SPEAKER_02 (00:01):
Let's get down to
business to defeat the Huns.
SPEAKER_00 (00:08):
I can't get my phone
to work.
SPEAKER_02 (00:09):
Did they send me
daughters?
Do you know why I'm singing thissong right now?
No.
Look at my mug.
Mulan's on my mug.
UNKNOWN (00:19):
Okay.
SPEAKER_00 (00:31):
Hey everybody and
welcome to We Watch TV.
It is the podcast about the TVthat we watch.
I am Daniel.
She is Hope.
This is episode 110 and welcometo the Superman Experience.
It's a movie and a theaterexperience.
We'll get to that in just amoment.
Do you want to say hi to thefolks or anything or are you
(00:51):
just going to laugh at me?
SPEAKER_02 (00:53):
I'm going to say hi
and that good movie.
bad theater experience, but I'mgoing to let you paint the
picture, set the scene.
SPEAKER_00 (01:04):
But before we do the
Superman experience, we did want
to put a call to action out toall of our loyal listeners.
We're trying to kind of do afollower rally here this month
to see how many new people wecan pick up.
Hope took part in a podcast theother day uh what was the name
of the podcast you were on
SPEAKER_02 (01:25):
well i have that in
my show notes that we were going
to close with that but you'regoing off script it was the
toilet bowl club with nice fouljohn paul foul
SPEAKER_00 (01:33):
shout out
SPEAKER_02 (01:34):
i and his um ang is
his co-host name and they had me
on and it was super fun
SPEAKER_00 (01:39):
so we noticed some
new downloads from that and we
thought well let's let's seewhat let's see how much more we
can push this so if you'relistening to us today and you're
you're a loyal you know followerand you're on social medias with
us you know just Hit that littleshare button on something.
Be it the Instagram or X.
I hate calling it X.
I cringe calling it X.
(02:00):
Or any of the other things thatwe post on.
Just hit that share button forus and we'll see if you can help
us pick up any new weirdies.
I like calling Instagram thegram.
The gram?
Is that what the kids are?
I don't think so.
I don't think the kids are evenon the gram.
SPEAKER_02 (02:13):
Yeah, they're on
like TikTok.
SPEAKER_00 (02:15):
Anyways, do that for
us.
Help us out or not.
You're adults.
You can make choices foryourselves.
With that out of the way, theSuperman experience.
I don't even know where to beginto describe this situation.
SPEAKER_02 (02:30):
I'll start it, and
then you can start filling in,
because I'll kick it off.
SPEAKER_00 (02:33):
Okay.
SPEAKER_02 (02:34):
Because you're
better at painting the vivid
details than I am.
So we decide that we're going togo see Superman.
It wasn't just the two of us.
We went with Daniel's mom andDaniel's sister.
Shout out, Hannah.
Hannah, listener.
Hey, Hannah.
And we decided to go seeSuperman.
We get there.
We get our tickets.
(02:54):
We get our snacks.
It's fine.
We go into the theater.
Red flag number one.
so dark and the movie hadn'teven started yet the commercials
before the previews hadn'tstarted yet just darkness
normally at this particulartheater that we go to when we go
here I'm always annoyed at howbright it is during the movie so
I'm like wow this is darkness
SPEAKER_00 (03:14):
we were walking down
the hallway into the theater and
I looked at you and I was like Ialmost thought I had my
sunglasses on instead of myregular glasses like it was that
dark and hard to see
SPEAKER_02 (03:23):
so that's probably
why we didn't sit on our normal
end because we could not see andI knew like your mom like she
can't walk very well in thedaylight light like we need to
make sure she's gonna be that'snot saying that's not mean i'm
just saying that's not mean i'mjust being respectful so i want
to make sure that no one's gonnayou know trip and fall up these
(03:44):
stairs so we didn't go all theway down to the other end like
we normally do but we like to beat the end just in case we have
to pee etc so dark theater wesit down no one's in it set the
scene
SPEAKER_00 (03:58):
well yeah because
I've got my hands up because I'm
doing my righty lefty here rightnow we're usually right sides
yes of the seat of these forthis theater particular theater
yes sitters like we sit on theright side so if the aisle if
the if the hallway dumps us ontothe right side we just go
straight up and sit down if thehallway dumps us on the left
side we walk across go over sitdown it's a thing just let us be
(04:19):
we've been this way all of ourlives theater
SPEAKER_02 (04:21):
though
SPEAKER_00 (04:22):
yeah it's just the
way it is but for like hope said
because it was dark we didn't dothat we went up Ooh, I do need
SPEAKER_02 (04:29):
to remind our
listeners, because they probably
aren't in small towns, thisparticular theater, you don't
pick out your seat beforehand.
I feel like all the theaters, like Jane's, like Regal,
Cinemark, AMC, now you pickwhere your seats are.
This is, you buy the ticket, yougo and you find a seat.
SPEAKER_00 (04:44):
Which is why we got
there so early.
Yes.
Because it was a Friday night,Superman was dropping, so we
kind of anticipated it might bebusy.
Yeah.
So we sit down, and a coupleminutes go by, and we're fine.
We're just having a good time.
It's not just us.
It's awesome.
It's great.
We're talking.
Nobody's in there.
So then a buffalo herd comesinto the theater, stumbles up
(05:07):
the stairs, and proceeds tostand.
Hope is sitting on the aisle, and she...
They come up...
Did the guy say something toyou?
SPEAKER_02 (05:18):
Yes! What did he
say?
He was saying it to all of us,but he and I made eye contact.
He goes, oh, way to take up allthe seats, guys.
And I'm like, looking aroundlike that.
You know that meme with that kidwhere he's like, ooh! And I'm
like...
There's like a whole theater.
And I just went, you know howyou do like that Chandler's work
laugh, like the fake laugh.
SPEAKER_00 (05:37):
Let me ask you a
benefit of the doubt question.
You
SPEAKER_02 (05:39):
were just glaring at
him.
SPEAKER_00 (05:40):
Do you think because
it was so dark and because their
group had so many people in itthat maybe he thought we were
part of their group that gotthere before them?
SPEAKER_02 (05:48):
No, I do not.
I think it was main charactersyndrome and he thought he was
being funny.
But I'm not sure if he thoughthe was being funny based upon
what would happen next.
You just kind of gave him alook.
SPEAKER_01 (05:59):
I
SPEAKER_02 (06:00):
fake Your mom and
Hannah, I think, were just
oblivious because they weretrying to figure out their snack
situation.
I'm not really sure.
He was just like, way to take upall the seats, guys.
And I was like, yeah.
SPEAKER_00 (06:10):
So then he just
proceeds to stand there.
SPEAKER_02 (06:12):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_00 (06:12):
And more people from
his group start coming up, and a
few of them file into the aislebehind us.
And it's clear that this aislein particular was the one they
wanted.
SPEAKER_02 (06:21):
Yeah, it's like
Sheldon with his spot on the Big
Bang Theory.
Like, he was almost like, hejust, like you said, he just
stood there after he made thatjoke, which now I'm thinking
wasn't a joke.
Like, as if, like, he waspanicked in his brain.
Like, where do I sit?
They're sitting in my usualspot.
And this has happened to usbefore with the whole, like,
in-seat thing.
where we've had to just pickanother end in another row
(06:43):
because someone has taken ourquote-unquote seats.
SPEAKER_00 (06:46):
Yeah, but we don't
talk to those people.
But we don't
SPEAKER_02 (06:48):
talk to the people.
We just roll with it, and thenwe grumble
SPEAKER_00 (06:50):
amongst each other
at a reasonable volume.
Yeah, but at a reasonablevolume, we grumble amongst
ourselves.
If we're sitting behind them,we'll give them stern looks, but
that's about it.
We're not going to try and runthem out, which is how I felt as
that group was shuffling pastus, and it had to be 15 minutes.
15 people.
This is one of the
SPEAKER_02 (07:09):
bigger theaters too,
because you know, like if they
put you in the smaller room forsmaller, this was one of this
particular movie theaters,bigger screens.
So it wasn't like we were, youknow, you must sit in the front
row, like where we were, like wewere towards the back.
SPEAKER_00 (07:23):
They were the second
group of people in the theater.
There was no one else in there, but us.
SPEAKER_02 (07:27):
So it wasn't like a
situation where they'd have to
like have, you know, their neckcraned up to be down front.
There was plenty of seating, plenty of
SPEAKER_00 (07:34):
seating.
If I may.
It was like I was using theurinal, and there were 10
urinals, and no one else wasusing them, and the guy walks in
and slides up right next to me.
Is
SPEAKER_02 (07:45):
that a vibe killer?
SPEAKER_00 (07:45):
No, it's not just a
vibe killer.
It's like hierarchy.
That is a foul.
You do not do that.
SPEAKER_02 (07:52):
So if you are in the
stall, which I'm assuming when
you're in the stall as a man, you're doing a number two Zs,
SPEAKER_01 (07:58):
correct?
SPEAKER_00 (07:59):
Yes.
SPEAKER_02 (08:00):
Have you ever either
asked or given toilet paper
under the stall to a stranger?
SPEAKER_00 (08:04):
There's no talking
in the stall.
Oh
SPEAKER_02 (08:06):
my gosh.
Women, I've accepted toiletpaper from a stranger before.
I've provided toilet paper for astranger.
I usually make sure that myparticular stall I use is
stocked with toilet paper.
So you're saying with the wholeurinal thing, it's not part of
the men culture to slip sometoilet paper under the stall?
SPEAKER_00 (08:23):
Absolutely not.
I've never...
Do
SPEAKER_02 (08:26):
you know
SPEAKER_00 (08:27):
women...
The only communication back andforth in the men's stalls is
laughter.
upon certain noises
SPEAKER_02 (08:35):
I've had some of my
best conversations with women
and like especially likebathrooms at like bars like when
you're you never get likebecause I don't really like to
be complimented by a man verymuch but it always just means
more when it comes from a womanand you it's just like the girl
these we build each other uplike oh cute outfit love your
hair you look so pretty you lookso cute my
SPEAKER_00 (08:57):
understanding of the
the correct etiquette men you
can correct me if I'm wrong ifyou are in the stall doing a
number two and they're is notoilet paper is that you sit
there for an appropriate amountof time until the stalls around
you are empty.
Accept your fate.
Pants up.
Go to the other stall and grabtoilet paper.
Ew, but
SPEAKER_02 (09:13):
then you would get
your underwears dirty if you put
your pants
SPEAKER_00 (09:15):
up.
You have to accept your fate.
It's never happened to me, so...
Thank
SPEAKER_02 (09:19):
goodness!
SPEAKER_00 (09:20):
It's never happened
SPEAKER_03 (09:22):
to me.
UNKNOWN (09:22):
Okay.
SPEAKER_00 (09:23):
We got a little off
course here.
Superman, the Supermanexperience.
So the Buffalo crew finallyherds their way into the seats
behind us.
SPEAKER_02 (09:32):
Directly behind
SPEAKER_00 (09:33):
us.
I think they ended up in thesame aisle as us, too.
on the other end of the row, andthey were taking up some of the
row behind them.
See,
SPEAKER_02 (09:42):
I didn't notice that
they ended up on the same row.
Because at the beginning, whenthey sat down directly, directly
behind us, huffing and puffingand kicking our seats and
laughing and squealing and justcompletely like as if no one
existed in this room but them, Iwas like, why don't they just go
to the other end?
So eventually, when their crew, because they had more of them,
file in.
(10:02):
These were not teenagers, by theway.
This was not Gen Z.
They were probably millennials, maybe some Xers amongst them.
So I feel like I have to callthat out.
I know the Gen Z stare is a realthing, but I would have rather
had the Gen Z stare than thisloudness surrounding me.
So these were not teenagersbecause I feel like people are
going to assume they'reteenagers.
They weren't.
SPEAKER_00 (10:22):
No, they were not
using inside voice.
SPEAKER_02 (10:25):
The preteens that
were at the Taylor Swift movie
that we went to behaved betterthan these group of adults.
SPEAKER_00 (10:31):
They just were
having this loudest conversation
possible.
And then, of course, I'm in asituation where I'm sitting
between you and my mother andboth of you are trying to talk
to me at the same time aboutdifferent things.
And so I probably just shut downinto Gen Z stare at the screen
trying to just compile all theinformation.
Yeah, yeah.
(10:53):
So their cult leader walks inand they just start screaming
his name at the top of theirlungs.
UNKNOWN (10:59):
Loudly.
SPEAKER_00 (11:00):
through the theater
at this point at this point and
by the way now there are otherpeople in the theater so they
start looking back and they'relooking back and we're sitting
close enough to these people andnow it seems like we're with the
loud group I don't think the
SPEAKER_02 (11:12):
previews had started
yet but the commercials
definitely had well that at thatpoint when they scream loudly I
leaned over you and your mom andI looked at your sister because
originally we thought aboutseeing the new Jurassic Park
movie and I was like maybe weshould have seen Jurassic Park
Hannah and the girl behind meclearly heard me she's like I
promise that we'll be quiet whenthe movie begins I was like be
(11:34):
quiet now and I was like andthen the people that sat in
front of us kids now this iswhere I will have to call out
the teens y'all got to tell yourchildren lay off the Axe body
spray I could smell it in myhair Saturday morning pungent at
one point I'm like what is thatsmell my nostrils are burning
that was I noticed about halfwaythrough the movie I was like
(11:56):
Daniel what's that smell what'sthat smell and you're like how
are you just now smelling
SPEAKER_00 (12:00):
Yeah, I smelled it
as soon as he walked up the
steps.
That kid, by the way, wasn'twatching the movie.
Oh, yeah.
He was playing some sort ofsoccer game on his phone.
And then the other
SPEAKER_02 (12:06):
kid beside him
was...
SPEAKER_00 (12:07):
Bouncing up and
down.
SPEAKER_02 (12:08):
Bouncing up and down
in his seat the entire time.
SPEAKER_00 (12:11):
He just likes to
bounce.
SPEAKER_02 (12:15):
My kid does
SPEAKER_00 (12:16):
not.
He just
SPEAKER_02 (12:17):
likes to
SPEAKER_00 (12:19):
jump.
The thing is, so the moviewas...
was full like it was bumping butit wasn't that full
SPEAKER_02 (12:26):
it was not it was
just full in that like if I
could have the security footagefrom that like I want roll the
tapes like you could it's gonnalook like we were all in one big
group because there was plentyof seating down front that again
wasn't this front seat like cramyour neck plenty of stuff off to
the side it was really everybodyjust clumped in on top of us
front of us side of us behind us
SPEAKER_00 (12:47):
there were four rows
behind us
SPEAKER_02 (12:50):
yeah
SPEAKER_00 (12:50):
and they could have
taken up And so...
SPEAKER_02 (12:54):
So anyway, you're
saying that your mom and I both
kept trying
SPEAKER_00 (12:56):
to...
You guys...
And that...
Okay, so...
We'd be
SPEAKER_02 (12:59):
like, who's this?
SPEAKER_00 (13:00):
Yeah, that didn't
stop when the movie started.
Like, you guys were all...
The whole movie, it was like, you guys were trying to...
But then I'd be
SPEAKER_02 (13:06):
like, that's
Nicholas Holtz.
And
SPEAKER_00 (13:07):
she'd be like, oh,
okay.
She was like, who's playing LexLuthor?
And I'd like lean over.
And you lean over.
You heard her, and you said,Nicholas Holtz.
And I said, nobody you'd haveheard of, Mom.
Because she wouldn't knowwhere...
It
SPEAKER_02 (13:18):
reminded me of,
like, that episode of The Office
where they're at dinner, andDwight's, like, leaning in.
to talk because he's seated fromdifferent in the group so I'm
like leaning over you
SPEAKER_00 (13:27):
yeah
SPEAKER_02 (13:30):
And then I noticed,
too, that I almost lit into you.
And then I realized it wasn'tyou.
I was like, Daniel, you've gotto get the notices off your
Apple Watch.
Because I kept seeing somebody'sApple Watch light up.
It was your mom's.
SPEAKER_00 (13:40):
It wasn't me.
I always turn mine.
There's a little thing.
And
SPEAKER_02 (13:42):
then you were like,
I've noticed
SPEAKER_00 (13:44):
that, too.
They got the little button thathas the two little masks to the
theater mode.
And I always turn that on whenI'm in the theater.
I
SPEAKER_02 (13:50):
was like, who's
Apple?
I was like, Daniel, turn yourApple Watch off.
And you're like, it's not me.
SPEAKER_00 (13:54):
She also checked
Facebook twice while we were
SPEAKER_02 (13:56):
watching.
I think she liked it, though.
She had fun.
SPEAKER_00 (13:58):
She laughed.
Yeah, she had fun.
I think she had fun.
She
SPEAKER_02 (13:59):
had a good time.
SPEAKER_00 (14:00):
Speaking of that,
all of that aside, we did
actually see the new Supermanmovie.
Yes.
What did you think?
SPEAKER_02 (14:08):
Aside from the
theater experience, which I
would give a great F, I thoughtit was a really good movie.
I will say that it felt like Istarted in the middle of a
movie.
Yeah.
And I'm glad in a way because...
because I didn't need anotherorigin story.
I feel like most people have atleast a decent understanding of
(14:30):
who Superman is, who his villainis, that Lois is his love
interest, the whole kryptonitething.
I feel like most peopleunderstand the basics and the
details, and James Gunn madethat so like assuming that if
you're seeing this movie youknow all that but it was a
little jarring like because itwas like I really just felt like
I started like literally in themiddle of a movie like a part
(14:51):
two of a movie but once Istarted to get the flow and the
vibe with it it was fine it wasvery like action action action
like there was no I think we alltalked at the end of the movie
there was really no good likepause moment to go to the
bathroom if you would have topee in that movie I know there
are actually people that reviewmovies and always say like this
is when you should go in thismovie.
(15:12):
I can't think of a single scenebecause it was so like boom,
boom, boom, next scene.
That's not a detriment, by theway.
No, that's not a detriment.
I actually like that.
It's a pacing dream for me.
I did have to kind of settle inand like, oh, oh, oh, okay.
This is the pace of the moviebecause it felt like just on the
(15:34):
ground running, I'm in the plot, and I felt like I dropped in in
the middle of the movie.
But yeah I thought it was reallygood.
I feel like I don't rememberlike hating Man of Steel but it
was so dark and it just fromeverything that I've been told
about like the character ofSuperman like that's not really
who Superman is and I felt likeI think Amy Adams is a good
(15:54):
actress.
I think Kate Bosworth who was inthe Brandon Roth Superman's from
like a long time ago is a decentactress.
Those two were not lowest forme.
I feel like we have not reallyhad a good low.
I know I did not watch the CWshow that's recent so I don't
know anything about that lowest.
I only saw her like for twoseconds in the crisis crossover
so I haven't really seen Loisvery much since Erica Durant's
(16:15):
from Smallville so I feel likeit's been a while since we've
had a good Lois and Rachel Iknew when they cast her That she
was going to be a good Lois.
SPEAKER_00 (16:22):
That was like a slam
dunk.
SPEAKER_02 (16:24):
And it
SPEAKER_00 (16:24):
absolutely was.
As soon as I saw her cast forthat, I was like, oh, that's
going to be perfect.
She's going to bring the
SPEAKER_02 (16:29):
attitude.
I thought they had goodchemistry.
My biggest complaint was Ididn't get enough of Lois.
I didn't get enough of the DailyPlanet scenes with Jimmy.
I'm just thinking of the suitsguy.
SPEAKER_00 (16:43):
Oh, Perry.
Robert Zane.
Perry.
Harry.
Okay.
Perry with a P.
Perry.
SPEAKER_02 (16:48):
Perry.
I could have used more of thatbecause we really didn't get a
lot of Clark.
no
SPEAKER_00 (16:53):
we didn't at all
SPEAKER_02 (16:54):
at all really so I
would have liked to have seen
more from Lois and I'm hoping ifwe do more movies we will get
more from that so that would beprobably like it's not even a
criticism it's just like oh Iwould have liked to have seen
more of this I've never seen adog that reminds me so much of
our sweet little Marvin likeCrypto like even then you told
me like he's based on JamesGunn's actual dog that has
(17:15):
Schnauzer mix in him and we havea mini Schnauzer and I think
James Gunn is his dog is likepart standard Schnauzer but I
could definitely see some of thecharacteristics and some of the
way it looked, but I'm talkingto just, you know, the whole
vibe.
Like I think you and I looked ateach other at one point.
We're like, Oh wow.
So crypto is Marvin, huh?
Like every
SPEAKER_00 (17:31):
dog, every like dogs
in movies tend to be really well
behaved and like doing whatthey're supposed to do because
it's, because in most of thekind of, if it's an actual dog,
not a CGI dog, you know, there,it's really hard to get dogs to
be the way to act the way cryptoacted.
But because it was a CGI dog,um, It was really striking to
(17:53):
me.
Every time the Crypto was onscreen, I was like, this feels
like my dog.
I know this is a CGI dog.
SPEAKER_02 (18:00):
Crypto's a menace,
but in a good way.
SPEAKER_00 (18:02):
Yeah, I know this is
a CGI dog, but there was some
authenticity to that that feltreally real compared to other
actor dogs that are just sittingand waiting on their commands.
SPEAKER_02 (18:11):
So what else did I
like about it before you go?
Soundtracks.
James Gunn knows how to make akiller soundtrack for a movie.
He's going to go down in historyfor that.
I liked...
Obviously, Sean, his brother, got a cameo at the end.
And I think he's playing anactual important character,
right?
I thought that David, I don'tknow how to pronounce his last
name.
I thought he was a greatSuperman.
(18:32):
I will say that last year whenwe saw Twisters, obviously
everyone was talking about GlennPowell.
And I remember I was like, Ikind of like the other
Weatherman guy that's kind ofarrogant.
I was like, he's pretty cute.
And then we're like, oh, he'sgoing to be.
So we, of course, off to IMDb wego.
It's like, oh, he's going to bethe new Superman.
So I'm like, I feel in a waylike I've discovered him no just
kidding but like I already knewlike I was like oh he's gonna
(18:53):
look good and I just I reallythought it was very well done
the points of how goodjournalism matters kindness like
empathy like all these likevalues like were very well put
out in the movie and there's oneparticular speech that Clark
Superman makes and I sawsomething on TikTok that was
(19:16):
like this is like for men likethe Barbie movie speech where
she talks about being a womanlike this This could be like for
the guys, like all the good guysin the world that have felt like
that.
And I just thought that was areally moving speech.
And yeah, it was just a goodmovie.
Lex Luthor was crazy.
You know, the biggest hater I'veever met.
They didn't really explain whyhe hates Superman so much in
(19:38):
this, but it was very cartoony, villainy, like what I guess what
a lot of comic book fans reallywant from it.
So, hey, you know, they wenthard, and they went hard at it,
and I thought Nicholasdelivered.
I'm like, wow, I feel his hatredfor Superman, hardcore in this.
SPEAKER_00 (19:54):
They did a really
good job of making this villain
evil billionaire who's evil justbecause he's evil, which really
resonated with me in these timesthat we live in today.
UNKNOWN (20:04):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_02 (20:05):
And I guess they
called it Luther Corp, which is
kind of a wink to Smallvillebecause that's what they called
it in Smallville because JamesGunn actually brought that up.
And the actor that played Lex inSmallville had a bit role in
this.
I'm going to have to go back andrewatch it because I don't know
who he played because Iobviously missed that.
I didn't see that until the endand I just thought that was
cool.
(20:26):
But yeah, I thought it was agood movie.
I think it's probably the bestDC movie I've seen in quite
some, probably since The DarkKnight if I'm being honest I
think DC has kind of struggledto get that light-hearted vibe
that Marvel movies have.
They've really gone, like youwould go to DC for your dark,
your gritty movies, not your funsuperhero movies.
(20:47):
And this was fun.
SPEAKER_00 (20:48):
Yeah, it was fun.
I think they struggled becausethe Batman trilogy that
Christopher Nolan did was moredark and more realistic.
And I think they tried to makethat their template.
SPEAKER_01 (20:59):
Like their shtick.
SPEAKER_00 (21:00):
But the problem is,
that only really works with
Batman.
Because then you introduceSuperman, the guy that can fly
and the flash the guy who'sreally fast and none of that
stuff I don't think lives in aworld where realism is what
you're going for and so to shiftthe tone the way they did here I
think really worked well for themovie and overall like I like
(21:21):
this movie I thought it was agood movie I have a my
complaints about it are minor Ithink and I had this concern
when we started seeing trailersand casting announcements I
think they had way too many toobig of a cast and I I
SPEAKER_02 (21:35):
And
SPEAKER_00 (21:36):
for the amount of
cast they had, they did a really
good job of getting you tounderstand and to know who
everybody is.
I
SPEAKER_02 (21:43):
like the song with
Mr.
Terrific's
SPEAKER_00 (21:45):
part.
But you never really gotanything more than surface level
with them.
And the problem was thatincludes Lois.
And I really would have liked tohave had some more time with
Lois, some more time with ClarkKent, some more time with Jimmy
and that team, and maybe foregothe Justice gang.
I understand that he's trying toset up some other stuff with
(22:05):
this movie, and so that'sprobably why all that stuff got
jammed in there.
But I felt like, I think youcould have had a tighter movie
with a little bit more of a, nota slow pace, but a more
character-driven pace if youdumped that Justice gang story.
storyline
SPEAKER_02 (22:22):
now I did notice one
like it was a very blink and you
miss it line and I'm like whyhave they never included this in
other Superman movies because Iwatched an interview with James
Gunn where he was asked aboutthis particular line he's like
oh I didn't make that up that'slike in the comics the glasses
that Clark Clark Kent wearsthey're like oh you put those
glasses on it like it distortsyour appearance to other people
(22:43):
because the big joke that I'vealways heard I was like oh how
does everybody not realize it'shim when all he's doing is
wearing like a different outfitwith glasses on ha ha ha And
like this one, when the pictureswere coming out, it was like,
oh, at least Clark Kent has adifferent hairstyle when he
wears the glasses.
And I'm like, so I just thoughtthat maybe James Gunn like wrote
that in to kind of like off playthe joke.
And he was like asked about it.
(23:04):
He's like, that's in like thecomics, I guess.
I don't again, I'm not like abig Superman girly.
So I had no idea.
But I'm like, that makes it alot more sense now.
SPEAKER_00 (23:15):
Yeah, I had never
heard that either.
So that must be a deep cut.
I'm not going to defend him toomuch.
That sounds like a deep cutthing to me.
SPEAKER_02 (23:21):
I like it that he
put that in there, though.
So we obviously, Jimmy knowsthat Lois in this movie, that
Lois and Superman are together.
But they did not make it clearto me if Jimmy knew that Clark
was Superman.
No,
SPEAKER_00 (23:34):
it wasn't clear to
me that that was unknown either.
That
SPEAKER_02 (23:37):
was one of my
favorite parts of the movie
where Perry was like, so howlong have these two been a
thing?
And he's like, about threemonths.
Because these people arejournalists.
Of course they're going to know.
SPEAKER_00 (23:46):
Yeah, they're going
to figure that stuff out.
They're going to follow clues.
They're going to get that.
But overall, really good movie.
really good start to whateverJames Gunn is going to do with
the DC heroes I have a lot moreoptimism for DC movies going
forward with this tone becauseagain outside of Batman I just
don't think the serious toneworks with DC I think you have
to lean into the campiness Ithink you have to lean into the
(24:07):
fun and all that kind of stuffand you're going to come out
with a better having a bettertime
SPEAKER_02 (24:12):
and you can make a
good balance because I think
Marvel has struck a good balancewith what they've built I think
I'm excited for the Supergirlmovie we got a little hint for
that a little sizzle there atthe end
SPEAKER_00 (24:25):
so overall I think
if you're looking to go see a
fun movie this summer umSuperman's up there.
I think you need to go see it.
If you're having a little bit ofa comic book movie exhaustion, I
think this is kind of a nicepalate cleanser, to be honest.
I think this will really kind ofgive you a little bit more
motivation to go see somethinglike Fantastic Four later this
(24:47):
month or going into the winterand seeing what comes out
because I think they did areally good job.
I thought the messaging wasnice.
I really honestly like some ofthe undertones that the movie
touches on of things that aregoing on in the real world I'm
kind of shocked some of thatstuff was allowed to be in the
movie, to be honest with you.
But it was really, really well
SPEAKER_02 (25:08):
done.
There's been some criticismsabout it saying that it's, you
know, quote unquote, like, woke.
I don't.
SPEAKER_00 (25:15):
I'm not even talking
about that.
I'm talking about the allegorywith the other country and Lex
Luthor.
SPEAKER_02 (25:21):
Because I was going
to say the whole woke thing,
don't buy into that.
I feel like people that saidthat didn't see it.
Yeah, correct.
If being kind and empathetic iswoke, then I fear you might be
more of the villain.
I'm
SPEAKER_00 (25:32):
talking about the
plot line with Lex and the ruler
of another country and theallusions to things maybe going
on in the real world.
They
SPEAKER_02 (25:38):
didn't really drone
on that a lot.
That's what I said.
When I felt like I was placed inthe middle of the movie, all
that conflict was going on, Ifelt like they kind of was like,
this is what we're fightingagainst right now, and this is
why.
But that really wasn't dwelledupon.
on
SPEAKER_01 (25:51):
no it wasn't
SPEAKER_02 (25:52):
now I do have a
question for you ever since I
have known you you have been I'mnot gonna say hater per se but
you've always told me time andtime again that you don't really
like Superman it's not yourfavorite he's not your favorite
you would go for the basicanswer of you know Batman which
most people choose for DC butyou've always been like a
Superman like to the point youhave you have been maybe it's a
(26:15):
hater light on them but you didwant to see this movie obviously
we saw Man of Steel I don'tthink you hated Man of Steel but
You were just like, eh.
But Superman has always been, like, you've been vocal about
that you're not a Superman guy.
Has that changed with thismovie?
SPEAKER_00 (26:31):
No.
Okay.
This is the best Superman movieI've ever seen, and I think this
is the best, from myperspective, the best depiction
of Superman.
But for me, Superman is still abig problem if you're trying to
tell stories and what you've gotthis guy over here who literally
cannot die, who literally...
can fly and shoot laser beamsout of his eyes.
(26:53):
He has all of the correct toolsto be an unstoppable force.
Except
SPEAKER_01 (26:59):
kryptonite.
SPEAKER_00 (27:00):
And so they had to
make up one deus ex machina
thing to allow him to be hurt.
But you've got to have theability to get this kryptonite.
So if there's no kryptonite onEarth, nobody can stop Superman.
SPEAKER_02 (27:12):
But I think in this,
they did a good job showing that
it wasn't just the kryptonite, that he was hurt by what people
would think of him.
Sure,
SPEAKER_00 (27:21):
right.
And that's the stuff you'vealways got to use when you're
doing a Superman movie.
I just think that at the end ofthe day, it's a character that
is so overpowered, it's veryuninteresting to me personally.
But this was still a good movie.
SPEAKER_02 (27:34):
Who would be the
equivalent of Superman in the
Marvel Universe
SPEAKER_00 (27:37):
then?
Oh, there's a couple of them, but they don't get nearly as
SPEAKER_01 (27:39):
all-consuming
SPEAKER_00 (27:42):
as that.
I think actually that BillPullman's son's character from
Thunderbolts is kind of one ofthose that can be that strong of
a character.
I think Scarlet Witch is upthere to a certain extent, but I
don't think any– there are acouple analogs, but I don't know
exactly who they are on theMarvel side.
SPEAKER_02 (27:58):
Well, that's a good
way to draw on my next question
for you.
We have seen– I consider Maystill basically summer.
So we have seen two so far,Thunderbolts or the new
Avengers, if you will, and wehave seen Superman.
Which of those two movies didyou like the best?
They are very different, butthey're both fun.
SPEAKER_00 (28:17):
Thunderbolts still
for me.
I like Thunderbolts.
SPEAKER_02 (28:20):
agree as well and I
don't know if it's because like
I've never really played intothe DC versus Marvel thing but I
do really like the MarvelUniverse
SPEAKER_00 (28:27):
I will say it's a
lot closer than I thought it was
going to be
SPEAKER_02 (28:31):
yeah
SPEAKER_00 (28:32):
because I didn't
realize they put a lot of
character and heart into thatSuperman movie which you needed
they needed to do that but theypulled it off and so it is a lot
closer than I thought it wouldbe but it's still Thunderbolts
SPEAKER_02 (28:42):
I agree for me it's
still very close and like I said
I've never really been like Ithink the DC Marvel fanboys
super excited hero movie comicbook wars are stupid I'm just
gonna say it I think it's dumb Ithink you just like and people
just enjoy things enjoy thingsbut I would say like with these
set of movies I've alwaysgravitated more from what I've
gotten from Marvel and the superthis Superman movie felt closer
(29:05):
to what we get from Marvel forme but I'm still gonna go with
Thunderbolts I felt like eventhough it's not wasn't I guess
not very successful at the boxoffice I don't know if people
have like you said superherofatigue I thought Thunderbolts
did a great job of being fun butstill also being serious
touching on mental health and Ijust I don't know it was just
that was it was a really funmovie I think of the two of them
(29:25):
though if you you needed moreknowledge of what's going on in
the Marvel Universe to be ableto enjoy Thunderbolts.
Whereas if you just have a basicunderstanding of who Superman
is, even though I said it's likeyou're starting in the middle of
the movie, you're probably goingto enjoy Superman more.
For example, if we had broughtyour mom with us to
Thunderbolts, she would havebeen extremely confused.
(29:46):
No, I agree.
Whereas I feel like Superman, she was able to jump right into.
And probably even your sister, who I guess doesn't like Marvel
movies.
UNKNOWN (29:55):
Yeah.
SPEAKER_01 (29:55):
But
SPEAKER_02 (29:58):
I'll be really
interested to see how Fantastic
Four goes because I think whenI've been seeing the previews
for all of them, that's the onethat I'm thinking I'm expecting
to be the best one.
And now the bar has been setreally high.
Can
SPEAKER_00 (30:10):
I say something
about the Fantastic Four?
SPEAKER_02 (30:12):
Sure.
I
SPEAKER_00 (30:13):
never really cared
for them either.
I know a lot of Marvel fans
SPEAKER_02 (30:19):
are
SPEAKER_00 (30:20):
like, a lot of
Marvel
SPEAKER_02 (30:21):
fans are
SPEAKER_00 (30:22):
like, yeah, exactly,
are hinging all of the MCU on
this Fantastic Four movie doingwell.
And I agree, it needs to.
But I just, nothing, all theiterations of the Fantastic Four
or comic books or anything Iknow about them, I'm always just
like, eh.
SPEAKER_02 (30:37):
Well, I'm excited
for the cast, and I think it
looks good.
No, I did not see the mostrecent one with Miles Teller, I
think, in Michael B.
Jordan.
I didn't see that one, but
SPEAKER_01 (30:46):
I
SPEAKER_02 (30:47):
did not think the
old ones were that bad, where
Chris Evans was in it.
I thought they were perfectlyentertaining.
SPEAKER_00 (30:53):
I think they were
being held up against Spider-Man
1 and Spider-Man 2, and there'svery few comic book movies...
even today even after all theyears of Marvel movies that have
been great there's very few anycomic book movies that can hold
up to the greatness ofSpider-Man and Spider-Man 2
SPEAKER_02 (31:11):
I'm just saying
based on the preview for all
three of these movies which thatreminds me I have something else
to say before we close thisconversation based on the
preview for all three of thesemovies the Fantastic Four
preview grabbed me the mostbased on previews alone but now
I feel the bar has been set highthat being said before we close
this Superman movie back to themovie experience why on earth
(31:33):
were we given a preview forCaptain America Brave New World
coming soon to theaters onFebruary 14th I'm like do I have
to go back into time I thoughtwe were getting maybe like a
preview for Disney Plus and I'mlike no they're giving us a
preview for Captain America amovie that came out in February
SPEAKER_00 (31:49):
when that trailer
started I started going through
my head all the things that hadhappened to us with this group
coming in and sitting behind usand being so weird I was like
did we go into the right theateror is this like a private party
group and they're We're justgoing to watch a bunch of old
trailers and talk to each other.
Like, I don't know what's goingon, but then, then we got a
fantastic four trailer and thenthe movie started.
So it was fine.
SPEAKER_02 (32:10):
It was, you and I
are like, what?
Even if we had gotten aThunderbolts trailer, I don't
think I would have batted an eyebecause that was just in May,
which I guess, you know, now.
SPEAKER_00 (32:20):
No, I would have.
I'm sorry.
The trailer for the movie shouldstop airing the moment the
movie, the trailer comes out orthe movie comes out.
SPEAKER_02 (32:28):
It was just, it was,
and because we had, it wasn't
that long ago that we saw thelatest Captain America movie.
It was even weirder for me.
I can't believe I almost forgot
SPEAKER_00 (32:36):
to say that.
And it wasn't any good.
And I was like, I don't want tosee anything about this anymore.
Okay, real quick here, turningover to TV.
Before we get to the main topicof today's conversation.
Believe it or not, that wasn'tthe main topic.
Believe it or not, we didbriefly want to talk about It's
Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Season 17 has kicked off.
(32:57):
And the very first episode ofthat season was the other
crossover side with AbbottElementary.
SPEAKER_02 (33:02):
Yes, we watched the
Abbott Elementary episode.
featuring the Always Sunny cast, but I don't even know when that
was.
It
SPEAKER_00 (33:10):
was in February or
January.
It was early.
SPEAKER_02 (33:12):
Early in the year.
I've
SPEAKER_00 (33:18):
watched a lot more
It's Always Sunny than you have.
And I've watched a lot
SPEAKER_02 (33:21):
more Abbott than
you.
SPEAKER_00 (33:23):
And I think that you
forgot what It's Always Sunny in
Philadelphia is.
SPEAKER_02 (33:28):
I've seen some of
Always Sunny.
I've seen quite a bit of thefirst season, actually, because
I don't think Danny DeVito comeson until later.
And then I've seen, for somereason when we were watching
Christmas episodes you decidedto include some of the always
sunny Christmas episodes.
That was a treat.
So I guess I had forgotten justhow exactly how the tone is and
i forgot that they can like iguess like cuss on this show
(33:51):
because on abbott you're that'son abc
SPEAKER_01 (33:53):
yeah
SPEAKER_02 (33:54):
so we get to hear
our sweet little janine which
i'm sure quinta had a lot of funwith what she called d and f-ing
c-u-n-t
SPEAKER_00 (34:03):
yep i think that's
the moment where you were like
pause and i was like did youforget what it's always sunny is
SPEAKER_02 (34:09):
because we find in
the always or the abbott version
of this crossover event d's likeflirting with Gregory the whole
time and it really bugs Janinebut then we find out why Dee
decided that that's how she canbe on camera more and I was like
you know that makes sense to memore now why she would do that
not that I'm justifying I guessher actions but then we have
(34:29):
just getting to hear the Abbottespecially like the character
like Janine say it would onlybeen better if like Mrs.
Howard would have said that butthat would have probably been
out of her
SPEAKER_00 (34:38):
character yeah
SPEAKER_02 (34:39):
I don't know.
I don't even know what to say
SPEAKER_00 (34:41):
about it.
The gang got up to hijinks inthe school.
They were trying to like...
SPEAKER_02 (34:46):
Steal copper.
SPEAKER_00 (34:47):
Steal copper pipes.
They were trying to film likea...
Oh, gosh.
No, no, no.
They were trying to do anupdated version of We Didn't
Start the Fire.
Except they did not know thatFall Out Boy had already done
it.
And so suddenly they got reallyupset about that.
SPEAKER_02 (35:02):
And then they were
talking about education about...
something that i'm not evengoing to bring up because i
don't want to offend anybody buti'm like that's where i was also
like whoa i forgot that thisshow did that and it's still i
think the way they did it madesense because i was low-key kind
of hoping that we'd have atleast melissa and people like go
to their bar
SPEAKER_01 (35:20):
yeah
SPEAKER_02 (35:21):
which they did at
the very end right where they
invited them and they're likewhat do you they're like we
don't have any water we don'thave any of this on tap we have
nothing like what do you havehere so that begs the question
how are these people still inbusiness that's what i'd like to
know as somebody who watchesalways sunny how
SPEAKER_00 (35:34):
do they even remain
in business it doesn't come
SPEAKER_02 (35:36):
up but I thought
like the whole episode for the
crossover would be focused inthe bar and it wasn't it was
just the school and it was likeAva rolling the footage about
what they had done and if you'rea fan of both shows I feel like
it was pretty good it was just afun little crossover that they
got to do I'm glad they did itand that they could pull it off
SPEAKER_00 (35:57):
yeah alright with
that out of the way it's his
time we have completed SquidGame Season three, it's over.
At least no more Korean SquidGame.
SPEAKER_02 (36:08):
Yeah, an American
show is happening.
SPEAKER_00 (36:13):
I kind of want to
just set the tone that I didn't
like season three as much as theother two seasons.
SPEAKER_02 (36:18):
I can agree with
that.
I know we learned our lesson.
You don't watch Squid Game onvacation.
We tried to watch the first twoon Disney when we were at
Disney.
And those first two episodescame out gun blazing with
everything that went down.
Really
SPEAKER_00 (36:34):
big time.
I'm
SPEAKER_02 (36:35):
going to agree with
you that I felt like season
three of the seasons was theweakest one.
I can tell that it was meant tobe part of season two.
So that's why I'm glad we didn'thave to wait.
Because I think season twodropped right around Christmas.
Yeah.
And because we just picked it upon New Year's, we didn't have to
wait very long.
SPEAKER_00 (36:51):
Speaking of which,
before we go any further, if you
guys want to hear our thoughtson Squid Game season one and
Squid Game season two, go backto episode 91, Adult Snow Day,
and episode 92, Coffee Game.
And
SPEAKER_02 (37:03):
also, this is your
reminder, once again, that we
are a spoiler podcast.
So if you have not finished theseason yet and do not want major
spoilers, go ahead and hit thatchapter marker and skip ahead or
listen at your own risk.
SPEAKER_00 (37:17):
I don't feel like
anything that happened is even a
major spoiler.
Like, I get it.
If I had known how
SPEAKER_02 (37:23):
it ended, that would
have been a major spoiler for
me.
SPEAKER_00 (37:25):
I have a couple days
to think on it, and I just don't
feel like anything...
They didn't throw anything at uslike Season 1 with Player 1 or
Season 2 with Player 1 like theydid...
Like at the end of this, like, this is just like, I think if
you would have asked me to sitdown and say, how does this end?
Oh, a baby's growing.
(37:46):
Okay.
But like, if you had sat me downbefore season three and said,
how's this thing going to playout?
Give me five ways this couldplay out.
I think I could have got prettyclose.
SPEAKER_02 (37:56):
I agree.
But for me, it's still about theexecution, like how things
happened.
That would have, I would havebeen annoyed if that had been
spoiled for me.
I
SPEAKER_00 (38:04):
understand that.
SPEAKER_02 (38:05):
I think that when it
comes down to it with this show,
season one is one of thoseseasons, or I'm not going to say
it's perfect, but it's close toperfect, and that you could have
ended it there.
SPEAKER_00 (38:17):
Probably, in my
opinion, after seeing all of the
way things have gone, theyshould have ended it there.
SPEAKER_02 (38:21):
That being said...
I think it ended.
The end was, I'm going to saythe end was good.
It was sad.
It was tragic.
But I figured out, you know, inthe second episode three, I was
like, oh, we're not getting ahappy ending at all with this.
And really, at one point, I lookat you because they're zooming
in on the VIPs.
Those are like the rich peoplethat come watch these messed up
games.
(38:41):
And I'm like, is this play aboutus?
Because we're sitting herewatching it like, oh, now
they're player 222 had her babyin the baby game.
has to compete in the games aswell like whoa and like one of
the VIPs like makes a similarremark and I'm like I felt like
that's kind of almost meta in away and I think the message of
the show ultimately was tryingto portray in all the seasons
(39:05):
was that you know one moneygreed is the root of all evil
and people will do just aboutanything to get it but it's not
just that it's about survivingin these hard times a lot of
these people that were throwninto these squid games they
didn't have a lot of money theyhad fallen on really hard times
and they were desperate to tryto do anything to make it ahead
in a world that really doesn'twant to help people.
SPEAKER_01 (39:25):
Correct.
SPEAKER_02 (39:26):
Especially when it
comes to finances, that really,
that dog-eat-dog kind of likementality.
SPEAKER_00 (39:31):
Not only the world
that doesn't want to help
people, that a world that seesyour...
Almost
SPEAKER_02 (39:35):
scoffs at
SPEAKER_00 (39:36):
it.
A world that sees your troublesas your own moral failings.
Because you're not doing well...
There must be something wrongwith you that you aren't doing
well.
There's something morallybankrupt about you that you have
failed here.
It's not that there's a systemout there working against you.
SPEAKER_02 (39:55):
And I felt like all
the seasons really tried to show
that.
And then also, like I said, people will do almost anything.
But at the end of the day, thegames are still going to go on.
You can't change the world, butyou can change us.
yourself and how you see thingsand what you do even if you know
the games are the game peopleare always going to be crappy
(40:15):
the world is going to be a badplace but
SPEAKER_00 (40:17):
the games will
continue the games will
SPEAKER_02 (40:18):
continue but you can
change what you do, and I think
that's what they really tried toshow with 456.
So our player 456, we are goingto make sure we use his name,
456.
I can't pronounce his name inthe show, so we're going to say
456.
We're really going to try not tocall him his name from the
acolyte like we tend to do.
If you're not new here, we willcall people names from shows
(40:39):
we've seen like 30 years ago.
He was fresh in our minds fromthe acolyte.
Acolyte should have gotten morethan one season.
Anyway, 456.
I feel like for me here, let'sjust go ahead and call it what
it is.
456 does not make it out ofthese games.
He could have if he was a badperson, but he ultimately does
the right thing.
He makes a speech at the end, says, you know, we're not
(41:01):
horses.
You know, we were human beings.
And he lays the baby who hisplayer 222 has entrusted in him
because she obviously she didn'tmake it through.
And the baby ends up being like, you know, the quote unquote
winner of the game.
So he could have won if he waswilling to There was multiple
times he could have won.
When the frontman gave him theknife, he could have stabbed
people in the sleep.
He could have won then.
(41:21):
He could have kicked the babyoff the side of the platform in
the final game and won.
But he...
chose not to and for me when Ithink about it going back at the
end of season one you see himhe's won the games at the end of
season one and he is supposed tobe catching a flight to LA to
see his daughter his daughterhas moved to LA with her mother
(41:41):
and her stepfather and he makesa decision he makes a choice
that he's going to try to findlike the guy that would try to
like the recruiter I guess we'llcall him that to get people into
the games because he wants tofigure out what's going on with
squid game he wants to shut itdown and I think in that moment
four five six to Yeah, I agree.
(42:15):
He who did he he actually and hedoes kill one player with his
bare hands.
That is player 388.
Yeah, that is our boy that hepretended like he was in the
Marines.
And then he in the finale ofseason two when they were trying
to rise up against the guards.
He didn't go back to get likethe rest of the ammo because he
just freaked out.
(42:35):
And as we all kind of– I thinkpeople were suspecting he might
not be a Marine, and he admittedthat.
And 456 kind of blames Player388 as it's his fault they
didn't finish the mission andit's his fault that his best
friend passed away.
And at this point, he thinks twoof his best friends passed away
because Player 1, also known asthe front man, didn't make it
back.
(42:55):
So these two people, hischildhood friend and his new
friend that he had found in thegames, are gone.
And I think he kind of freaksout there, and then he's– I
think he gets his mind back alittle bit when player 149, who
is everybody's sweet littlemother, ends up, you know,
offing herself.
Because in the previous episode, she had to kill her own son.
SPEAKER_00 (43:17):
Yeah.
She's been taking care of thebaby.
And she talks to 456 for alittle bit about, you know, that
you're the only person that canget this baby out of here.
Like basically begs him forhelp.
Yeah.
And so...
And then that was...
foreshadowing for what she wasgoing to do later that night,
which was, you know, end her ownlife because she couldn't deal
(43:39):
with the guilt of having to killher own son earlier in the
previous game.
SPEAKER_02 (43:43):
And when it comes to
that episode, that's the one
where we were like, we're notwatching anymore because that
happened in episode two ofseason three.
A lot of people are like, Ican't believe she would kill her
own son.
I believe that she did notchoose player 2-2-2 over her
son.
I think what happened was shesaw that her son...
(44:03):
felt like he had to kill Player222 to prove something, and she
decided to kill him because shedid not want to see him become a
killer himself.
I think that's why she made thatchoice in that moment, but
obviously that'd be agut-wrenching choice and
horribly difficult to live with, and it was just tragedy among
tragedy.
I'm going to say that thesaddest death for me personally
(44:25):
in Season 2 was Player 120.
Not only did she end up dyingwhen she could have easily...
She could have made it out ofthat game, the hide-and-seek
game.
But she went back to help theothers, kind of like her squad,
so to speak.
And...
she that means she also died inthe body that she didn't want to
be in because her plans was toget like the surgery and
(44:47):
everything so that just tragedyupon tragedy and player 333 the
baby daddy of player 222 is theone that ends up stabbing her he
had already killed someone hismission was accomplished because
he had the people that had tokill and the other people he
just I don't know like why hedid that and you see at that
point for me player 333 was deadto me I was like you just killed
(45:08):
one of my favorite charactersI'm never gonna trust you again
and I feel like player 333player 2-2-2 was like, I can
never trust you again either.
SPEAKER_00 (45:15):
Well, it turns out
you shouldn't have trusted him
because then you get to the lastgame and he was going to throw
that baby off.
SPEAKER_02 (45:21):
Well, when we have
the baby, so player 2-2-2 has
already passed because shecouldn't complete the jump rope
game.
He...
If you notice, he just startseating the meals.
They always bring them the fancymeal because they want to get
them all rested, all well-fedbefore the final games to make
it better.
And if you notice, he startedeating immediately.
(45:42):
Four, five, six didn't starteating until one of the guards
came out and fed that baby.
And a lot of people, there's alot of mixed feelings on 333
online.
A lot of people are like, oh, hewas actually going to end up
saving the baby at the end.
He was just trying to get rid of456.
So I disagree.
You have that flashback andpeople showed at the beginning
of the season where she wastrying to call him and he
(46:02):
wouldn't answer.
And yeah, it was probablybecause he was trying to go to
Squid Game to get the moneyback.
I think all he ever cared aboutwas the money.
Do I think he developed like...
some feelings for her of coursei do but i don't i think he was
very self-serving and the factthat he hung that baby in that
sling over the side of that ireally think i i am on the side
(46:23):
of i don't think he would wasgoing to try to just off four
five six so he could savehimself and the baby i don't
think that's what he was doingmaybe i'm just not seeing the
good in people i don't know whatdo you think do you think there
was good in him no
SPEAKER_00 (46:35):
no i don't think so
at all i don't think there was
anything redeemable about him umi don't think he was good to
start with no i don't think hewas good to start with he was
going to be there to do what hehad to do to get out of there
with his life and his money andthat includes a baby that he
didn't seem to really care aboutuntil all of a sudden he needed
to care about it right it wasonly he only revealed he was the
father when it was convenientfor him to do so and it's
SPEAKER_02 (46:57):
like the little
details like about him going
ahead and eating the food noteven caring if the baby had
eaten yet that's where that'sjust those little details that
they put in for me and likecertain characters like I don't
remember his number but Son Woofrom the first season um I don't
think he was always bad.
I think the games really got tohim, corrupted him, and then at
the end, even though he wasterrible and killed off probably
(47:19):
my favorite character fromseason one.
I don't think at his core he wasa bad person, and I think 456
knew that.
That's just what the games doesto people.
It destroys people.
I thought 333 was shady thewhole time.
Let's see here.
246 made it out.
We have the whole plot with theguard, our guard number 11, and
(47:40):
player 246 has that sick child, and she got him out of there.
And he's back working at theamusement park.
It seems like his daughter'sdoing better.
I'll be honest with you.
While I thought that was one ofthe good moments, the good
endings of the show.
And I loved how, what a baddiethat guard number 11 was.
I could have dealt without thatwhole side plot.
Yeah.
Perfectly honest.
(48:01):
I felt like it was a distractionfrom everything else.
SPEAKER_00 (48:03):
To me.
Like, I think understanding whywe got three seasons is because
Netflix said, Hey, we want twomore seasons after season one.
And I, That was just here tomake sure that there was screen
time available to get this thingover the finish line of how long
it needed to be.
Because first of all, it was arepeat.
(48:23):
storyline from season onebecause they're oh here they are
doing the organ thing and thefront man didn't do anything
because the front man did notlike that they were doing that
SPEAKER_02 (48:32):
and he knows that
they're doing that right
SPEAKER_00 (48:33):
well he didn't know
they were doing it because in
the first season he didn't knowthey were doing it he found out
and they got punished for it buthere we are back at it again and
it's like they wove a storylinein and it did matter to a
certain extent because that guygot out but it just was
unnecessary I
SPEAKER_02 (48:45):
do like that we got
like just a grain of at least a
little bit of a happy ending andthen we had at the end I don't
remember her name from um seasonone but she passed and her
brother four five six got herbrother out of that orphanage
and he took her to live with sonwoo's mom while they're still
trying to find her mother innorth korea and you see that
(49:08):
montage at the end where theydid get the mother out
SPEAKER_03 (49:10):
yep
SPEAKER_02 (49:11):
and then you see um
guard number 11 who thought her
daughter was gone they're sayingyour daughter might still be
around in china do you thinkthat's true
SPEAKER_00 (49:18):
they're leaving it
up for us to determine so who
knows
SPEAKER_02 (49:21):
so there were some
like no nuggets of happiness.
And then we have, of course, thebig reveal, the betrayal of my,
my Shayla's.
So front man does reveal himselfto player four or five, six.
It's just another.
And if I'm four or five, six,I'm like, I can't believe I got
fooled again by this crap.
And he does it in a way, like Ifeel like 456 could have killed
(49:41):
him in that moment when he tookhis mask off and revealed him.
And that's why I ask you this,Daniel.
I have a series of questions I'mgoing to ask you because I do
ship them.
And I do think that the frontman had emotions for 456.
And I think there were somefeelings there, even though the
front man is clearly broken downby the games.
And he realizes at one pointthat 456 is not like me.
(50:04):
He made different choices.
I think that you see audibletears when 456 past.
SPEAKER_00 (50:09):
Audible tears.
You could hear them?
SPEAKER_02 (50:11):
No.
Visible tears.
I'm sorry.
I'm very passionate about this.
So Daniel, was it casual that heshot his own guards to protect
456?
Was it casual when he took sixmonths to give up his jacket to
his daughter?
Because at the end, the frontman goes to LA and gives 456's
(50:32):
daughter the jacket and themoney.
So was that casual?
Was it casual when the man whonever cried and watched hundreds
of people die cried at hisdeath?
Was it casual when he revealedwho he was and probably could
have gotten himself killedtrying to protect him?
Was it casual when he killed456's best friend out of pure
jealousy?
Was it casual when he orderedall the guards to stop 456 every
(50:56):
time he tried to unalivehimself?
Because they don't stop otherpeople from doing that.
Was it casual?
Were they lovers?
Worse.
Yeah.
SPEAKER_00 (51:06):
He just went to L.A.
to start up the new games.
So he just was like, well, I gotthis task I got to take care of.
You don't think
SPEAKER_02 (51:13):
he cared for 456?
I
SPEAKER_00 (51:16):
think he was...
interested in how he saw himselfin 456 and we saw that in the
flashback during season 3 wherethe original number one
character gave him the sameoption of here's the knife go
take care of these guys in themiddle of the night and he chose
to do it whereas 456 chose notto and I thought that scene by
(51:40):
the way where they were playingback and forth with the two
decisions was really well cuttogether because it kind of made
some tension about who'sactually what's happening
happening here is 456 killingthese guys it should have been
husbands turns out he didn't andbeen together at the end he
SPEAKER_02 (51:52):
should have changed
him
SPEAKER_00 (51:53):
so I think he saw
himself and I think he saw that
I think there's a at the end ofthe day 456 was proving a point
to him that no we can all makethe right choice
SPEAKER_02 (52:04):
and I think he was
impacted emotionally and I think
that that they
SPEAKER_00 (52:08):
he was impacted
emotionally and then he's gonna
go set up new games so
SPEAKER_02 (52:11):
were they lovers
worse I've been sending you tons
of edits of my shit.
SPEAKER_00 (52:16):
I know.
I know.
I know you have.
SPEAKER_02 (52:19):
Let's see.
What else about Squid Game?
So, Cate Blanchett.
Yeah, that was weird to me.
She shows up as the newrecruiter in L.A.
That was weird.
SPEAKER_00 (52:27):
Because it's not
clear to me from what I've read
that she's going to be a part ofthe season of the U.S.
version of this show, whichwe'll watch, but I'm not excited
for it.
SPEAKER_02 (52:36):
I was the, that's
Gene and him.
Like, all right, I must addressour hot detective, the cop guy,
front man's brother.
He's serving face card.
So hot.
Bye.
possibly maybe the worst like ithought he was a good detective
in season one season two andthree didn't make my baby look
good at all we do all this worktakes forever he gets to they he
(53:00):
finally finds him and he's likewhy and then we've got the other
guy who i don't know his if youdon't have a number i can't
pronounce your name it's the guythat was working with four or
five six and the cop to try tohelp figure out what's going on
he figured everything about outabout the boat captain in like
one day yeah
SPEAKER_00 (53:17):
that was another
storyline that i feel like they
added So they had something elseto talk about and it really was
not, it didn't mean anything.
SPEAKER_02 (53:24):
Not only does hot
cop, now he's a daddy and he's
getting all this money because
SPEAKER_00 (53:29):
front man.
You have to say it that
SPEAKER_02 (53:30):
way.
Yes, I did.
Front man like leaves the babywith him in a cute outfit, by
the way.
He kept that baby for six monthsand put her in the cutest little
outfit.
And he leaves the money.
And I felt like he did thatbecause I think he probably does
trust his brother.
But I think he's like, go be adad now and stop trying to find
me.
I felt like that's why he didthat.
(53:52):
What do you
SPEAKER_00 (53:52):
think?
I think so, yeah.
I think that's like a finalwarning.
I'm a
SPEAKER_02 (53:56):
dad.
I'm a daddy.
SPEAKER_00 (53:57):
Here's some
responsibility.
Focus on this, not on me.
SPEAKER_02 (54:01):
I really wish we
would have gotten some more
conversation between the two.
Also, I love how the boatcaptain just casually had photos
of them.
Even with the front man, I guesswhen the games aren't going on
on the weekends, they all justgo fishing and have a good time
together.
What was this?
I definitely, though, when itcomes to this, we watched it.
I'm not going to say I enjoyedit because it's kind of a
(54:23):
twisted show.
Or that I'm saying I'mentertained.
I don't know.
can I just say it was good eventhough it was sad it was good
but I'm with you I feel likethat first season we didn't need
more we could have ended on thatopen-ended mystery note but four
five six unfortunately I think alot of people are upset I didn't
(54:44):
want to see him die I wanted tosee him make it out but I was
never I feel like he was deadthe moment he chose
SPEAKER_00 (54:49):
there was never any
other choice yeah There was
never any other ending that wasgoing to happen.
And if you thought this show wasgoing to end with a happy
ending, you were not payingattention.
SPEAKER_01 (55:00):
Yes.
SPEAKER_00 (55:01):
Now, the American
version, that'll probably have a
happy ending because we have tomake everything have a happy
ending.
What
SPEAKER_02 (55:07):
kind of games do you
think we'll get?
Maybe like some Simon Says,Heads Up, Seven Up?
SPEAKER_00 (55:14):
I don't know.
I don't know.
Throw rocks at people?
SPEAKER_03 (55:19):
Oh, jeez.
SPEAKER_00 (55:21):
All right, well,
that's Squid Game Season 3.
We do have another show to talkabout here.
It was a premiere.
I...
SPEAKER_02 (55:32):
Do you know that if
you watch that on TV, it was
like three hours withcommercials?
I thought it was long enough.
I
SPEAKER_00 (55:39):
couldn't believe it
was two hours, but we're talking
about Bachelor in Paradise, bythe way.
I could not believe it was twohours on Hulu.
SPEAKER_02 (55:46):
I would just like to
say that I hate the new changes.
I miss the old, I miss thecheap, the dirty cheap look of
the old beach at the resort.
I felt like having thecontestants sleep in no AC and
that communal sleeping spacemade everything more stressful.
I like the old bar.
Now it's just like, they're likea new person.
There's no first sand.
It's the first pool.
(56:08):
I don't even know what to callit.
They're not having somebody walkdown the stairs.
They have some people likedriving up on like a go-kart.
Is that what we call it?
No, a four-wheeler, not a
SPEAKER_01 (56:16):
go-kart.
We
SPEAKER_02 (56:17):
have some people
just like, it's just like a pool
or resort.
They're trying to be somethingthey're not.
They're trying to look like moreof the Netflix curated reality
shows and trying to have anupdated modern feel.
Now, if they don't, Obviously,we'll watch it always a day
behind because we watch it onHulu.
And I know the first coupleseasons of Bachelor, not the
(56:38):
first couple seasons, the mostrecent season of Bachelor in
Paradise, sometimes the firstepisode you don't get the cheesy
theme song.
You know how they make it looklike a sitcom and it's funny?
If we don't get that, I'm goingto be ticked.
I need to see the AlmostParadise, the silly intros.
And what was up with the...
(56:59):
Like, dream sequences.
Like, they're trying not to becheesy, but then they have,
like, this sequence of Dale fromClaire's season, who's back on,
by the way.
Like, putting, like, whereKat's, like, imagining things.
And they, did they make, pullDale aside and was like, okay,
now you're gonna pretend tospray sunscreen on your junk.
Like, what was up with that?
SPEAKER_00 (57:17):
I don't know what
was going on there.
It was off-putting.
SPEAKER_02 (57:19):
Because you're like,
why would you put sunscreen
there?
SPEAKER_00 (57:22):
Yeah, that was like,
don't spray sunscreen at that
thing, man.
It's...
SPEAKER_02 (57:25):
Gets
SPEAKER_00 (57:26):
in the wrong place.
Starts stinging.
SPEAKER_02 (57:28):
So much of the cast,
I figured they would do this.
I don't even really know.
I didn't really watch Jen'sseason because all her men were
terrible.
I love Jen.
But I didn't watch any ofGrant's season.
So most of the...
the first pool.
Is that what we can call them?
Because I'm not calling
SPEAKER_00 (57:42):
them.
I wish we wouldn't.
Can we please not?
SPEAKER_02 (57:44):
Most of the first
pool people are from those two
seasons.
So I know there's like Jess fromJoey's season.
I did not like her on Joey'sseason, but she's there.
She seems to be more tolerableon that.
A lot of times people that Ididn't like on their seasons are
more tolerable on Bachelor inParadise.
And I think that's because theyrealized how they came off on
camera.
We've got Kat back who youremember from the previous
Bachelor in Paradise season.
(58:05):
She was on Zach's season.
Dale from Claire's season.
I'm starting to see why Clairewas like, you know what?
I'm going to peace out of TheBachelor early because he is
pretty charming.
When he picked Kat up with onehand, that was one thing I
noticed.
I was like, ooh.
Do you notice he picked her upwith one hand to put her on the
boat?
SPEAKER_00 (58:22):
No, I didn't.
SPEAKER_02 (58:23):
I guess not.
SPEAKER_00 (58:23):
This cast, I don't
know.
I've watched past seasons.
I've suffered through pastseasons.
I've been tormented by this showmultiple times.
But I feel like At least most ofthose times, there were a couple
people here and there who wereinteresting people to watch and
hear interact.
Not even Hannah Brown'sinteresting.
(58:45):
None of them.
SPEAKER_02 (58:45):
She's there just to
literally get a paycheck.
SPEAKER_00 (58:47):
Yeah, none of them
were...
It was just like, this is soboring.
They had
SPEAKER_02 (58:52):
Wells say, who's
always the bartender, say a
couple funny things, but Hannahis just literally there, I
think, to...
She's set on a podcast.
She's basically like a bottlegirl.
SPEAKER_00 (59:00):
So we watched this
whole episode, and we know that
the Golden...
Bachelors are coming in.
And so I keep saying throughoutthe episodes, can we get an old
person in here?
Can we get an old person inhere?
Because they're going to atleast liven this up a little bit
because it is boring.
They don't bring one in.
At all.
Not even at all.
But then they sizzle us with apreview for the rest of the
(59:22):
season at the end, and the veryfirst thing they show is an old
person, and I'm immediately out.
SPEAKER_02 (59:26):
The guy's like, no
cap.
SPEAKER_00 (59:28):
Immediately out.
No, I don't want the old peopleanymore.
I was wrong.
And they show running off
SPEAKER_02 (59:31):
the boat, partying.
What they should have done was, because the women had the roses,
they should have had an oldergolden contestant have a
last-minute rose.
I know Justin, Susie, so I knowsome of the people, but I
don't...
It's just, it's not the vibes.
Will I watch?
Of course.
But yeah, I don't think we'reprepared for the wildness that
(59:55):
these Goldens are going to bringto us.
SPEAKER_00 (59:57):
Apparently not.
SPEAKER_02 (59:58):
And why is it so
long?
SPEAKER_00 (01:00:00):
I don't know.
It doesn't need to be.
They really could cut this thingdown.
Because they're showing us muchstuff that's like useless.
SPEAKER_02 (01:00:06):
They're just trying
to be something they're not.
SPEAKER_00 (01:00:08):
But speaking of
dating shows.
SPEAKER_02 (01:00:11):
Yes.
SPEAKER_00 (01:00:12):
So I made the call
last week.
in error to ask if I shouldwatch Love Island And I've had a
whole education on Love Islandsince then.
Because apparently you guys wantmy reactions to this show.
Well, we tried.
SPEAKER_02 (01:00:27):
We did try.
SPEAKER_00 (01:00:28):
But there's
apparently a UK version and a US
version.
And we have no idea which one, one, you guys want us to watch.
A
SPEAKER_02 (01:00:35):
lot of people watch
both.
SPEAKER_00 (01:00:36):
And two, where to
watch them.
SPEAKER_02 (01:00:38):
The UK version,
which we started to watch, is on
Hulu.
And they do have some oldepisodes of the USA version on
Hulu.
But they're currently airing themost recent season, which I
think just ended.
is on Peacock.
We do not currently havePeacock.
A lot of the clips I've seen ofLove Island, I'm just watching
on TikTok and people talkingabout it.
(01:01:00):
That's how I keep up with it.
But yeah, we don't have Peacockright now.
Should we get Peacock just forLove Island?
SPEAKER_00 (01:01:06):
She sits here and
rattles all that off like she
knew it already.
But we sat down for dinner lastnight and she just...
puts on whatever Love Island hadcome up when she did her quick
search.
SPEAKER_02 (01:01:16):
I thought that it
still was on Hulu.
SPEAKER_00 (01:01:19):
And I'm like, these
are all British people.
SPEAKER_02 (01:01:20):
I just said, did you
not hear what I just said?
Yeah, I heard what you justsaid.
I just said that a lot of theclips that I watch have been
stuff that I've seen on TikTok.
That's how I keep up with it.
I assumed that you could stillwatch the USA version on Hulu.
I would have been, a lot ofpeople watch the British
SPEAKER_00 (01:01:34):
version.
Fair listeners, I'm only goingto watch one version.
And I'm only going to watch oneseason from one version.
So you all get together.
You put your collective headstogether.
Figure it out.
Let me know.
And I'll watch that.
SPEAKER_02 (01:01:46):
Or we could have
Daniel skip Love Island entirely
and we could commit to Traitors.
SPEAKER_00 (01:01:52):
No.
I feel like I've seen oneepisode of Trailer.
I can't do that.
All right.
Something about that show I'mallergic to.
It's awful.
It's terrible.
I don't want it.
SPEAKER_02 (01:02:03):
You're going to
offend people.
Well.
SPEAKER_00 (01:02:04):
I don't care.
SPEAKER_02 (01:02:05):
Some good shows are
coming back.
SPEAKER_00 (01:02:07):
It's Star Trek week!
SPEAKER_02 (01:02:11):
And the samurai turn
pretty.
I'm more excited for that.
Both of those shows come outthis week.
I thought we were going to getthree episodes of The Summer I
Turned Pretty at once, but nowI'm reading, I just said this
week, a hot new bombshell entersthe villa.
See?
We got a little Love Island inthere.
Anyway, I think we're getting
SPEAKER_00 (01:02:30):
the first- Oh, is
that what that's from?
SPEAKER_02 (01:02:31):
Yes.
Okay.
The first two episodes of TheSummer I Turned Pretty we are
getting, and then we are gettingone episode, I believe, of Star
Trek Strange New Worlds.
I think Summer I Turn Pretty isthe 16th and Stranger Worlds is
the 17th, so we shouldn't have aconflict.
SPEAKER_00 (01:02:48):
Oh, and good news
for Star Trek.
We are getting two episodes.
Oh, so we are.
I just looked it up.
I was worried because we gotleft on a cliffhanger at the end
of season two.
So
SPEAKER_02 (01:02:59):
we're getting two
episodes of both of these shows
this week.
SPEAKER_00 (01:03:01):
Correct.
So we're content fed.
SPEAKER_02 (01:03:04):
All right.
And if you guys are wonderingabout In Just Like That, we are
probably going to finish iteventually, but we are currently
on hiatus because it is that
SPEAKER_00 (01:03:11):
bad.
You are.
I'm out.
I'm tapped.
SPEAKER_02 (01:03:13):
It is not great.
SPEAKER_00 (01:03:14):
I can't go back to
that show.
You've told me some things thathave gone on since we haven't
been watching.
I'm out.
I'm not interested in that showanymore.
We will.
See you later.
I'm waving bye to And Just LikeThat.
SPEAKER_02 (01:03:28):
Or not.
We don't know.
SPEAKER_00 (01:03:30):
You can't make me
watch all of it.
If I have to, you have to.
You can't make me watch LoveIsland.
We're all in this together.
And Just Like That.
And then the other night you putin a bid to try and get me to
watch The Summer I Turned Prettyby bribing me with a Star Trek
movie that you're already goingto watch.
You're watching Star Trek 4.
We
SPEAKER_02 (01:03:49):
should watch
Smallville.
SPEAKER_00 (01:03:50):
Anyway, I'm not
watching.
No, no.
I can only do so much.
I can only take so muchpunishment.
SPEAKER_02 (01:03:59):

else?

got.
