Jackie Chan redefined action cinema with 1985's Police Story, a film that transcends mere entertainment to become a masterclass in physical performance and stunt work. As Inspector Ka-Kui, he delivers a perfect blend of comedy and death-defying action that demonstrates why he remains unmatched in martial arts filmmaking.

Police Story doesn't just entertain – it represents a filmmaking philosophy where authenticity trumps everything. Modern viewers accustomed to CGI and safety wires will be astonished by the raw commitment on display. Every punch, kick, and fall reverberates with the knowledge that real bodies are in motion, taking real risks. Chan's end-credit bloopers showing the injuries sustained during filming have become a signature, reminding us of the human cost behind the spectacle.

Ready to witness action filmmaking at its purest? Watch Police Story and discover why Jackie Chan is revered not just as a star, but as a pioneering artist who forever changed how action sequences could be filmed, performed, and experienced.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hello and welcome to the we Recommend podcast.
This is a movie podcast whereevery week we recommend a movie
for you to watch and then comeback here and listen to us
discuss.
I'm Jesse and I'm Jason.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Don't be a cop if you want to live to be a 100.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
You want this line on the recruitment poster, because
this week we recommend PoliceStory Baby story baby police
story baby yeah, police story,baby.
It's my favorite version ofthis movie kung fu babies.

(00:36):
Jason, you've never seen this.
No, is it not amazing?
I thought it was genuinely agood movie it's thoroughly a
good movie.
It's thoroughly a good movie.
It's funny, the action isawesome.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
I like, even though it's kind of old, like the
comedy was pretty good, it wasgreat.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Jackie Chan's one of the funniest actors we've ever
had, and we do not appreciatehim enough.
You know everybody loves him,but it's you never.
Every time you think of JackieChan you're like oh yeah, he
makes a silly rush hour movieRight when.
It's like cool, but it's likefunny and like early 2000,.
It's like, hey, this guy's beenfunny since the 70s, baby.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Is that when this movie was made?

Speaker 1 (01:14):
This was 1984.
Nice, yeah, eighty four.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
It was better than a lot of movies from that era.
Yeah, it was better than a lotof movies from that era.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Yeah, and it's wild to think that like I think they
were kind of making betteraction movies overseas in the
80s than they were over here, because there's still like a
realism to this movie, versus ifyou watch like Tango and Cash
and like even though Point Breakwas nineties, it's just like

(01:45):
okay, this is silly.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
And there's this over here, like yeah, we're just
making fun police story moviesand things like that Immediately
thought of point break wheneverhe was in the beginning action
scene, when he he always firesup in the air, yeah Right.
Instead of shooting into abunch of people like do a point
break, what?

Speaker 1 (02:07):
do you mean that's totally normal?
No, that's what you should bedoing.
We have to catch the bad guysin America.
But he didn't catch them.
Yeah, and I think it's one ofthose things that when you watch
this movie, when you think ofyou know kung fu movies or, like
you know, mixed martial, martial arts movies and things,

(02:29):
you always think, oh, back inthe day, back way back when you
know, when we didn't really evenhave cars or anything.
People were just running aroundchopping each other and stuff
like that.
You know.
When you think of like foreignyou know martial arts movies or
kung fu movies and things likethat, you always think of like
you know, like Enter the Dragonor whatever you know like Enter
the Dragon or whatever you knowlike old timey things.
So you never really think aboutlike, oh yeah, they were
probably using the same type ofmoves like in the, for you know,

(02:53):
the policemen and stuff likethat's what is going to be their
hand to hand combat.
So it's like very interestingto see in a movie like, oh yeah,
they still might fight likethat.
I don't know if they do, ofcourse.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Yeah, I have no idea but it's fun to see in a movie.
I wonder if, if it was like inChina, like Japan, where they
don't allow people to haveweapons like guns.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Only the police are allowed to have guns.
Yeah, like the military.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
So I don't know.
Yeah, I don't know, but it'slike super.
Is this kind of fun to see alittle drug, you know?
Movie.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
A little drug movie.
A little drug movie.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Yeah, so what do you think about the way like Jackie
Chan fights, Is it not?
It is wild how I don't knowflawless it looks, but also, at
the same time, it looks like hehas no idea what it's about to
happen.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
It's so seamless.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Everything he does and it's fun at the end of the
credits when you see him justlike the pencil on the desk and
he kicks it with his foot and hetries to catch it while he's
got all these phones In themovie.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
It's just like that was probably first try but you
know he's had to do it like 15times probably try, but you know
he's had to do it like 15 timesprobably.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
But he's because he's so charismatic and, yeah,
smooth but also hilarious at thesame time it's, and I think
it's also when they fight theyhave that like it's so spastic,
but then when they're doing themoves it's so smooth.
It's.
It's wild to watch.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
I love how he because he, because he'll go from one
guy and then like something, like the girl's getting taken,
so he'd jump over here, kick himin the face, then jump back
over here and kick that otherguy in the face, yeah, and you
see all the bad guys going, likewhere the hell is he going?

Speaker 1 (04:35):
It's just, and I guess it's also because they're
kind of wearing suits whenthey're fighting, so it's even
it kind of adds to the chaos, like just visually kind of adds
to the chaos, like just visually.
But man, there's something sofun about his fighting style and
like just the his fights ingeneral and they're so creative.
Yeah, it is wild, just likewith him, with like the uh, the
clothes hanger thing, like youknow in the department store.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
They're trying to hit him with bats.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
He's just like spinning it around and it's like
and he takes the umbrella offthat one dude, yeah, it's like
this man is amazing, this iswild and of course, it's always
fun to learn that he got so hurtduring every single movie he's
ever filmed, essentially Becauseyou know, if he does something
and it missed, the actual thinghits him in the head.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
That was one of my favorite parts of Rush Hour,
because they do the same theyshow the bloopers at the end.
Yeah, it's the best everyJackie Chan movie does.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
It's amazing, yeah it's like we need to bring that
back, like the John Wick moviesneeded this, just like seeing
Keanu Reeves just accidentallyhit himself in the head with a
gun.
It'll, of course, take you outof the movie, but who cares
right?

Speaker 2 (05:39):
it's just a movie.
Yeah, I've done.
I've hit myself with those.
When I was a kid, I shot.
I was squirrel hunting and Ishot, but the gun was so small I
couldn't hold it in my shoulder, so I held it up in front of my
face and it just hit me rightin the eye, gave me a black eye,
wow, great job, that's reallysmart.
It seemed like it might havehurt a little bit.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
So outside of like Rush Hour, do you have any Chan
movies or even just like kung fumovies or kind of martial arts
movies?

Speaker 2 (06:05):
yeah, I can't really think of any of them, right now
but, have you ever seen Legendof the Drunken Master?
No, but I'd like to.
I've seen bits and pieces of itwell, you've seen Ip man yeah,
ip man or whatever.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
I still have to watch that.
Those are really fun, and somefun ones is like Kung Fu Hustle
Enter the Dragon.
That's a good one.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
I used to own the entire but like library of Bruce
Lee movies, like on VHS, Inever really watched a lot of
Bruce Lee movies I did when Iwas a kid.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
I at least watched Enter the Dragon.
That's the main one I remember.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
I mean they're not all great, it's just kind of
cool Of course you got theclassics like Kung Pao, kung Fu
Hustle.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
You seen Kung Fu Hustle?

Speaker 2 (06:51):
I don't think so.
I've seen bits and pieces ofKung Pao.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
You have to watch Kung Fu Hustle because it's very
silly but it's so good.
And then, probably one of myfavorites is Crouching Tiger,
hidden Dragon.
Oh yeah, that movie isbeautiful in every way, with the
tree jumping Visually.
Oh yeah, the action, thestory's even great Ninja Warrior
, or what was it Ninja Assassinyeah.
It was just wild.
I haven't seen that one, butit's so crazy, it's insane.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Yeah, it's so gory and stupid, stupid, oh god, oh
man, that's fun yeah, because,uh, they actually jackie chan
was actually in enter the dragon.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
He was just like a thug in prison though, um, but
yeah, he, like jackie chan'sbeen working since 1962.
He was a juvenile back thenwhen he was working, but he's
been around forever and he'sstill doing movies I haven't
seen any of his newer movies.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
He's way too old.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
No, let's see what was his last.
Well, he's going to be in thenew.
They're doing a new Kung Fu orKarate Kid or whatever.
I guess that's already maybecome out.
I don't know who even wants to,but he tried to make his
comeback.
What was that movie?
I think he directed it himselfthe Foreigner in 2017.
Apparently, it was supposed tobe really good.
I don't see it, but yeah, so hewas quite older then, but he

(08:07):
still has it.
God dang it.
Yeah.
Well, let's hop into some ofthe fun facts.
So the reason that Police Storyhad such a plain name was
because every time Jackie Chanstarted a new project in Hong
Kong, everyone else followed.
For example, when DrunkenMaster 2 came out, every
filmmaker started making drunkenboxing movies.

(08:28):
Oh great, with Police Story, noone knew what to expect except
a police movie, and at that timein Hong Kong cinema, no one had
ever made a kung fu policemovie before Nice.
Yeah.
So essentially, anytime he wasmaking a movie, some American
audiences or somebody's likeit's time to do exactly what
Jackie Chan's doing.
It's funny that that washappening then, because whenever

(08:49):
, like movies that come out now, there's always like Asylum.
Have you ever heard of AsylumProductions, I don't know.
They essentially would makeextremely low budget sci-fi
movies based off like PacificRim had the movie Atlantic Rim.
It's just really shitty cgi.
It's like worse, almost worsethan sci-fi, original sci-fi

(09:10):
movies.
Uh, cgi like sharknado andstuff.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
It's even worse than that type of cgi is like
cartoons with yeah, it's likewhen deep impact came out, um,
fucking dante's peak was rightbehind it, yeah, or volcano you
had armageddon and uh, whatever, that other one that came out
right right with it, and a lotof those things that was deep
impact.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
A lot of those things were came out at the same time
and a lot of that was is thatone studio would hear that, I
think with deep impact.
They had that idea and thestudio, like refused it.
And another studio said well,we're doing Armageddon.
And they're like, oh shit, wehave to do Deep Impact quick,
it's that type of thing.
But, like with Asylum, the wholepoint of it was to confuse

(09:55):
grandmas and parents.
So when their kid asked forsomething like Pacific Rim,
they'd go and be like, wait, what was the name?
Atlantic Rim?
Oh, let's buy it for them.
They'd go and be like, wait, what was the name Atlantic Rim?
Oh, let's buy it for them.
And then they'd get it andtheir kids hate them for the
rest of their lives, sneaky ashell, because they also did like
Transformers, movies like that, and so it's kind of funny that
even back in the day people werestill trying to do that shit
trying to confuse people.
Yeah, it's so funny, and then Ionly got really one more fact.

(10:21):
So this is about the amazingstunt at the end that they show
three times in a row.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
The pool, thing?
Oh, the pool where he throwsthe woman off the building.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
No, where he like grabs onto that pole with all
those things.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Oh, the pole, I thought you said pool, yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
Let's hear about how injured he got.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Oh yes.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
So in an interview that's included with the film's
Criterion release, Jackie Chanestimates that his crew had
already been shooting in themall for several months by the
time they got to the pole stunt.
The police story production wasunder some degree of pressure
from the mall to wrap up.
By the time the pole stunt wasset up, the sun had begun to
rise because they were filmingat night in the mall.

(10:59):
For everything, there was goingto be a lot of broken glass to
clean up before the mall openedin the morning.
While Chan is somewhat infamousfor taking the time to get
stunts right, in this instancethere was a real sense of
urgency.
Chan and his team did notrehearse the stunt and, as if
the stakes weren't high enough, there were no wires, crash mats
or safety nets to catch him.

(11:20):
If Chan missed the pole, therewould be nothing to catch him or
break his fall.
The original plan was to powerthe lights with low-voltage car
batteries, but as theydiscovered on the day, the car
battery just wasn't able topower the whole structure, so
they plugged the lights into thesockets.
This meant that the voltage ofthe building itself could
potentially electrocute Chan.
To assure Chan's understandableconcern, the tech crew assured

(11:45):
him that if anything went wrongthey would simply cut the power.
Chan perched on the guardrailsix floors above his final
destination, a prop kioskshielded by sugar glass, which
is breakable glass.
He told the crew that he wouldgive a signal before initiating
the stunt.
Essentially said, when I nod,I'm going.
Chan was, by his own admission, rather scared.
A member of the JC stunt teamsnuck a good luck totem into

(12:10):
Chan's pocket during a hug, asChan tells it.
A crew member mistook a nervousneck motion for the go signal.
Someone shouted rolling and thedeathly quiet atrium filled
with the motors of all 12high-speed cameras.
That amount of cameras coveragewas exceptional at this time,
especially within Chan's ownfilmography, but they only had
one shot at it and they only had400 feet of film.
Knowing this, Chan let out ascream and jumped.

(12:31):
That was the scream he said.
By Chan's estimate, thedistance from the guardrail to
the pole was about 8 feet, whichhe cleared without a running,
start from an unstable crouchingposition During the descent.
The string lights did notelectrocute Chan, but they did
have a different, unforeseeneffect.
Incandescent light bulbs arehot to the touch.
They can even ignite paper andcertain kinds of cloth with

(12:51):
direct contact.
The heat, coupled with thefriction of the descent,
resulted in the second degreeburns on Chan's palms Fucking A.
The instant Chan hits the floor, he gets up and starts fighting
.
This is all the more impressiveconsidering, as Chan's relays
in his autobiography, the impactof the fall dislocated his

(13:12):
pelvis and caused a back injurythat could have been paralyzing.
As Chan tells it, hisadrenaline was so high the
stuntman that the stuntman hewails on had to tell him to stop
.
They wrapped the chute and hada celebratory beer at 6 in the
morning.
Chan then made his way to Heartof the Dragon set, where he
promptly crashed.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
God damn, I thought you were going to say he went to
the hospital.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
No, where he should have gone, he just was like I
got another movie I have to doJesus, yeah.
And so, other than just theburns on his hand, jackie Chan
injured his seventh and eighthvertebrae and dislocated his
pelvis on the pole slide when hecrashed into the kiosk.
And so they.
When they were using the sugarglass, they had to make it twice
as thick.
They made it twice as thick soit looked like real glass, which

(13:56):
created a bunch of injuries onit.
And the girl that plays Selena, she did all her own stunts and
she like just doing a simpleroll rolling over a table, she
like bruised her pelvis andstuff like that.
So, um, fun thing about jackiechan movies is they look great.
Uh, the worst part about jackiechan movies is everybody always
gets hurt it's gonna beimpossible to ensure.

(14:20):
Yeah, I mean it's wild, but theyjust, they just like you're
seeing the uh, the video ofjackie chan watching.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
He's like showing his granddaughter his movies, or
like scenes from his movies andshe looks over to him.
She's like grandpa.

Speaker 1 (14:33):
You're awesome yeah, that's so sweet, you're so cool.
How do you do this?

Speaker 2 (14:39):
yeah, she's like I can't believe you did that yeah,
I mean, it's just like I.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
I mean it's kind of, you know, when you think about
growing up, especially at thetime we did, you know, we
watched Jackie Chan movies andhe's kind of our first like
human superhero we actually saw,you know.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
Yeah, yeah, just because I mean, there was like
Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
Yeah, but even then, like he didn't even do all of
his stunts, he would do thefights, but you know you
wouldn't see Jean-Claude VanDamme jumping off of like
six-story things, unless with nopadding or anything.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
Well, nobody knew that back then.
We didn't, yeah, of course.
But it's just watching thebloopers.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
It's kind of just crazy what he was literally
doing just to entertain us.
You got to respect it.
It's like those horses.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
I don't like diving.
Jackie Chan should have teamedup with a horse.
Yeah Kung.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
Fu, kung Fu horse.
I'd watch that every day of mylife and then that horse lives
and then they could fight inKong Pal the cows that fight in
that movie.
Oh man, I have to watch that.
Yeah, you have to watch it.
I can't believe.
I watched that a lot as a child.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
I started it, I was like this is stupid and I turned
it off.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Wow, that seems so.
Unlike you.
It was too stupid.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
It's so up your alley , bro maybe I just didn't get it
at the time maybe we'll have todo like a commentary over it,
like just watch it.
I remember them saying like wetrained him wrong to be, just to
be funny yeah, and so what thatmovie is is so there's actual,

(16:23):
so there's.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
They take scenes from actual old kung fu movies and
they just put him in it, that'sand that's kind of what they're
doing and they're overdubbing alot of the actors from the old
movies.
Like there's this one girl init.
Every time he talks to youshe's like I can't even do it.
It's so ridiculous.
He's got a tongue that talks.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
It's great, my mind will be much more open now.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
Yeah, you know, just you know if you're just having a
nice relaxing night so, yeah, Ithink we should hop into the
plot and while we're goingthrough the plot, make sure you
you think about hey, what's thepoint of this movie and what
hurt the most?

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Yeah, and I think it's.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
You know, it's just a basic movie, so I think the
point is going to be toentertain, but think about what,
on a deeper level, this moviecould be about.
Okay, yeah, all right, jason, you ready to get into police
story?
Oh yeah, hell, yeah, hell, yeah, hell yeah.
I apologize for how I'm goingto pronounce the names.
I'm so sorry.
I did not look up how to do itbeforehand.
I regret it.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
And we're just using AI.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
Yes, so the Royal Hong Kong Police Force is
planning a major undercoversting to arrest crime lord Chu
Dao.
They call it Operation BoarHunt and I love during this part
, during this whole scene.
It's got this like just fuckingguitar, Just like let's go.
And it's so good compared tothe rest of the movie, the score

(17:48):
where it's like do-do-do-do-do.
So John Coe is Dow's right handman, Inspector Chan Kai Kui, or
Kevin Chan as they also call him, which I won't be calling.
Yeah, there we go, I will justbe calling him.
Chan is part of the operationalongside with other undercover
officers stationed in ashantytown.

(18:08):
It's like just made out.
It looks like just plywood andjust very thin.
Did they build the shantytown?
I would hope so, because it'sno longer there.
The entire shantytown isblocked off once Chan and his
honorage enter the area, orChudo, I mean, enters the area

(18:29):
and completes a drug deal to buydrugs from his supplier.
However, the criminals spot theofficers from the earpiece worn
by them.
They got to get betterearpieces, you know.

Speaker 2 (18:37):
This is A4, man.

Speaker 1 (18:38):
Yeah, I know this is probably top of the line.
This is like how about this?
We just don't wear them thenand just be like, let's all just
know when to go.
Okay, give us away immediately.
Um, then we see that chow dow, chow does.
Um, girlfriend selena is withthem and she, holy shit, this is
hard to do man's cool.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Do they just let anybody go on these police
things?
Yeah, without police training.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
Well, Selena's there, for you know, with the criminal
essentially, and she's justtold to stay in the car.
And then, and then you know, the police show up and then
Jackie Chan grabs Selena andchains her to the steering wheel
, but first she like slaps himand she's like and spits in his
face.
Yeah, he slaps her and it'slike I'm going to spit too to

(19:29):
the side of you, and then the.
But then everybody starts tonotice that all the wires are
there and then a shootout ensuesbetween the two groups.
Several cops are scared of theintense gunfire.
One guy shoots a mirror andJackie Chan helps, chan helps
many of them.
Men remain calm and mount aresistance to the goons.
Got the one guy that was shotthe mirror.
He like shoots a guy and justpees himself.
Yeah, that's the guy that willlater be known as inspector man

(19:53):
um.
And then you got civilians.
They're either fleeing the townor caught in the crossfire.
Uh, jackie chan persists in hischase.
The criminals are trappedbecause of the roads being
blocked, so they just decide toblow through the shantytown with
.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
Jackie Chan following .

Speaker 1 (20:07):
They all make it down to the bottom and Chan
eventually following on foot asthe drug lord attempts to escape
in a double-decker bus.
How great is the scene, thoughit was really fun when he's
going down through there.
How dangerous is the scene, though it was really fun when
he's going down through there.
How dangerous is that.
So many people got hurt duringthat scene.
Oh yeah, there's people standingon roofs of like where the cars
are coming through the building.

(20:28):
I'm sure lots of people died.
I remember when I first sawthis I was like, oh, this is how
we're opening the movie.
What's going to happen later inthe movie?
But what a great idea.
They're gonna happen later inthe movie, but what a great idea
.
They're just like hey, there'sthis town made of very thin
plywood.
What if we made of sticks?
What if we drove three carsthrough it?
But what a great way to getaway.

(20:50):
You know it's so fun.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
This is a great idea.
I love that they have doubledecker buses yeah I didn't know
they had those.

Speaker 1 (20:58):
Yes, and the fun does not end here Because Chan
manages to get in front of thebus by hopping on the back,
riding on the side with anumbrella, even fighting men
while cars are passing by.
He's running on top of the cars.
He gets knocked down off thebus, though.
He runs on foot to cut throughall the winding roads and blocks
the path with a civilian's carand his revolver.

(21:20):
He fires his revolver, bringingit to a halt by threatening to
shoot the driver with hisservice revolver.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
The other guy had a knife to the driver's throat.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
Yeah yeah.
The criminal tries to bribeChan with his briefcase of money
to let him go, but Chan refuses.
I love when the bus comes to astop.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
And everybody flies out the window.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
That's not how the stunt was supposed to go.
It looks great, but they weresupposed to stop and they were
supposed to fly onto the car tobreak their fall, but they all
went straight to the ground.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
Yeah, he stopped too soon probably.

Speaker 1 (21:51):
Well, the air brakes were better than they thought
they were.
Oh yeah, as they were gettingready to jump out, the bus
stopped too soon and they allfell on the ground I did like
how, when people were scramblingto get away, they're just
jumping out windows.
Yeah, they're like, let's getout of here but what a fantastic
way to open the movie that wasso fun it's so great.
It's just like ah, I wish Iwatched this as a kid, because I

(22:13):
kind of watched it as an adultand I was like man.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
As a kid I would be trying this stuff man, he does
like the cool reload with hisrevolver.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
Yeah that revolver will have a big story like be
part of the story later.
So later Chan is reprimanded bySuperintendent Raymond Lee for
letting the operation get out ofhand, but subsequently
presented to the media as amodel police officer.
To please the police brass, chan is asked to star in many
promotional ad campaigns to helphim recruit for the police

(22:44):
force, posing on a motorcycle.
It's like open your eyes.

Speaker 2 (22:48):
Open some really wide Open your mouth.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Wider, wider, and he's like what do you mean?
And he's like just act normal, just be yourself Busting up
someone doing drugs and on aboat.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
Yeah, that was great.
What's that boat one?
He heads off the guy smokingopium or something.
Yeah, something like that.

Speaker 1 (23:07):
And then him on the boat with the little wife jacket
.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
The life jacket and the horn, the little sailor hat
and everything.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
It's like what so?
And on his next assignment isto protect Chowdhury's secretary
, selina Fong, who is pressuredto testify in court about Dao's
illegal activities.
I love this part because theythey bring in Chan and he's just

(23:33):
like they're like, all right, you're going to do it.
He's like, can someone else doit?
And they're like no Great.
That's why I was like, oh, thisjust going to be a really funny
movie.
Actually, in reality, lee hadarranged this so he could keep
an eye on selena through chan.
As per the law, lee was withinhis rights to assign protection
to prosecution witness.
Selena chan is paid 30 a day.

(23:55):
The rate has never been raised, apparently, so it's very low
for like just protecting someoneand only getting $30 for the
assignment.
It's like bring your own walletyeah, bring your own wallet,
because your only bonus is $30.
Chan's senior inspector, uncleBill, superintendent Lee, play a
very smart game.
He grants bail only to Selenaand insists that she talks to

(24:17):
him alone, without the lawyerChaeyoung, who had come to bail.
Selena Lee's plan is to givethe impression that Selena has
agreed to cooperate with thepolice in exchange for their
dropping all charges against her, which is great.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
Yeah, I thought that was really smart.

Speaker 1 (24:32):
Because the lawyer leaves and they all just start
getting up just looking out thewindow just like, yeah, we got
nothing to do here, just tryingto make her so confused that
whenever she leaves and they'relike what did they say?
Like nothing, really.
I didn't say anything andthey're all like, well, you
should probably die now Such asmart idea, yeah, damn so good.

Speaker 2 (24:54):
I love how annoying he is to her, though, yeah.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
He's following her around, yeah, and then, like
she's annoying to him, he'sannoying to her, it's like all
great, and he's going to makeevery wrong decision possible.
So Selina, now under theprotection of Chan, goes
shopping and continues aboutlike nothing is different, much
of the dismay of Chan.
In the meantime, cho's lawyerconvinces um dow, who is still

(25:20):
in police custody, to hire anassassin to get rid of selena.
He cannot believe that selenaagreed to testify against her,
but knows that selena has beenwith him for only a year.

Speaker 2 (25:30):
So it's like, yeah, get the fuck out of there, you
know I know, like when they'reat her apartment and he tries to
scare her from the window andlike, okay, so they just said.
We just saw the scene where theboss, the gang boss, it says,
hire someone to kill her.
And then you got this other guyand then it turns out that he's
working with Jackie Chan tolike, try to convince her to

(25:54):
cooperate yeah, essentially so.

Speaker 1 (25:56):
Yeah, they get back to her apartment and she's like
you're not coming in.
That was the silliest death Iknow it's so wild because he's
just like peeking in the windowand he's trying to scare her, to
be like, oh, I need theprotection.
So they hire this guy and hecomes in with a mask on and he's
just like, oh, I'm going tokill you.
Oh, I'm so close, you're coming.

Speaker 2 (26:20):
He's so good, I thought are they being serious
right now?
Is this supposed to be the realkiller.

Speaker 1 (26:25):
Because he takes off the mask.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
He's like oh no, Hides it with a knife.

Speaker 1 (26:29):
And then in his mask there's all these feathers from
the pillow and he's constantlyhaving to blow them out.
Great bit, this movie has somany good bits.

Speaker 2 (26:39):
She knocks him unconscious and he has to
pretend like he's not.

Speaker 1 (26:41):
Yeah, and even before that, like they're grabbing
each other and they're just likekind of dancing.
It's just to be like, oh, he'sreally getting me in between the
whole time.
They're like all right, get outnow.
Then she calls the police andso they have to fight over to
where the phone is like hey, pull the cord out.
And they do that.
It's so good.

Speaker 2 (26:57):
I love all the vases she keeps smashing on them.
Get bigger.
Yeah, they get bigger andbigger.

Speaker 1 (27:03):
It's such a good bit.
And they do it in the rule ofthrees because it's one small
one, a medium one, and then shegrabs the giant one.
He's like whoa, yeah.
And she's just like trying topretend to like get out, it's
great.
And then she's like she getsthe phone.
He's like hold on, I'll makethe call.
Because he's like completelyknocked out, there's no way to
get him out.
And he's like, all right, yeah.

(27:23):
And then he's like I quit, I'mnot doing this anymore, it's too
dangerous Because of her, yeah.
And so it's just like it's justto get her.
It's like all right, take myjacket, you don't need.
He's like she doesn't want togo change or anything.
And so he's pretending to bevery cautious out in the hallway

(27:45):
, like looking over the corner, and they get in the garage and
it's like the score is so sillyduring this point, it's great.
But then they end up making itto the car.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
They're ambushed by the actual villains and this is
when it's amazing, right?

Speaker 1 (28:01):
It's like Jackie Chan's just doing his Jackie
Chan shit, kicking peoplethrough windows, he's flipping
over cars.
Cars are being destroyed likethey're in a car crash, but it's
just him throwing people intoit or getting thrown into it.
It's throwing someone throughthe windshield and then diving
off a car to drop kick themwhile in the windshield metal.

(28:22):
Sweet, it's good, hey, good, that's all I gotta say.
Um.
But then, um, they're scaredaway.
When selena threatens them withchan's revolver, which she
found in his jacket, that'sgreat, she puts it out to the
guy's dick, yeah, it's like.
And she freaks the fuck out dick, yeah, it's like nah, and she
freaks the fuck out and then, like Chan's, like oh, this is

(28:43):
serious, like we actually got toget out of here for real this
time.
So they get back in the car todrive to this place where Chan
records Selina's confession.
Selina says that Chao Tao was afriend of her father and had
helped the family out when timeswere tough.
So then they got together andwhen Chan arrives at his

(29:13):
apartment with Selena, he issurprised by his girlfriend Mae
and her friends who are throwinga birthday party for him.
But Mae becomes angry with Chanafter seeing Selena was only
wearing lingerie and his jacket.
It's classic Silk pajamas.
Yeah but it's supposed to belike underwear.

Speaker 2 (29:25):
He used cake in the face once twice, three times.
Rules of three baby.

Speaker 1 (29:31):
This movie does it.
So one of Chance's friends, whoalso throws a cake in his face,
goes and gets Mae.
Selina was going to tell himMae is back, but she tells her
to not say anything.
But of course this makes thingsworse.

Speaker 2 (29:44):
As he complains, she's trying to help you.

Speaker 1 (29:45):
Jackie, yeah, that Mae is.
Or Kevin, as Chen says, thatMae is a baby and will call,
crying and wanting him back.
Still not noticing her, eventhough, because her, even though
because he's got a towel overhis head and she's just like
behind him, still not noticingher.
Uh, may calls him from insidethe house.
He pretends she is crying andbegging for him to come back,

(30:08):
but he turns around and receivesa third cake to the face may
runs out and he runs after her.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
Good bits bits, bits, bits funny as far as she's
trying to save him.
Yeah, she's like don't you haveanything nice to say about her?
She's like nah that bitch sucks.

Speaker 1 (30:25):
I'm going to have so many ladies kissing me after
this.
I'm Jackie Chan.

Speaker 2 (30:31):
Oh God.

Speaker 1 (30:31):
Yeah, it is great.
When I first watched it I waslike I didn't realize this was a
comedy, a hell of a good comedy.
Right, comedy, a hella goodcomedy right and it's just, it's
all and it's kind of got thepace of a fight.
Yeah right, like a an actual, like kung fu fight, because it's
kind of quick, there's so muchhappening like moving around and
rustling, and it's just great.

(30:52):
And the facial you got to likewatch their faces because their
facial, especially the two girls, because they're kind of slyly
smiling at the same time andit's like, oh, they're enemies
five seconds ago.
And because they're kind ofslyly smiling at the same time
and it's like, oh, they wereenemies five seconds ago and now
they're just like I don't knowwhat to do in this situation.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
I wouldn't be.
If I was her.
I would not be able to keep ittogether.
Yeah, especially when he's onthe phone and she's right behind
.

Speaker 1 (31:11):
I'd be like dude, turn around.
It's great, but the fun doesnot end because Shan later
explains to May that Selena is awitness, but after much
bumbling and embarrassmentcausing her to leave the scene,
such as pulling her off themoped yeah, what the hell man.

Speaker 2 (31:26):
Well, I don't think he would admit to I think he's
just like he's trying to stopher.

Speaker 1 (31:29):
And then he's like he pulls her off.
He's like holy shit, I didn'tknow I could do that.
And then she gets back on andtries to drive off and he lifts
the moped up.
She's like let go.
And he sets her down and she'slike bumbling all over the place
with it.
It's so good man, this May she.
You know what.

Speaker 2 (31:48):
Love her.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
Love her in the movie .
You know, we know that he's ahero.
He's a high stress job andshe's like.
I just love him, even though hekeeps doing the stupidest thing
.
Keeps doing the stupidest thing, yeah, it's classic.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
It's classic you know a couple stuff in movies but
it's great.
I thought, no, if I was her I'dbe pissed.

Speaker 1 (32:05):
I'd be so pissed yeah , but it's just like I don't
know if she ends up going to thetrial.
So you know she knows it'ssupposed to all be, you know
like part of it or whatever.
But I don't know.
It's just such a good bit.
I love it.
It was really funny, so fun.

Speaker 2 (32:20):
Meanwhile, the fucking trial.
Why are they all wearing wigs?

Speaker 1 (32:24):
oh wait, hold on what is going on, let's get there,
let's hold on.
Meanwhile, zelina discovers thatthe attack at her apartment was
a sham because she sees thatthe guy that was attacking her
was in a police photo with himum, and decides to slyly record
over a confession about workingwith a chow Tao Tao that took

(32:45):
place in the car ride there.
She pretends to sit on a cactus, knock water on him and herself
and starts to seduce him andtricks him to sleeping in his
bed.
She's like sitting on thecactus, like oh, he's like no,
that's my favorite cactus, that's my pride and joy as he's
like bending down to pick it oh.
he's like no, that's my favoritecactus, that's my Friday joy.
As he's like, bending down topick it up puts the water over
his head.
So when he lifts up and knocksit all over, she's like oh, I'm

(33:07):
so wet.
He's like, oh, I can't sit onthis couch.

Speaker 2 (33:11):
It's not comfortable enough.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
Maybe I can go into your bed, yeah.

Speaker 2 (33:14):
Which I'm sure won't come back into the trial.

Speaker 1 (33:17):
So she goes to bed and then he's like oh wait, this
actually might be a thing.
And she's like oh, don't touchme, and goes and sleeps in his
bed.
And he has to sleep on thecouch Great bit, deserved it.
So many good bits.
But while they're asleep shesneaks away, while Chan is
sleeping and is not present atall for the trial the next day
won't she get arrested for notbeing there.

Speaker 2 (33:37):
She doesn't, she was subpoenaed.

Speaker 1 (33:38):
Well, she knows that if she gets out of the situation
then her, the boyfriend, thecriminal, will protect her.
So she's like if I get away, the trial goes horribly, he'll
know where I can stay to beprotected, Okay.
But yeah, he wakes up.
He's like oh, crap, crap, I'mlate for the trial.

(34:01):
He can't find her.

Speaker 2 (34:02):
He goes.

Speaker 1 (34:02):
There's this guy trying to get in a trying to
parallel park and yeah, he's thefirst and he goes and he's
perfectly that guy's like, yeah, you better run before I beat
you up, and he's like that was ahell of a parking job yeah, so
good.

Speaker 2 (34:11):
I mean it's obvious that they like pulled the car,
yeah, like towards the spot yeah, I, I know it's so obvious,
it's so good.

Speaker 1 (34:20):
So then we get to the trial.
The trial is going horriblebecause the defense lawyer is
really good Way better than theprosecution the best witness
they have is Chan, but hisarguments are dog shit.

Speaker 2 (34:33):
Yeah, this trial is.
Is this supposed to be funny?

Speaker 1 (34:37):
I think so.
I think it's supposed to be abit, I don't know.
I think it's supposed to be abit.

Speaker 2 (34:40):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (34:41):
Everyone looks goofy, it almost seems like they're
trying to make fun of likeBritish and American trials
right.
It seems like it might just bea joke towards like our the way
our court systems work, so thebest witness they have is Chan,
but the lawyer is able to causedoubt at every turn.
The prosecution is losing, butthey still have the tape.

(35:03):
But when?

Speaker 2 (35:03):
they play it.
It is recorded over.
I love how they bring in thebig speakers yeah, it's great.

Speaker 1 (35:09):
And like everybody kind of starts laughing because
it sounds like they're about tohave sex and stuff.
And then we cut to.
We cut to Chu Dao I know how tosay Chu Dao and he how to say
it Chu Dao and he kind of looksupset.
He's like wait, were theyactually having sex?
It made me feel bad for him fora second.

Speaker 2 (35:28):
But yeah, she can't believe.
I mean at this point she knowshe's the biggest moron ever.

Speaker 1 (35:33):
Yeah, I mean, he's obviously not taking everything
as seriously as he needs to.

Speaker 2 (35:37):
He's obviously tricked to do all of this.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
I do love at the beginning, when Chan is, he puts
his hand on the Bible and stuffand like raises it and then
waves it.
It's like so cute.

Speaker 2 (35:48):
But surely they don't do that?
In China, christianity is noteven legal.

Speaker 1 (35:53):
That's why it makes it almost kind of seem like they
were picking fun at people.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Yeah, I wonder if that's to getlike American audiences, for
them to like understand what itis to Chinese audiences.
They're like this is funny toAmerican.
We're like this is how it shouldwork.

(36:14):
So, though Chudo is released onbail, he wants revenge against
Chan.
His men say that Chudo shouldsend Selena away with a one-way
ticket because the case is notover and if they find more
evidence they could lock him up.
He can't flee because all hismoney is in evidence.
No-transcript.

(36:36):
I just love it that Chudo doesnot want to kill Selina, but at
every turn, someone in his likeposse or whatever, is constantly
like do you want me to kill her?
And they're all like.
You can find a woman anywhere.
There's plenty of attractiveladies everywhere.
That's the way most movies playit that's what I kind of like

(36:59):
about this villain is that heactually likes this girl.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
Yeah, he's like taking care of her.

Speaker 1 (37:04):
Yeah, and it never seems like at any point he wants
to do almost anything that he'sdoing, except for if it
involves the police.
He's very willing to kill them.

Speaker 2 (37:14):
Yeah, like drugs in China is a huge thing.
They will execute you if youhave drugs in China.

Speaker 1 (37:21):
It definitely probably is lightened for
audiences, you know.

Speaker 2 (37:25):
Maybe that's what's supposed to make him the evil
guy.

Speaker 1 (37:27):
Yeah, he's got drugs.
He's got the drugs, which isthe worst thing you could do.
He's also the coolest guyaround.

Speaker 2 (37:32):
Yeah, because he's got all the drugs.
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1 (37:35):
Everybody loves this guy.
So Chan steps in cow poop anddances, moon walks it off.
Music is really silly.
Then I was like is this aboutto start playing Michael Jackson
?
We learn he's been transferredto a different town because of
his failures, and it'sdefinitely a small town.
There's cows everywhere, onecow town he is stuck at the

(37:57):
office alone, may calls, but allthe phones all of a sudden
start ringing.
There's like a girl that'sbeing beaten by her husband and
one's getting raped.
One's getting raped.
One lost a cow, one lost a cowit's all played for laughs.
It might be the thing that agesthe worst at the end.
And it's like something aboutlike the girl got raped like a
year ago and he's like, why areyou just now pronouncing it now?

(38:17):
And he's like, oh, do they havepills for this?
And I'm like, what is thisscenario?
Is there something being missedin translation here?
And like May this whole time istrying to have a conversation
with him about like hey, we gotto meet the mom, or my mother,
you have to pick the place.
And then eventually, somehowshe hears that Chan says, hey,
you need to take morning afterpills.

(38:38):
Essentially, and she's like mymother doesn't need these pills
and hangs up.
But this is so good, this wholething.

Speaker 2 (38:45):
It's so cool.

Speaker 1 (38:47):
How can you just do that Right?
You shouldn't.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
You should just answer one phone at a time.
How can you?

Speaker 1 (38:53):
be that talented that you can just do all this stuff
with these phones and not getlike he's tangled up.
But you know he's tangled up.
But you know he's just so goodat maneuvering them and like him
kicking the pencil yeah, catching it and just like
putting the wrong phone on thewrong receiver and then he's
like he hung up one but the oneon the receiver is still there
and he's like I'm so confused,good, bit.

Speaker 2 (39:12):
It was really funny so and he's trying to eat his
soup.
Yeah, yeah, he's got his ramen.

Speaker 1 (39:18):
He unhooks all the phones.
He's like I'm the best policeofficer ever.
Then, yeah, it takes twopencils to eat the erasers.
He's like there's one phonethat rings in the captain's
office and he goes and he likestumbles and falls over and
answers it.
It's like, oh, this is thephone company, this so good.

(39:39):
So.
And then we see he's going tomeet May.
He makes things worse byditching her when his friend
Snake Eyes calls saying thatthey are going to kill Selina.
But Snake Eyes was told to saythat to get Chan there.
And there's this whole bit withbetween May and Chan where his
parking brake doesn't work so hehas to hold the car while he's
talking to her, and he tells herto hold it while he goes and

(40:01):
runs and talks on the payphoneand then she just like does not
care and the car almost hits himso good.
It's like this movie, just likeconstantly has jokes.

Speaker 2 (40:13):
It's wild.
Yeah, they're pretty good jokes.
Yeah, especially for 1984.
Especially for 1984.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
Yeah.
And then Chan finds and freesSelena, but is attacked by
several Chew Do's men.
When fellow police inspector orinspector man police inspector
man is what they call himarrives, he reveals that he had
been working with Chow Dao andthus Selena's capture was merely
a ruse to trap Chan.
No, and to Inspector Man's grimsurprise, the plan is also to

(40:44):
include Dao's men killing himwith Chan's gun to frame him for
murder.
Doing so, Chan is able to runout with Selina, throwing her
off the building, letting herescape, but he is captured and
left in a field, drugged,essentially.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
Oh man, I love when he just throws her off.

Speaker 1 (40:59):
it's like whoa, he's like trust me bro yeah, it's
like oh so fun, though I wouldlove to be thrown off the thing
into a pool, though no way manI'd love it.
He's so scared you never justjumped off of.
I have jumped off a roof andhow did we make it?

Speaker 2 (41:19):
I don't know, man.

Speaker 1 (41:20):
The kids will never understand how great it was
without supervision.

Speaker 2 (41:24):
Oh man, it's the best but then you you can actually
hurt yourself, like I hurt myneck pretty bad in a pool.
Really I had a high dive, overeight feet of water, yeah and I
went straight to the bottom andlike hurt my neck I hit it so
hard I had paint on my teethlike blue paint from the bottom
of the pool.

Speaker 1 (41:42):
Hey, jason, don't do that bro.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
I think that's why I can't look like turn my head all
the way over here.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
Jesus Christ bro.

Speaker 2 (41:52):
I went to sit down next to my dad.
He's like, hey, what's going on?

Speaker 1 (41:54):
Honestly, I can't tell you I honestly I can't tell
you.
You're gonna be so mad if Itold you I was doing so much
stupid stuff you have no idea,so funny so Bill Cho tries to
tell superintendent I think it'sa lie, superintendent, lie that

(42:16):
he is innocent.
The lie doesn't believe it.
Um Chan calls May and takes herbike and goes to the police
station.
Now a fugitive cop killer Chanmust try to catch Chu Dao and
clear his name, taking hissuperintendent as hostage in
order to escape custody, andpops off on him saying all he
does is sit in office while theyrisk their life.

(42:37):
It's like if someone dies, allit means for you is paperwork
and a bow at a funeral.
Hell yeah, though he soon letshis superior go free.

Speaker 2 (42:46):
Chief Blue Squadron or his sergeant.

Speaker 1 (42:49):
What a great little scene.
You got to see Jackie Chanactually act hard.
Yeah, because all of a suddenit got serious and I was like
I'm fucking in it.
Now let's go, jackie.
Like I'm fucking in it, let'sgo, jackie, let's get him.
He's tired of all this shit, let's take down everybody.
But yeah, it was sort of agreat little scene.

(43:11):
Just like all of a sudden allthe frustration like these
Chinese cops may have like inreal life comes out on this one
guy.
It's funny Like he comes outand there's all the cops in the
room and they're like put yourhands on the desk.
Everybody's like get thesharpshooters out and everything
.
But then like he just drives alittle bit and then lets the
superintendent go and he's likeit's like I was never going to
hurt you.
And he's like yeah, well, Ialso believe you, but I can't
act like I do.
And he's like oh, it's likeonce I get back, I'll send

(43:32):
people after you, so you betterhurry.
It's like classic stuff wealways see in movies, but it's
done really well here Like youhave to succeed or you're going
to go to jail.

Speaker 2 (43:41):
Yeah, essentially yeah.

Speaker 1 (43:42):
It's like I got to do my job still, but no, it was
like a really fun, good sceneand it got a little tense for a
second, which was kind ofsomething we needed because this
movie was so silly and like theaction has been so bombastic a
little bit, so it's like nice toget like this real, like shit,
like things are dark.
Now he's he's being framed formurder.

(44:03):
We saw this guy die who wasjust needing money and I don't
know.
It's great.
So now Chan is on the hunt.
He goes to snake eyes to getinfo after using a forklift to
like trap a guy on the wall, which is great and I was like we
could do that at work.
Probably would have crushed himmaybe, yeah, probably be dead a

(44:23):
little bit, yeah.
And then he goes to meet Mayoutside the shopping mall and
he's just like sitting therewaiting at the mall and we got a
serious Chan now he's allbruised up, yeah, and he looks
rad.
Yeah, then May's like I'mscared.

Speaker 2 (44:36):
This has been quite a couple days for me.
She's like why am I here?
This looks dangerous.

Speaker 1 (44:41):
It's like I have a feeling I'm going to be
important to the plot, though,so I better stay.
So Selena goes to Chu Dao'soffice at a shopping mall to
download incriminating data fromChu Dao's computer system.
Chu Dao notices this.

Speaker 2 (44:59):
She's not downloading anything, she's printing it.
Right it right.
Yeah, they didn't have flashdrives printing the information
with a really slow printer Ican't help it.

Speaker 1 (45:09):
We're in this century now.

Speaker 2 (45:10):
This is how we talk about the guys like someone's
stealing my data.
Yeah, because no, man, I guessusing a printer.

Speaker 1 (45:19):
I guess like you can just like tell that it's all
been going through from anothercomputer.

Speaker 2 (45:22):
I don't know.
I'm sure that.
I'm sure that existed, maybe, maybe, probably.

Speaker 1 (45:27):
But yeah, so he notices it and he and his men
rush to the shopping mall tointervene.
Chan and May are who aremonitoring Chu Dao's activities,
follow and then searing ensuingcarnage.
Chan defeats all of Chu Dao'shenchmen and they're destroying
them all.
Essentially, there's a baseballbat fight.
That was awesome.
This is great.
This is where he's got thelittle clothes hanging rack.

(45:49):
He's throwing it around.
Everybody's getting thrown allover the place.
There's so much broken glass.

Speaker 2 (45:53):
Everything's falling down.

Speaker 1 (45:55):
There it is.
How can we cause destruction, break every glass in the
building?

Speaker 2 (45:58):
I know there was one point where he jumped, there's
like shells behind him and hedid a flip, yeah, and then I was
like, oh, and he only knockedoff one little picture.
I don't know, I feel like.

Speaker 1 (46:07):
Yeah, it's this slow motion flip and it feels like he
was supposed to go into therack Into the wall and knock
everything down.
And then he didn't, and it'slike well, that's a bummer, fuck
you shells.
You're not getting out of thisfight so easily Because they do
the slow motion flip and it'slike that's all we're doing the
slow motion for.

(46:28):
So it seems like they probablyonly had one take to do and it
didn't work, and the other guy'slike ah, it's good.
But I love that.
He's like fighting off five men.
But what's great about thesefight scenes with all these
people they're all attacking atonce and something that doesn't
happen like old action moviesright, it's always one on one,
but it's like a thing thathappens in all the Kung Fu

(46:50):
movies, like they always kind ofget attacked same time a lot of
times.
That's probably the best way togo and I think the fun of that
is because, you know, with theirfighting style there's a lot of
like absorbing hits and things, and so whenever you see them
take the hits, you can see hisposture change and everything
and it makes you want to punchstuff.
You want to learn kung fu?

(47:11):
Yeah, and it's just like, yeah,it makes it believable that
this guy can do this.

Speaker 2 (47:16):
Yeah, and there are some people who can legitimately
fight off like defendthemselves against multiple,
like surrounded by multipleattackers.
Well shoot.
Half of them become stuntmenand join the movies.
It's great we see them actuallydo it on screen.

Speaker 1 (47:32):
Then we see Selena.
She gets a baseball bat, hits aguy and then she kind of gets
thrown everywhere.
And then one guy like he kindof neutralizes one of the guys
and then a different guy jumpson a motorcycle and he's like
it's time to up the ante of thisfight and drives a motorcycle
at him.
But then Jackie Chan does allthese dope ass moves, gets on
the motorcycle and drives himthrough a bunch of glass and

(47:53):
it's like people are dying atthis point.
I know it's sugar glass, butit's still probably stabbing
people.
It could still cut you, I guess.
And then, after I say all thatin my notes, I put hell yeah, so
fun.
We're going to have to do morejacket challenges.

Speaker 2 (48:08):
That was amazing.
Yeah, a whole jacket challenge.

Speaker 1 (48:11):
So the briefcase containing the computer data
falls to the ground of the floorof the mall.
But Chou Dao retrieves it afterattacking Mei, because Mei
tries to get it and they likethrow her downstairs and then
they kind of push her around andbeat her a little bit and it's
like don't you fucking touch Meiso Chan.
At the top of the floor he getsthe idea I need to get down

(48:32):
there fast.
What should I do?
Should I slide down this pole?

Speaker 2 (48:34):
Bring me a horse.

Speaker 1 (48:35):
Yes, so he slides down a pole wrapped in light
bulbs to the ground of the floorand he like, falls through some
glass and then, like on a kiosk, and he catches Chau, braces
his body, but the rest of thepolice force quickly arrives to
prevent him from further takingmatters into his own hands.
Selena attests to them thatChau killed Inspector man and

(48:59):
the evidence of his crimes is inthe briefcase.
Um, so yeah, when he goes downthe pole, did you expect to see
it three straight times in a row?

Speaker 2 (49:06):
no, it was just so awesome.
This is a dope stunt.
You guys don't understand howdangerous this was, so you're
getting it three times becausehe almost died.

Speaker 1 (49:16):
I think we need to normalize this in movies hurting
our actors?
Well, no, if there's, like a ifthere a crazy realistic stunt
that someone did, I think weshould, and it's that wild.

Speaker 2 (49:26):
Show it three times.
I mean they did do it kind oflike in Face Off, yeah, face Off
, and shows like what's hisfucking face.

Speaker 1 (49:37):
I mean, like John Wick should be doing this.
Yeah, when he does an awesomestunt, it's usually only in like
really cheesy things.

Speaker 2 (49:43):
Yeah, like movies and shows.
But uh, Like Chuck Norris, that's what I was when he's the
Texas guy.

Speaker 1 (49:49):
Yeah, texas Ranger.

Speaker 2 (49:51):
Texas Norris, texas Norris.
Hell yeah, I used to do thatshit show.

Speaker 1 (49:55):
But yeah, I mean, what a stunt so great.
Do you prefer this stunt or thecar stunt at the beginning in
the town?
I kind of actually think thecar stunt at the beginning is so
insane looking and the way it'sfilmed is so great and it's
just like, wow, chaos everywhere.
Yeah, I think so.
I think the car one was yeahreally cool, even though this
one is the one that scares methe most.

(50:16):
It's very scary.
It's only dude, he justespecially after learning how he
did it.
It's like you just did it.
There's nothing to protect you.

Speaker 2 (50:22):
It just makes me feel bad for hurting us.
It's like wow.

Speaker 1 (50:24):
Hey, thanks, man, you made a great movie though.

Speaker 2 (50:26):
He should have his fellow officers bring crash pads
wherever they go, just for him.

Speaker 1 (50:31):
Yeah.
So Chews, the defense attorneyshows up and accuses the police
of misconduct and you just seeJackie Chan, just like God.

Speaker 2 (50:43):
Dang it.
I just want to kill everybody.

Speaker 1 (50:47):
So he ends up beating up the lawyer and then he's
like ciao.

Speaker 2 (50:54):
Come here and just lays into his stomach.

Speaker 1 (50:56):
And it's so satisfying.
He punches him like 30 times Iknow, and the guy's like ugh and
satisfying.

Speaker 2 (51:02):
He punches him like 30 times I know, and the guy's
like, and then like hits himinto a shopping cart, pushes him
into some glass how is he notpooping his pants right?

Speaker 1 (51:11):
I can't his body's like I don't know what to do.
I'm just stunned at the moment.
But he's stopped by all theother policemen tons of, and
essentially it all.
They all win justice is served.

Speaker 2 (51:23):
It was great the sergeant police, the lieutenant,
wrote there.

Speaker 1 (51:28):
He was like, oh, this paperwork's gonna suck he's
like what paperwork I didn't sayshit, yeah, you're right, we'll
do it together, we'll do thepaperwork together.
Then he loves paperwork andthat's it the end.
And then you see all the stuntsbeing performed and it's great
Like you kind of see it like howthey did it.
Yeah, it's great.

Speaker 2 (51:46):
Jackie Chan was so young in this movie, I know.

Speaker 1 (51:50):
Yeah, and like he's got so much career left, it's
crazy.
So many more people faces tokick so many times that he's
going to get hit with a ladderin his face.
I to kick so many times thathe's gonna get hit with a ladder
in his face.
I think I can't rememberwhichever the one is where it's
like a very snowy movie becauseI remember he's like the way
he's dressed and like they'relike skiing and stuff and
there's just one ladder bitwhere he does so much shit with

(52:12):
a ladder man.

Speaker 2 (52:14):
It rules I wish I could I wish I could remember
which one.
It is, I remember, rush hour 2,when they're in las ve, he
tries to like jump through atiny little window yeah, he's
like where they hand out thechips, yeah, and he just keeps
busting ass over and over andover trying to get into it.

Speaker 1 (52:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (52:33):
Oh so funny.

Speaker 1 (52:34):
The movie I was talking about is Jackie Chan's
First Strike.
I remember that was one of the.
I think that was one of thefirst ones I've watched him in.
I don't know if I've seen it,it's.
It's all I remember is there'sa part where he's like fighting
with a ladder.
And then I remember seeing thebloopers and I was like, oh ouch
, dude jesus ladders hurt whenthey hit your face.
You know, I've never been hitby a ladder me and my friend
richard, you know we likedwrestling and ladder matches.

(52:56):
So we on a trampoline, would hiteach other with ladders, what
softly you know like.
But then there was times wherewe're like we're just like the
point where we're gonna like lay, lay one of the one of us on a
ladder and then like jump on usjust even because, like I know,
it's like, oh, it won't hurtthat bad, and I'll just, I'll
fake the like hit and I'll justgo and set him down.

(53:18):
Or he sat me on the ladder, like on my back, and I was like
we can't do this.
If you just jump while I'm onthis ladder, it's going to hurt
my frail boy body.
But anyways, jason, what's thepoint of police story?

Speaker 2 (53:36):
I don't know, it's kind of a fun watch.

Speaker 1 (53:40):
Don't talk bad about your girlfriend.

Speaker 2 (53:42):
I guess Maybe just you know don't try to impress
everyone.
Take your job seriously.

Speaker 1 (53:48):
Because he does a great job.
When he starts taking the jobseriously, he gets real angry.
He wins, but before all that hewas kind of being nonchalant
about everything and he lost andyou can punch your way out of
any problem yeah, and just youknow you got to learn how to
keep your love life and yourwork life separate punch life
from your love.
Yeah no, I think the point isto make a hell of a hell of a

(54:11):
good movie action movie funaction movie.

Speaker 2 (54:14):
Yeah, I feel like it's stood up, you know yeah,
and that justice always fuckingwins.

Speaker 1 (54:18):
Yeah, every time it needs to please justice always
fucking wins.

Speaker 2 (54:20):
Yeah, every time it needs to Please.

Speaker 1 (54:22):
justice always win.

Speaker 2 (54:24):
And our core system.
We need to bring back the wigs.

Speaker 1 (54:26):
I think we do, we do.
That's the one thing that wedid not keep from our when we
became America versus London, because you know that's what
they do in England they weartheir silly little wigs.
Yeah, a lot of that shit herewe're just like eh, we'll just
put the robe on.
Too good for wigs, we'll putthe robe on and we'll just put
innocent people in prison.
We cure syphilis.

Speaker 2 (54:46):
We don't have to wear wigs anymore.

Speaker 1 (54:49):
Now.
Our hair doesn't need theprotection.

Speaker 2 (54:53):
We don't have as much lice.

Speaker 1 (54:54):
Yeah, All right.
So we're gonna hear next herein the next category the Good,
the Bad, the Ugly, Fine.
It's where we discuss the goodof the film something that we
like, the bad something wedidn't like, the ugly, something
that didn't age well.
And the fine, something thatdid age well.
The good is pretty easy.
Jackie Chan is just a reallygood action star and very
likable.

Speaker 2 (55:12):
Yeah, and I thought they did a really good job with
the comedy and it was sometimesa little overly silly, but most
of the time it was genuinelyfunny.

Speaker 1 (55:21):
Yeah, I mean I think the mesh between, like the three
different, the seriousness andthe comedic parts, I think it
meshed really well.
Yeah, and you got to see JackieChan's butt.
Yeah, the first time I'd neverseen his butt, never seen it,
like I had to pause for a minuteJust admire it I had to put a
fan on me.

(55:47):
Um, for the bad to me it's likesometimes the score is what made
it too silly.
Oh for sure, like you don'tneed the music.
We know it's supposed to befunny.
Um, but that's all I had forthe bad.
Nothing really, yeah.

Speaker 2 (56:02):
I don't really have anything bad.
I mean maybe a more evilvillain, but it was.

Speaker 1 (56:08):
I don't know what I kind of liked about it is that
it wasn't.
It almost seemed like sometimes.

Speaker 2 (56:13):
It fit the movie that he wasn't so evil.

Speaker 1 (56:16):
Like he would have been a killing sadistic person,
but it was just he's like.
I just have to do it to getpast the law.

Speaker 2 (56:24):
The movie wasn't serious enough for him to be
like that.

Speaker 1 (56:27):
It would have been yeah, but he was willing to kill
, but he never wanted to kill.
It was just the law was forcinghim to kill, which is just like
well, just don't do that either.

Speaker 2 (56:36):
All that's just making it worse, and I'm wrong.

Speaker 1 (56:42):
You're wrong and you're right.
The ugly I put.
He's kind of bad at his job.
Yeah, until he decides to beserious and good at it.

Speaker 2 (56:48):
I think some of the stunts didn't really age that
well in my opinion, but whichones?
We've come a long way.
Oh, like the pole thing.
Well, not just that, but like Idon't know, some of the fight
scenes, like the, just like theprops and stuff I don't know,
you know, some of it just didn'tseem like of course it's not

(57:09):
realistic, but like I don't.
Just I feel like sometimes, when they were trying to be
serious with a stunt, it wasended up being silly yeah, like
I mean just even with the pole, showing it three times was kind
of a silly decision um, and yeah, I don't know, I guess I'll
have to disagree a little bit.

Speaker 1 (57:25):
I thought like this I thought it all kind of looked
great um, maybe there weren'tenough stunts, yeah yeah, well,
I mean, I do understand, likewith the cactus and stuff like
that and the drain.

Speaker 2 (57:36):
That was intentional, yeah, intentionally funny.

Speaker 1 (57:38):
But it's like okay what we doing here, but like I
loved it every second of it, itwas great bits for me.
Well, yeah, I already said he'skind of bad at his job.
If he was a better policeofficer, this movie would have
been 20 minutes long, or abetter boyfriend, yeah, um the
fine.
Um, I just put like JackieChan's old movies man like
honestly when he got to once hecame to America and started

(58:00):
doing kind of rush hour, likeafter the first rush hour, like
his American stuff wasn't thatgood, like Shanghai Nights and
stuff like that, it's just likekind.
It just kind of hurt him hiscareer a little bit and he
eventually just went back toChina and did all his movies.

Speaker 2 (58:13):
there Was Shanghai Night, the one with Owen Wilson.
Yeah, I kind of liked that one.
I liked it as a kid.

Speaker 1 (58:17):
I haven't seen it as an adult yeah, me neither but
you could just tell that healmost kind of became a bit of
himself, right, like it's just.

Speaker 2 (58:26):
It could have had something to do with American
racism towards Asian people, because the movies just became
like oh, we're doing acharacteristic of Jackie.
Chan.

Speaker 1 (58:33):
now we've got an Asian guy yeah, and it's like
always like hey, you know what'sfunny about this situation?
You don't speak good English.

Speaker 2 (58:41):
Yeah, I know that's fucked up, but then when?

Speaker 1 (58:43):
you watch these old movies of his, it's like take
this motherfucker serious.
He's awesome, though Rush Houris kind of a really great,
perfect film.
Yeah, the smart thing of thatis like you have like two people
of color and it's just like.
That is.
Yeah, it's great.
That's what makes it like work, more than versus.
Like wow, I'm Owen Wilson,jackie Chan, I can't understand

(59:04):
the words coming out of yourmouth.
Wow, I'm a cowboy, you're.
You're a Chinese man.
Wow, we're stuck in thisscenario with each other.
We don't get along well.

Speaker 2 (59:17):
Wow that's a good one , that's a good impression, yeah
hell yeah, I'm gonna makethat's gonna be in my.

Speaker 1 (59:25):
I'm gonna have to clip that and make that on
social medias alright, so that'sthe end of that category Now
we're going to move to ourdouble features, where we
recommend a movie to goalongside this movie.
Jason, did you have anything?

Speaker 2 (59:38):
Well, I mean, you could always say something like
Rush Hour.
Yeah, of course I remember, chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are
fucking hilarious together.

Speaker 1 (59:46):
Yeah, one of my favorites of his.
It's also directed by JackieChan, it was co-directed with
him and another name I justwon't be able to say, but it's
essentially the guy.
He gets drunk and he becomes anamazing.
That's the drunken master.
Yeah, legend of drunken master.
He, when he drinks, he becomeslike this.
He's got this weird like typeof.
Kung Fu, or he's like.

(01:00:06):
I mean, I think that's an actualstyle of fighting and it's so
fun to watch people do it,because after I watched it I was
like I gotta look this shit up.
This is great and the movie'sjust T to be good.
Yeah, it's like it's.

Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
I remember it might be my favorite.
I've seen only like one clip ofhim, like he's like people are
trying to hit him but he'sswerving, he's, you know,
swerving, and then he just likeleans back, takes a big chug of
some drink and he comes back upand just bops him with it.

Speaker 1 (01:00:32):
I know it's so good he's, jackie Chan is so talented
, golly, yeah, if you haven'tseen Legend, the Drunken Master,
it's.
It's funnier than this movieand, like, the action is
probably a little bit better.
It's just, it's about the samelength.
I mean, honestly, I thinkDrunken Master is kind of a
masterpiece.
It's just a.
It's about the same length.

(01:00:53):
I mean, honestly, I thinkdrunken master is kind of a
masterpiece and the movie wejust did is a masterpiece, just
not as much of a masterpiece inmy eyes, I don't know, it's just
the.
The drunken master is a littlebit more serious, sillier.
So if you don't want a moresilly movie, then that's not the
thing to do.
Um, but yeah, yeah, that's ourepisode.
Oh, did you do one?
Did you ever play the?
Oh, you said Rush Hour, that'sright, oh yeah, Rush.
Hour, one of the Rush Hours, pick one, the first one.

(01:01:15):
The other ones are.
There was a video game thatfeatured.

Speaker 2 (01:01:20):
It was a fighting game like Mortal Kombat style,
but it featured the Wu-Tang Clan.
Oh, have you ever played that?
No, I, no, no.
No, it was so good.
And each member of the wootbecause there's a lot of wu-tang
clan members, yeah, but theyall have their own fighting
style, and old dirty bastard wasthe drunken fighting style yeah

(01:01:41):
, drunken monk fighting style.
It was always my favorite.
Yeah, it was such a it was ahard game.

Speaker 1 (01:01:47):
I'm gonna look at that.
All fighting games to me arehard it was so hard, but it was
so fun.

Speaker 2 (01:01:51):
I'm gonna look this up.

Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
Oh, shaolin Style.
Yes, yeah, I do remember thatgame.
Looks terrible.

Speaker 2 (01:01:59):
It probably is.

Speaker 1 (01:02:00):
PlayStation 2, maybe Everybody trying to get on that
Tekken and Street Fighter inMortal Kombat.
All right Now.
That concludes our episode onPolice Story.
Hey, jason, I think you knowI'm about to go on vacation to
Florida.
This is our last episode.
We're doing this in August andyou'll hear it from two weeks
from when we're recording andwhen I get back from vacation.

(01:02:23):
Usually we take it around.
If we take one around Augustand it goes into September when
we get back, it's officiallyHalloween in our house, so that
means it's officially Halloweenafter this episode on our
podcast.
So it's time for five to sixdays, five to six weeks of
horror movies.
Yeah, I can't wait, because it'sthe best genre movie ever and
we're going to do a movie thatwe promised we were going to do

(01:02:44):
before but we had to cancel it.
We're finally going to doprobably my favorite zombie
movie Return of the Living Dead, war Brains.

Speaker 2 (01:02:53):
War.

Speaker 1 (01:02:54):
Brains.
So good, zombies talk.
Baby, it's punk rock zombietime.
Oh no, woo, I hope you likeAcid Zombie Rain.
I hope you like Dogs Cut inHalf.

Speaker 2 (01:03:09):
It's still a movie.

Speaker 1 (01:03:11):
I hope you like that.
That's a good question, bert.
We literally named our catafter the character Bert.
Oh, it's so good, we're gonnahave Dakota on.
I hope we can get all thescheduling right and we're gonna
fucking knock it out, um, butyeah, so join us.
Next week it's officiallyHalloween season.
Um, sorry if you don't likescary movies it's my favorite

(01:03:32):
genre.
So we always do more than justfour weeks of horror movies.
So we're gonna do six to seven.
We're also eventually gonnastart doing special episodes,
potentially Not guaranteeing itJust depends how much time we
have to record over the next fewweeks.
We're gonna do where.
We're gonna do a bit where inthe VHS movies, the anthology

(01:03:54):
movies that started in the late2010s we're going to do segments
of those movies because they'rejust done in like little 20
minute segments and on likemaybe Wednesdays or Thursdays,
we'll release an episode justover one segment and we'll do it
throughout the Halloween season.
So I want to do the VHS movies, but I feel like it'd be more
fun to talk about each segmentseparately so we can really dive

(01:04:16):
into, like the director thatdirected it and stuff.
And you know, maybe at the endwe'll rank the segments and
stuff, like that Hell yeah.
Yeah, that'd be fun, cool.
So make sure you join us nextweek for that.
We probably won't start the Vnext week, but the week after we
probably will, because we haveto end it before Halloween,

(01:04:36):
because we also have to film anextra episode on Halloween 3 our
commentary on it.
We also have to do that.
Holy shit, we may be doing toomuch now, but, yeah, join us
next week for Return of theLiving Dead.
Baby Dakota's coming on.
Yeah, leave us some fan mail.
In the description we have alink that you can click and you
can just text us some fan mail.
Or at the bottom, we recommendat mailbag.
Uh, we recommend mailbag atgmailcom.

(01:04:59):
Also, leave us a review If youlike police stories.
Say thanks for recommendingpolice story.
Everybody should listen.
Um, and then I'd like to thankJoey Prosser for our intro and
outro.
Um, you can follow him on X atMr Joey Prosser.
And this has been the weRecommend Podcast.
I've been Jesse, I've beenJason and bye, more byes.
