You: Shoulder length, blonde hair with dark roots. Black tank top. White shorts. Sandals. Me: Black linen button up. Denim shorts. Short quaffed to the side dark hair (pomade)
We crossed paths in the kitchenware aisle. Both of us drawn to the same set of plates, the same set of cutlery. I watched your hand hover over the box—mine was close, too close. For a moment, our fingers nearly brushed. You took it. You won. I lingered. Followed. Quiet footsteps, close enough to see you, far enough that you couldn’t see me—until the counter. You stood there, and I stood there, too. Watching. I couldn’t help it. You were perfect.
-- Missed Connection: Written by an Author Your hair fell like pale silk, the dark roots woven in shadow, betraying their depth. A black tank clung to your shoulders, white shorts struck against the fluorescents—a contrast as sharp as summer light on a blade’s edge. Sandals whispered across the polished floor.
And me? A dark figure in linen, buttons loosed for heat and breathing room. Denim frayed where the thighs brushed. My hair, careful but careless—quiffed and neat beneath the sheen of pomade, like a river’s calm edge hiding the pull beneath.
The kitchenware aisle. A strange place for fate’s gambits, but there it was, playing its hand. The plates sat immaculate in their glossy cardboard, the cutlery beside it gleamed, silver and righteous. My hand hovered, indecisive, but yours? Yours was deliberate. I saw your fingers approach—graceful, certain. For one breathless instant, they hovered close to mine, like two hesitant flies circling the same web. I thought our skin would meet. It didn’t.
You took the box. You won.
But I lingered. Ghosted steps, soft against linoleum—quiet enough to remain unseen, close enough to catch the barest curve of your silhouette as you moved. Your presence, magnetic; I followed, not hunting but drawn, as though by some string unseen, yet taut as iron wire.
At the counter, you stopped. I stopped. The world contracted to a still frame: the edge of your profile beneath harsh retail lights. The line of your jaw, where sunlight might one day rest. I didn’t mean to watch you—but how could I not? My gaze was a moth, your figure the flame.
You were perfect.
And I watched. Because what else can you do when perfection, however fleeting, unfolds itself within reach?
