Speaker 1 (00:00):
no-transcript.
(10:11):
Hey, okay, let's see if thisworks.
(10:38):
I've got lights, I've got sound.
I have all of these amazingmagical things going on in my
office.
Just got to check real quick.
Make sure everything iscopacetic.
If you will, it's 617.
Oh boy, I don't know.
Look at that, I've got stuff.
Okay, good, so this looks likeit's working, which is fantastic
(11:00):
.
I'm totally okay with that.
Now when I switch screens Imight have to mess it up, but
you know, I changed a little bitof stuff here in the office,
moved a couple things around, but it's good to be back, man,
it's been a minute.
You know.
I took a break here torecalibrate what I was doing
with Waves.
I wanted to really rethinkthrough how I was approaching it
, what I was going to do with itand how I was going to carry
(11:22):
the show forward, moving fromApril all the way down into
December, and so I am happy tobe back.
There's so much going on, youknow, and I'll be honest with
you.
I stopped and I thought, okay,do I go back and talk about all
the things that have happenedover the last couple of weeks
and couple of, you know, I guess, a couple of months now, or do
I just start off with somethingfresh, and I figure I'm just
(11:43):
going to start off withsomething fresh because there's
so many things happening and somuch movement in the industry.
But let's start off in a newfoot right after tax day in
April in the United States.
My name is Drew Lentz, thewireless nerd, and this is Waves
.
What's new, what's now, what'snext in the wireless industry,
the industry that we all loveand adore and appreciate.
So you know, I was driving thismorning to drop my kids off at
(12:08):
school and I had to go on anerrand and I thought, man, I
really wish there was a podcastthat I could listen to to catch
me up on what was going on, sothat I could prepare for my
podcast, to let people know whatwas going on.
I guess it occurred to me thatmaybe I left a little bit of a
gap there.
So, nevertheless, here we are, man, there's a lot happening,
(12:31):
and first I want to give acouple of really, really big
shout outs because, carrying usnow from April moving into the
end of December, we have someincredible sponsors that have
stepped up.
I really wanted to do somethingdifferent with the show and I've
got a lot of people who'veasked me how can I be a part of
it, how can I help?
And so what I did is I wantedto offer some sponsorship
(12:54):
opportunities, but only withinthe wireless industry and some
groups of this, because I don'twant it to just be like today's
(13:22):
message is brought to you byTaylorMade golf balls.
What I wanted to do is I wantedto have a strategy that carried
us through, that we could goand say, hey, you know what, you
guys know that this is one ofmy sponsors.
Here's what's happening withthem throughout the rest of the
year, and please don't take itas me being a shill for these
companies.
They know exactly what theywere getting into when they
(13:43):
decided to sponsor me, and sowhat I'd love to do is just real
quick.
I want to shout out the twosponsors that I have signed up
right now.
First is Meter.
Y'all know the team over atMeter, anil and Sunil and the
rest of the team over there.
What a fantastic product thatthey're working on.
Some incredible things thatthey're doing as network, as a
service.
More to come with that.
There's going to be drops atthe beginning, maybe the middle
(14:05):
and the end of the podcast whereI can talk a little bit about
that.
So very, very cool to haveMeter on board officially as a
sponsor.
They're doing so much in thespace and it's more than just
whatever product that they havegoing on.
There's a lot of really coolthings that are happening and
they're doing some really coolinnovative things.
And I want to focus on that onthe innovation side of it,
(14:26):
because I didn't want to justbring on a hardware manufacturer
and say, hey, buy this product.
It's not really about that.
To me, it's about what they'redoing to drive the entire
industry forward, and that'swhat gravitated me towards them
and what built that relationship.
So thank you to Meter, theSarahs over there and everyone
who helped work on this.
There's going to be some reallygreat things coming up.
(14:46):
They have an event that's comingup.
I don't know how much I cantalk about it.
I don't know what's going on,but if you're interested, last
year we did the Meter Up event.
A whole bunch of us went out toSan Francisco to be a part of
it, and so stay tuned to seewhat's happening and how you can
be a part of an event like that.
So that's really cool.
The other sponsor very, verycool Again, we have a couple of
them is a product that I've beenworking with for a while and
(15:12):
it's really neat, and I'm soglad that this turned into a
sponsorship with them, becausewhat they do and what they've
been able to accomplish in sucha short amount of time is
absolutely incredible, and ifyou don't know about them,
you're going to learn a wholelot more over the upcoming weeks
about what their network is,how their network works and how
(15:32):
you can be a part of it, andthat's Helium.
The Helium network has done somereally neat stuff.
I have some of their oldestequipment from FreedomFi sitting
right beside me.
I've got equipment that'smounted outside and if you don't
know what Helium is, I wouldencourage you to go look up the
Helium network and what they'redoing with Helium Mobile.
On top of the network.
There are so many hundreds ofthousands of users of this and
(15:54):
nodes that are deployed, andessentially, you deploy a node
and you can earn credits, youcan earn Helium token back, you
can do all kinds of really greatstuff and it helps grow their
network.
And it goes into thispervasiveness of connectivity.
Right, how are we making surethat everybody stays connected,
which you all know?
If you've listened to the show.
That's a huge part of what Ilove to do is get everybody
(16:15):
connected.
So Helium is on board.
We're going to have some greatconversations with them.
I teased it out a little bitwhen I was out at Coachella this
past weekend, had an incredibleweekend, got to take my family
to Coachella and I grabbed myphone.
I've got this OnePlus 11 righthere and I got this because it's
got a really kick-ass Wi-Fi 7chipset on it and I took it out
(16:36):
there with me and I was like man, I wonder how well this is
going to work.
Maybe there'll be a Heliumnetwork, a close Helium device I
can attach to close atCoachella.
And sure enough, man, they'rean MVNO, they're an operator,
they work on top of anotheroperator that's out there.
Plus, you can offload ontotheir Helium network and, man,
they have a free plan that itdoesn't.
(16:57):
It's there, it's not even asponsored thing.
They have a plan called zero.
If you go to Helium mobile, youcan activate it on an eSIM on
an Android or Apple device.
You can get it going right now.
It doesn't cost anything.
And if you turn on yourlocation services so they can
help map out where everything is, then that earns you credit so
that you can continue to usethat free plan.
Anyway, go check it out, it'spretty cool.
(17:18):
So we're going to be talkingabout the Helium Network, we're
going to be talking about Meter,as this goes on.
So, y'all, thank you so much.
Thank you so much.
And there's another sponsor, ifyou will, that's going to make
the next couple of months reallyexciting.
It's a little bit of adifferent sponsorship
(17:39):
opportunity and instead of justgoing after, you know, let's
talk about the product andwhatever dude, this is a
sponsorship where we're justgoing to give some stuff away.
I don't know how much stuffwe're going to get away with
giving away, but if you likeNetAlly tools, get ready because
I'm going to start handing somestuff out.
(17:59):
We're going to change up thetone a little bit on here.
I've got stacks of accesspoints, stacks of devices.
I've got people who send mestuff all the time that I get to
play with some of the stuff.
I get to play with some of thestuff I don't get a chance to
play with.
But I think Waves this, wavesthis year, is going to be really
cool.
So what I would do is I wouldencourage you to drop a message
into me and let me know whatyou're looking for.
(18:19):
What kind of tools are youworking with?
What kind of toys are youworking with?
What kind of access points andthings are you working with?
Because if I can get them byusing the show and then give
them out as giveaways and promo, then everybody wins right.
So I'm totally down to do that.
And so there's some new toolannouncements that have come out
from NetAlly.
Trying to figure out how to getsome of those in our hand, just
(18:40):
ship it all to me.
Mark says so.
You guys have some people tocontend with.
Mark has a lot of fun toolsthat I have, but there's going
to be some really neat toolsthat are coming out, some good
stuff, and we're going to startcleaning up some of the stuff in
my office that I get as promo.
I'll get a chance to play withit for a little bit and then
I'll ship it off to you if youcan win it.
So, yeah, that's what we'regoing to do with Waves.
(19:02):
So that was just a quick update.
I know I've been gone for awhile.
It has been just on a personalnote.
It has been so exciting.
Man, as you all know, I starteda new career journey in
November, joined the Amazon teamwith Eero and we've been having
just an incredible time.
And it's really forced me tolook at Wi-Fi in a different way
(19:22):
, where, you know, just takingthat whole thing that happened
to me in Hawaii, when I lookedat the perspective of all of it
I was like dude, wait a minute, this is wireless doesn't have to
be the way that we all know.
You know, from an enterpriseperspective, from a business
perspective, from a residentialperspective, what if we knock
the norm?
What if we figure out differentways to do things?
(19:44):
And so I've been having areally good time trying to I
don't want to say square pegsand round holes, but trying to
make things, you know, fit intodifferent environments and have
a really cool time with it.
I've been playing a lot withchannel sizes, you know, fit
into different environments andhave a really cool time with it.
I've been playing a lot withchannel sizes, you know.
And what's funny is and I'mgoing to try this out real quick
I want to flip over and see ifI can share my screen because I
(20:05):
want you to see a comment thatsomeone made.
(20:28):
So let's see if this will work.
Thank you, okay, there we gonow I got the audio back so I
took a second.
My obs is acting weird anyway.
So check this out, man.
I wanted to bring this upbecause because old jakey man, I
love jake and he I don't knowman, he must have been angry, he
had some bad salsa or something, so he pops out this post last
(20:52):
week right, nobody cares about320 megahertz channels, nobody
cares if your next phonesupports it, nobody cares about
your testing of APs running 320megahertz.
It's a feature to pump upmarketing numbers other than
showing the iPerf speed testresults.
Nobody will deploy it forclient access.
Maybe P2P bridging hardware, maybe some limited best use
cases.
Can we stop talking about 320megahertz channels and focus on
(21:13):
technology improvements thatactually matter?
Oh, jakey got 308 hearts andclaps and thumbs up from, you
know, the whole industry, andit's been.
You know, I just noticed thatEric Johnson posted on here, so
that's even funnier, right, because I work with Eric and
just to be clear on that.
But I haven't read his comment.
But you know, this is one ofthose things where I'm looking
(21:36):
at it and it's fascinating to meto just think.
You know, let's just shun 320megahertz channels, because when
I first started here at aresidential Wi-Fi company.
We're like 320 megahertzchannels, hell yeah, I mean I
put it in my office.
You know, let's do this as longas I don't have to worry about
things outside.
You know, this phone is toJake's point, right, this phone
(21:58):
that I was talking about, thisOnePlus 11, it only does 160
megahertz channels, won't evendo a 320 megahertz channel.
So you know, do people reallycare about 320 megahertz
channels?
I mean that is like that's awhole lot of spectrum in 6G,
right, that's a whole lot offrequency to be digging with,
but do people really care?
So the comments have been very, very lively.
(22:21):
All channel modes have a place, dependent on environment.
Totally agree with that.
I feel the same thing when Isee people advocating for 320.
The use case is minuscule fornow, jakey, for now my dear
friend, but this sounds like afun conversation.
60 gig is a way to go forbridges.
Okay, I mean I dig 60 gig.
Have you deployed 60 gig?
I'm a huge fan of 60 gig.
Um, let's see, you have 100clients to service one ap.
(22:42):
What channel size are you goingwith and why this is?
I mean, what a fun, what a fundeal.
So if you haven't debated thiswith jake.
Please jump on uh linkedin andcheck it out, because that's it.
It really.
It's bringing to light a lot ofdifferent things and I don't
want to go back and talk abouthow Bill Gates once said the
whole thing about was it 640Kbut 320 today?
(23:04):
Where's it going to be tomorrow?
So I thought that that waspretty fun.
I wanted to talk about that alittle bit.
What else we got going on?
A couple of different thingshappening.
This one is making me superexcited, y'all.
This is like because I'm anAmerican Airlines nerd.
This one is very excitingAmerican Airlines to provide
complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi,sponsored by AT&T.
That is awesome.
(23:26):
I'm so excited to hear thatbecause I fly American Airlines
and I really want what I thinkDelta has.
I don't, dude, I can't eventell you the last time I flew
Delta, but I think they havefree Wi-Fi.
I don't know.
This is like so great.
I'm excited, as long as itworks.
I was on two legs coming backthis past weekend and on both
(23:47):
the legs the Wi-Fi didn't work.
I was like, man, what are weback in the stone ages?
Anyway, it reminds me of theConan'brien skit where he's like
wait, lucy k conan o'brientalking about sitting in a chair
flying through the air andcomplaining about not having
wi-fi.
That was pretty hilarious.
So that was, you know, that'shappening.
That's pretty, that's prettyexciting.
Um, let's see, you got a littlecomment there copying delta.
(24:08):
Yeah, you know, I don't know,man.
I like I said I've never, Idon't Delta, so I don't really
know what's going on with them.
But other than that, I thinkyou know I'm trying to think of
things that are happening in theindustry right now.
There's, you know, ericsson hada new product announcement that
came out.
There's some cool stuff.
The guys at Ubiquity just didnot just multi-WAN but they did
(24:29):
eight software-defined WAN portson their devices.
There's some interesting thingshappening there.
No huge equipment announcementsI can think of, they're coming
out.
I saw Nokia's doing some stuff.
Ericsson's got some 5G stuffthat they're doing, a lot of
stuff happening in the 5G space.
But from a Wi-Fi perspective itseems like things are trucking
(24:49):
along.
I think everyone's just freakingout about the tariffs.
To be honest, I don't want totalk politics, but I'll talk
tariffs.
That's freaky, deaky man.
I mean, what's going to happen?
How is this going to affecteverybody?
I mean, this isn't just aboutthe consumer.
This is about our jobs, man.
A lot of us work in thisindustry and if the equipment's
(25:11):
more expensive, how are peoplegoing to reconcile that?
No word yet from the SupremeCourt on what they're doing with
USAC that I've seen.
I haven't checked the newstoday, but I haven't seen
anything about USAC and aboutE-rate.
But it was put up.
It said everything looked likeit was going to be net positive.
I don't know if there's beenany movement.
(25:33):
Let's see if I can just runthis in real time, check it out.
So the whole thing right here.
Shelby if you guys don't knowwhat Shelby is this is the
Schools, health and LibrariesBroadband Coalition and you can
see right there on the frontpage that Skoda's case puts
millions at risk of losingInternet access.
I am keenly, keenly watchingthis.
It's been a month.
(25:56):
Right On the 26th was the datethat it went to court and it
said that there might be somegood movement.
But there hasn't been anydefinitive answer on this yet,
which is really scary, becauseif we lose E-rate, that changes
a lot of stuff.
It changes the way that schooldistricts procure, so I won't
beat that one to death.
Y'all have heard me talk aboutthis over and over and over and
(26:18):
over again.
So I won't talk about thatanymore.
That was one of the things thatwas going on.
There's lots of stuff happeningat the FCC.
Man, I don't even know If I golook at FCC right now.
I can't even think about allthe news that's been coming out
recently.
If you just do a quick searchon google, man approves ast
space mobile.
At&t is doing direct to sell.
(26:39):
That was announced, you know, earlier today.
Um, I haven't read that thingabout comcast blasting msnbc for
news, just I mean, this is likeall the political stuff that's
in there.
But there's some spectrumthings that are happening.
Um, yeah, it's, it's hard toit's hard to weed through it,
right, but there was somethinghere about spectrum somewhere,
satellite spectrum sharing, uh,epfd limits.
(27:01):
That was what I was talkingabout.
Anyway, there's a lot happeningat the fcc.
There's delete, delete, delete, which um with, which is an
interesting initiative because,uh, I want to see, I want to see
if this has come up.
They, they're talking aboutdoing things and there was a lot
of talk at NAB about this, theNational Association of
Broadcasters, the event thatjust happened.
(27:23):
I personally am interested tosee if this is going to change
any of the rules regarding LPFMstations.
Man, because I'm a huge, youknow we're all radio nerds.
Let me see if it's in therePushing outdated regulation.
I love broadband breakfast.
I always end up on thebroadband breakfast page in some
way, shape or form.
Let's see.
If they were talking about now, they weren't talking about LPFM
(27:44):
, but there's a you know, whoknows, who knows where that's
gonna go.
If that deregulates a littlebit of what's happening with
LPFM and makes it easier forpeople who want and need to get
licenses, then that's reallycool.
There's a lot of open spectrumfor FM broadcast in the United
States and LPFM is such a coolthing, dude.
Think college radio.
Think about being able to setup a transmitter and cover a
(28:04):
specific area of yourneighborhood.
Jim Carlson from CarlsonWireless I don't know if anybody
remembers Carlson Wireless, butCarlson Wireless was this TV
white space provider and, man, Igot to do some incredible
testing with them.
I wonder if it's.
I don't even know if they'restill around anymore.
Let me see, let me look it up.
(28:26):
Tv white space man.
I got to go.
Oh, it's Carlson Communications.
Here we go.
So I got to go out to work withthese guys in, uh, in upstate
california, in arcata and dudejim carlson such a cool cat man
there's been.
You know, whenever you get achance to go on work trips, some
(28:47):
people make an impact on you,you know, and, and it doesn't
matter if you spend a day withthem or two days or five days
people, people can have animpact in 24 hours.
I got to spend about, I think, three days out there a bunch of
years back talking to these guysand they gave me a full view on
what Carlson Wireless was andwhat they were doing.
(29:07):
But it wasn't just that, it wasJim talking me through and
showing me everything that wasgoing on.
Jim talking me through andshowing me everything that was
going on it was that the storiesthat came out of how he got
involved in wirelesscommunications were so dope that
they just stick with me to thisday.
And one of the things that hedid is he talked about in Arcata
, california, in Humboldt County, how they used to have the fire
(29:28):
reports, to talk about thesmokies coming up, because if
you know anything about HumboldtCounty, you know what used to
grow there before it was illegalin the state of California and
how the NPR station was launchedbecause of that and I mean it's
just like if you're intowireless man, you probably like
(29:48):
radio.
So I'm stoked that maybe LPFMmight be available to more
people.
That was like a really crazysideways rant.
But if you don't do that, maybeLPFM might be available to more
people.
That was like a really crazysideways rant.
But if you don't do anythingwith LPFM, look it up and see if
there's a local station thatyou can work with.
See if there's someone in yourneck of the woods that is
running an LPFM station.
The filing window, I think, islike right now I was looking it
(30:13):
up, they've got a real.
The Reddit group is likenon-existent.
I think these guys still runoff of news groups.
But if you look at like I'mdown here in Texas, let's see
what happens if I go check thisout In Texas, there's a whole
bunch of LPFM stations.
Look at this man and their EIRP.
Look at this 0.095 kilowatt.
That's so awesome.
It shows you where everythingis and it shows you who's up
(30:36):
there.
But if you're looking forsomething really cool and fun to
do and you want to waste sometime, go look at starting an
LPFM station.
So maybe delete, delete, deletemight help that overall.
We'll see, anyway, what else wegot going on.
Man, I want to try and keep it alittle bit short.
You know, I've got a 637 herein Texas right now, so I've got
(30:56):
some dinner that I want to goget to some supper, as we call
it down in the south.
But I do want to run throughsome events that are coming up,
because this is like that seasonwhen events are starting to pop
up and we're going to hear alot of really cool updates that
have happened over the last year, and it starts with this first
one.
Klaus does such an incrediblejob putting together the panels
(31:17):
and the people that are involvedin Wi-Fi and it's not
necessarily even at the likenerd techie level.
It's kind of that likemanagement, cto, you know,
c-level area, and it's reallyneat to hear from these people
that are involved in theindustry day to day, the
business side of the industry, what they're seeing and how
they're moving forward and whatthey're focusing on.
(31:40):
So Wi-Fi Now World Congress iscoming up 28 April it's April
28th through 30th 2025.
It's going to be a mountainview, so it's going to be out in
the Bay Area, which is cool.
Last year it was in, I think wewere in not Fort Lauderdale, we
were in Florida and it wasawesome.
God, the weather was great.
But this is really cool.
It's going to be at theComputer History Museum and
(32:00):
there's two summits co-locatedwith it.
One is Wi-Fi Halo, which I'm ahuge fan of and I love to see it
moving forward, and then, obviously, I'm a big fan of the
Open Wi-Fi Global Summit.
So those two things are goingto be happening.
There's some programs and someinformation about what's
happening in the groups that aregoing to be there, but he has
dude Klaus and the team overthere.
(32:21):
I can't wait to see them.
Veronica and Inger, they'relike stoked.
I love seeing them at all theseevents.
But man, look at this Al Brown.
Look at Al Brown smiling ear toear.
He'll be there, probablytalking about what he's doing
out there in the Bay Area.
But if you look at all thesewonderful faces a lot of them,
you know, some of them areprobably listening.
Hopefully Some of them may nothave even heard, so walk up and
(32:42):
shake their hands and say hello.
But it is like a really killerlist of people that are involved
in this industry, and I willsay that there is one person
that's not going to be therethis year and and it's kind of a
bummer I don't know how much,um, how many of y'all ever got
to interface with Dave taught Uh, but I did a really uh, I did
(33:06):
an interview with him a whileback and he passed away um, this
year.
So, uh, a little, a littlebummed about that.
I know that there's lots ofpeople I'm trying to find a
picture of them on here.
That was a little bit sad tosee what was going on.
But yeah, man, so one person isnot going to be there, but
that's okay.
(33:26):
You know what are you going todo, man?
What else do we have here?
Yeah, sorry, got a littlesidetracked right there.
Oh, I spelled his name wrong.
That's why it didn't come up.
Sorry about that, y'all Anyhow.
So, yeah, that's coming up.
(33:48):
We've got Wi-Fi Now, worldCongress, and then after that
that's coming up.
I think that's in the beginningof May.
And then we've got May 7ththrough 9th, mobility Field Day
13.
Some cool sponsors are going tobe there Nile, juniper,
ubiquiti, salona, fortinet andArista.
Looking forward to the updatesfrom these guys.
It's always exciting to hearfrom them what they're doing and
(34:12):
where they're going.
And what I love about MobilityField Day is they all kind of
stand up and they say, hey, thisis what we talked about last
time, here's an update, here'swhat we're doing this time, and
so I'm looking forward tohearing from Niall.
There's some cool folks overthere that are not going to be
in the crowd this time becausethey now work there.
Mr Ali is going to be there, which is pretty cool.
Junipero is going to give us areally cool update.
(34:33):
Curious, if they talk aboutwhat's happening over there
between the acquisition.
Obviously, they won't be ableto talk about it, but there
might be some side chatter.
Ubiquity I'm looking forward toseeing what updates they bring
to the table.
Solona they just made theannouncement that they signed
their second carrier.
So from a neutral hostperspective, they're AT&T and
T-Mobile.
Now Fortinet always exciting tohear from these guys.
(34:53):
Fortinet pushes security allthe way out to the edge, so it's
exciting to hear what they'regoing to do.
