Speaker 1 (00:20):
Hello Wellness Warriors, welcome back to
another episode of the WellnessInspired Podcast, a place where
you can find inspiration, motivation and empowerment in
the pursuit of a wellnesslifestyle.
I'm your host, sherri Davidson.
I'm a wellness coach,acupuncturist, trail runner and
former interior designer inHouston, texas, and I am deeply
passionate about health andwellbeing.

(00:41):
And, as always, I'm here withmy co-host, finn, and if you're
new to the podcast, finn is myTerrier, mix, rescue dog, trail
runner and loyal companion.
He is also a therapy dog andgreeter at Element 5 Acupuncture
and Wellness.
Okay, I am super excited todaybecause we are going to dive
into a topic that I know willhit home for a lot of you and

(01:02):
it's a reflection on a personalstory.
We are going to talk aboutredefining success because, you
know, in a world that seems tomeasure our worth by results,
like crossing that finish line, snagging that big promotion or
finally achieving that goalyou've been chasing, well, it's
easy to get swept up, thinkingthat only the end result counts.

(01:25):
We push, we hustle, we endurefor all those moments that we
think will prove our efforts areworth it.
But let me ask you this what ifthere is more to success than
just that?
What if the real magic is inthe journey itself, the moments
of growth, the unexpected joyand the resilience we build

(01:47):
along the way.
What if success isn't justabout how far we go, but how we
live and breathe in thosein-between moments?
Well, today I'm going to sharea personal story that has
flipped my definition of successon its head, and how shifting
from focusing on endurance toactually enjoying the ride can

(02:08):
change not just how we pursueour goals, but how we show up in
life.
So, whether you're an athletepushing your limits, a
professional juggling a packedschedule, or just someone trying
to grow and evolve, thisepisode is here to challenge
your idea of what it truly meansto succeed.
But before we jump in, I have totalk about the Wellness River

(02:31):
Cruise.
I can't believe it is sixmonths away.
If you've been tuning into thispodcast over the past year,
you've likely caught wind ofthis Wellness River Cruise.
Well, friends, it's here.
It's six months away, so markyour calendars for April the
20th 2025, as we set sail on anunforgettable seven-night cruise
along the Danube River.

(02:52):
We'll traverse the picturesquelandscape of Austria, germany,
hungary and Slovakia, and I amsuper excited about this.
Prepare for many activesightseeing adventures,
including invigorating hikes, scenic bike rides and even a few
brisk runs maybe.
Alongside these activities, indulge in the serenity of yoga
sessions, engage in enlighteningwellness discussions and savor

(03:15):
the flavors of locally sourcedcuisine.
Excitement is already brewing,as several enthusiasts have
secured their spots.
For those intrigued, I will putthe link in the show notes.
And if you're certain, thisWellness River cruise is calling
your name, please waste no timein securing your place on board
.
Riverboat cruises fill uprapidly.

(03:36):
That's why my mistake, but wehad to shift the dates from this
year to next year, so don'tthink about it too long.
Seize the opportunity while youcan.
And if you're looking for moreinformation, in episode 63 and
64, a journey of wellness andwonder on the Dan Noob with Amma
Waterways, I had the pleasureof having Laurie she is a

(03:57):
representative from AmmaWaterways and Tammy, my friend,
she is a seasoned travelconcierge.
They came onto the podcast andwe got to discuss the full river
cruise experience, so that wassuper cool.
So feel free to check thoseepisodes out for more
information.
Again, this all has to happenquickly.
The cruise is around the corner, it's April of next year and

(04:20):
there are only 129 cabins on theboat.
They sell out quickly.
So, if you're interested, putyour deposit down.
It's not a lot to hold yourspot.
Okay, well, let's get started.

(04:50):
So, reflecting on this past year, I set some big goals and I was
met with obstacles andchallenges the whole way as my
goals slipped away.
I started beating up on myselfa little because I was so
focused on not reaching my goal.
I was a failure because Ididn't cross the finish line.
I was a failure because Ididn't cross the finish line.
Worse, I didn't even start.
I didn't like how I was feeling.

(05:12):
No-transcript.
What success have I had on thisjourney?
And you know what?
I found so many things, but Iwas so focused on the finish
line I couldn't see them.
So as I started to see thewhole picture, I started
rethinking what success means.
So I want to start by exploringhow success is commonly defined

(05:33):
, and for most of us, it's tiedto achieving measurable
milestones, so completing a bigrace, landing a promotion or
achieving a personal best andwhile these moments are
definitely worth celebrating, Idon't want to diminish them.
They are worth celebration.
But focusing solely on outcomescan make the process feel empty

(05:56):
when things don't go as planned.
And, let's face it, life isfull of unexpected twists and
turns.
And these twists and turns, challenges and obstacles they
have a way of reshaping ourjourney.
This past year reminded me ofjust how powerful that lesson

(06:16):
can be.
I want to share my personalstory with you, because this is
where this all came from.
I made a commitment and it tookme a long time to make this
commitment.
A long time, but I finally didit.
In January of 2024, withexcitement and enthusiasm, I

(06:41):
signed up and trained for myfirst 100 mile trail race, the
Javelina 100, set against thestunning backdrop of Arizona's
McDowell mountains.
But, as life often does, itthrew a wrench in my plans.
Life often does.
It threw a wrench in my plans.

(07:01):
Along the way, I battled astubborn case of plantar
fasciitis, along with many otherthings.
But this was the big thing.
I had pain all day, every day.
I tried every trick in the bookfor relief and some things
helped.
But this persistent plantarfasciitis turned my days into a
delicate dance of painmanagement, with endless hours
at the gym, on a bike andelliptical replacing my road and

(07:26):
trail miles.
Because I was determined tokeep moving forward.
And in September, the bottom ofmy foot went numb and I had to
confront a tough truth of myfoot went numb and I had to
confront a tough truth my footsimply wasn't ready, not ready
for a hundred mile race inOctober.
So, with my hundred mile goalslipping away, I had to make a

(07:54):
choice.
That wasn't easy.
So I withdrew from the hundredmile distance and it was hard
because I wanted it.
I really, really wanted it andI had already invested so much
time in training.
I started training, I think, inMarch and this was September.
You know I just couldn't let itgo.
I couldn't let it go.
I was flip-flopping back andforth.
Do I still go?
Do I not go?
Do I save the money?

(08:15):
You know, back and forth, Iknow I drove my friends crazy.
I was in, I was out.
Are you coming?
Am I going?
Am I not going?
It was just back and forth.
So yeah, I just couldn't let itgo.
So I decided to head off thereanyway with my crew and I
decided to enjoy the trip anddrop down in distance to the

(08:36):
Javelina 31K Jackass Night TrailRun.
So I started at 6 PM in theMcDowell Mountain Range and ran
20 miles through the desert atnight, under the stars Best
decision ever.
Now, my foot was a bit cranky, but I surprised myself with how
well I did and had an absoluteblast.

(08:58):
The trip was a huge success.
I got to spend time with newand old friends, and witnessing
all the amazing accomplishmentsout there was beyond inspiring.
The decision pushed me torethink success in itself,
shifting my focus from distanceto what truly matters, staying

(09:19):
connected to my body's needs andembracing the experience for
what it was.
And what I found that night wasjoy.
Joy in being surrounded byother passionate runners and
feeling the cool desert airunder the blanket of stars and
realizing that my wellnessjourney is about more than just

(09:39):
proving I can go the distancewith a bummed foot.
Now, I don't think it's ever agood idea.
To start a hundred mile racewith a bummed foot Doesn't mean
I'm not going to try this again.
That unforgettable nightreminded me that every challenge
, every twist in the path is anopportunity to redefine what

(09:59):
success looks like and findgrowth in unexpected places.
I embraced the shift fromendurance to enjoyment.
So you might be asking whatdoes shifting from endurance to
enjoyment really mean?
And first I want to be clearendurance is a powerful muscle

(10:19):
to develop and it's essentialwhen you're striving towards a
big goal.
That's why I do these races.
And if I had been at the startline of that hundred mile race
with a healthy foot, you betterbelieve my mindset would have
been about endurance and pushingthrough anything to reach that
goal.
There's a real value in diggingdeep and persevering, because

(10:40):
when you get through it, you getthis unshakable confidence,
this coping skill that you canget through anything, and
there's something reallyvaluable about that.
But this time around I had topivot with an injury.
I knew that forcing my waythrough it wasn't the answer, so

(11:01):
instead I reframed my mindsettowards enjoyment, reconnected
with why I started running inthe first place.
Running, like any wellnesspractice, should be fueled by
passion and curiosity, not byjust sheer grit and
determination.
And for me, this shift allowedme to appreciate the experience,

(11:22):
even if it didn't look the wayI originally planned, and it
reminded me that there is joy insimply being out there, in
movement, in nature, and all thecamaraderie with other runners.
This mindset isn't just forathletes.
Whether you're balancing ademanding career, managing
family life or navigatingpersonal growth, learning to

(11:45):
find enjoyment in the processcan make all the difference.
When we redefine success toinclude joy, we create space for
growth, self-compassion anddiscovery.
Challenges become a part of theadventure rather than
roadblocks, and every run, project or goal becomes an
opportunity to learn, adapt andappreciate life more fully.

(12:09):
Okay, with all of that said, ifredefining success sounds like
something you'd like to embrace, you know I'm going to give you
a few steps to guide you.
So I have four points here.
So you want to set fluid goalsimportant, fluid, flexible so
you can have ambitious goals, and I think everybody should,

(12:30):
but allow for flexibility.
Life isn't linear andadaptability helps you navigate
changes with ease.
Another one be celebrate theprocess.
Remember to take joy in eachstep and stage of your journey,
so whether it's the training, the learning curve or the people
you meet along the way.

(12:51):
Third one is to tune into yourbody and wellness in life.
Listening to your intuition andphysical cues can help you make
decisions that prioritize yourlong-term health and happiness.
And last one is to reframe yourmindset.
Look at setbacks not asfailures, but as redirections

(13:11):
that lead to new experiences andnew perspective.
I actually think that that'sone of my favorite ones.
All right, friends.
Well, we're going to wrap thisup with a few closing thoughts,
and I just want you to rememberthat success isn't just about
crossing the finish line.
It's about enjoying the stepsthat take you there, and my

(13:31):
experience at the Javelina 100was a big reminder that even
when plans change, the storycontinues and it's often richer
with the twists and turns makingit a great adventure.
Well, that's a wrap.

conversation has sparked someideas.

enjoying.
