Julie (00:19):
Kia ora and welcome to
Whispers of Grace, a place for
women to be encouraged by God'sholy word.
I'm your host, julie Colbeth, and I am overjoyed to dig into
the Bible with you today.
Anxiety, dread, panic, worry, fear these are all very real
(00:52):
feelings.
For most of us, fear is aninteresting thing.
It's actually something builtinto us by god to help keep us
safe.
God designed us to have awarning system to assess
situations and equip us to getfree of them, but fear was never
meant to rule us.
2 Timothy 1.7 reassures us thatwe have not been given a spirit
(01:13):
of fear, but of power and loveand a sound mind.
God's desire is for us to walkin power, in love and with
confidence.
The opposite of fear isassurance, cheer, confidence,
(01:34):
faith, contentment, joy, trust,a spirit of calm.
I recently studied through thebook of Philippians with some
friends and we discussed theepic verse Be anxious for
nothing, but in everything, byprayer and supplication, with
(01:55):
thanksgiving, let your requestsbe made known to God, and the
peace which surpassesunderstanding will guard your
hearts and minds.
Through Christ Jesus.
While many of us can recitethis verse from memory, putting
it into practice is anotherthing entirely.
During our study, our groupcame across a very interesting
(02:18):
definition for worry To have anorphan spirit.
When I heard that, I was struckby the simple truth of it.
An orphan has no oversight, noone caring for them, no one
devoted to their good.
They have no good father.
So when we decide to worry, wetake on the spirit of an orphan.
(02:43):
To worry, we take on the spiritof an orphan.
Worry is essentially worshipingthe problem.
Now please hear my heart.
It's not my intention todownplay the difficulty of
chronic anxiety or act as thoughthere is a perfectly simple
solution that you can apply andall of your fears and worries
will dissolve.
(03:03):
Fear and anxiety can be amassive beast to slay, and I'm
aware that the battle rages forsome of us daily.
What I do know for sure is thatyour wonderful counselor hears
your heart and he's the only onewhose opinion you need to be
concerned with.
(03:25):
But for this morning I want tomarinate in Psalm 27, which
speaks to the issue of fear.
This one is another Psalm ofDavid entitled An Exuberant
Declaration of Faith.
The Lord is my light and mysalvation.
Whom shall I fear?
(03:46):
The Lord is the stronghold ofmy life.
Of whom shall I be afraid whenevildoers assail me, to eat up
my flesh, my adversaries andfoes.
It is they who stumble and fall.
Though an army encamp againstme, my heart shall not fear.
(04:07):
1 Peter, chapter 1, verses 1through 10.
For he will hide me in hisshelter in the day of trouble.
(04:30):
He will conceal me under thecover of his tent.
He will lift me high upon arock, and now my head shall be
lifted up above my enemies allaround me and I will offer in
his tent sacrifices with shoutsof joy.
I will sing and make melody tothe Lord.
(05:04):
I will sing and make melody tothe Lord.
Face from me, turn not yourservant away in anger, o you who
have been my help.
Cast me not off.
Forsake me not, o God of mysalvation, for my father and my
mother have forsaken me.
But the Lord will take me in.
Teach me your way, o Lord, andlead me on a level path because
(05:29):
of my enemies.
Give me not up to the will ofmy adversaries, for false
witnesses have risen against meand they breathe out violence.
I believe that I shall lookupon the goodness of the Lord in
the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord.
Be strong and let your hearttake courage.
(05:52):
Wait for the Lord.
Be strong and let your hearttake courage.
Wait for the Lord.
So many beautiful truths that wecan meditate on here this
morning, but I want to focus onwhy the author is not afraid and
how he maintains his confidence, although imperfectly at times.
Even though he was a giantslayer, he still struggled with
(06:14):
fear.
David declares truth overhimself and others when he says
the Lord is my light andsalvation.
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the strength of mylife.
Of whom shall I be afraid?
The best remedy for the lies ofSatan is to speak truth to them
(06:36):
over and over again, not toworship the problem by worrying,
but to worship God, who is ourlight, our salvation and our
strength.
Then we allow these irrefutabletruths to give birth to the
conclusion.
Of whom shall I be afraid?
(06:58):
Matthew 5 28 echoes this truthin red letters in my Bible.
Do not fear those who kill thebody but cannot kill the soul,
but rather fear him who is ableto destroy both soul and body in
hell.
Jesus gave this encouragementto his disciples after he sent
(07:20):
them out to begin sharing thegospel.
These men would give theirlives for Jesus and I believe
David gives us some hints as tohow to remain in this mindset.
In verse 8 we read when you saidSeek my face, my heart said to
you your face, lord, I will seek.
If we're to remain in a placeof faith, we need to continue to
(07:42):
seek the face of the Lord withall of our heart.
We must marinate in truth andcontinue to refute the lies of
the enemy that cause worry andfear.
Verse 14 gives us the moststraightforward and best advice
that we could follow to masterour fear and conquer the orphan
(08:04):
spirit.
Wait on the Lord, be of goodcourage and he shall strengthen
your heart.
Wait, I say on the Lord, be ofgood courage and he shall
strengthen your heart.
Wait, I say on the Lord.
