I walked up and I was like, oh,this is so cool, oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
So tell me about
Outer Banks this Week, tell me
about your podcast, and we'rehere to learn, we're here to
learn, all right, so Outer Banksthis Week podcast and Outer
Banks this Week Great question.
Outer Banks this Week is acompany here in Manteo that
specializes in marketing andadvertising.
Okay, we specialize in eat, shop, play and stay that's what
we call it for things to do onthe Outer Banks.
Okay, whether you're here onvacation, whether you're a local
just trying to find differentthings and activities, sure, we
(01:13):
specialize in all of that.
You can find it all online atOuterBanksThisWeekcom.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
A few years ago and I
just started working for this
company within the last threeyears, they approached me about
doing a podcast because I comefrom a radio background.
I'd stopped doing radio and wasjust working a different job.
And they said, hey, we'rethinking about starting up this
podcast and I was like, oh, thatsounds cool.
And they were like we want youto be the host.
And I was like, okay, what's itabout?
And they were like we want itto be nothing but Outer Banks
(01:39):
related things okay whether itbe restaurants, places, fishing
boats, whatever the case may be,anything Outer Banks related.
So I said, okay, let's give thisthing a go, and we are 124
episodes in.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
I do one a week.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
Okay, okay, so you're
a couple years into it now.
Yes, ma'am, yeah, wow.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yes, ma'am, it's been
a lot of fun, has it?
How has it changed?
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Sorry I'm going to
kill your train of thought, but
episode one to episode one 24,.
How do you think it's changed?
Speaker 2 (02:11):
I can tell you a lot
of different ways it's changed.
So I started out with a co-hostand that kind of things happen
there.
It happens, you know it's, it'sjust the way the world is.
And then I was kind of havingto.
I grabbed the bull by the hornsand I was having to do a lot of
it myself and, as far aschanging is concerned, figuring
out what people wanted to hear-what people wanted to listen to.
(02:32):
And I'm still kind of figuringsome of that stuff out it's a
guessing game every week, butI've found a niche where I can
go to if I have any issues or mynumbers are getting low or
whatever, because I always lookat my numbers and that's how we,
you know, in sales, you've gotto look at those numbers.
I mean, you understand some ofthat.
So I'm looking at my numbersand like I found out that if I
do more, I was going to saywhat's the most popular.
(02:54):
What are people tuned in the?
Speaker 1 (02:55):
most for yeah.
Which probably won't be what Ithink it is 2024,.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
my most popular one
has been bar etiquette Okay.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Really.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
How to properly act
at a bar on the Outer Banks and
I interviewed a gentleman namedMr Travis Tyler from Outer Banks
, bruin Station.
Okay, and anytime, I do thosealong with real estate updates.
All right About the real estateforecast.
You know, rentals, sales, stufflike that I'm sure that's hot
here.
It is, and my wife is the.
Oh, what's the correct title?
I'm going to mess this up.
(03:24):
She is the Director of BusinessDevelopment for Beach Realty in
.
Kitty Hawk Okay, they've got acouple different locations and I
have one of her propertymanagement friends come in and
talk to me about stuff.
Okay, that always tends to be ahot one Anytime I do anything
on location, like here atPirate's Cove, I was going to
say what about fishing?
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Fishing, oh yes,
let's talk about fishing.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Yeah, so we have our
own channel specifically for
fishing.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Really Okay Now.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Captain Marty.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
I think I was telling
you a bit about him a minute
ago Captain Marty started out inFM radio.
He really actually started.
Hey, what's up, Dennis?
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Sorry, I know a lot
of people here.
No, we got you.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Hey, this is where we
, the managers of blue water
grill great place to eat, by theway.
Um, captain marty, chartercaptain from back in the 70s,
moved up here from florida, actually, uh, pons inlet.
Okay, he moved up here, starteddown in hatteras, ran boats,
ran charter boats out of oregoninlet for years and years, had
his own bait and tackle shop, hunting store in nags head, wow.
(04:20):
And then he jumped into.
He worked for marine fisheriesfor a while, retired from that
and he's been doing.
He did FM radio for 26 years, wow, and he did fishing reports
and told his stories fromfishing and everything on the
radio.
Well, things went south therewith some things.
You know, things happen, thingschange, things happen, things
change.
And I've worked with him in theradio world and I called him
(04:41):
and he was talking to me aboutsome of it.
I said, marty, there might besome opportunity for you to do
Sure tell some of those stories.
Yes, and do the stories.
We could record them, save them, keep them.
Same thing with your fishingreports.
We could relaunch your show.
And I got my bosses togetherwith him and they reached an
agreement and here we are.
I've been doing things withCaptain Marty now for about a
(05:05):
year and a half Great and he isa wealth of knowledge.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
He's got his own
podcast channel the Captain
Marty.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Yeah, please plug it.
Yeah, you can check him out.
He's on, just like my podcastis on all your major podcast
platforms Spotify, pandora, iheartradio all of them.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
So if I'm tuning into
Captain Marty, what am I going
to learn?
I'm going to learn where thefish is where, where where?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yes, fishing reports
from Hatteras all the way up
here to Corolla.
All else in between Offshore, nearshore, inshore pier reports,
surf reports, sound reports.
He covers it all.
That's amazing, he covers itall and he does a fantastic job.
He's one of my dear friends andI think the world of him and we
also, like I said, with hisfishing stories.
His fishing stories a lot oftimes really gain a lot of
(05:39):
traction because he's tellingabout tales from when he was out
fishing and different thingsthat happened.
Some of them are funny, Some ofthem are like oh my gosh some of
them, some of them are kind of,you know, sad in some ways, you
know, like different thingsthat happened offshore with
people you know Um, but he, hetells them in such a way that
it's it's a very, he's verycaptivating with his words and
(06:00):
he does such a fantastic jobwith it and I, I'm kind of, I'm
kind of like his personalassistant in a lot of ways, okay
, just give you an example.
Last year, during the boatbuilders tournament, I stopped
by just to check on him and hewas like I'm so glad you're here
.
I'm like what's, what's thematter, marty?
He's like I need you to go toget a prescription for me from
from CVS.
And I was like, yes, marty, anduh, we, we travel around.
(06:24):
I take him back and forth thedoctor's appointments if he
needs them, and stuff like that.
So, like he's a dear friend ofmine, we go to church together
sometimes and um.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
So why does he do the
weigh-ins for this particular
tournament?
Is it because it's the builderstournament?
Is it the scholarship element?
Is it there's?
Speaker 2 (06:39):
a lot, a lot of that,
yes, um, and the fact that he
that he also has been highlyinvolved with tournaments over
the years.
After he stopped charterfishing and had his store and
everything like that, he starteddoing a lot of the things with
the Pirates Cove Big GameTournament and then they brought
him in to do the Boat BuildersTournament as well, to be the
waymaster to help keep the score, and he has already such a deep
(07:02):
rapport with a lot of thecaptains.
And he and John Bayliss havebeen best friends since they
moved to the Outer Banks.
They lived together for a longtime Nice, they fished together
on the Tar.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Heel Family when.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
John was captain of
the Tar Heel and had that boat.
Marty was his mate.
I mean the deepness of thatfriend, the depth there is
unfathomable between the two.
With him absolutely and a lotof the stories that marty tells
on his uh channel on his podcastinvolve john bayless.
85 of those stories he'd be likeso we were on the pellet or not
(07:34):
the pelican, excuse me, thatwas a different, but we were on.
We were on the tar heel andjohn was, you know, up at the
helm and you know tell a wholestory that's going.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
yes, I mean, does he
ever try to keep it secret, like
to save anybody, or is he justout with everybody?
Speaker 2 (07:47):
No, he's out with it
all, but I will tell you I have
see, I see John daily.
I'd go.
John has Roanoke Island FitnessLab in Mania a CrossFit gym.
And I work out there.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
And he'll tell a
story Marty will and I'll record
it and edit it and I'll go askJohn about that story and John
will be like I don't remember itlike that.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
You know what I?
Speaker 2 (08:08):
mean.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
Is it like the
fishing stories that get bigger
and bigger and bigger?
In a lot of ways, they just geta lot of yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
In a lot of ways, yes
, and it's hilarious because I
want to get them together oneday to tell stories back and
forth and hear Marty's versionand John's version and see where
the similarities are.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Well, let me say this
how about we do it here, and if
it backfires, I'll get themboth together?
Then you'll know what to do.
We could be your dry run.
I would be totally comfortablewith that.
We're going to do that dry runhere.
I would be totally comfortablewith that.
We'll get it going.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
That would be great.
But all in all, I mean withOuter Banks this Week and again
my podcast on all of thosepodcast platforms, just like
Captain Marty's, and online atOuterBanksThisWeekcom.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
That's kind of where
it's at.
Have you ever heard a story orlearned something that you were
surprised by?
Yes Is there anything thatsurprised you?
Give me the most recent thatsurprised you.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Okay, so the one that
sticks out in my head and I'll
tell you a quick Marty story.
Sure, I will make the longstory short.
At one point, marty's mate, onhis charter boat out of Oregon
Inlet, was the heir to the CoorsBeer Okay, the Coors Brewery
fortune and all that and thewhole thing there.
Sure, the gentleman that yousaw walk by a minute ago, mr
(09:26):
gary oliver, had a charter boatas well.
Well, marty was had the, thecharter itself, the people that
were on the boat.
He never really liked anybody tobe up in the bridge because he
needed to be focused and figureout where he was going, but he,
for one reason or another, thatday he let him up on the bridge
and they were talking to him.
Well, his mate the heir to thethrone, of course was down doing
some things and gary olivercould probably tell the story a
(09:48):
lot better than me, but I amgoing to try to do it and he's
right behind you right now.
So apparently the way it workswas the mate threw a bucket, had
a rope tied to a bucket, wastrying to get some water from
while they were steamingoffshore and his, the bucket
took loose out of his handbecause they were doing I don't
know, 45 knots or so, and therope was wrapped around his foot
(10:10):
and he went overboard with it.
Marty, not knowing, not notpaying, was upstairs in the
charter, occupied him and he didnot know.
Well, lo and behold, not long,I don't know.
I don't know how long it hadbeen a couple hours, maybe an
hour.
I don't know gary oliver been acouple hours, maybe an hour, I
don't know.
Gary Oliver's coming in his boatwith some of his cronies and
they see this bucket andsomebody holding on to this
(10:31):
bucket.
Am I telling it right, boss?
He's right, okay, and they stopand pick him up.
Gary grabs the radio and islike hey, marty, you know.
And calls him on the radio andMarty's like hey, gary.
He's like well, are you missinganything?
Marty's like I don't know.
He said why don't you go lookdown in the cockpit?
Marty looks over in the cockpitand his blood ran cold.
(10:52):
He's like oh my God, gary's likedon't worry, I got him, I'll
bring him to you.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Special delivery.
It went bow to bow, he jumpedoff.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
That's just an
example of a story that Marty
tells on his channel Brad Coors, there we go.
I couldn't think of his firstname.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Yes, there you go,
yeah, so you see, that is one
that is funny.
I can't believe that you couldmiss somebody for that long and
you just happened to be goingalong and find them.
One guy on the party ohgoodness, One guy was up the
flying bridge.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
That's up in the
flying, okay.
So they were looking at the suncoming up, you know.
Yeah, not looking back, yeahand well, and the thing is
that's like, in my way I thinkabout it, that was like an act
of God, that led Gary thatdirection.
Should have seen him jump inthe boat, he's good.
(11:44):
We said who are you?
He said I'm on that boat rightup there.
Oh gosh, well, like I said, that's just an example.
Thanks, boss, your turn'scoming up here in just a minute.
Yeah, it's coming.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
I've got to board
immediately.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Okay, he lives right
around the corner, so he'll
probably be here again tomorrownight, but anyway, that's just
an example of what you can hearon Marty's channel.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
But you're right To
lose somebody off the boat and
just to have another boat comealong and find him, I think is
great.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
I mean it's great
that everything worked out, but
it is one of those stories thatyou wonder.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Absolutely.
Marty's probably going to killme for telling that story.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
That's all right.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
He's probably going
to kill me for telling that
story.
He's already told it.
It's out there on his channel,so if you want to listen to it,
it's man Overboard.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Well, now we just had
it third-party corroborated.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
So you know there's
no harm.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
There's truth to it.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
There's no harm.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
But that's the one
that really sticks out in my
head of one of his stories.
I mean he's got many.
The best way to find all thosestories and you can scroll
through them is to go toOuterBanksThisWeekcom and click
on the Captain Marty tab, and ifthat's too much to think about.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
Go to Google and type
in the word Captain and the
word Marty and it's the firstthing that pops up.
