What is it that some people do to learn a language effectively that others don't? In this episode, I talk about what research says about the strategies that Good Language Learners (GLL) do that you may wish to incorporate into your own learning journey. Neil Naiman and other researchers give us 6 strategies that you can start including in your own learning: 1) Finding a learning style that suits you, 2) Involving yourself in the language learning process, 3) Developing an awareness of language both as system and as communication, 4) Paying constant attention to expanding your language knowledge, 5) Developing the second language as a separate system, and 6) Considering the demands that English learning imposes.
I also speak about how other experts classify these strategies in a broader sense: Metacognitive, Cognitive, and Social strategies. And I also give other practical ideas on how these strategies can be applied in your day to day life. Finally, I mention how the questionnaires developed by Rebecca Oxford can help you start to become aware of how you learn. You can find her book here if you wish to dig deeper and take control of your own learning.
This is the penultimate episode before I take a well-deserved break until I come back next year. Remember that if you wish to keep in contact, you can do so by following my Facebook page, my website, or by email at podcast@languageteaching.es.

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist
It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
