It sounds like hi-anus, maybeit's a guy named Yanis and
(00:51):
you're like hi, Yanis, Okay, hiatus, it's not anus.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Oh, it's hiatus.

Welcome to Whiskey
Bits with.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Matt and Phil, where
we sip on everyday whiskeys and
find the funny in our everydaylives.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Are you ready to try
something?
I'm ready.
Okay, are you ready?
Speaker 2 (01:49):
though New season new
.
Lou, are you ready?
I'm ready.
I don't know what are we in for.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
I'm just going to.
I want you to smell.
It Smells good, Doesn't itsmell good?
It really does.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
So we typically have
been doing $50 or less.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Typically.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Like easy to find.
For the start of season two, Iwanted to kind of buck the trend
.
Let's buck it, as they say, andwhat we're going to try today
is this is an MGP product, sothis one comes to us from
Indiana.
Oh, thank you, indiana.
This is from Indiana.
My son, mgp oh, my son, my son.
(02:31):
This is the New Lou doubletoasted bourbon whiskey,
finished with toasted French oakstaves.
What is a stave?
That's the part of the whiskeybarrel.
Oh the wood.
Why did I just say French oakwood?
Well, it's the strips of woodthat make up the barrel.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Oh, can you
intersperse different types of
wood in a barrel?
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Well, you could Ooh,
that'd be interesting.
Or you could just drop thetoasted French oak staves into a
barrel.
Oh, is that what they do?
That's what they do.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
So it's floating wood
inside of a barrel.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Correct, okay, so,
yeah.
So double toasted, wow.
So a toasted barrel a littlebit different than the typical
charred barrel, right?
So a charred barrel like weknow about bourbon has to go
into an oak charred oak barrel.
A charred barrel like we knowabout bourbon has to go into an
oak charred oak oak barrel rightnew one the toasted process.
What the toasted process is isthey heat up the wood first,
(03:35):
okay, and then they fire it toget it charred, but by toasting
it it starts to sort of bringout some of the flavor profiles
that you can get is it into thelighter than charring, like is
it less time or something?
Speaker 2 (03:51):
it's less time.
Okay, it's way less time.
So in marshmallow terms, we'retalking charred barrel.
Is you let the marshmallow goon fire?
Speaker 1 (03:59):
it's on fire and it's
black at the end of it and
you're like wow this is good andcrunchy right.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Uh, toasted is.
You take five hours.
And you're like, wow, this isgood and crunchy right.
Uh, toasted is you take fivehours.
And you're like, oh, I'm amarshmallow connoisseur.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
And you sit there
like a moron toasting it until
it's perfectly brown yeah, okay, kind of yeah, well, except that
what you're doing is you'reyou're actually going really
high heat for a short amount oftime just to well, because it's
warm it.
Yeah, exactly, and then youfire it to bring it to whatever
(04:30):
char is.
The most common charring levelfor bourbon is right around
three, between two and threemakes sense because I know what
those numbers mean in regards tochar level okay, so if you
think of so, the four is thehighest char level.
I don't know what that is.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
That's why I'm
explaining.
Oh okay, good, that's whathappened here.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
The highest level of
char is four and they call that
the alligator char because itlooks like alligator skin.
Okay, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, andthen just think about it a
little bit less than that wouldbe a three and then a one like a
chameleon, more like achameleon.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Right, they really
should put.
They should put other animalskins to it, because I feel like
, like snake skin, probablywould be right below alligator
char because it's not as bumpybut it still has those like
little lines, you know okaysnake char snake char.
Okay, and then below that maybetrout, trout char, trout char
okay, and then below.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
That would be char,
which is an also another type of
fish oh, it could be char, char, char, and then below that
would be tar, tar, tar, tar, char, tar tar just flat like tar
right.
And then there's.
Then there's toasted char, toasted char, all right.
(05:45):
So the double toasted allowsthe bourbon to interact with the
wood a little bit more andthere's quite a bit more flavor.
Spending a little more timetogether, are they?
So this is aged for five years, but when you look at this, this
does not look like afive-year-old.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
This looks like a
500-year.
This looks like a lot older, right Dark yeah Now, is that
because of the double toastingBecause of the toast.
Or is it just toasted ingeneral is darker.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Toasted in general is
darker because it interacts
more with the wood.
It starts.
It starts the process to kindof release some of those flavors
that are in the wood.
So this is 58.3%, 116 proof.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
This is a single
barrel.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
I picked this one up
at the Antioch Fine Wine and
Liquor in Antioch Illinois.
Good, I have tried this over atWhiskey Bungalow.
Oh yeah, Shout out.
Maybe from a little privateselection.
But I finally found my own fora private selection, so we're
going to get into this onetonight.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
To season two.
To season two.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Ba-bam Cheers.
It's just so good, dog, it'sjust so it's really good I
haven't had.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
I haven't had a glass
of whiskey in maybe six, eight
weeks well, yes, definitely thatlong we recorded an episode
maybe no like two weeks yeah andso this is just pleasantly.
Yeah, do you hitting thepalette where?
Speaker 1 (07:19):
where are you at with
the palette?
Speaker 2 (07:21):
uh, I'm gonna have to
do it again, okay there's,
there's.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
It's very, very sweet
, because the first thing I was
gonna say is such a sweetness toit, but it's not like, uh, it's
.
It's not an obnoxious sweetthat you get from overly corn,
like anything with corn husk.
Yeah, it's more of like a richvanilla caramel butterscotch.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Yeah, butterscotch is
a good one, rich, caramel deep
caramel for sure.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
And then you do get
the oak, like the oaky burn that
you can get sometimes with thewhiskey, but that's a little bit
later on the finish and themouthfeel is just so smooth and
silky, yeah rich, sweet, smooth, silky, caramel vanilla.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
I'm getting way more,
like you've said, vanilla a lot
in a lot of these and I've beenlike I can kind of see.
But this one I'm getting like, yes, a lot of.
I'm getting way more, likeyou've said, vanilla a lot in a
lot of these and I've been likeI can kind of see, but this one
I'm getting like, yes, likevanilla for sure, not vanilla
bean as much as just like almostthat like kind of the vanilla
extract.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
You know what I mean,
Like the oil, yeah something.
It's just that deep richvanilla flavor.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Yeah, well, they say
that the toasting, like one of
the first flavors it brings out,is vanilla, vanilla.
Yeah, so that that does make.
It does make a lot of sense.
So good, isn't it?
Speaker 2 (08:46):
tasty and I do like
how it feel, isn't gonna sound
weird how it feels yeah, themouth feels nice.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Hey, it's a thing
we've got to be mature, but yes
it's.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
We're talking about
whiskey people, um, but no, I do
, I like it's, it's not.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
It doesn't kill me
going down, I don't know I
haven't been in front of acamera in so long, so I was just
like what do I do?
Speaker 2 (09:08):
what do I do with my
hands?
Uh, not that.
I just looked at all threecameras dead in the eye so I was
watching on youtube.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
We're gonna be like
why are you just looking?
Is he looking?
Speaker 2 (09:19):
at every camera.
Oh man, but yeah, no, it.
It it sets.
Well, it doesn't.
It's not a.
Some drinks are just hard todrink.
You know, we were at whiskeybungalow uh last week or
whatever two weeks ago.
Yeah, um, there were that it.
It had that kind of bitteraftertaste.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
This doesn't do that,
oh yeah, the, the tasting that,
whichever one.
Yeah, what we were doing.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
This is like, yeah,
that it feels it kind of like
keeps the same flavor profileeven throughout.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Yeah yeah, it's very
nice.
I love it.
I love it.
I've seen these a lot.
The new loo the new loo isfairly common.
You can find the new Lou.
You can often find the new Loutoasted.
It's right around 50, 60 bucks.
The new Lou's themselvesbetween 30 and 45.
They do have a weededexpression.
They've got a bourbonexpression.
(10:10):
I'm not sure that I've seen arye.
It's a really really good brand, the really good stuff.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
It's the first time
we've tried it on the show.
I'm pretty sure Right, it's thefirst time we've tried it.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
And I've kind of been
holding out for this double
toasted since the first time Isaw it.
Tried it.
Um, this one comes in around 70bucks.
So, and again this is a barrelpick, so you have to go
fantastic go find it, but if youdo see it, grab it.
I I don't think you'll bedisappointed.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
No, it's really good,
I almost get a little bit of
like, I'm gonna say, cremebrulee, but like that burnt,
burnt sugar, burnt sugar on thetop, and it, yeah, almost
reminds me of either that cremebrulee or like banana, almost
like like a banana foster?
(10:57):
Yeah, not as strong as theother one that we tried that one
time.
That was really banana's foster, but it has a little bit of
that.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Really good.
Okay so what have you been upto, Dude?
I've been up to so much.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Well, tell me about
it.
I don't even know where tostart.
I wouldn't.
Let's just end the podcast here.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Let's just be done is
be done no, uh, you know, I
mean I think the last time wechatted we were talking about
our new work and new jobs, andso I've been just video editing
like a mofo, um and just doing aton of that and um, yeah, I did
my.
So like the first month of theyear was just filled with comedy
(11:41):
shows, yeah, which was awesome, like every weekend I had.
I had two shows every weekendin the month of January, which
was really cool.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
And I've been doing a
lot of just getting inspired
and doing a lot of stuffcreatively.
That has been really fun.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Well, tell me about
something that's been inspiring
you.
I want to hear the jokes thatyou're writing.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Well, honestly, I've
been coming up with a lot of
sketches, okay, like sketchcomedy stuff.
I've been watching, I don'tknow, I watched the Saturday
Night live documentary and it'slike four episodes and then I
watched before that I watchedthe movie it's called Saturday
night Loved it.
It was so good and I really waslike wow, like Lorne Michaels,
(12:31):
like you know.
I don't know how true all ofthat is, but I think for the
most part it's relatively true.
Okay, don't know how true allof that is, but I think for the
most part it's relatively true.
Okay, but just like remindingme again of, like, what I love
about the behind the scenes ofshow business and like the work
that it takes and the you knownot the glamour stuff, but it's
like putting the scriptstogether and working with the
actors and like getting a showtogether and specifically for
(12:54):
what he was doing, like just allthe stuff he had to go through
and the things that were goingwrong and all the obstacles.
But it's just that chaos.
I mean the whole the movieSaturday Night, like it's just
pure chaos.
Yeah, like, because it's allabout the first, the very first
Saturday Night Live show.
Okay, season one, episode one,and how it almost didn't come
(13:15):
together at all.
And so I just was like and howit almost didn't come together
at all, and so I just was likeit reminded me of how much I
love live performance and howmuch I love sketch comedy.
And so then I just like startedcause you know me, if I get into
something I get like obsessed.
So I started immersing myselfin like all the different
documentaries and I was watchinglike the one episode on
(13:35):
auditions and I was like that isone of my dreams is like I want
to audition for snl someday.
But like half the 90 of thebattle is getting the audition.
Like sure, it's almost likevery, it's very rare that you
even get the audition.
So anyway, so that's been kindof cool.
But I've been coming up withall these like sketch comedy
(13:56):
ideas.
So I think one of the thingswhile I'm doing the stand up and
working with my booking managerto get shows this year, I've
been keeping track of like howmany I've been doing, but like I
also want to start maybewriting and producing some
sketch comedy stuff to kind ofjust put that out there and sure
, yeah, so yeah, I think I'mgonna try to get another dry bar
(14:18):
special, hopefully this fall.
Um, so that's kind of in theworks.
Yeah, we'll see what happens.
Another trip to utah, yeah,dude.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Oh, same house,
different house, I don't know I
don't know, maybe there'll be areprisal of the Huber, that's
right, the human Uber.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
You just dragged me
on stage and sort of threw me
out.
I'm not carrying you again, that's it.
That'd be funny.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
It would be funny.
Actually, this is where.
This is probably where, becauseremember, when we first got
started with this, you weretrying to come up with a persona
.
Oh yeah, and you said thepersona that I want is I want to
enter a stage a different wayevery single time.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
I just did not do
that at all.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
No, no, you did it
one time and that was it.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
I did it a couple
times back when I was doing the
theater show at the WoodstockOpera House.
Oh, okay, so I did one where Ijust walked on, I looked at the
audience and then kept walking.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
And then I just
walked, but yeah, yeah, and I
did one where I just clearlyjust I didn't even acknowledge
him, I just walked straightacross.
Yes, that's good.
Well, and then you also did one, didn't you do?
You did one at the uh, the oldfolks home, that didn't you like
?
Come on and just start singing, yes, so that's a little bit
different, that's right, I'vebeen doing a lot of shows for
old folks.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
I I've discovered,
you know, here's the thing.
So I had one of the gigs that Igot.
They're not all like Wow, butto me any show is great that you
get paid for.
So this one was at an old folkshome.
I got to the second one I gotsick and I was like let's not
(15:55):
kill any old people today.
So I had to back out of thatone.
Maybe tomorrow, yeah, maybetomorrow when I'm feeling better
.
But the first one was at thisold folks.
It was not not a retirementfacility, but it was kind of
like there's some nursing, someretirement, it was assisted
living, yeah, that's rightassisted and you know, and I
(16:18):
just kind of knew, like thedemographic of the people
obviously that are going to bethere.
So I grew up super close with mygrandpa, um, and I really, you
know, I love frank sinatra, Ilove dean martin, ben crosby,
all the old-fashioned stuff, thecrooners and yeah and so I was
like I don't know what it justpopped in my head.
Maybe god was like here you go,like here's an idea.
(16:38):
Because I was like, you know, these, these people are like
used to a certain type of comedythey're used to growing up with
, you know, certain entertainerslike Johnny Carson oh gosh, all
the, just tons of differentpeople and then music wise
they're, you know, probably likeused to a lot of that crooners
(16:59):
stuff, the Rat Pack.
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Little Elvis.
Yeah, and so I was like I waslike you know what I should do?
I should Bing Crosby, BingCrosby.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
I was like I was like
you know what I should do I
should bing crosby, bing crosbyum.
I was like I should danny k,danny k.
Well, and I kind of wanted to.
I was like I want to do like alate night show, like a johnny
carson, basically like wherethere's a little variety.
So I was like, well, what if Isang a song at the beginning,
yeah, and, and then did my jokes, you know, and uh, just to kind
(17:29):
of give them a little extra,because I'm like I don't know
how often they're getting outand what they do, and so I'm
like, at the very least, I'mgoing to give them a good show.
It's in, like it was in liketheir lounge kitchen lounge area
.
It was not fancy at all, yeah, but I wore a suit.
I attempted to bring audioequipment that completely failed
, so it was just me just upthere with no mic, just, but it
(17:53):
was, you know, a small space, yeah, and uh, but I did get my
phone speaker connected to a jblspeaker that somebody had and
so I was able to play, um, thekaraoke version of fly me to the
moon, okay, and I sang to itand then I invited them to say
it was really cool.
It was really cool and uh, theyall had a blast, they had a
(18:14):
great time and, like this onelady came up to me and had me
sign her, her, her package of uh, it wasn't, it wasn't whoppers,
it was snow caps, which Ithought was so funny.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
And uh, she's like I
also got like uh, good and
plenty, no, she's, yeah, I alsohave those.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Can you sign those?
She's kept pulling out candy.
I'm like I'm not, like I don'twork for the candy company.
Do you work for the candycompany?
Hey, you look like this guy inthe lemon heads box.
Yeah, can you sign that becauseyou're bald?
No, she was like I got jimgaffigan, so I need yours.
I was like I'm glad that youthink that I should be up there
with that guy.
(18:54):
But, um, but yeah, it was justreally fun and I feel like I
love that crowd.
Yeah, they're kind of my people.
So, uh, I was like you knowwhat?
Uh, most people probably lookat it at a show like that.
I don't necessarily say that, but some people might look at it
, go oh, it's not a club or it'snot a theater or whatever.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Like oh, my god, you
know, but I'm like no, like
that's, that was so fun yeah itwas awesome yeah, did I ever
tell you about the time that, um, my punk band played for the
group of second graders?
No, so you.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
So you did the
opposite At my old grade school.
Were you also a second graderat this time?
Speaker 1 (19:31):
No, no, I was in high
school, okay, and I don't know
how we got hooked up with this, but we were asked to go in and
play a few songs, and so we did.
We went and played a few songs.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
For second graders.
Yeah, at my old grade school.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
It's like for indie.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Yeah, what did you
play?
Like the Wiggles.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
No, we played punk
rock.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
Like the explicit
version.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
No.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Oh, okay.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
No, that's awesome.
We were a I guess you could saylike we were a Christian punk
rock band.
So ska no, oh, okay, like punkrock band.
So ska no, like punk.
Actually punk rock no becausewe didn't have any horn.
We didn't have a horn section,so we were playing.
We couldn't be Tabasco, becausethat's copyrighted Tabasco
(20:20):
sauce, right, so you couldn't beTabasco, but that's what we
wanted to be, so instead wenamed ourselves Pepper Sauce.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
Oh, I got it.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
I was like where is
this going?
Yeah, so you're pepper sauce.
That was the name of the band?
Speaker 2 (20:37):
yeah, and it was.
Uh, it was me and a coupleother guys.
Dude, that's awesome.
Were any of these guys from thewell-known band named chevelle?
No, or related to anybody inthe well-known band named
chevelle that you grew up withand you won't introduce me to,
and I'm still upset about it.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
No, nope, okay, none
of them.
None of them.
They wouldn't lower themselvesto play for a bunch of second
graders at Woodview ElementarySchool in Grayslake, maybe they
would.
No chance, no chance.
So that's the closest that Ican relate to that no chance.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
So that's the closest
that I can relate to that.
So you're saying is the closestyou can relate to entertaining
old people is entertainingextremely young people.
Got it Okay, all right.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
But I was in high
school.
We took whatever chance wecould get.
Did you ever do Battle of theBands?
Never, we were never that good.
Are you kidding?
Speaker 2 (21:28):
My band sucked and I
did Battle of the Bands Never.
We were never that good.
Are you kidding my?
Speaker 1 (21:30):
band sucked and I did
Battle of the Bands.
I think we sang one song.
Sang one song and the rest wasjust instrumental.
I was just playing stupid punkrock.
It was so dumb.
Well, it wasn't dumb, we hadfun, of course.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
But it was like At
the time, though you're like I
am so getting a girlfriend timethough you're like I am so
getting a girlfriend.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
Yeah, let me just
walk around the crowd, not at
the second grader thing I'mthinking in general, but I do
see how that sounded weird yeah, thanks I want to go back to
what I said was that it was thatyou rewind yeah, yeah I'm still
getting a girlfriend in my highschool, where appropriate yeah,
uh, no, no, I might have beendone with high school by then,
(22:15):
oh yeah so then you can't stillcreepy I don't remember, like
why would I be in a school?
Speaker 2 (22:23):
was this for charity
was some were you dying?
Speaker 1 (22:26):
was somebody dying?
We were definitely asked like, hey, I know a teacher that's
looking for something fun fortheir second graders to do.
Uh-huh, would you guys want togo play in their gymnasium?
I don't know, like I was like,say like, that it's gymnasium.
Speaker 2 (22:41):
You know, just like
there's no pause in the word
gymnasium.
It's not like somebody's nasium, it's not like a guy named jim
who owns a nasium, it's justgymnasium.
Man.
Speaker 1 (22:50):
Like just my mistake
okay, I'd rewind it, but I don't
know how to make that, justindulged on that stupid joke
yeah, I just kept going you did.
It's really annoying, there wasno, there was no stopping you.
Anyway, what I was trying tosay what is?
Your point of all this.

(23:12):
come on the stage.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
I love the idea of
having a mariachi band yes,
that's still my favorite, I know, I think if I do dry bar, I
think we have to find a I thinkwe do I think that's it.
Like I think we just have tofind a local mariachi band to
come on and then be like ole andthen leave, and then
introducing Matt Summerfield.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
You'd already be
introduced, because they do the
introduction.

Matt Summerfield, please welcome
to the stage, Matt Summerfield.

You better be in a sombrero.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Do I wear a sombrero,
mi amigo.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
And then I walk out
with the sombrero.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
Throw it into the
crowd, throw it into the crowd?
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Is it too indulgent
or?
Or or Does one of the mariachimen not have one on and he comes
up to me, he stops playing andhe gets your hat, takes the hat
and he goes, give it back, putsit on, and then they walk away.
