Speaker 1 (00:08):
you're listening to
the wdym and welcome to the Red
Toffee Show.
I'm your host.
(00:36):
Michael Gillespie of the WDYMJust want to throw out this is
still a WDYM podcast, but we'regoing to dedicate some time to
one of my favorite activities.
Sports to watch is the PremierLeague over in England Premier
League football, or soccer as wecall it over here in the States
.
There's no other person I wouldlike to share this experience
(00:58):
with is with my friend, sean.
Sean is a huge Red Devil fan, ora Manchester United fan, and we
met in culinary school and whenI started talking about the
show about last year with himabout it, he was like, yeah,
that sounds like a good idea, let's do it.
So had to get the idea, thepremises, the music and then the
(01:19):
artworks coming too to do theRed Toffee show with him.
And right now we're just tryingto get times aligned, dates
aligned so we can do this showand hopefully good now will be a
good time because we are at theinternational break, we're
three weeks into premier leagueand, uh, we have some things to
talk about now, normally nowagain, um, he's a a Manchester
(01:44):
United fan and I am a EvertonFootball Club fan.
Both were in the Premier Leagueand everything.
So I thought the show would besomething that we could have fun
with, put it out there, discusswhat happened this week and
everything.
So that's what the Red ToffeeShow is about.
Hope you guys will enjoy it,like it and always, always, text
(02:08):
and talk the show Anytime youwant.
You click on the link in theshow description, but let's talk
about the Premier League andmaybe give you some information
about it that you may or may notknow if you're not a English
football fan.
The Premier League has beenaround since 1992, and
(02:30):
Manchester United is synonymouswith the Premier League because
they have been the standard fora majority of the time the
Premier League has existed.
They've had over 13championships in its existence,
with the last one coming in 2012and 2013, that year and they've
(02:54):
been dominant since the 90s andearly 2000s.
To say that they're strugglingis, to me, is ridiculous.
We'll get into that reason whylater.
We'll get into that reason whylater.
Manchester United has alwaysbeen somewhere close to the
championship of the PremierLeague for the longest time.
They are one of the only sixclubs that have never been
relegated out of the PremierLeague and, speaking of that,
(03:17):
that's one of the things that Ilike about the Premier League is
relegation and promotion.
You can't tank a season like inthe NFL.
You can't just sit back and say, hey, we're going to wait and
draft this person that's comingout of college, so we're not
even going to try this year.
If you don't try, you getrelegated, which means less
money, less TV exposure and anembarrassment.
(03:38):
If you are one of the top, ifyou are one of the six clubs
that's never been relegated outof the Premier League.
Those six teams are Arsenal, chelsea, everton, liverpool,
manchester United and TottenhamHotspur.
One of the things that has beenhappening lately for Manchester
United is that they cannot getout of the ghost of Alex
(04:00):
Ferguson.
Alex Ferguson was their mostfamous coach.
He coached from 1986 to 2013,winning championships and then
coaching some of the bestplayers of the world the Wayne
Roonies, the David Beckhams, paul Scholes, I think his name
is.
There's been so many goodplayers to come out of
Manchester United.
(04:21):
It's amazing how he was able tocoach so many egos and stuff to
put it all together to formManchester United.
It's amazing how he was able tocoach so many egos and stuff to
put it all together to formManchester United.
And then you got the stadiumtoo.
The stadium Old Trafford isnotoriously famously known
around the world.
You could argue that ManchesterUnited is one of the most
popular brands of football ever, but they're struggling.
(04:44):
They're struggling right nowwhen it comes to success.
Now, when I say success and thesuccess that Manchester United
has, their standards are ultrahigh, rightfully so.
13 championships says that theyhave the right to have a high
standard of football.
Since Alex Ferguson is retired, they've had six managers since
(05:10):
Alex Ferguson and they struggleeach and every time because
their standards are so high.
Their standards are so highthat if they win 53%, that's not
good enough for them.
They lose 10 games.
That's not good enough for them.
They lose 10 games.
That's not good enough for them.
And they rightfully I guessrightfully so.
When you are Manchester United, you have this standard of
(05:33):
excellence and these newmanagers are not doing it Now.
Granted, are they given the timethat Alex Ferguson has?
No Again.
Alex Ferguson coached from 1986to 2013.
Let that sink in for a minute.
He was the coach for that long.
There's no patience in Englandfootball.
(05:54):
So they're not giving the timethat Alex Ferguson has, and
maybe that's the problem atManchester United Don't know and
, honestly, I don't care.
So, again, me being an Evertonfan fan we don't have time for
this now.
This today, today's game, manchester united they lost
three to nothing to liverpool.
(06:15):
Now, as an everton fan, I donot like the color red and I
have no idea what's going on atManchester United.
Again, this club is synonymouswith success and finishing
seventh is not.
It's not in the books for anyperson in Manchester who is a
(06:36):
Manchester United fan.
They lost three to nothing andI don't know what they are doing
as far as how are they going torebuild that success that Alex
Ferguson had?
From what I'm seeing, they'retrying to do a youth movement
where they're trying to buildtheir club from within, and I
(06:57):
believe that is one of thethings that made Manchester
United successful.
They had a good farm systemwhere they could have these
people, or they're able to pickand choose whoever they want to
come to Manchester United, and Ithink that's no longer the case
.
They can't just pick and choosewhoever they want, and I think
(07:19):
their current manager, ericTinhag, I think his idea is to
build from within, and they dohave the talent.
I'm not going to lie, they aretalented.
They have enough talent to besuccessful in the Premier League
where they don't have to worryabout relegation.
No, they want Champions Leaguefootball.
(07:44):
Enough talent to be successfulin the premier league where they
don't have to worry aboutrelegation.
No, they want championchampions league football.
And that's a I believe that's atop four finish in the premier
league.
Yeah, top four automaticallygets a spot in the champions
league where they compete allover europe for it to be the
champion of champions, so tospeak, and that's another.
That's another thing all withinit.
That's a whole other thing totackle.
Manchester United has not hadthe success nowhere remotely
(08:06):
near they had with Alex Fergusonand then, on top of the 3-0
defeat, it begs the questionwhat's going on with Manchester
United?
Now, again, some people will belike do we need to sack or fire
the manager for ManchesterUnited?
And with three games into it,the answer is no.
Nobody should be going anywhereclose to sacking a manager
(08:30):
three games into it.
Yes, they've lost twice, butthey have a win.
One win.
Yes, they've lost twice, butthey have a win.
One win, another additional win14th to 7th.
It's too early to panic forpeople.
They shouldn't be anywhere nearworried, even after losing
Liverpool today.
Right now Liverpool is on awhole different level than some
(08:52):
of the other teams in thePremier League.
So after the international break, manchester United does have a
game against Southampton atSouthampton and I believe that
they will get back on a winningtrack.
They will beat SouthamptonSeptember 14th at 7.30 in the
(09:12):
morning.
That's going to be aninteresting game to watch on
September 14th.
So that's my prediction fortheir game.
Their next game they shouldbeat southampton easily in my
book.
So that brings us over to myclub, everton football club.
Now, being a everton fan isprobably one of the most
(09:36):
difficult times in recenthistory.
Like I said before, everton hasnever been relegated from the
Premier League and the lastthree years we have been
challenging that notion ofrelegation, of relegation it's,
(10:01):
it's if you've been, if you'vebeen doing something for since
1992, being in the top status ofthe league, just staying in the
best league, arguably aroundthe world, and to fight
relegation is crazy to me.
Talk to I.
I have a friend of mine who isa older man, who is a huge
(10:21):
everton fan, and last season, last season, I was like hey, how
do you think we want to do?
He's a I.
He's from.
He's from liverpool.
He's like we're gonna getrelegated this season.
I said what I said no, no way.
So he thought we were gettingrelegated last season.
And then we have somethingcalled financial fair play,
where we make sure our books arein line and everything, so we
(10:43):
don't get in trouble with the FA.
And we got deducted 10 points.
So again, let me backtrack alittle bit.
Every time you win, you getthree points.
So we were deducted 10 pointslast season and we still didn't
get relegated.
So this team likes to fight, andwhat I mean by that is that
(11:04):
we're scrappy.
We don't have the talent asmanchester united, and that's
why I love everton football club.
I love everton football clubbecause of that reason.
We're not like the mostshiniest star in the premier
league, but you, you can't cometo our home grounds and expect
to win.
You can't.
You know, when you play evertonfootball club, you're expecting
(11:27):
a battle, right, you'reexpecting a fight when you come
to goodison park and on top ofthat, two american stars, landon
Donovan and Tim Howard, werestars on the team, and that's
why, when, after the World Cupcame around, I was like, well,
they play for Everton.
(11:47):
And then, you know, premierLeague football was on, I think,
on ESPN, and joined to NBC now,and that's why I follow Everton
.
I love Everton Football Club.
It's just, that's my, that's myteam.
Okay, we fight and we have acatchy song, okay.
So that's why I love everton.
(12:07):
You know, blue jerseys, anthems.
We got the fighting.
We not I keep saying fightinghow scrappy we are, it's just
everything.
The stadium, the way goodisonpark is, it just does something
to me.
I love it.
Okay, I love everythingfootball club and the fight we
have these past three years isexhausting.
It is exhausting because we'refighting for our lives.
(12:30):
You know, we're trying to stayin the top league of england
football when manchester uniteddoesn't have to worry about that
.
They don't have to worry aboutthat.
They don't have to worry aboutthat at all.
All they got to do is just playand they'll finish seventh or
eighth.
I would love to take a seventhor eighth spot for Everton, but
no, we're not doing that.
We're fighting at the bottom ofthe league and we're in week
(12:52):
three and we have three lossesalready and it's rough.
It's rough to see.
I watch every game and we havelost some bad games.
Now, what was the expectation?
Was the expectation to winevery game.
No, it was not Okay.
Let's just be honest before westart.
(13:14):
I was not expecting to beatBrighton they beat us 3-0.
I was not expecting to beatTottenon they beat us 3-0.
I was not expecting to beatTottenham they beat us 4-0.
The only problem I have is howmany goals scored they scored in
two games.
We're down seven Now.
As the league progresses and asthe season goes, that matters,
(13:35):
because goals for, goals against, counts.
If we are tied with the record,if we both have, if us and
let's just keep using anotherteam, southampton have the same
identical record, but theirscores are 1-2-1, 2-0, and we're
getting blown out 3-0, 4-0,that counts, that counts.
(13:59):
So was I expecting us to beatBrighton?
No, was I expecting us to beatTottenham?
No.
Was I expecting us to beatBournemouth?
Yes, absolutely.
And watching the game andeverything and feeling high on
everything, we were up two tonothing in 86 minutes.
(14:21):
So we have 86 minutes plus.
So we have four minutes left, plus any injury time or time
left over, and we had sixminutes of extra time.
How did we lose an extra time?
We lost again.
(14:44):
We were up two to nothing.
We made substitutions because86, you know, around that time
we should be which 80.
It's the 86 minute.
We we're up to nothing.
There's no way a club's goingto score three goals in four
minutes, plus six minutes, plus10 minutes of extra time.
No Board of Minutes does theunthinkable and scores three
(15:08):
goals All in extra time.
We lose 3-2.
I have never been in disbeliefever before like that.
It was so bad that again, I wasin shock.
I sat there on the couch likewhat just happened, because
Everton football looked likeEverton football of the past.
(15:30):
That was not Everton of thepast two, three years.
We had shots, we had shots, wehad shots on goal, we had
someone dribbling, we hadsomeone that was making making
it a threat to score each andevery time we touched the ball.
We haven't had that in the pasttwo to three years and only to
lose in that extra time.
(15:51):
I was in shock because that'sthat.
That doesn't happen.
I sat there on the couch likeno, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
no, no, no, no, no.
Unbelievable.
So, yes, the first three games, everything's played.
We've lost all three games andagain, being part of the
(16:14):
Facebook club, the Facebookgroups and everything, people
are asking for the coach to besacked, to be fired from his job
, and it's too early for that.
It is too early for that.
We are three games in.
Yes, we have some injuries.
Yes, we didn't look good in twoof our three games.
(16:35):
But to sack somebody three gamesin when he's finally getting
the personnel that he wantsright and the personnel he's
getting are good, they're decent, they're not bad players, it
was just a bad situation thathappened.
I mean, let's just be honest, that was that was it, that was
the.
That was just a weird situationthat happened.
(16:57):
Who again scoring three goalsin extra time is crazy to me.
But we have injuries, but wehave the people to make to fix
this.
But to say the sack the managerthree games in is ridiculous.
Again, yes, we are in lastplace right now with no points
(17:21):
and sitting at the bottom of thetable.
It just looks bad.
But one win moves us to 13.
That's where we're at in thePremier League.
It's too early to panic.
Tell the rest of the Toffees tocalm down.
We're going to be fine.
Okay, just right now we're in abad spot, but there is light at
(17:47):
the end of the tunnel.
I believe we have not struggledthis much for this long to just
sack a coach and start all overagain.
We've done that way too manytimes in the past and that's why
we're in the situation we in.
We need to stick it.
We need to stick together, toffees, I'm talking to you guys
.
We need to stick together andride this out.
(18:07):
It's just three games in augustand they said in the broadcast
we haven't won a game in augustsince 2021.
That's another year.
Come on, let's get it together.
Let's focus on our team.
This is our last year atGoodison Park before we move to
the new stadium.
It's going to be a journey.
Just remember this.
When, the year when the books, when history books hit and
(18:28):
they're like, well, whathappened to our last year at
Goodison?
You know how much of a story isgoing to be when they say they
lost their first three games andall that stuff.
What I would hope for in thefuture is that they give the
substitution His name is BetoB-E-T-O Beto a big opportunity.
Our current striker, dominicCalvin Lewin, is how do I put it
(18:49):
?
Nicely, he's emotional.
He's an emotional striker.
I've never seen before Likehe'll go streaky.
He'll go like he's an emotionalstriker.
I've never seen before He'll gostreaky.
He'll go 10, 12, 15 gameswithout a goal and you're
supposed to be the main man witha goal, and then we put Beto in
with 20 minutes left in thegame.
What kind of strategy is that?
I do question Sam Dice'sstrategies, but at the end of
(19:12):
the day I trust the coachbecause you know that's what
we're supposed to do.
He sees them at practice andeverything.
I just wish Beto would get anopportunity he rightfully
deserves.
Why we sign somebody and don'tuse them.
I don't understand that.
So our next game is againstAston Villa.
I believe, and let's be honest, that's probably going to be
(19:34):
another L and we can't affordthat many L's.
But I believe, and let's behonest, that's probably going to
be another L and we can'tafford that many L's.
But yeah, that's going to be arough one.
September 14th 1230.
Everton plays Aston Villa, whois playing real good ball right
now.
So if we look at the standingsreal quick, there's nothing
changing at the top.
We got Manchester City at first.
(19:55):
Liverpool's right behind them.
Brighton Albion is three.
Arsenal is four.
That's right now.
They're the hottest teams inthe Premier League right now.
The way man City's playingright now they're playing lights
out killing everybody.
Liverpool's playing good, arsenal's playing good, aston
Villa's playing good.
Arsenal's playing good, astonVilla's playing good.
So we could be in trouble foruh, next um on the 14th.
(20:21):
But I'm a toffee through andthrough and we're gonna play.
We're gonna play them hard andI'm hoping for a tie.
I'm hoping to get some pointson the board.
We'll love a win.
We'll settle for a tie.
That's it, man.
That is all from the first showof the Red Toffees.
I hope you guys enjoyed it.
Hopefully we'll get Sean on theshow here pretty soon, but
(20:43):
that's it.
That's the end of the firstshow of the Red Toffee Show.
Hope you guys enjoyed it.
That's the end of the firstshow.
We'll see you hopefully nextweek with with Sean and myself.
Thank you for listening to theRed Toffee Show as the reds
(21:10):
throw a party.
Oh, oh.
