When I think of Charles Brubaker, I immediately think of some of the old Terrytoons styles of cartoons, namely Tom Terrific, as well as a combination of works from Jay Ward Productions (60's Rocky and Bullwinkle fame), Total Television (60's Underdog fame) and an added sprinkling of Harveytoons and UPA styles thrown in for good measure. Charles has his hands in many facets of cartoons, including webcomics, traditional comics, magazines, storyboards, and more recently,…. independent animation.
Born in Nagasaki Japan, Charles was exposed to a myriad of cartoons and styles and those influences are evident as they seem to seep through the ink from his pen to paper (or digital screen depending on his application on a given day). His sparkling wit and affinity for a "loose" design style make for a fun read and enjoyable experience at every turn of the comic page.
I caught up with Brubaker from his home studio in Martin, Tennessee, and talked with him about his many projects from “Ask a Cat,” “The Funny Princess” “A Witch named Koko” to his recently released animated works.
I dug a little deeper too since EVERYONE has a story,….and here is Charles Brubaker’s.

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist
It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
