This is a lot of flux.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
I'm Brett and I'm justin and it's Friday, the thirtieth
of day.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Wait, the latest inflation figures are in. The trimmed mean
inflation rate reach two point eight percent in the twelve
months to April. That's a jump from the two point
six percent in March. This is not the result the
Reserve Bank was looking for, so at this point experts
aren't exactly banking on a July rate card. Not what
we want to hear me, man Neil.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Three marvelous stories today, Jasey Boy, let's do it for
our first ASX listed where a travel group which owns
where Beds is soaring after seeing its bookings pop and
at share price pop even more, Where.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Beds living its best post breakup life be man, So
tell me more.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Well does it web Travel Group is the company that
operates the brand Webbeds.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
They are a travel wholesaler that sells hotel rooms to
travel agencies in bulk.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
And if Webeds sounds familiar to you, it's because it
used to be part of the webjet business.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
But in September last year, the Webbeds biers was booming
and Webjet was not really booming, so the two of
them consciously uncoupled.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yep, Webbeds demerged from Webjet and listed on the ASX
under that web Travel Group.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Lots of web going on bman, but now Webeds post
split glow up is real. Yep.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Webbeds has seen its total transaction volume jump more than
twenty percent to four point nine billion bucks for the
year to March thirty first, but the Man. Despite this,
Webeds still saw its profit down twenty two percent due
to a squeeze in their margin. But does it wait?
The Webbeds investors did not mind one iota with its
share price jumping fourteen percent.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Because in a travel sector full of bad news right now,
Webbeds kind of looked like a rockstar.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
So what is the key learning right here? When an
industry looks gloomy, A single company bucking the trend can
become the market's golden child see Jessey Boy. Investors love
a neat story, and when most companies in one particular
sector may be struggling, investors tend to assume that everyone's struggling.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
So when flight Center and Corporate Travel Management downgraded their
growth forecasts, investors assumed that would be the same for
the whole sector.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Expectations drop, valuations dip.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
And then boom where Bed steps up with a stronger
than expected bookings and growth and Juyboy.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Even though web Bed's net profit after tax dropped twenty
two percent, investors pretty much shrugged that.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
One off, because when you're the outlier in a struggling industries,
investors tend to reward you for it.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
For our second story, Hailey Bieber has sold her viral
beauty brand Road to Elf Beauty for one billion US
dollarydoes talk.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
About a billion dollar clove? B man? What is the
tea here?

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Okay? So Road was founded only a couple of years
ago in twenty twenty two by Hailey Biber aka Haley.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Baldwin aka Justin Bieber's wife and Stephen Baldwin's.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Daughter and Kendall Jenner's brunch Frandity and b Man.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Road has gone from generating ten million US dollars in
its first to one hundred million US dollars just two
years later.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Hailey baber leveraged her reputation and sixty six million social
media followers to create beauty trends.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
We're talking clean girl esthetic and doughnut glazed skin.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
We're talking eighteen dollar peptide lip treatments. They sold out
in seventy two hours after launching. But the men, tell
me more about ELF Beauty. Your favorite well, ELF, which
stands for Eyes, Lips and Face. Josey Woyan, you know it.
It's an American cosmetics brand that was founded in two
thousand and.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Four, and their main selling point up until now has
been affordable quality.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
But now a bit of a flip. ELF Beauty is
dropping one billion US dollars to buy Road as a
way into the luxury beauty market.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
And be Man. You'd think that people might skip the
eighteen dollar lip balm when they're struggling to pay for groceries.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
But the hype around Road and the growth in their
revenue says otherwise. All thanks to the lipstick effects. Oh yeah,
so what is the key learning here?

Speaker 2 (03:50):
The lipstick effect says that during economic hardship, people still
treat themselves, just in smaller way.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Some people even say it's an indication that a recession
is on the way.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
It makes sense when seems like it's falling apart. People
can't afford big purchases like a new house, like a
new car, like a luxury handbag, so they treat themselves
to the little luxuries instead, like an eighteen dollars lip balm. Exactly,
and b Man. This theory got popular in two thousand
and one because sales of LIPSTICKX grew significantly in the
US during the economic recession that followed the nine eleven attacks.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
Beauty companies were lining their pockets while people lined their lips.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Essay Lauder, which is a leader in the premium beauty space,
they saw an eleven percent increase in lipstick sales during
this time.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
It happened again in two thousand and eight during the
global financial crisis, so b Man, well, it.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Seemed counterintuitive to enter the premium beauty market. In twenty
twenty two, when post COVID inflation was at its peak.
Road actually launched its premium brand at just the right time.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
For our third and final story, in video, the AI
chip king has forecasted a massive quarter of growth despite
their slowdown in China.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Cannot stop and will not stop in video right now,
be man, so tell me more so dozy? Wait?

Speaker 1 (04:56):
We know the story of Nvidia started building graphics cards
for gamers back in the early nineties so that we
could play Mortal Kombat.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Now, be man, it absolutely dominates the global AI hardware market.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Get this one. Just two years ago and Vidio had
twenty seven billion US dollars in annual sales.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Now it's pushing towards two hundred billion US dollars, which
is a near eight times jump.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
And not even Haley Beaver's lip balm can move that fast.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
So man, you may remember that the US government banned
in Video from selling its best quality chips to China, and.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
That wiped out eight billion US dollars in potential revenue.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
But that news it was like water offer computer chips
back for video because it's forecasting seventy billion US dollars
in revenue for just this quarter.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Well, in Video is being squeezed out of China. Other
policy changers may actually help open up new markets like
the Middle East.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
And the man Despite other AI chips being developed, in
Video's first mover advantage has proven quite a benefit for them.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
So what is the key learning here?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
First mover advantage is the competitive edge that a company
gets by being the first major player in a new
or untapped market.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
While others were still focused on traditional CPU. Who's in
Vidia developed GPU based AI chips?

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Looking at you, Intel, an IBM behind the eight ball?

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Yes, now in Video owns around ninety percent of the
AI accelerated chip market and Josey Boy, that headstart means
in VideA can effectively set the standards in this industry.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
And also set pricing, which is at a premium.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
First mover advantage doesn't always have a lasting impact, though.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Hm, might I remind you of another company that gained
a huge market share but was not the first mover.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Yes, Google came to the search industry five years after
this concept was invented.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
But now it has around ninety percent market share in
search rip ask Jeeves. So while in Videas cemented its
dominance for now, you can bet your bottom dollar b Man,
there will be and are others chasing fluxam Is there
any better feeling than saving money on electricity? Internet and
make sure to download the Flex app and check out
the academy for the very last day today.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
