Text and Talk!

When Destini and I crafted our "Wheel of Luck" to teach our kids about money through chores, we never expected it to spin us into a whirlwind family debate. Our youngest's fluctuating fortunes on this homemade game led to a lively discussion about fairness and the values we're imparting. It's all fun and games until someone lands on Bankrupt—or is it? Destini's sharp questions and my own dubious role as Monopoly's banker add a personal flavor to this episode, offering a candid glimpse into the sometimes messy process of guiding our children through life's financial ups and downs.

Join us, Michael and Destini , as we unfold the consequences of risk and greed witnessed during family game night. Our eldest's cautious approach contrasts with her sibling's boldness, setting the stage for life lessons that extend far beyond the game board. We'll reflect on the weighty responsibility of teaching tough lessons, like dealing with loss and making smart choices, and how these shared moments can sculpt a young person's understanding of the world. Expect to be entertained, challenged, and maybe even a little inspired, as we navigate the delicate act of nurturing through play.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
You're listening to the WDYM, the what Do you Mean
podcast.
Now everyone gather around andlisten to one of Hamilton's best
podcasts.
No research to back this up.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
And welcome to another episode of the WDYM.
I'm your host, MichaelGillespie, and today's episode
is a impromptu episode, Guess, starring again Destiny Gillespie
.
Hey, is that the best intro youcan do?
You can't say, hey guys, what'sup?

(00:50):
So this one is an impromptu.
So you know how we got theReddit thing where we?
Am I the A-hole?
Right, we got, am I thebutthole for today?
So let me give you a littleback story of what happened
today.
Today I finally got my wheeland I ordered a wheel today and

(01:12):
you know, like the Price isRight wheel or anything like
that.
Take a listen, Oops, try again.
You hear that right.
So I bought a wheel today andfor a special treat or a special
way to give my kids anincentive to do an allowance, I
put prize money on the wheels.
So all day today my youngestone is just going out spinning

(01:36):
the wheel.
She's just going yay, yay.
Just playing with the wheel.
I've always been told like youcan't play with house money,
right, you don't pose a touchthing that ain't going to help
you.
So we play today and she plays, and she ends up in the positive
the first time.
So the second time she playsshe loses money.

(01:59):
In fact, she goes into thenegative.
She goes into the negative andthen storms off to a room upset.
So I'm asking well, that's myopinion.
Well, let me first off, let meget the opinion of the wifey
first, and then I will bounceoff that.
So, destiny, am I the butthole?
Am I the butthole for playingfor one, playing the wheel game

(02:26):
with Amelia and two?
Who's in the wrong on this one?
Go ahead.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Can you hear me?

Speaker 2 (02:33):
We can hear you.
We go ahead and hear each other.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Ah what.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
I'm listening.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
I don't know if she fully understand the second part
.
So the first round was a dollara spend no wrong Half of your.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Did you see that she was already wrong?

Speaker 3 (02:49):
the first thing said no, no, it was three dollars for
three spins.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
You just said one dollar, so this is recorded.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
She said one dollar a spin.
There was three spins.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Okay so same thing, just a different way.
I said it.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Basically.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
So she had three spins and she was up four
dollars, so she had 11 dollarsCorrect, and then she wanted to
do it again.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Right now, let me stop you, because you only put a
spin this every time you getallowance and this is the first
time where you've done this.
So I explained to her look, ifyou're wanting to spin again,
you're gonna have to double theentry fee.
So now, the three dollars isnow turned into six dollars.
She, as far as my knowledge she, shook her head.
She was aware of it.
Yes, she was Correct.

(03:30):
I guess what do you mean youguessed you were right there.
You see that she's right therein the same room.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
but she's saying I guess Well, I had to ask you to
repeat it to make sure sheunderstood, but that was after.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
I repeated it, she understood Okay, okay.
So anyway, she rolls again andshe gets, because there's
negatives on the, there'snegatives on the, which is like
a little fortune you can lose aturn, go bankrupt, anyways.
So she landed on negative, negative, negative each time, to
a point where she owed the bank, which is the juicy box.

(04:06):
She put money in the juicy boxbecause there's a thing on the
wheel that says juicy box.
You get whatever's money in thejuicy box.
Whenever you lose money, itgoes in the juicy box.
So therefore, when someone getsthe juicy box, they get all the
money.
What?

Speaker 3 (04:22):
It's a juicy fruit box.
That's what it sounds weirdsaying.
Whoa, whoa, remember, this is a.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
G show, I know, but you're like a juicy box.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
juicy box, juicy, it's a juicy fruit box.
Continue.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
OK so?

Speaker 2 (04:37):
So gosh the.
Anytime you lose money, it's inthe juicy box, right?
So juicy fruit box.
I'm not going to come up with anew name for that, because you
know, you know this ain't funny.
So so back to the originalquestion Am I the butthole for?

Speaker 3 (05:01):
For her.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
I didn't take all her money.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
But then you spend it and you win.
Ok, look every time we play agame, Michael always wins.
Ok if it's for like $20 or $50,he wins majority of the time.
So he spends and gets $10 giftcard and then he spends again
and you get what?
Ten dollars.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
And then you spend again and you get what?

Speaker 2 (05:24):
I don't know.
I just came out in the positivepositive.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
OK, so here's my thing.
Right, I'm an, I'm an, I watchthings, I observe things.
They're spending their spendingon the right, it's on the right
side, right, and I see thatthey're losing.
What does a person who isobservant do?
Well, I'm not spending right,I'm spending on the left.
I spend left and I win.
Ok, I am observing.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
I'm sorry, I didn't want to go first.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
And that's also reason why I don't want to go
first.
Right, I am observing.
I need to watch what you guysare doing.
So therefore, if they'respending right and keep losing,
I'm going to spend left andstart winning.
What's wrong with that?
Nothing, ok.
So what other games do I win in?

Speaker 3 (06:03):
Monopoly Mario Kart.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
So here's something that you may not know you ready,
when I'm the banker, I stillhave myself $20.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
You better not.
You will never be the bankeragain.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Every time you're not looking, $20.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Really no.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
I'm kidding.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
You try to try to take my money and put it up
under the board, hey come on,hey, if you're not cheating,
you're not trying.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
So back to the original question Am I the
butthole for this situation?

Speaker 3 (06:36):
A little bit what you took all my baby's money Wait a
minute, and now she doesn'thave any money for the book fair
.
Wait a minute, she has $10 andshe can't even buy one book.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
That's crazy.
I didn't tell her to doubledown.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Well, you should have stopped and not let her do it
again.
I, because you told her we'renot doing this again.
It's one time you get threespins, that's it.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
OK.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
So she convinced you to do it again.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
She didn't convince you, says she wanted to do it
again.
This is listen.
In the grand scheme of things, this is a life lesson to not be
greedy and be gracious for whatyou got.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
She was just trying to get some more money to buy
another.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Isn't that why we all go to the to the casino?
When someone went to the casino, I won.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
You won.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Right, you remember that.
I know you won and you up herebragging and and got the little
video that you said oh, youdidn't brag, but you know you,
you're whoo whoo.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Well, I won.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
OK Well.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
OK, I still have it to see.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Is that not bragging?
That is clearly bragging in mybook.
Sorry, I'm injured, so I am the, I'm the partial but, but no,
but that's the whole topic ofthis one, Stopped and said nope,
one round, like I said.
So I think this is a lifelesson hey look, I need, I'm
ahead.
It's like when we go to thecasino I'm ahead.

(08:05):
Right now, I'm a pocket thisahead money and play with my
loose money.
That I wanted to see.
No, and if I lose it all, ohwell, because I'm still got my
base money.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Maybe you should explain that to her first.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
No, I don't, I did.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
If, if you lose, then you might not have any money.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
But was she all on the wheel practicing for hours?

Speaker 3 (08:25):
in the negative, wanted to win again.
Ok Well, guess what?
She was trying to get some moremoney for the book fair.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
Uh-huh.
Well, I'm sorry, but she lost.
It ain't my fault, not nice,I'm laughing because I knew this
would happen.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
And you had to do no in the back of my head when she
wanted to play again.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
you run the risk of losing this money.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
You should have told her that.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Well, she should have known that.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
Like, do you understand With you doing this?
It's gonna cost you $6.
And you have $11, so then youwill only have $5.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
But she has three spins.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
But you have three spins.
You could get more money or youcould be broke and let me.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Let me mind you that there is plus.
There's positives on here too.
There's a $10 positive, there'sa $2 positive, there's a $5
positive, there's the JuicyFruit Box, there's gift cards on
here, and what else?
There's something else.
Oh, the mystery money.
The mystery money is you selectthe mystery money, right.
But here's the idea behind it.

(09:25):
I put numbers one through 12down and I put a random number,
zero through 11.
So you pick 12, and 11 might beunder 12.
You get $11.
That is fair, and on top of ityou can get the Juicy Fruit Box.
Good job.
So I don't think I'm thebutthole for this.

(09:47):
Give me if you have an opinionon this.
Give me an email atthewdympodcastgmailcom.
Again, that'sthewdympodcastgmailcom Cause I
don't think I'm the butthole forthis, but I'm gonna get her
take on it right now.
Okay, part two of the.
What do I call it.

(10:10):
What do I call it?
Oh, am I the butthole for today?
Okay, so, to recap, you playeda game and I have.
Oh, first off, let me do that.
First.
We got Amelia Gillespie to gether side of the story.
Amelia, how you doing.

(10:30):
Great, Great, you hear that.
Okay, All right.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
Why am I?

Speaker 2 (10:36):
here, okay.
So, to recap, we played thegame, the wheel, what'd you call
it?
The wheel of love.
I guess someone wasn't verylucky today.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
So let's, let's go over thething today, right?
Number one, you played how manytimes?
Six, no, okay, two times.
Cause each turn you get threeturns, right, okay, you got to

(10:59):
speak up, okay, so you playedthe first time.
And where were you?
Where you ahead, where you upon money?
Okay, okay.
So why did you play a secondtime?
Because I have a book fair soonand I don't have enough money to
get the books I want, okay, soI wanted to double my chances?

(11:20):
Okay, so did I explain to you?
If you played again, you got topay double.
Yeah, did you understand that?
Yeah, okay.
So this further proves that one, I'm not the butthole for
letting them try this.
And number two, that your mamaor your little guardian see
what's trying to protect you andmaybe she's like maybe you

(11:41):
didn't understand, but clearlyyou did.
Right, clear, yeah, you got tospeak up, cause you want to make
, you want to make podcastepisodes, and now you can't
speak up, okay.
So, in the grand scheme ofthings, who was the butthole?
You know what?
I'm going to edit that out.
I'm going to edit that out, ladies and gentlemen, cause that

(12:02):
was not the butthole.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Did you think you were going to win?

Speaker 4 (12:08):
Well, no, no, yeah, but dad has a hundred freaking
five dollars, okay.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
So again, try to explain this in a normal voice.
Why did you?
You thought you thought youwere going to win, right?
Yeah, that's why you played asecond time.
So if we do this again, willyou do it a second time when
you're up?
No, okay.
So, unless you're like super up, right, like you went $10 and

(12:36):
keep winning $10 or somethinglike that.
So I don't think I'm on thebutthole for this, but you think
I am.
That's not nice.
That's not nice.
Well, you asked.
Well, yeah, I'm being honest, yes, and you're entitled to your
opinion, but I think you'rewrong in this situation, because
you got to understand there'sconsequences to all our actions.

(12:57):
If you gamble, you run a chanceof winning and losing, right,
but if you win, it's a goodthing, right?
Hello, yes, okay, okay.
With that being said, Iappreciate it.
No, we're done.
I just wanted to get youropinion on it, that's all.
This was gonna be the episode.
This is gonna be the episodetitled.

(13:20):
Am I the Butthole for lettingyou play on the Wheel of Luck?
She's looking at me like stoneface because she lost.
Yo, if you're done, you canleave.

Speaker 4 (13:33):
Is there any other surprises?

Speaker 2 (13:36):
As far as what?
So I can play again and getmore money.
If you want to play, you couldspend.
You could spend, if you want topay, three dollars if you want
to pay, you see that.
See, this is a life lesson likethis is one of this is this is

(13:56):
the things that a parent must do.
I mean, I thought that here'sanother thing these kids, my
kids I should say my Apologize,my kids get allowance.
I didn't get allowance when Iwas kid and that's.
Did you get allowance?
No, no.
So these are just win-winsituations, right?
So For her to have this happenat 10, it's kind of a blessing

(14:21):
in disguise, because you got.
You got to learn not to begreedy.
Prime example my oldest shejust first you didn't even want
to play, then she decided toplay.
So let's get her opinion onthis, okay.
So the third and hopefullyfinal part of this is that my
oldest daughter, emma, shedecided to play too.
Now, first she was reluctant toplay.

(14:42):
Why did you want to play atfirst?

Speaker 4 (14:44):
because mom was all uh, because I was straightening
my hair.
So I decided that I was gonnawait, because I and then
everybody was taking foreverlike no, oh, let's go, yeah,
let's go, like just shut up.
So I decided not to play andfinish my hair first.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Okay, so old miss straight hair don't care, they
was doing her hair and Ameliawent, then Mom went, then I went
and then you decided to playand you followed the same rules
as Amelia.
You came in, you put your threedollars down and what happened?
14, and what do you normallyget?
12.

(15:20):
Oh so she came out on a profit, right?
So why didn't you play again?

Speaker 4 (15:26):
Because I'm not gonna test my luck like that.

Speaker 2 (15:30):
Boom.
Oh wait, I got a sound for that.

Speaker 4 (15:33):
With two more dollars .

Speaker 2 (15:34):
That's crazy.
Wow.
She said yo, I'm up to, I'mgonna hold on to these two
dollars on top of my allowance.
Now she could have gambled, putthe six in and get it, but
she's decided to stop.
So I guess my life lessons aregetting reaching half the half

(15:58):
the children Emma's older.
Too.
Okay, but how many times weplayed games before and and
we've gotten well, okay, also, sometimes you kill, okay,
whatever about life lessons andstuff.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
but like, sometimes you know you got to take risks,
so that was her risk that shetook wait, hold on.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
That's crazy Easy, oh my god.
Anyway, that's another episodefor another time.
But uh, in conclusion, we'vejust I've discovered that I'm
not the butthole for thissituation and when allowance,
allowance time comes around nexttime, maybe, just maybe, she
will learn less.
I don't think I'm the bad guyin this situation.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
Why is this getting so deep?

Speaker 2 (16:46):
I mean, I just, I'm just, you know, initially, when
she got upset and then after shelooked after a million loss,
she went storm straight upstairs.

Speaker 4 (16:53):
Well, that's how everybody naturally react.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
I mean just take, you know, you take your elbows, you
know okay.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Well, she's got to learn she's dead.
Oh my god, I want to push thatbutton one more time.
Push it.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
No, no.
So exactly that's the thing yougot to.
These are life lessons.
You gotta learn and understand.
So, with that being said, Idon't know what time or at two
minutes, so I'm gonna end thatepisode on here, because that's
the life lesson today.
Ladies and gentlemen, learnwhen was it learn?
When to hold on?

Speaker 4 (17:22):
I like you're so funny.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
Thank you.
I thought that would be a goodway to do an episode For the
podcast, cuz I got otherepisodes to do and I thought
it's a good lesson for anybodyto learn here on the WD why, as
always, I'm your host, michaelGillespie.
I hope everybody's doing good,hope everybody's doing well.

(17:44):
I hope everybody takes care ofeach other and themselves.
