(00:21):
me up again 'cause. I hello, ladies and gentlemen,
welcome to what do you say Animeafter dark, a fun AX edition.
I got Trent and Johnny with me and we're sort of just going to
bullshit for whatever. I don't know, talk about what we
did at AX the day one and we'll do this every night if we can
remember, if we're sober enough. So obviously we're doing this
(00:45):
after dark. So we have been drinking, at
least I've been drinking Trent out a little bit.
Johnny, who is underage, has notbeen drinking because he is a
stand up citizen. So I.
Have two weeks. Two weeks.
Two weeks so Johnny can. And then I'll be alone.
Yeah, so he has has, has had absolutely no alcohol
whatsoever. So we'll be chilling.
(01:07):
We'll be talking about like whatwe're doing.
And I don't know, wherever it goes from there, it'll be great.
So Trent, editor Trent, I don't know.
When's the last time you've beenon the podcast?
It's been a minute. It was either.
When it was like Oresuki, it was.
Oresuki I didn't. Forgot about that.
There was like 3 weeks in a row because it was like Higurashi
(01:29):
maybe. No, that was before, but we had
the oh what was the the show? Oh Emia, Emia family cooking for
MEF. Oh, that's right.
Because, yeah, because it's a fate friend, so you had to be on
it. Yeah.
So I was on that sense and then yeah.
Or he said he was either like before or.
After hell yeah and then Johnny, who has been a stable member for
(01:53):
years and then he's like, I guess I need to go to college
and then. Stopped.
He's here now. Well, it's more that I went to
Japan and I didn't want to record at 6:00 AM, so see.
You know, people make sacrificesfor the pod.
Johnny is not one of those people, so, but it's good to
have you back. Johnny yeah, I'm back in North
(02:14):
America, so yeah. And we're we're all here at AX,
so that's dope as shit. And shout out to Trent, who has
this dope ass set up that we're just pulsing up in the kitchen
of our B&B. And we just thought like, I
mean, if we got it, we might as well use it right?
Like, so we'll all be doing thisevery night if we are sober
(02:36):
enough and give you a recap sortof like what we did and what we
experienced at AX and whatever went into it.
So, and I guess this is, I'll claim this is like an after dark
thing because I've always kind of wanted to do like an after
dark thing because I'm never like drunk or anything while I
do the podcast. But now I'm a little buzzed.
So maybe I can show off a side of me and side of every, I guess
(02:59):
Johnny Silver 24/7. But who knows?
We can show a different side of us when we're having a little
little fun at AX. So how about we started off day
one AX Trent, run us down with what you did.
So I was basically kind of following you guys 'cause yeah,
because I yeah, I. Have Well, you were the driver.
(03:21):
Yeah, Oh, yeah. I was the driver.
I I'm up in the Bay Area, so it was just a drive down for me of
a handful of hours. I didn't have to fly in like.
These guys. International flight for me.
Yeah, international flight over here.
And mine was a breeze out. Such an easy flight this time.
You got good flights coming because whether it's for Vegas,
(03:41):
because we. Went to Vegas, I had terrible,
terrible turbulence, like the worst of my life.
It was just random because I'd never get turbulence when I go
into Vegas. And last time I did and this
time was like, I don't know, this was smooth.
So shout to Delta for the smoothlanding I guess.
You came early as well. You were supposed to come later
(04:03):
than me. Delta is efficient.
Now what can I say? I'm not going to complain about
them arriving on time if or. Earlier also you got your
luggage like immediately. I have to wait like half an
hour. Once again, not complaining that
those are all fantastic. Shout out to Air Canada for DL
but. Yeah, because I was when I was
like on my way, I was like an hour out.
I was like, OK, your flight should be landing now or soon,
(04:25):
so you'll get this text first. I was like, hey get ready, we're
game plan. I'm going to make this efficient
because LAX. Holy crap those first two
terminals are a hell to drive through.
Hell to drive through. But why?
I flew in, because I flew in. We I came to AX in 2022 and LAX
was kind of a dump. Yeah.
(04:45):
And now it's incredible. It was one of the nicest
airports I went to. I was like, what the shit?
Yeah. So props to LAX for like upping
their airport game because it used to be a dump, but now it's
super nice. I was.
Like at least getting off the plane was super easy because I
went through customs and all that before the flight.
So I just stepped off the plane and just went to get my luggage.
It's. Just like, I don't know if
you've ever been to like LaGuardia or something like that
(05:07):
or like JFK. And it's just like those
airports are just like in those major cities, they're normally
just dumps like O'Hare in Chicago dump.
And so LAX was like the nicer ofthe dumps, I would say.
And then I flew in and I was like, this is really nice.
So I don't know what they did, but they reverted re like redid,
like the terminal. I flew in Terminal 5.
(05:29):
It was like crisp, clean, brand new restaurants, brand new bars,
sounds like brand new bathrooms.I was like, OK, I can, you know,
I can take a piss here. So yeah, the only airport that I
have, so I've heard DFW Dallas. I flew to Dallas before and it
wasn't that bad. Yeah, I, I flew there for the
first time or I, it was a connector for me.
(05:51):
First time this past year. And yeah, it wasn't anything
bad. Yeah.
Some of it was a little older, but I mean, it was, it was fine.
A sick plug. Yeah, yeah.
Yeah. What?
What is that, I wonder? Hey, it's after dark and I'm
feeling a little silly, so I'm going to try to post that up
right there. I made, I made, I bought
(06:13):
business cards. I'm going to use them.
You think anyone else has seen them yet?
So we had AI threw a business card on a table at the beer
garden and a guy walked up and like looked at.
It he was. Eyeing it.
He was eyeing it. So that's the closest, yeah.
I saw it. I was like.
You got three. You got three more days, dude.
(06:34):
What's it like? I'm I'm not like going off the
people and be like, yo, here's my business card.
But it's like it's nice to have in case.
And I also just, I'm just throwing them in random places
because you never know. Yeah, what's the worst that can
happen? You get arrested.
That's that is out there for oneof the worst things that could
happen. I'd be pissed if I.
Got arrested, get arrested in LA, get thrown in jail.
Need to see it. But yeah, so back to what I was
(06:58):
doing. So I, this is my third AX
overall Nice 2019-2020 2 and then now 2025.
And so the ones in the past, like the first one, I went to
20/19. It was cool.
It was my, it was definitely thebiggest call on out of that
(07:21):
scale. It it, it was on a whole other
tier of conventions. We got to talk about that too
later, but. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And like, that was like the goldstandard of like what a anime
convention could be, and it still is to this point.
Or a. 100% today. This place is massive.
Yeah. And then so like my second year,
I was like, OK, I know what to expect.
(07:42):
I know I got a plan XY and Z8, there's all this stuff going on,
but this year I've been, we're talking about it earlier that I
mostly follow anime through editing the podcast and I just
like what's going on this summerthrough me.
And osmosis, you have consumed every season of anime I know.
(08:05):
It's like 3 years, yes. So you.
Might actually know, like peoplemight actually watch anime, but
say they watch like 5 anime a season, you might know more than
them just because of what you have consumed.
For me and Cosette and sometimesMiles and watch Club Miles doing
the preview. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The first. Impressions, like you kind of
get an idea, which is great because if someone sparks up a
(08:27):
conversation, you could be like,oh, is that the one with this?
It's like, I didn't watch it, but I heard, you know, Miles
talk about it, So yeah. And.
Then I just parrot whatever I heard and you.
Don't gotta know the show. He doesn't know enough to
pretend you know the show. Exactly, exactly.
That's yeah. That's what carries me through
like anime trivia. Yeah.
He's been Anime Jeopardy. The one with the sick fight,
(08:48):
Yeah, I love that one. He's like, you'd be super vague.
It'd be like. Yeah, Windbreaker fight of the
year. Like, of course, I mean, yes,
yeah, that one fight, you know, they're on the they're on the
stage. And because I had to look up
clips for. It So did you actually watch
Windbreaker? That's the only clip I've seen.
You are consuming windbreaker. Yeah, yeah.
(09:11):
Because I went on YouTube and I I searched for clips of that
fight. So I was like, OK, let me see
what he's talking about. And I was like, oh, this is the
fight. That's so funny.
And then I was like, that is a choice, but sure.
All right. But yeah, so going into this
year like I had, there wasn't really anything that I had
(09:33):
checked off you, you, you 2 had made a Google doc of like things
you wanted to do. Correction.
You made it. I didn't do anything.
I didn't do anything. I didn't.
I tried to give you credit. So while we are an anime
podcast, I do actually want to consume anime content when I'm
here. So I did plan ahead and make a
Google doc. I for it's funny because like we
(09:55):
were, I was just actually talking to Kozad when we were
walking watching a show about like traveling to Japan and
stuff like that. And when I go and I travel, I my
itinerary is like, I know where I'm sleeping for the night and
like that's it. Everything else I, I free
balled, but this is just like, you know, 12:30 I'm this 2:30
I'm here 4:30 I'm here 6:30 I'm here because it's like we're,
(10:16):
we're limited on time and stuff like that.
So, so yeah, I, I planned out atleast the first two days.
We'll see how Saturday goes, howI feel after 4th of July
festivities, but. My planning was like, we can go
to the beach if we have downtown, I have the car, I can
drive to Santa Monica if we want.
(10:37):
But yeah, like I was just so I was like, you know what?
I was like, I'm here mostly for you guys and the experience and
the fun of it. And then so like, I was like,
yeah, you know, I'd like to see like the Silent Hill panel
because I enjoy. That's tomorrow is where, yeah.
(10:58):
But like, aside from that, I'm like, I'm just here for the
vibes and energy and the good time.
And I'm looking forward to hearing what you got out of the
Silent Hill. Yeah, I am not going to that
panel. Spooky.
It is spooky and I love rikishi and it's just other things are.
There's a lot of stuff. Can't go to every event because.
(11:20):
That's the. Yeah, that's so tough.
And it's like we're the we're going to the free Room 1
tomorrow, but like if we go to that one, there's no way we're
making to a demon. Yeah, we have to skip like the
two o'clocks and because of, I mean, maybe we can make the two
o'clocks, but. No, there's no way.
I mean, maybe because I want to talk about with Trent when we
get to it, but did you want, is there anything else from your
day that you wanted to talk about like in terms of the
(11:41):
panels that you saw? Because we saw the Let's Play
review and I gave my thoughts onthe video, but I didn't get you
your thoughts. So I'd like to hear what you
thought of Let's Play. Yeah.
So that was that was like the last thing we did, right?
That was I I guess because we did Anime Jeopardy, which was
fine like. We came later because we wanted
(12:02):
to get the goodie bags that theygive out because those make for
really good shopping bags. Yeah, we, we tried to, we got in
line for those and then we took like 20 minutes, half an hour.
We like looped. We looped in like a big circle 2
times. Yeah, we walked the the main
hallway like so many like 3 times.
(12:23):
Because the panel that you we ended up going to you the lined
up outside to go inside for the panel.
So I didn't see you guys for 1/2an hour.
Yeah, when the guy said outside,he said outside in the Concord,
of course. And for some reason in my mind I
was thinking that was like the front area.
Inside in the back. He was.
He was. In a food court.
And I was like, I think that's the food.
(12:45):
No. Well, yeah, but because that was
around where we need to go anyway.
We went out to the front and I'mlike, there's no lines.
What did he mean by outside? And then as soon as we went back
inside, it clicked. I was like, oh, there's that
whole inside part. That or the the outdoors inside.
Part we we found it before the event started, so.
(13:07):
You know, yeah, yeah, we still got there.
Yeah, but. Then we were late and we sat.
We were in. We weren't late, we made it on.
Time we were late to get in the shade.
Yeah, we were standing like literally like 3 people outside
of the shade. That's.
Where the tents covered. Yeah, so we were just like
burning in the heat and I was incosplay and I was just burning
(13:28):
my ass off so. So yeah, yeah, that was that was
the first thing we did. But.
That panel was like weird because I don't want like yuck,
anybody's Yum. But it was weird because we got
there and they ran the panel andthey had like 7 people running
this panel. Yeah, there's a lot of work.
And it was it was. AI was shocked by how poorly ran
(13:51):
that panel was. It was weird because I've ran
anime Jeopardy panels before andit's gone very smooth and it's
that's literally just me and they had like 7 people working
and they like couldn't figure out like the the Jeopardy board
wouldn't remove questions after they've been asked.
So people were asking like questions have already been
(14:13):
asked. I'm just like what is going on
and. A few of the answers just didn't
show off. One in particular didn't even
show up. I'm just like, it's nothing like
they're just regular people. Like I get it.
But like when you go to AX, it'slike especially the panel we
went to afterwards, it's like I am expecting like a level of I,
I expect that at like a local con.
(14:34):
Yeah. I mean, there's a difference
between like the professional panels and like those events.
Well, I mean there are paid employees running these panels
like they are. Their job is to be here and run
the panel. It was like they their job is to
like the convention, whereas like those ones they're for.
Like, but when there's seven of you running a panel, I feel like
it should at least run smooth. Like operation wise, like you
(14:57):
don't need to know all the answers, but like the fact that
like the questions didn't go away and we're playing Jeopardy.
So like when the questions don'tgo away, like because you want
to, you're trying to make the experience for not only the
people that are participating inthe game, but the audience.
The audience isn't having fun because we don't know like what
questions are coming next. And it was just, it was just it
(15:18):
just. We couldn't track the points.
Yeah, you couldn't track the points and everything like that.
And it's just, it's just weird because it's just something when
you expect a higher level of something.
Yeah. It's like if you watch a
eupholdable anime and it's like,it looks like AI don't know
studio Dean anime, You're like, what the.
Like, even if like even if the content is like perfect and the
story's great and the dialogue'sgreat and the voice acting's
(15:39):
great, but like, it looks like shit, you're gonna be like, huh.
And that's kind of what I felt like.
I felt like really out of place for a con like AX, but that was
like the only negative of the day I would say.
Yeah, like you, you mentioned. It oh, there's another one that
you're going to mention later. Well, we'll get to it when.
Yeah, but yeah, no, like you were like you were saying like
(16:02):
when you're at AX, you expect, you expect a different level.
Yeah. Of.
Like standard? Yeah.
Higher standard. I mean, it's, it's not it's
public knowledge. We're paying $200 for a four day
pass like. Yeah, if I'm.
Spending $200, I'd want to get my money's worth.
Although we paid the flight to LA.
(16:22):
Unless you have a Delta credit card and then you can get free
miles. Is it a sponsor?
No, I'm saying my flight was free this time.
I paid a dime for my. Flight I have I have points for
like most of that to pay. Like I paid $11.00, there's a
transaction fee for using miles,so I paid $11.00 for my flight
to LA. Damn.
Unfortunate. How have you ever recouped those
classes? Let me tell.
(16:43):
You about my best friend. Mystic Lake casino Shout to the
craps table but. Yeah, that was, that was, that
was a good time. That was a good time.
We still had still had fun. It was so fun.
It was just off. And so, so after after Jeopardy,
(17:09):
we, where do we go after that? We did the sports.
Oh yeah, you guys got. That's right.
You guys got. Food and I went to a sports and
anime, but then you showed up later.
Yeah, yeah, this is. No, we did the other one.
First, did we? Yeah, we did.
Which one did we do at? It was.
We did. Yeah, we did.
Annie Plex. First Annie Plex.
That's what I was going. To say, I thought you're going
(17:29):
to bring that up. I thought you're going to bring
that up earlier. I literally just said there was
1 L but that was even. There's 2L's and that one is.
I literally said like, there wassomething else you're going to
say later. This is a.
This is what do you see anyway, after dark.
I have been drinking and so I don't remember what I did five
hours. Ago I forgot about that.
Just for context it is one in the morning and we're me and
(17:52):
Johnny are on like Bauer time right now because of the time
change. So a three hour time difference.
Worse worse worse. Me, me and Johnny have some
slack. We're slack and I'm not going to
front, but I forgot about the antiplex.
What? That's how much of A stinker it
was. Yeah, What's your Johnny?
What? I Because I heard your thoughts.
What's your thoughts, Johnny on the Anaplex?
Because we went to the Anaplex industry panel.
(18:15):
Yeah. What were you expecting?
And then what'd you get out of it?
I was expecting there to be like, you know, maybe like a
compilation video of like like the greatest hits or whatever,
which I mean, like they kind of had that, but they were they
literally just like they were like here's what we did for the
past 20 years. Shows like a list of anime.
You pull up one clip, you pull up something like ChatGPT
(18:38):
generated, like summary of it, and then you move on to the next
show and it's like that for likean hour.
Yeah, right. Yeah, well, you.
Yeah, it was like, it was cool because it's like, oh, I love
that scene. And girl, I'm like, oh, I love
that scene in Anna Hana. I love that scene, and you're
lying in April, so on and so forth.
But I was just like, yeah, this was just them flexing.
(19:02):
For but you wouldn't spend an hour waiting in line to like,
watch, no watch a YouTube video. That's what it was, Yeah.
It was a YouTube video. Yeah, like there was the like
you asked Johnny, what would youexpect?
Like I would expect announcement.
If he said this one, yeah. Or at least like maybe like you
have like the people on there like describe like their
(19:24):
experience. Well, I mean, I guess they did.
They had the guy that like they had the guy explaining.
How he got into it, but like localizer like it.
Like he didn't even like make any of that anime.
He's like helping like translateand stuff.
Yeah, you could like, you could have people like in the industry
who like actually like who like created the animal or like
responsible for like making it like voice actors and like
(19:44):
directors and stuff. I guess we could give some.
So they were going over all the shows that Annie Plex has like
brought over to the West. And then they brought out this
guy who essentially how he got his start was he did a fate
panel at soccer con in Seattle. At the same time, fake Grand
Order was coming out in English and he got a job from it.
(20:06):
Because he was such a big fan. But like that was cool and all,
but it had nothing to do with the antiplex industry panel.
Like before he came out, they were talking, they were
showcasing all the stuff that they brought over and all the
the Blu rays that they brought out and everything like that.
It's like, yo, that's cool and all, but it felt like the whole
time that they were setting up to something, because I've been
(20:27):
to panels where it's like, OK, we saved the best for last, and
then they actually do save the best for last.
That's where I felt like they were going.
Like I thought they were settingup like, hey, we did Full Metal
Alchemist, we did Gurren Lagann.Sick.
OK, They did Kagi Osama. So I'm like, OK, Kagi, Osama.
But I don't think they showed. Did they show?
(20:48):
No. Did they show Cog yourself they
mentioned? They showed they.
Showed like a like a flash. No, they didn't say anything
about the new stuff. It was like in the compilation
of like 20 years on any flash. There's nothing new.
So before the panel they did like a montage video and Coggio
was mentioned, but then when they actually got into the
panel, Coggio wasn't mentioned at all.
I'm just like, you just announced the next season.
(21:08):
I was like and then no release date, no PV, even new PV art.
I don't even need a trailer likekey visual.
So something along those like and it's not even for Coggio.
It's something for also things like shows of the demon realm,
which is the full metal alchemist manga that got
announced for an anime. I was like, this is the perfect
(21:32):
time to like show anything for it.
And they just didn't. And it was just Speaking of like
because the Jeopardy one felt like a little off.
This one just felt this one was bad.
Like this wasn't like an industry panel to like hype
people up for antiplex. This was antiplex sort of just
flexing what they've done in thelast 20 years as a panel.
(21:55):
And the only new content that they showed was the second PV of
Virgin Punk, which is it looked cool it.
Was sick, I was so hyped. We didn't know that that was
like a grand premiere until I went on Twitter.
And then even then I was like, OK, who cares?
Like it kind of looked like the first PV of Virgin Punk, if you
(22:16):
saw that. So I was just.
I was so. Disappointed it wasn't worth the
wait at. All it was so bad because I've
been to other industry panels before and they were great.
Like I guess maybe this is just like a a mental note or
something like that. Like if you go to cons and they
have industry panels like maybe go to like the Bones or the Wit
Studio panels instead of like the localization stuff like.
(22:41):
Not the big distribution. Not any Plex, not Kanakala, not
what's this the ones those ones with an S sentai?
No, well, Sentai is they do do that for sure.
That's all high dive stuff. But like I I I guess I would
just like, so that's more manga.Yeah, that's manga.
(23:01):
But I was like, I guess it's just like a thing where it's
like if I guess if I see like Katakawa industry panel, it's
going down lower on my list because that industry panel for
Andy Plex was so bad. Well, that's tomorrow, so maybe.
I'm just not going to. It I know it's either tomorrow
or. Saturday, it's one of the days.
I'm skipping it. I I don't care.
(23:21):
I'll find out on Twitter, like if it's 70 minutes and we get 5
minutes or something ground breaking, I'll find.
Out. It's 30's how I'm going, yeah.
30 season, 4 win. We'll find out, hopefully.
Yeah, like, yeah, I was. There was never that one last
thing. Oh, here's.
One right thing, it always felt like it was going to that next
(23:43):
level. And it just ended.
Yep, it was. And then they're like, all
right, we're all take a selfie and a dip.
I'm like, really? They didn't even take a picture.
I didn't even. Yeah, they did.
I didn't even notice that. It was just, it was just, it's
just hard to describe because, Idon't know, it felt like they
were doing their first panel ever.
(24:04):
And the first panel that they chose was look how fucking dope
we are. Yeah, I was like, yeah, we know.
That's why we're here. The audience was pretty dry on
that one. Well, it's, it's OK.
So like the panel itself, a lot of times with those industry
panels, it's like 8 people or they'll bring, they'll bring out
constantly bring out people. Directors, voice actors there.
(24:24):
Was there was two people the whole time and then they brought
one dude who had nothing to do with making any of the anime, so
it was just off. Yeah, it was a weird panel.
What that one guy did though, the guy who worked for Fate
Grand Order in or what that thatlocalization team when it came
to NA, it did get me to boot up the games.
(24:47):
I did see that, yeah. I was like.
You know what this guy's talkingabout?
Fake granddaughter. I was a fake granddaughter head.
I'm going to open up the game right now.
I am going to throw a 10 roll because fuck it, we're went in
Rome. We ball.
Went at anime Expo. Fuck it 10 roll time and I got
my 4 star Saber altar for the first time that I've somehow
(25:12):
I've played the game for multiple years and never got her
and I just said fuck it we ball and so now they got me back in.
The only thing that would be better would be a four-star gold
ship pull from the UMA museum and gotcha game.
But outside of that, that was sick.
Watching that live. I'm like, because like I've seen
Great Fate, Grand Order and likeI kind of know like when you get
(25:32):
the nuts, like the screens, likeYo-yo, you would just get the
jackpot. And I.
Look over at Trump. I'm like, yo, was that altar
Saber? And you'd like be like, yeah,
yeah, it's not as funny as shit. It's like, oh shit, try just
pull the forts. Our gotcha.
Yeah, that was fun. The Yeah, the the Fate Grand
Order of Gods were there talkingto me in person.
(25:54):
And what's up? I was like, all right, here's my
offering to you. I still have 200 Saints courts
just sitting in my inventory, sofuck it, let's roll it.
Yeah. So, yeah, that was the best part
of it. That's.
I mean, yeah, Virgin Punk lookedreally cool, but aside from
that, no teases. So with it being the 20th
(26:15):
anniversary. That was I can't believe, Oh I
forgot that they did. That too, yeah.
It was the 20th anniversary of Anaplex.
That's like, like, that's why they were going through the
history so much. Which is cool.
I'm fine with. That.
But if you're making this much of A deal about it being your
20th anniversary, put something out like I thought it was going
to be like a new some new Blu-ray compilation, like there
(26:37):
was edge runners, but. That was the only new Blu-ray
that they. Announced, yeah.
And that's not coming out to like October.
October. Yeah.
You can't even pre-order until August.
Yeah, you can't even order untilAugust, and they didn't.
Even have anything new for demonSlayer which is crazy to think
about. Yeah, just they replayed the PV
for the Infinity Castle. Yeah, there's no, nothing new
(26:57):
like no like teasers or anythingnews.
Yeah, yeah, It was just. It was a really bad panel.
It was just. A stinker of a panel.
So yeah, after that. So that was, that was when, that
was when we split afterwards. That was when we split, yeah.
When you want to get food, you want to do the.
Sports one, right? Yep.
Yeah, so you can talk. On OK yeah, so I went to a
(27:20):
sports and anime panel done by. It was ran by a guy who is a
scriptwriter. He is a film, whatever.
He wrote a book that's like animated manga to Hollywood, I
think it's called. He's a professor at the
University of South Carolina. And he just had, like, when I
(27:42):
saw that, first of all, I was like, OK, sick.
First of all, an actual university professors here,
that's awesome. And they just had like a cadence
that was like above and beyond what I was expecting.
So along with him, it was a writer from the Athletic, which
is like Sports Illustrated or ESPN.
It's like a very popular sports writing.
They had the English voice actorfor Hinata from Haiku.
(28:05):
And then they had some like business dude from Ban Kai or
whatever. He he barely talked.
But that panel was like above and beyond anything I was
expecting going into. It was like the exact opposite
of any Plex. It was a panel of at least three
people who were very passionate about not only anime, but
sports, which I'm a huge fan of both and sort of connecting the
(28:28):
correlations between the two andshowcasing how it influenced how
sports influenced Japanese like society and how it's influencing
Western society like now. So they were talking about how
shows like Attack, the number one and Haiku were such a huge
volleyball influence in Japan. Same thing with Slam Dunk, with
(28:52):
Major, with Mix. There's a bunch of these these
sports anime that like revolutionize how Japan views
sports. And it was so cool just because
I, I know of the manga and the anime attack #1 it's a shojo
volleyball anime. And I didn't realize it was
based off of a true story. So they went into the the back
(29:14):
story of that story, which was insane.
I didn't know it was a thing. It's like in the late 50s rule,
Japan didn't have a volleyball team.
They wanted to compete in the Olympics.
So they had this coach who is also a warehouse manager, like a
textile warehouse manager. And like was like all these
(29:38):
women who worked at the textile plant.
He's like, OK, you are going to be Japan's national volleyball
team. And they're like, what the fuck?
But then they they went with it and they were.
So they're telling the story like they would work until 5:00
and then they would go practice from 6:00 to 2:00 AM seven days
(29:59):
a week. And they won gold.
It's like, I didn't how it's like, how have I never heard of
this story? It's not insane.
So he was talking about like a movie that was based off of it.
Attack Number One is based off of it.
And so that's how it kind of started.
I was like, this is awesome. Like this is like incorporating
real life stuff into anime, intosports.
And then they did like I alreadyknew about like the haiku stuff,
(30:21):
like how that was a spike in like club volleyball.
Participation went up like 30% in Japan after haiku came out or
something like that. Slam dunk is the reason why
basketball is so popular in Japan.
It's like all these things are like, but it's not only just
like saying that the like he presented like actual evidence
to support it. And that's why I loved and I'm
(30:43):
not even fronting. It was one of the best panels
I've ever been to because it wasa combination of people who love
what they're doing and are backing it up with like
everything that they have with it.
So that was an incredible, incredible panel.
I know you came in like halfway.Yeah.
So maybe you didn't, maybe I don't know if it was like the
same feeling because I feel likeif you were there early, how
(31:04):
they presented the beginnings really set the tone for that
panel. But I still think, hopefully you
got something out of it. Yeah, it was.
It was really cool because as soon as I sat down and I got the
vibe and how the people were talking or the the presenters
were discussing the topic at hand that you could tell like,
oh, this is a intellectual panel.
(31:29):
So like the guy from The Athletic?
Yeah. I just assumed watched like 3
anime and that's the kind of he knew everything.
I was like, this dude knows his shit.
He knows ball. He.
Was because like I mentioned Mix, which is from, I don't
know, the 60s or something like that.
It's a baseball anime and manga. And then they had a, they had
(31:53):
like a reversion of it like 5 years ago.
I had no idea that it was that old I I knew of the new one.
Sorry, the new one's called mix,the old one's called.
Oh, it's based off of something.It's it's it's it's like the
same characters, but they like renamed it, redid it this year.
Like like Megalo Box is is Joe? Yeah, yeah, I mean, his name is
(32:13):
literally Joe and Megalo Box. So it's like it's something
similar to that or oh man, I lost my train of thought.
I did that a couple times. It's been a long night.
It was a very long night, but I guess I was just more than
anything I was just like blown away by like what they were
presenting and backing it up. Look, because I think it's a
huge thing because when you go into sometimes you go in the
(32:35):
panels and be like, this is the third highest selling whatever.
And there's like, there's no like infograph or anything like
that. Like these guys had like stats
and everything backing up. I'm like, okay, fuck yeah.
Like let's go. So that was when people do like
a statistics based. Yeah, not it wasn't based in
statistics, but they brought up a lot of statistics and they
(32:56):
backed up. I was like huge plus.
I kind of felt a similar way when I went to.
So I'm up in the in the South Bay, in the San Francisco Bay
Area. You from the Bay Area?
Where they from? The Bay where they hyphy?
Get hyphy and go dumb. And go dumb.
Not get drunk. For those something where the
players begin their lingo from. There.
(33:17):
You go tell me when they go. So, yeah, so I'm a big Super
Smash Bros, a guy and the, the big super major in North America
is called Genesis and it's held in, it's been held most of the
time in San Jose. It sometimes is in Oakland.
(33:38):
But I remember like 2 years ago I went and they it's, it's a
small grass. Well, it's not small, but it's a
grassroots con. It's all done by the community
and everything. And so it's, they don't have
like industry panels, things like that.
But the panel that they did havethere, that really is the first
(33:58):
time I ever went to a panel at this tournament because I had
gone for a few years. It was like producing E sports
and I guess the guy that like runs the streams or whatever.
He also had worked like Worlds for League, He worked like
Rocket League, he worked Dota, whatever.
(34:18):
He worked all these other big terms.
He worked EVO, he managed like he produced that show for a
while and that was really cool because like as a viewer, like
love watching E sports, watchingthe streams and everything like
that. But yeah, him digging into the
behind the scenes of it's like, oh, here are the numbers.
(34:38):
This is how much it costs to rent a venue.
This is how much the union workers charge you to bring to
unload the trucks and everything.
And he like broke it down so much.
Like, OK, you want to run a tournament, you want to run an E
sport, you want to run this team, this is what you got to
do. And like this, that's the inside
ball, that's the inside knowledge that you could really
(35:01):
sink into. And that I thought was
interesting. So when I went to the panel the
athletics in anime, what was that one?
It was like, yeah, it was like anime athletics or athletics and
anime or something like that. Hearing them breakdown, the
inside knowledge of like, how it's growing, it's grown by this
(35:21):
much. We can point to this show that
we see these influencers and celebrities, these athletes
bringing it up on their own platforms, like bringing in all
this data and information. I, I I love that shit.
Yeah, I love that. Shit and you miss it when he
says what's the highest growing sports like anime slash manga
(35:43):
franchise and it's Uma Museve they mentioned in this sport
because it's like it's getting so big you can't ignore it.
It's crazy. Is horse racing a sport?
Yeah, 100%. Oh, I guess like the people
actually participating, not the people betting on it.
Yeah, the horse racing is a sport for sure.
(36:04):
I don't know why. I just thought it was like the
people who were betting on it were like counted as like, no,
no, the people actually on the horses.
Johnny, the people that are big on the horses are called
degenerates. You would know.
Yeah, I. Would know.
I could say that because I am one of.
Them Actually, no. We are competitive gamblers.
(36:26):
Hey my plus minus on gambling islike minus a shit ton so like
whatever. I'm more of a cooperative
because when we go to Vegas, we always do the team slots.
We that's another podcast how you could use, how you can take
advantage. Of Vegas, but collective
downfall you. What do you do?
We rise together and we fall together.
(36:47):
The real I'm not going to get into it.
We're talking to AX. Nobody cares.
If you care about gambling, justDM me.
I'll talk to you. If you all if you all learn how
to play craps, let me know. So, so that was that was the
panel. Do you do you have any other?
I just, I was just blown away. I, I was so blown away that I
had to go like say. To.
(37:10):
I went down afterwards. I'm like, this was so well done
because I feel like there's a lot of times where people just
like they'll make up, it's all done in PowerPoints or whatever,
and they'll just like read the PowerPoint bullet for bullets
and maybe they'll add some context and maybe they'll add
some like whatever, like verbiage past what they wrote,
but like it's really scripted. And this just felt way more free
(37:34):
flowing. It felt like not only was like
they had like the structure of how they want to set it up, but
they allowed for the creativity to expand on it.
And I thought just what they didlike breaking down, they didn't.
They didn't mention Megalo box, but they mentioned like
tomorrow. No Joe a ton high Q Kuroko no
(37:54):
basket blue lock, because the voice actor plays a blue lock
character. So it makes sense.
And so I actually brought up a question for them about like the
mental side of sports and they answered that really well.
I I appreciate them taking theirtime, but they were mostly
focusing on like how like how cool anime and sports is.
And that's why like people want to play it.
And I'm like, I, I actually like100% agree.
(38:17):
It's like the same reason why you see so much like, anime
clothing at gyms. It's like people just want to be
both like Goku. Like it's like it's a thing like
anime influences in different ways.
And like, I think like that was one of them that was like, yeah,
I totally get, especially in Japan.
I remember because I, yeah, I used to manage gyms a couple
(38:39):
locations for a small chain. Oh, it wasn't a small chain, but
it was a chain that did not havevery good business practices.
And they had to change their name five different times
because they're dodging Better Business Bureau.
F scores smart. But I was like, hey, they made
me a manager. I'm, I'm, I'm 19.
(39:01):
I like, yeah, he's like, I don'tknow.
What am I? What do I?
What can I do? I get it.
But but yeah, like during so that was like mid twenty 10s and
yeah, seeing all like the the shaker bottles with the the
Dragon Ball Z with Jim bro puns and like swole like Goku and you
(39:29):
know, like that, you really started to see that start to
blow up. And that was kind of around the
same time that, like, anime started.
Getting more and more. Mainstream.
This is now they have those likewaifu shaker cups now.
Yeah, yeah. Not in the.
Gym. Yeah, I mean if you want.
To where almost are you bringingyour Shaker Cup?
I use mine. I know this is after dark, but I
(39:50):
ain't saying nothing do. You have do you have a waifu
cup? Hands up.
Bro. Can't.
Can't catch me slipping. You'll never catch me slipping.
I'll be checking his bag you'll.Never catch me slipping.
Never. You definitely bought 1.
Yeah, so we finished up that, you and I and then Johnny.
(40:12):
Did. You so I went to I left you
after I had finished eating. So I'm gonna go meet up with
Pete and you. Where did you go?
So we so while I was waiting foryou guys to finish, I kind of
just walked around. It's like looking around for
some stuff, you know, they had some.
Exhibit. Hall, right?
Yeah, No, I was at the Was it the entertainment?
(40:36):
Hall, I get those, So yeah. They should name them something
different. They have the exact same things,
yeah. Because if you go to the most
cons, it's like Artist Alley. And then it's the dealer's room.
Dealer Hall. Yeah, Dealer Hall.
And this is what was it Entertainment hall?
Exhibition hall? An artist.
(40:57):
But you're also buying shit. It's like everything combined
was like you could just separatethem but like.
Because of space and stuff. Well, it's like I I put the two
like when I saw entertainment hall, I just assumed that was
like the dealers hall and that was like.
The different name. For it, it was just different,
which makes sense because it's so freaking big, yeah.
They need 3. Different.
(41:18):
They need three different rooms for merch because all these
weaves just don't know how to spend their money on craps.
I don't. Know well, I think you're, I
mean, do you want to explain something?
Do I want to explain something? Like what you're wearing?
Oh, Oh yeah. So.
Speaking of spending money. Speaking of spending money, so
this is I this is such a funny start.
(41:38):
So we wanted to find the side games booth.
And the whole point of finding the side games booth was they
had the round one preloadable Uma Moussa make cards.
So I was going to go there specifically to get that.
And then we walked past them like, oh, I bet they got merch
and they had this walk. I I think it's a hoppy.
Yeah. I got a official Uma Musume
(42:01):
Hoppy. You want to show it off?
I mean I for the the audio listeners it is.
Also the Taylor. Moon jacket.
It has a nice great or not great.
Yeah, yeah, you. Yeah, it's got some racing.
Wait, let me. See if I can rear.
Design. Let me see if I.
(42:22):
Can read that uma musume polite Dato.
Yeah, just go to just go to our YouTube if you want to see this.
But yeah. It's not the yeah, I mean, it's
pretty Derby. It's been a long night.
Like, look, I dropped, I dropped$60.00 on Derby tonight and I
dropped $75 on this. Like who gives a shit?
(42:44):
Like whatever, Who cares? Like I think this is like it's
kind. It's like low key warm enough
for the LA night. Yeah, yeah, dummy.
Yeah. Yeah, get.
My soundboard, boom, I don't have it.
Left that one in. Perfect for the soundboard hit.
But it's on Discord. Yeah, we're not.
Recording on the first first piece of merch I buy but I
(43:05):
dropped $75.00 so far so not toobad.
I feel like it's not that bad. Yeah, Johnny, could you pass me
my merch that I got right there?Oh, is it this?
Yeah, that was this. Yeah.
I feel like is a really good, great deal.
Great deal. So I might I might pull some see
what's in the starter deck as ifit's a as if it's a card pack
(43:26):
I'm opening yeah. So that was your first purchase
mine. So I have no idea how why
Schwartz works. I've never played it before.
I've never looked at the instructions of how to play.
I've never watched any actually.I might have seen like 5 seconds
of why Schwartz World Championships on YouTube or
(43:46):
something but I have no idea anything about this game.
I just think that Why Schwartz cards are really cool.
They're basically screenshots ofthe anime, but I think they're
really cool. Neat pieces of paper that have
really cool artwork on them. I got a Guilty Gear Strive 1 and
(44:08):
it was only $5 for a starter deck and so this will go into my
binder of other random white Schwartz cards I've collected
over the years and. This isn't the entertainment
booth of like the card games andstuff.
Yes, it was like AI think it wasthe IT was like some it was.
Like the? Opposite side it was like right
(44:28):
next to like the magic cards andall the other.
Stuff. No, it was on like the other
side of where everybody. Was playing games yeah yeah cuz
cuz normally I don't know I feel.
Like cuz I was looking for like Uma museve.
I'm pretty sure they I didn't see this.
Order we were, we were in the wrong hall you could find
looking for it. And then I pull out the map and
it's like, hey, we're on the other side of the convention.
(44:50):
See, we figured it out, so. We got there, we got there.
There was a lot. About the It's not about the end
point, it's about the journey tothe destination.
Well, I was rushing to another panel.
Cosplay is Himmel, you should know it's about the journey and
not the journey's end. Well, he died alone, so.
(45:12):
He did not do OK. We already had this
conversation. Himmel was drowning before.
He died. They literally say in the anime
he died alone. He died.
Alone, physically. Physically, there was no one
there and. He also didn't marry or love
anybody, but that did not stop Himmel.
Ever. That's his head cannon I guess.
(45:34):
It's 100% he loved Freeman, but a man has needs.
You know who else loved Free Ren?
Who and who else loved our boy Himmel right here?
Our boy Johnny. Our boy Johnny.
Yes, Sir. Oh yeah, and his.
New best friend, interesting encounter, and this man is going
to go viral. Oh, he's going viral.
(45:55):
He's about to be the biggest hiton Annie Talk.
Filmed his first TikTok today. Filmed his first TikTok today.
Totally interrupted the the Uma Musume Psy games booth search.
Totally. As soon as we Yeah, as soon as
we like that. Was a side.
Quest let's go find the Boo and then Johnny.
(46:17):
Johnny, do you want? To put on my main quest.
Yeah, yeah. So run us through how you felt
about your first. Your first TikTok.
Yeah, so I was just sitting. That was just like in my
cosplay. I was Cosmos, FEMA.
I don't have it here because it's 2:00 AM, but maybe I'll put
it on for some of the other episodes.
Yeah. But anyways, I was, you know,
(46:39):
walking around, you know, I saw a couple of guys and girls, they
were dressed up in like free runcharacters.
You know, they had like they hadfree run, they had start, they
actually didn't have hemo. But so, you know, I, I was like,
hey, you know, I figured I mightgo, go next to them, say hi
every kind of just like, yeah, whatever.
I think they were busy with something.
But you know, they had this one guy who like he had a free run
(46:59):
wig, pair of sunglasses and about 300 lbs of muscle.
The dude was built like a rectangle.
He was taking steroids, by the way, just for the record.
That's an accusation, but you know, I believe you.
He had more back acne than I didwhen I was 14.
We're probably going to see him tomorrow.
So. Say it to his face.
(47:20):
I'll yeah, say it to his face. He will probably.
If I said he was on gear, he would probably admit to it.
I mean, yeah, you can you take that as an as a compliment too,
if like, oh, you think I'm on gear, you see how big I am?
You think I need that to get here?
Yeah, yeah, he does. He 100.
Percent Anyways, like to go and he was like Freeman on trend
(47:42):
walked out to me. It's like, hey man, I need you.
Trend. And he was like, yeah, I didn't
know I need a bodybuilding ball like technology.
For steroids. By train balloon.
Sandwiches are steroids. Yeah.
Trent Ren was like, hey, you know.
He's a big Trent Twins guy. I don't know who those are.
(48:04):
Yes, you do. That's why you laughed.
You're right, I do know who theyare.
Boston and 4K everybody. Saw it.
Anyways, he walks up to me like, hey man, I need you for our
skit. I need you to, you know, bump
into free rent and like hit a pose and be like, Oh my God, I
just found my love. And then, you know, Jack, the
(48:24):
giga chat over here is going to come by and steal your girls.
I'm like, hell yeah, let's do it.
You know, that was it was quite of experience.
I'm sure you got that on video. I had no idea what was even
like, what they were. Even that dude went into
director mode and I respected it.
I was like, hey, he knows what he's doing.
I can see that. I understand Johnny just do
(48:46):
whatever he says and I have no idea what the story was.
End up on Tik Tok's front page tomorrow then yeah.
I'll be intrigued to see if we like actually go on TikTok to
see if we can find it because I for some reason that dude just
screams like he has a shit ton of followers.
I might show up in a picture foranother panel that I went to,
(49:07):
which we'll talk about later. OK, but.
Yeah, he was. I could tell.
The way he was directing trafficis like he.
Knew he. Knew his shit.
You've made maybe the top of people that he was with, like
were there for him. A little bit, right?
Yeah, like he like he have like the mafia boss you.
Know like 100%? He runs all of their TikTok or
(49:29):
all all of the other cosplayers like he would.
Beat up the mimic if he found it.
He's not getting trapped in thatthing.
Yeah, that. Mimic.
No Mimic that fits that body, let me tell you.
It's hard to explain how big this dude was because he was
like 5-6. And no, he was as tall as me, I
think. No, he was.
I feel like he's shorter than you.
(49:50):
Really. I'm pretty sure you're shorter
than you. Maybe.
But OK, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
He was 57, probably. Two, No, dude, he's he might be
300. He was huge.
He might be 300 and. And then 10% body fat, I'm like,
that was the thing Trent mentioned.
I was like, that's another thingthat that dude was on roids.
(50:12):
His Yeah, his arms were bigger than my legs.
Yeah, both of my arms combined, I don't think was bigger.
Like I'm trying to think of likean anime character that would
like resemble this guy like Broly.
Yeah, some Dragon Ball Z. Ridiculous.
Character. He was big ass like biceps and
triceps. Krillin was jacked.
That's what this dude looked like.
(50:32):
And it was like, it was, it was kind of just like, I don't know,
it was like, it's like driving in the night and you see a
firework off. You're like, what the hell.
Like he was like, I was like, what the this dude is what is
that? And I.
Was just like, he was nice and Ifinished doing cool.
I finished doing the thing. He was like, oh, you know, like
(50:54):
you want to like shout out your TikTok.
I'm like, I don't have TikTok. He's like, oh, I'll just find
your Instagram. So I gave him on Instagram.
I don't know what he's going to do with it.
He's not taggy or something. Yeah, but.
But yeah, it was. Just one of those things that
was just like in a room full of like skinny ass weebs.
Yeah. Or it's like, it's like skinny
ass weebs or neckbeards. Yeah, we had just the most
(51:16):
roided out dude. I was just like, and he asked
Johnny to do a TikTok. I was like what the fuck is
happening? Bro with like the fucking rock,
if he was a rock, like yeah. It's crazy.
He like saw you and I was like I.
But The thing is, there were other hemales like just chilling
around on there. How do you pronounce it?
E-mail OK, Hemale. Yeah, Hemale, anyway.
(51:37):
I wasn't going to say. Anything like So you're using
his pronoun and his gender and his name.
Hey, I'm not assuming any. I'm not assuming anything, but
yeah, what's what's your pronounlike?
I feel like e-mail. I feel like he saw me like
approach them. So he was like, yeah, I need
that guy. That's right, because he went up
here like high. Yes.
(51:57):
And. Then he went away.
He was like the other guys were like, Nah, these guys are going
to. And he looked at me as like,
it's I found the one. He's the one.
This guy right here, he's. Got the acting chops I've been.
Looking for I could tell the wayhe was confidently delivered
that introduction to us. Hollywood, CA's got nothing on
John. Is acting well, you know, next
time I come back to LA, maybe I'll be in Hollywood.
(52:19):
Maybe go it's. Not, it's not too far away,
yeah. Don't never give up on your
dreams. Like 12 miles away where we're
saying Hollywood, isn't it like 12?
It's a bit far something. Like.
That 14 miles it's. Not that much anyway.
I saw after the free run gym experience I went to the.
(52:39):
Geeks. Plus panel with the trash taste
boys and a couple other people it.
Was the trash taste. Actually, it wasn't.
Connor didn't show up. I didn't, I thought it was like
purely trash chase until I actually looked at things like
oh they're like 1 of. I will say it was a lot better
than I thought it was going to be because I thought it was just
(53:00):
going to be like the boys talking UPS on stage for like an
hour. But like so darn was the one who
like was the one who came up on stage first to like introduce
himself and followed by Emily Emery Chu and then Sydney.
And then they kind of like did like an introduction of like who
they are the geeks plus and stuff.
(53:20):
Like it wasn't actually like just trash.
They saw actually kind of like asmall section.
So like they started off by likeadvertising their new trash
taste special. You know, Joey had to plug his
merch because you know, of course he does his clothing
brand stuff like that. I.
Hate that his clothing looks good.
It look that that Ava thing thatlooked really.
Good. Yeah, I saw the radio Ava tag.
(53:42):
I was like, oh, this is like a alegit.
Ava, they had all those. They had Donanon, they had a
couple of other animes. As well.
Yeah, he's got, he's got. He's got the yeah.
They were also selling Trash Taste merch at the Yeah at the
place as well of course. Yeah, What'd you pick up?
I. Didn't pick up anything.
I think it was. I think it was all just like you
could only look at it. I don't think you could buy.
(54:02):
Anything. Yeah.
Well, we talked about what we wegot.
I got the I got the Guilty Gear cards.
He got his thing. What did you?
Get I didn't have it here, but Igot a plushie.
You got the free run plush. Yeah, I'll, I'll bring it up
some other time. It's in the other room right
now. Like in Tomorrow We'll.
We'll we'll drop all our loot down later.
(54:23):
That's actually not a bad idea. We'll just like, throw it on a
pile after we're all I'll wear. This all?
Yeah, I'll leave it in the frontnext.
Time video. I'll play Yeah.
Blilty Gear white shorts. But anyway, so like about like
the geeks plus panels like the most like the thing that
everyone like got really hyped about was like Garn like
announced that he was making hisown anime.
(54:44):
How did you react? No, it's crazy that Garn was
able to announce something big and the entire Andy Plex
industry panel could not. That's.
Actually. True Sony.
The mega powers of Sony. You couldn't have one game
corporation. Or one degenerate on YouTube you
know? Apparently, one degenerate wins.
But you know, it was actually like really cool, like they
(55:05):
showed us like a quick like previews, like the animation
looked really cool. They had like a bunch of like
unique designs and stuff. They showed us the main
characters. And then, you know, Garn kind of
like showed us like how you got inspired to do the anime, like
what it means for him as like a content creator, because I think
that like he's been around for like decades.
So like just. Being a decade, yeah, I.
(55:26):
Was like, I don't think he's. Been.
Around. I don't think he's that old yet.
I think he's my age so unless he's been making YouTube since
he was 14. I just started when he was in
college. So, okay, decade.
I don't know decade 2, but yeah,round enough.
But anyways, well, he was sayinghow like it was his dream to be
like one day, if he had the connections, the money, the time
(55:49):
and like the community to make his own anime.
It's something that he would love to do.
And like, now that like he has this chance.
Yeah. But I mean, like, that's really
cool, you know? You know, like, it is not like
it's not like a full anime. It's like it's a.
It's a. 16 minute movie. But it it's still something that
like, it's so cool. I think it's like moving in the
right direction where like people like having individuals
(56:10):
being able to like think like have all these ideas and
actually put it like into something that exists.
Also, it's going to be free on YouTube as well.
So like you don't have to pay todo anything with that.
Although they're selling merch as if.
As if. Other anime streaming things
aren't free. Yeah, but it's.
On 9 anime, what's up? He's going to put it exclusively
(56:31):
on 9 anime. I might as well.
Dot RU specifically, not whatever any of the other.
Yeah, but they're also selling Marsh already at the, yeah, at
XO. That's a, that's a, that's a
money. Grab for sure.
Hey man, they got the designs and stuff already, so you know,
(56:51):
yeah, they. Got It's the last round of.
They got to promote. They got to promote the new
show, you know. Yeah, do.
You. Well, yeah, it's coming out in
August, so, you know, I'll be waiting for that on the channel.
Yeah, I. Compared that when we were, when
we were talking about earlier, talking about how like gaming
Youtubers are starting or eitherlike making their game or making
(57:11):
games or their starting game publishing, game publishing like
Donkey with Big MO, Big MO Yogscast and their games.
And played. I played Raynard, who is a
Hearthstone player, made his ownHearthstone type deck building
game called the Bizarre and I played that.
Oh, I didn't. I had no idea that was made by
(57:33):
like. Someone in the community, A
former Hearthstone and Magic theGathering player.
I only know that from Northern line, Northern line videos and
streams that he gets angry sometimes.
Also like people making their own like E sports teams.
And yeah, yeah, making their ownE sports teams because they're
like, hey, I love video games and I love gaming.
I just like I'm not I can't GoPro, but I can own a team
(57:58):
that'll GoPro but. I was like with Gig.
I think like, the reason why he was able to do it is because
like, he had like people back him up from like, his connection
is like Katakawa, but he also was able to, you know, like one
of like the main music director for the show, Kevin Penkins.
The. Almost the almost Kevin.
That was a new pronunciation I haven't heard the S on.
(58:21):
It no I've been messing up the whole time I've.
Been calling him Eric Perkins orsomething like that.
The one of like Eric Hartman. But anyways, Eric.
Hartman. Kevin.
You got it. Penkins.
No, there's no way. Panty letters.
Pankin, pankin, there you. Go Kevin Pankin.
Yeah, it was the meeting of this.
Guy, you know, great, great anime as well.
But yeah, so it's so, yeah, I'm looking forward to the music.
(58:45):
We got a little preview, but yeah, I'm looking forward to the
whole thing. Let me ask you this question.
If you were a rich multi facetedYouTube, what type of anime
would you create with all your funds?
What type of anime? Cause like for me, I've always
had this in mind. I've always would if I had like
30 quadrillion dollars, I would make a hockey anime.
(59:08):
I think hockey would be perfect for like a shown in style
sports. It just it's perfect.
It has the physicality that others sports anime that don't
show that I think could prosper in like a shown in style sports
anime. So I've always wanted to do ice
hockey. I would have I would go to you
foldable. And so you, you already you, I
(59:32):
wouldn't buy you have like the studios in mind.
You got like the directors. You already know everything
which. Fate arc is.
Trying to go in. With us make I'd have them make
more of today's menu for. 500 episodes.
Have Shiro make no recipes. That was a fun.
That was a fun show. What are you, Johnny?
(59:53):
Yeah, I'm, I don't know, actually, I think that you know
what I was, I would maybe consider like I don't have like
a game in mind, but maybe like something like the style of
Arcane or like it's like an anime, but it's like each, every
episode is like 40 minutes. So you just want that that
(01:00:14):
structure that like. Yeah, because I feel like so
much of watching anime is like, and it's not ruined, but it like
it feels awful. You have to separate it into 20
minutes because. You have to because of TV slots
but like Netflix has the freedomof not running or I guess they
do run ads but like it's a completely different.
Story. You can just like have it put
the story slowly. No, I know.
(01:00:36):
Exactly, you can actually let the story finish rather than
being OK hard time cut at hard network out.
Because like, yeah, because likeTV and it's like, you know, it's
11 minutes, cut commercial, comeback and finish.
It I mean, I play a lot of like a lot of studios are doing more
Movies Now as well. As.
Less. Limited as they should.
(01:00:57):
And they realize that, you know, people will actually go and
watch it. Thanks, Demon Slayer.
So. Geez, I've I've said it multiple
times that Demon Slayer completely changed the
landscapes of anime movies for the better.
Yeah, it is. It's an overwhelming plus what
Demon Slayer did for anime. I guess I honestly like maybe
(01:01:18):
it's like I don't have like a specific anime and Maya would
just like to be able to like normalize not having anime limit
itself to Japanese TV broadcast rules.
Oh, I see what you're saying. So like, because it's sort of
like how when we were growing up, like TV was always on CBS,
NBC, whatever, and then when it switched to Netflix or Hulu,
(01:01:40):
blah, blah, doesn't matter. It changed how you structure the
episodes because you had the free reigns of not cutting for a
commercial. So I think that's sick of shit.
I think that I think that formatwould be really good.
I think it because we do have anime like that, like something
like Pluto is an animated that is like that.
It's on, well, it's on Netflix, so it checks out why it was like
(01:02:01):
that. But that's like, you know,
episodes are 51 minutes. It flows through the whole story
I think a little bit better in the structure that it is.
So I do like that. Yeah, It's like thinking about
like, how like, anime in the past was limited by like, you
know, like they were episodic because like, a lot of people
wouldn't be able to, like, watcheverything every single week.
So you have to make sure that like if you missed an episode, a
(01:02:24):
plot would so make sense. And then you would have recaps
and like, just like super slow fighters or anything because
like, you have to make one episode every week, stretch that
shit out. So it's just like as like we're
not as limited anymore. We allow people to like do more.
So I think that like the next step would be to like stop
(01:02:46):
limiting anime. This is obviously, this is way
too fucking smart for how I'm feeling right now.
Like I think what you're saying is like, this is like, well,
this is a well structured like I'm just I'm too drunk for this
shit. Bro Bro fucking fried his brains
out. Before he's like.
Bringing it back to After Dark I.
(01:03:07):
Was like Johnny, you're like, you're spinning because he's
drinking water. You spin right now of like, I'm
like, you do know it's like next.
It's 2:00 AM right now. The next.
Step for me is to get fluent in Japanese and tell them to get
their shit together. No, OK, now I like what you I
like what you put down. Oh yeah, we'll, we'll, we'll
get, we'll get to work. We gonna like you and I not like
(01:03:29):
personally, but speaking about like the the structure, like
being constrained by TV. We as wrestling fans saw that
saw that difference immediately when WWE Raw went to Smackdown
or not went wrong, went to Smackdown.
Netflix. Well, yeah, when it went to
Netflix and they didn't have to be out right at, you know.
(01:03:53):
Yeah, 'cause they. 10:00 PM or whatever.
For non wrestling fans, Raw would be 3 hours no matter what.
You have to put three hours of content and and now that they're
on Netflix, they're like, I think we got through everything.
We could just stop and it's like, oh, it's been 2 hours and
21 minutes. It's like funny, when you don't
force the extra 40 minutes, it flows way better.
(01:04:14):
It's like crazy how that works. So.
It's like, or if like a match isgoing long, you don't have to
cut the next match in time and 1/2.
So then you're like, what the fuck was going on there?
It's like, oh, they ran out of time.
Yep. So before we get to our last
panel, I said we have, I have totalk about something that was
like a genuine shock this year for AX.
(01:04:35):
And I think it's a combination of two things.
One, I think that they spread out AXA lot more this year.
It seems like it, but and then Iguess 2, I forgot.
I don't know why I said 2. There's only one thing that was
the only. Thing maybe?
Maybe you remember the lines being shorter?
Well, yeah, it's just because ofthat.
It's. Not like the accumulation of
(01:04:55):
thing, but like AX doesn't seem busy.
We should. We should wait until tomorrow.
Don't. Hopefully I.
Don't wait till Friday. Saturday this isn't.
I. Mentioned the trash.
I want to say like the Geeks plus line was not long at all.
Yeah, I got in like maybe an hour before the event and like
an hour and a half and I was like in like the first block of.
(01:05:17):
People waiting, we went to the Anyplex industry panel, which I
thought would be pretty busy andit kind of was, but we waited in
line an hour before the panel started, which I actually
thought that we were pushing it.And by the time we got in there,
I would say 1000 extra seats. So we got like really good.
Front seats, insanely good seats.
I'm just like, there's like nobody, like everybody who wants
(01:05:40):
to be here is in line and there's no one else.
It was weird. I think it did fill up
eventually, but like, I don't know if we're like how AX is
changing it because I know it's sort of the thing where it's
like you got to be 2-3 hours early for your panels because if
you don't, you're not going to make it.
And it's like we could have justwalked into that panel and would
have gotten a fine seat. We didn't have to wait.
(01:06:02):
We we made an hour for essentially good seats.
You know I have AI have a hypothesis for where do people
want? Spit it.
But that is all right, we're getting.
There were like out. There.
I would guess there were at least a couple 100 people
waiting at the Genshin line. Oh, maybe so.
They were, I think they were giving out free tote pegs or
whatever. So I was like, Honk, I saw
(01:06:22):
Genshin ZZZZ, and it was just lines across the block.
Like it was just an insane amount.
Also, they were doing a cosplay shoot, you know, they had like
some cosplay girl on there and then like people lined up to
take photos. That was also adding on to it.
OK, but like that that that is people.
But like this is we're talking like this is a massive con, like
(01:06:43):
people running the gents and whatever is 1% of whatever, who
knows? But it's like I was so used the
first year I came to AX. It was like it was kind of like
those pictures that you see. It was like nothing but in
certain areas, but like it was crowded in certain spots and it
wasn't crowded in other spots. That's how I, that was my first
experience with AX this year waslike it wasn't busy at all.
(01:07:07):
Like we thought the line to get in what we probably walked like
a half a mile and we got in in 10 minutes.
It's like, it's like, I don't, Idon't know.
It was. It was weird.
I think. I can answer your question and
this goes back to your hypothesis.
I think people just don't watch anime.
You go to the Hoyo verse panel, you're not watching anime,
(01:07:29):
you're just playing gotcha gamesand like you don't watch anime.
Why would you go to a panel? I'm, I think that nowadays
people are just going to their like favorite gotcha game,
they're getting their merch and then they're getting out.
There's definitely a. Ship they're not lining up to go
to like some panel. They're just lining up to get
their drip or whatever and then there.
(01:07:50):
Is like it is that where it's like, you know, the older
generations probably don't go toas many cons and newer
generations do And how many 18 year olds are interested in the
antiplex industry panel? I'm all I guess not a lot.
So it's like it's one of those things where it's like, yes,
there it's a different shift in like what people are interested
(01:08:12):
in, but it's like it's AX is a global convention.
It is the biggest anime convention in the world, if I'm
not mistaken. And it felt like I was at my
local con, like it was busy, butit wasn't packed.
So it's a, it's an overall positive, but it was just weird
thinking that like I if I if I'mnot 2 hours, I'm fucked like 2
(01:08:34):
hours early for a panel, I'm fucked and it turns out I was an
hour early and I could have goneat the start.
Hopefully that's true for tomorrow.
Tomorrow. We're tomorrow.
That's the big. Test.
Yeah, that's going to be a rough.
One, we have free rim panel tomorrow and we are going hours
early, so we'll see. Hopefully this is one of these
things that's like, I kind of hope that we do need to go early
(01:08:57):
because I would hate to go 3 hours early and find out that I
didn't need to. Go.
I'm fine. I'm fine with chilling.
There because I'm waking up in six hours.
Yeah. I mean, you can sleep on the
ride there. Yeah, you can take, you can take
a little nappy nap, do. You want to talk about the last
panel and then we can wrap up. Yeah.
So after going to the expositionhall, no entertainment, hall
(01:09:24):
entertainment. And then we realized we had to
go to the exhibit hall. We did that.
We went there and then we went to we, we watched something new.
A real world premiere. Real I I I got to look and see
when this actually premieres because I think this comes out
in a couple months. It's called Let's Play.
(01:09:47):
Yeah. And so you had this was
something that you wanted to do.Yes, I've read Let's Play.
I've seen I've seen it get posted in the manga channel or
manga in comics in the discord server of the what do you say
anime discord server. Plug.
Yeah, Thank you. Yeah.
So this drops in October, so we're three months ahead.
(01:10:09):
Yeah, you said before this there's like one PV that was
out. Yes, so we saw what the official
second PV and the first episode.Yeah, and they showed the first
episode. Yeah, Pete, you gave your
thoughts on it in a in a separate video.
I will also leave my thoughts here, but you can go first.
Yeah. I'll be quick though, yeah.
(01:10:30):
It was, I think visually it was very standard it.
Was bad I'm. I'm not trying to say it was, I
was. Especially because this is OLM.
So this is Apothecary Diaries. Yeah, and I know they have
multiple studios and they have different teams, but it looks
pretty bad for all of them. Yeah, the the director, he he's
(01:10:52):
the guy that does Pokémon, right?
That's what he was saying earlier.
I think I. Think he's a.
Yeah, either directs it or he just works on Pokémon and like,
yeah, all of them. Does Pokémon, so that makes
sense. Yeah.
And so like, yeah, Pokémon's Pokémon, they're known for their
games nowadays. But like, Pokémon can still go
off at times when it gets serious, like in the World
(01:11:13):
Championships or whatever, you know, like they'll go off.
And so yeah, I was kind of expecting something like that.
But yeah, first impressions, which I thought was weird
because they open it with like the setting is in the the
fantasy world of the game. Yep, it's like a MMO.
(01:11:34):
They're like rating. And usually in those settings,
like if the show is a slice of life, like Kobayashi, for
example, when they switch it up and it's the Dragon's fighting,
or in Yamada is like when it's in the game, when you have the
time to show your animation, like, all right, this is when we
(01:11:55):
ball out. This is how we catch people's
attention. They did it.
Yeah. It was weird.
Yeah. But then the moments that didn't
need to be animated, well, they were, yeah.
And it was just like it was all over the place.
Yeah. Yeah.
I was very confused by what I was watching sometimes.
I think the thing that I took away from it the most was I was
(01:12:19):
just like, Jesus, there are justso many.
This is just references. Yeah.
It's like, do you know this name?
Do you know this name? Do you recognize this?
But you're a gamer, and like an anime fan, you'll really like
like what they show to you. And I was like, OK, yeah, yeah.
That that dude's name is Link. There is no that dude's name.
That dog's name is Bowser. Bowser.
(01:12:40):
Martial law from Tech. Martial law, you know, and like
you could, like you could see the the passion and before,
yeah, before they showed the episode, they had AQ and a that
had the the creator of the of the webtoon, like all the
directors, the producers and everything.
And what I thought was really cool is that when the director
(01:13:02):
was talking about or not the director, the creator was
talking about it. You could just tell how
passionate she was. And this was her baby.
Yeah, yeah, because the creator has gone through sometimes I
think the after one of the seasons, it was like a two or
three-year break in between. And I think it was like more of
like I think it was more along the lines of like fine crafting
(01:13:23):
that her craft type of thing. Not actually like needing A2
year break, but like I'm a little scared because like she
you could tell how passionate she was.
Like she started crying in the panel.
How like how happy she was that this was getting an anime.
And then I watched the anime. I'm like, I hope the things that
people are going to say to you don't make you cry because this
(01:13:47):
is like, this is a huge web tune.
Like Let's Play is a huge web tune.
It's like it's not Laura Olympus, but like it's it's
pretty freaking massive, especially in Western audiences,
especially America. Yeah, Let's Play is humongous.
So I'm hoping it gets because like outside the animation, I
thought the voice acting was great, the comedy was really
(01:14:09):
funny. The pacing was super fast, like
really, really fast, like crazy fast.
How fast that pass pacing was. But it was I because I'm a
Homer, so I'm biased obviously because I read it.
But it's like, I think it's OK. I think it's I think it's fine.
(01:14:31):
I think there's some things thatpeople are going to find a lot
they like a lot. Like the references are like
really, it's just like a really fun watch, but it looks really
bad to look at like I, I don't know, like the anime looks like
it was made in 2006. Yeah.
It looks it looks pretty, but HD.
But yeah, it's like HD paint. It's like.
(01:14:55):
Yeah. Yeah, crop something on your
phone. It's like increased resolution.
That's what this, it was like Ms. Paint and they said do you
want to increase the resolution? They said sure.
And it's like you still made this in paint.
It's like it doesn't matter how good it looks.
Yeah, I, I, it, for me, it was like if someone put it on and
like I could catch some chuckles, I could get some
(01:15:16):
laughs out of it. I don't know if that was
compelling enough. I think that's a show,
especially because it takes place in LA and it has a lot of
they talked about it in the panel.
There's a lot of like Western things with this anime.
I think this is a show I would probably want to watch a dubbed
Yeah, just because I think that they could use like better like
(01:15:38):
terminology, especially if it's like LA based, you could use
like West Coast lingo and stuff.I think it would be really good.
But they use like, I don't know,it's fun like seeing like gamer
terms that they use and stuff like that.
I think they, I forgot whether they use like skill capped or
something like that and like headshot and that's like, yeah,
OK, that's fine. Skill gamer words.
It was gamer word. I didn't want to say gamer
(01:15:59):
words. Yo was.
It yo, was it 18 plus? Yeah, good, good gamer words.
Healthy. Encouraging.
Gamer words. Gamers like, not Fortnite
players. Would you?
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah, so that was I'm glad I sawI was a little disappointed by
like the quality just because ifanything, go out on the first
(01:16:24):
episode, especially if you're debuting at AX like ball out on
your first episode and then yoursecond episode can be shit.
I just thought the first, it makes me scared for like what's
to come later because it's like a lot of times how anime studios
do it. I should say it all, but like a
lot of studios, like the first episode is normally production
(01:16:44):
wise the best. So if that is the best
production wise episode we're all getting from Let's Play,
it's going to be a bumpy ass Rd.So I'm a little nervous, but it
sounds like they've been workingon this for like 3 years.
So it's a positive. I I hope it's a positive, but
we'll see. It was, it was, it was cool to
see like a world premiere or something like that, especially
(01:17:05):
since I've been reading it so. Yeah the last thing I'll like
kind of mention on it is that soyeah So I I thought because at
all that Anime Expo, all these big major conventions where they
have like reveals like or they do like the first episode
screening, it's usually like they show it in person it
(01:17:28):
whatever time the block is and then the episode goes on
Crunchyroll like later that night or the next day or
something like that it's like you get to watch it a whole day
early yeah big yeah yeah So I thought cuz in the beginning
you. Thought it was this season.
Yeah, I thought it was like gonna air this week or whatever,
and one of the things they mentioned is like, hey, we're
(01:17:50):
trying out a new style or we're doing something different.
See, let us know if you like it and we'll go for Episode 2.
I was like, what the fuck? They're going to change it in a
week. They kept referring to the art
style that they had as like Tokyo pop or Japan Pop or Tokyo
Pop or whatever. And like, it was like a retro
feel. And that's what you're saying.
And I think that was like a bullshit way of saying like,
(01:18:13):
this is just low quality like that.
I they kept trying to like emphasize that this was an art
style. I'm like, I don't think it is.
And even if it was, you're not appealing to your customers.
Like straight out it, it felt like it, like a beta.
Miles. Miles might disagree.
Maybe we should show him. Miles is like.
(01:18:33):
Miles Miles is confused why people care about animation in
anime. Like he's generally confused why
people care. And he's just catching straight
for no reason. Well, I was saying he, he, we,
we talk about this all the time, but Miles legit does not think
anime matter or animation matters in anime.
And I'm just like you. That's that's a hot.
(01:18:54):
Thing it's fine if you think that, but 99% of anime watchers
care. So because like we're, I don't
know, you want to what you're watching, you want to look good.
Like I I agree that animation islike the seventh most important
thing to an anime, but it's still important.
Also to be fair, like a lot of people, when they say they watch
(01:19:15):
anime, they mean what we're doing right now, which is
literally just having in the background.
I. And for that, the visuals are
literally the only thing. That I'm so happy that I was in.
We were in line and I said my hot take that people who like
anime don't actually watch anime.
And like the guy looked at me, he's like, that's true.
I'm like. You know, there was some, there
was some cool people that we met, the guy with the Luffy hat.
(01:19:37):
Yeah. If you just talk to people,
they're. Well, I had a guy just like come
up to me, just give me a e-mail sticker, and I was like, okay,
cool. John's experiencing what a
social life is just. Like people are just I.
Literally went to Japan for a year.
You can be social in Japan. I was social in Japan.
I went out drinking with two dudes.
I have a. Translate for you.
(01:19:58):
You OK? That's irrelevant.
That's one less barrier for you then, because you don't have to
translate for. Someone else You should be more
social than me, but I was still able to go out in Osaka till
5:00 AM and it worked out. Oh geez, that's I wouldn't be
able to do that. It was it was 2 Swedish dudes.
They were sick. Those were a lot of fun.
Or they're they're they're from.Danish they're.
(01:20:19):
Danish. Yeah, yo, Shout Danny.
And I forgot the other guy. Cool, forgot the other guy that
you met as well, but you. Know no Danny.
No, no, I no like a couple hoursago.
Oh, you. Have to bring that up and by the
fact he was wearing a pink wig and I didn't recognize him but I
feel. When someone's in cosplay.
Yeah, you get a valid valid. It's hard to be like, hey, I
(01:20:43):
know you, but I don't, but I. Actually, do you think if I
asked him do you know who I am, he would have any?
Idea. Why would he know who you are
exactly? He's never interacted with you.
I've interacted with this. Person multiple times.
Well, hasn't he like, seen the podcast?
I don't know. Yeah, he has no idea.
Yeah. He knows of the podcast.
(01:21:05):
I don't know if he knows who youare.
You've been on the episode 2 years.
Like what do you mean who the fuck Get out of here.
OK, well, yeah, we're we should wrap up.
Yeah, we're we're at like a fullepisode recording length.
This is funny. Yeah, we got to link.
Up early tomorrow, yeah. So that yeah, that was a wrap up
on day one. Hopefully we'll be back Day 2.
(01:21:27):
We're. Not we're.
There's no way. There might be I'm planning on.
Getting it might be a lot sloppier.
For reference, tomorrow is the 4th of July.
We are going to. We are going to a rooftop party.
I've been there before and I gotsmoked and I'm planning on
getting smoked tomorrow. Maybe we just bring like the
portable mice and we just do it on the roof.
That would be so sick, but I feel like it's a lot of fucking
(01:21:49):
work so we'll figure it out. If worst case scenario if we
don't do it the night, we can maybe do it in the morning or
something like that and do a hangover stream.
That would be fun, but I guess people will have to find out
until the the second part of this series.
Whenever this gets whatever it fits in.
We figure it out. Maybe this is just for us, you
know. Edit it like we can probably.
(01:22:11):
Just like maybe cut, maybe cut the.
Beginning. Yeah.
And I'll not be your job, not ours.
I mean, I could do even I could do that.
That's really easy, yeah. Throw the overlay on and.
But yeah, let's let's wrap it upand go to bed.
On behalf of Johnny and Trent, Iam Pete.

be posted. But how it will be posted?
Hopefully you like Part 2 if there is a Part 2.
So yeah, thanks and we'll see you next time.
