the UN-ghost REVEALED

In the Season 9 Premiere, “The UN-ghost REVEALED” I return from ghosting the podcast since last year! I’m back and older than before! Various topics, no theme, chaotic dishevelment, dishevelry.

Flowing

The doctor gave me flonase, and it kind of works.

I’m glad that you found new podcasts, or something else to do, but I’m more glad to be back.

Message from Mom

Hi John, I too can write poetry. This came to me as I was going to bed:

I swallowed the last of my wine and went into the bedroom, looking for my water bottle. As I went to my nightstand, I put the water bottle on it, which I had been carrying under my arm. I thought to myself “hearing aids don’t save everything.”
Haha.

Savage Tune

Banshee’s “Savage Man” was a song I enjoyed in 2024. Originally out in 2020, it was new to me. Kind of lo-fi metal.

Marlon Mullen (b. 1963) uses art publications and other print material as points of departure for his paintings, generating radical reimaginings of these sources in which text and image are transformed through his dynamic color and composition.

Yo. Check. Check. Check. This is the thing.
You are tuned into the number one. What's
the matter with me podcast
on the West Coast.
The only
what's the matter with me podcasts on the
West Coast.
On the South Coast, Northeast,

(00:36):
West and inwards,
outwards
coast.
Number one podcast.
What's the matter with me?
My name is John. I'm 45
years old. Dear God. Husband and father of
two small business and a radio DJ podcaster.
I have multiple sclerosis

(00:56):
and
trigeminal
neuralgia.
I made this podcast to share what I'm
going through. What's the matter with me is
an MS podcast also about other things. I'm
not a medical professional,
and you should not take this for medical
advice. If you need medical advice, ask your

(01:17):
health care provider.
Recap. Recap. I ghosted.
I went
to Minnesota.
No. I went to what did Montana
last year,
and I it was like a lot of
things happened.
And
they had a,

(01:37):
like, created such a thing. I ghosted the
whole last year.
I deeply apologize. Catholic
thing. I am not worthy
of anything, really.
And yet,
back on the What's the Matter with Me
podcast.
Okay. Let's try and clear this up. I
went

(01:58):
to
Montana
last year,
and I brought the wheelchair I had at
this time. They said it was a travel
wheelchair that it could fly. I got to
the Alaska Airlines
desk,
and they were like, this is a lithium
ion battery. You have to be able to

(02:19):
remove it. You can't take it on the
plane.
So I got to the airport. They're like,
you can't bring your wheelchair.
That was like, what do we do? Because
at that time, I was on so much
pills.
Dude, it was such a bummer. They're, like,
you can't bring your wheelchair.
At that time, I could barely walk my

(02:41):
I I'm I'm still learning how to walk
again. I was in my wheelchair
so much last year.
A lot of the time I wasn't making
this podcast, I was kind of dealing with
that. I had all these health problems.
I had all these problems
with my brace. I had I got an

(03:03):
infection
in my leg,
and
it had to do with that I was
in my brace all the time because
I had
to go on vacation and get around without
my wheelchair. I had this push wheelchair,
but that had it needed someone to push
me. And it so it was a horrible

(03:25):
vacation,
really. Like, if you can imagine going on
vacation
and being told
you have to be in the you have
to find a push wheelchair.
I got it from the the hotel we
were staying at. It was one of these,
like,
weekend suite
kind of places

(03:46):
in Montana
near the airport,
and they let us borrow a wheelchair, like
a push wheelchair.
And we used it the whole week we
were in Montana. We went on all these
sightseeing
drives,
luckily. So it's like you sat in the
car. So I I was up for that.

(04:07):
But having my brace on for all the
so many hours a day, it, like, had
weird side effects. It cracked my anyway, it
they cracked my what do you call it?
My, like, callus on the bottom of my
foot
cracked. So, like, it was super painful to
walk, and I couldn't even really walk that

(04:29):
well anyway. I got I somehow I got
this infection
in my ankle,
and then my brace would push on that.
I just got that dealt with, like, in
December.
Anyway, as you can, like, hear, I've had,
like, endless
nonstop
drama,
and and, like, last year was really hard

(04:52):
for me. I cracked with the bottom of
my foot. I had a infection
for months in my leg, and
it's I got antibiotics
in December. I finally
convinced
the dermatologist.
I was like, this is really painful.
And so I got it working. So I

(05:12):
kinda, like, didn't have a lot to report
because when your health goes bad, you kinda
have to do just that. And
I I couldn't walk, like, a step without
searing
pain in my ankle, my whole weight pushing
on this infection
in my ankle, and it was killing me.

(05:35):
And then we had the whole election
thing that was all like,
who likes that? People like it. Good for
them. I think this is a really unfocused
start to season nine. So I think I
have some notes in here.
So shout out to the Canadian

(05:57):
listeners,
especially
long running ones
from Edmonton, like Sean Windgrave.
Shout outs to the Edmonton
Oilers.
I watched that four nations
face
off yesterday.
Canada won it in overtime,
and that was good hockey. I think everyone

(06:18):
liked that. I know the Canadians
love to see the Canadian hockey team
defeat The US. It has kind of a
feeling when you're watching the Canadians.
It's like watching the Yankees.
You're like, they're gonna win.
Yeah. Like, Ida, tough. Here's a note,
driving all morning

(06:41):
just to make the physical therapy appointment and
then I missed it. Shower that was to
Nathan Butters and Tibby and Mary. They sent
me a card. The guy who roasts
mailboxes.
I saw this and probably
you should
see that.

(07:01):
If I if I search
roast
mailboxes,
I get an AI overview that's like, if
you're asking about the act of damaging or
destroying
mailboxes,
it's illegal.
Here's some info. No. Mailbox roasting comedy on
TikTok.

(07:21):
Check it out. The guy roasts mailboxes.
It's a good laugh. I'm in mailbox, but
I also
accept
half empty beer cans. I bet you do.
So this guy's roasting mailboxes.
Check it out, the guy who roasts mailboxes.
It's really dumb.
And that's, you know, it's kinda

(07:44):
El Universo.
Check out El Universo.
It was a band. I mean, check out
El Universo.
It's also Spanish. I'm like, check out the
universe.
El Universo
band.
Avant Kraut Garden. This is like a a
band from Guadalajara.

(08:05):
And it's like, Droney Krautrock.
Recommended.
It's on Bandcamp.
El Universo.
I got subscribed
Flonase,
and
that that,
I realized I'm allergic to something. I had
something, like, stuck. Have you ever, like, sneezed
and you get, like, a map of your

(08:27):
sinuses
comes out solid in your
palm?
That happened to me. It was within in
the shower. I was like, two. And I
was like, woah. So I had something up
my nose. It all came out.
I'm glad. Yeah. I'm gonna assume that you
found new stuff to listen to last year,
and I I hope that worked out for

(08:49):
you. I got this message. I have to
give a shout out to everyone. To Rocky,
especially to mom, and
just every person who listens
to What's the Matter with Me. A lot
of them were like, you know, it's not
okay.
Jersey girl was like, you can't just
ghost us like that. So here it is.

(09:10):
Here's the un ghosting, the unreveal.
I'm alive. Season nine is happening. It's mostly
the same.
My kids are at my mom's house. Here's
a message from my mom when I stopped,
recording.
A lot of people messaged me and
mom sent me one and I think, remember

(09:32):
I was writing a lot of poetry
last year.
And she said, hi John. I too can
write poetry. This came to me as I
was going
to bed. I swallowed the last of my
wine
and went into the bedroom
looking for my water bottle. As I went
to my nightstand,

(09:53):
I put the water bottle on it, which
I've been carrying under my arm. I thought
to myself,
hearing aids don't save everything.
So I guess that's like a prose poem.
Pretty good, mom.
I got another hot band,
jam.
Just something I heard on the radio last

(10:16):
year. The band is called Banshee,
and the tune the tune is Savage Man
from their second LP, Living in the Jungle.
A 2020
Banshee.
Savage Man. It's like heavy metal. Yeah. Having
a listen to it, it's pretty good though.

(10:36):
Banshee,
I think you'll have a black savage kind
of metal time with Banshee.
Check it out. A lot of stuff happened
for disabled artists.
So through April 20,
so there's still some time to check it
out at MoMA
on the First Floor,

(10:57):
the work of Marlon Mullen.
Forty years, he's been based at the NIAID
Art Center in Richmond.
He kinda starts with a publication
and then makes a painting.
Check it out. Marlon Mullen at SFMOMA,
self taught disabled artist from the NIAID Art

(11:17):
Center
in Richmond.
See some art. Get out there. Till April
20. I went to the
the listener
appreciation
party,
the sixty fifth anniversary
listener
appreciation party for KFJC,
and it was cool. I was there in

(11:38):
my wheelchair that, yeah, they didn't let me
take on the plane, but I could still
take it in my car. So I went
to KFJC,
and then there was another DJ,
a fan of the station at the listener
appreciation party in the wheelchair.
So I got to be there and be
next to him, and just be like, we

(12:00):
are part we're in wheelchairs. So it was
cool to show up and be there. I
have another note here called, Chivalade.
So there's this pretty great New York Italian,
Pasquale
Caputo.
He has words of advice, everything cholesterol.

(12:21):
When his cholesterol
gets to 800,
he's selling. Chivalad.
Check it out. New York Italian chivalad is
a stuffed,
a stuffed
sausage
from Italy, and it has a really high
cholesterol.
That's all I got to share.
So don't eat it if you're trying to

(12:41):
avoid that, I guess. It's What's the Matter
with Me podcast season nine. We're back and
doing something.
So that's like a year's worth of goo.
I'm sorry I ghosted,
but I've un ghosted. I'm no longer ghost
in the flesh. I am the human.

(13:02):
John, you're listening to the What's the Matter
with me podcast.
Thanks for tuning in. I'll catch you next
time. You can learn everything about the what's
the matter with me podcast
at what'sthematterwithme.0rg.
Peace. Keep in touch. Don't ever change.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
