backfor the better part, yeah,
giving back.
Yeah.
Now, both of you come fromfamilies of builders, so talk to
me about that who?
Wants to go first.
We do and we like each other.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
I see you better.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
We're actually friends this is quite the coup
to have you both on the samechair.
So tell me, go ahead.
How does that work?
You tell me about Howell orSpencer.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Married in.
Okay, because you're married in, we're married in, we're the
outlaws.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Okay, oh, now I really got you.
This is definitely, this isgoing to make the season.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yes, so my husband is William Howell we run the
drifter out of Oregon Inlet andhis dad is Richie Howell, so
Richie Howell Yachts he's basedout of Wanchese.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
He's been around for a while build some beautiful
boats and that's really cool.
Yep, absolutely.
I am married to daniel spencerand my father-in-law's, paul,
and we are in the heart of man'sharbor in wanchese and we enjoy
every moment of the fishingcommunity, from the yard to the
docks.
It's.
It's a great industry and we'vebeen blessed to meet a lot of
fun people I agree there are somany fun people.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
I don't think I've ever, in any of my trips coming
here to wanchese or to Manteo, that I've ever met anybody that
wasn't just so hospitable andready to take me to like their
most favorite restaurant or totheir best spot, and so they
will give you the shirt off yourback around.
I know, I know and that's sowonderful.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
The Dare County sport fishing community is unlike any
other.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Yeah.
But, so is the boat building.
I mean, it's a huge industrythat a lot of people I don't
think are aware of.
I feel like people either.
It's one of those.
If you know, you know.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
If you know, you know .

Speaker 1 (03:52):
And if you know, you know, you know that we are
absolutely in the epicenter ofsport fish building.
And if you don't know, then youhave to realize you're out of
the loop.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
You're completely out of the loop, and it's a loop
that's always changing.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
So how is it Tell me?
Tell me how it's alwayschanging.
Well, it's fun.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
You've got technology and you've got change of builds
and bigger and faster.
They say it's always better,always.
You know you've got to keep upwith the trend and the
technology but at the same timeyou want to keep that classic
Carolina style.
It's fun to see the localbuilders and how they put their
brains to the paper and whatthey come up with and I may be a

(04:31):
little personal or conceitedbut I feel like Deer County boat
builders.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
They paved the way you can say they're the best.
It's okay, that's why we'rehere.
It's the word's way.
You know they're the best.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
You know they paved their way and not only do they
do it with the boating industry, they do it with personal class,
you're right and they're kindpeople.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
I agree, I agree.
And now family businesses.
I can definitely speak to this.
I'm third generation.
They're fun aren't?

Speaker 2 (04:55):
they.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
You know, and we're celebrating 75 years this year.
Congratulations.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Thank you so.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah, so my grandfather started it in 1950,
and part of one of our culture.
You know, we always talk aboutit and I think you guys, you
know what your culture is, butyou don't really and you're
explaining it to me of howpeople will give the shirt off
their back and they do it right, and the tradition, and so we
call it the same way.
We do it our awards way, anddoing everything to the best you

(05:20):
can possibly do, and whetherthat's taking care of people or
your work, standing by your work, providing the best service
possible or a podcast, you know,in the best location of the
world, just saying it's reallyfun I enjoy at our backyard.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
you see not only father, kids and grandkids out
there working.
We're fortunate enough to seeour employees and
multi-generation and yes, yes, Ihave the same yeah, and so it's
not just your immediate family,it's your work family.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Yes, and when you have.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
The employees are what, who makes us what we are
and without them there is not aspencer yacht.
So we really enjoy andappreciate our employees and
when you have them coming backwith their own generations to
help our generations continue,to me that's what makes Deer
County Deer County, and I agree.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
And I have to say from our perspective, when our
guys come up here to work atSpencer, they're away from their
families three, four weeks at atime.
They fight over who gets tocome.
This is not like and this is inJanuary for us, by the way,
where most of our employees are,in Miami, or at least we're all

(06:31):
in South Florida.
It's cold here in January andfighting.
They're fighting to be here.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Yeah, could be duck hunting.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
It's the food, oh, there's all sorts of things that
they've loved to do.
But they have fallen in love, too, with the culture, and I
think it's interesting how wecan be such different businesses
, for example, and be indifferent locations, but our
cultures are the same, whichhelps us work together.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Absolutely.
I think that's kind of whatmakes sport fishing unique.
It's not just your boatbuilders.
There's a lot that goes intothe boat.
Sure, it's unique.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
yeah, it's not just your boat builders, there's a
lot that goes into the boat sure, it's your electronics, it's
your chairs, it's your fabric,it's down to your woodwork, it's
everything.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
It is hardware stores , yeah, all over the United
States, and when that communityof the boat building industry
all comes together, it is afamily yeah, it's not just a
Dare County family.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
It's a boat building family and that's unique and I
think that's one good thingabout pirates cove and the boat
builders and the pirates covetournament is it brings
everybody home it's almost likea reunion, and it seems like
that when I look around and Iwas watching yesterday, just
even in the giving out theinstructions to the captains,
you know your father-in-lawstanding next to, john standing

(07:41):
next to, and everybody at thatpoint, nobody's a competitor.
This is everybody's boats andwishing everybody a good day of
fishing and here are the rulesyou may want to beat them back
to the dock a little bit fasterOf course, and you may want to
have one more fish.
Or a bigger fish.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
That's right, fine, but at the end of the day it's a
huge family.
It is very cool.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
And it's great to see , and it's not just when they're
here.
You know, nowadays thissporting industry sure.
Yes, you're Mexico, you're here.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
You're Costa Rica, but when you go.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
You see, your family is together, so do you guys get
to go to these places as?

Speaker 1 (08:20):
well, play outside of one cheese.
Where's my favorite?
Where's the favorite?

Speaker 3 (08:26):
place to go, for I like Costa Rica, I'm a Costa
Rica girl.
Okay, all right, I was going tosay, yeah, costa Rica.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
You know I have to admit, I've not been.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
You need to go, I need to go.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Got to go.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
I think I'm being ordered by both.
You need to go okay yeah, I'llthrow the woman touch on it.
You get to sleep in a littlelater.
It's not that long of a ride.
It's flat calm.
You look like you're in thesound.
It's a lot of fishing so you'renot going to get bored.
The food's great, the pools aregreat and people are great yeah
, that's amazing, it is.
That's awesome, it's fun justwatch out for the monkeys for
the monkeys yeah, the monkeysabsolutely yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
So what do you think?
This tournament, who do youthink is going to win?
What do we?
What's our, what's our bet?
Is it going to be a spencer orboat that wins, or is it going
to be a house do?

Speaker 3 (09:09):
you want us to stay friends?
No, I'm joking we just hopeit's someone that's deserving
and okay, gentlemen areabsolutely, and may the best
team win, but we wish all theboats tight lines I know exactly
we love a local boat win.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
We do love a local boat, not the build look yeah
now, what's a local boat?

Speaker 1 (09:28):
a boat that was built here, that stays here.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
North Carolina, eastern North Carolina.
All right, okay, built fromhere.
We're pulling for you we don'tdiscriminate all others but last
time I checked the leaderboard.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
I think there's a handful of local guys that are
pretty high up there.
This okay?
Well, of course they are.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
This is their hometown absolutely, you got to
show it for hometown, okay.
So now what?

Speaker 1 (09:45):
do you guys think about some of these other?
What about other boat shows?
Do you like shows, do you?
I love?

Speaker 3 (09:50):
going to the shows.
I think that's where you meetpeople and that's where your
boating evolves you know that'show we met your father-in-law.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
See, it was at the Fort Lauderdale boat show.
That's a fun boat show it is,and I will say that you better
be our guest if you're comingthis year I'll be back.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
It's going to be at Fort Lauderdale.
Yeah, okay, okay Well.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
I'll make sure that you know we'll probably be doing
another season, so we'll catchup and hear about how the
tournament went.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
We'll do a recap.
Absolutely Okay, that would bereally great.
It's fun to travel and see.
You're always meeting people, you're always learning new
things, and that's what makesthis industry fun.
You're never complete.
There's always something tochange and learn, and it keeps
growing.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Absolutely.
Do you guys get to go to othershows like outside of Sport Fish
, let's say, do you go to like?
For example, one of the world'sbiggest marine equipment shows
is in Amsterdam.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
I'm not going to lie.
Our youngest is graduating thisyear so I'm getting ready to be
empty next year.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
So that's going to change.

Speaker 3 (10:49):
Kids have played a lot of sports so you're here,
there and everywhere.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
What kind of sports.
By the way, I'm a hockey mom,oh.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
I wish you did.
We did football, but youdominated in wrestling.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
But that's cool.
Yeah, you have to.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
I like the tough sports.
If we live where it was cold,we do hockey Okay.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Okay, but I'm from Florida.
It gets colder here than that.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
There's no hockey around here though.

Speaker 1 (11:09):

And they win the opportunity to be able to say
they won Pirate's Cove, thebragging rights in this
