Julie (00:19):
Kia ora, and welcome to
Whispers of Grace, a place for
women to be encouraged by God'sholy word.
I'm your host, julie Colbeth, and I am overjoyed to dig into
the Bible with you today.
Psalm 46 will end our 10-dayjourney of encouragement from
(00:41):
the Psalms.
It's a perfect end because itincludes many of the topics that
we've focused on.
It speaks of God being ourrefuge, our hiding place of
safety and our very present helpwhen we're in trouble.
And because of this constanthelp, we do not need to be
(01:02):
afraid.
This psalm encourages us to bestill and to know that he is God
.
I pray that as we read throughthis rich piece of scripture,
your soul will soak up all thetruth.
Psalm 46 was written by thesons of Korah, who were a
priestly family that wereinvolved with temple worship.
(01:23):
It's entitled God, the refugeof of His People and Conqueror
of the Nations.
Martin Luther was known to callon this psalm when he was in
his greatest distress and sayLet us sing the 46th psalm in
concert and then let the devildo his worst, and then let the
devil do his worst.
(01:44):
God is our refuge and strength,a very present help in trouble.
Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth be removed
and though the mountains becarried into the midst of the
sea.
Though its waters roar and betroubled.
Though the mountains shake withits swelling, selah, there is a
(02:10):
river whose streams shall makeglad.
The city of God, the holy placeof the tabernacle of the Most
High God, is in the midst of her.
She shall not be moved.
God shall help her.
Just at the break of dawn, thenations raged, the kingdoms were
(02:30):
moved.
He uttered his voice.
The earth melted.
The Lord of hosts is with us.
The God of Jacob is our refuge.
Selah is our refuge.
Selah, come behold the works ofthe Lord, who has made
desolations in the earth.
He makes wars cease to the endof the earth.
(02:54):
He breaks the bow and cuts thespear in two.
He burns the chariot in thefire.
Be still and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among thenations.
I will be exalted in the earth.
The Lord of hosts is with us.
The God of Jacob is our refuge.
(03:16):
Selah, the heart of this psalmreminds us of the amazing power
of God.
When he utters his voice, thevery earth melts.
He makes wars cease and breaksthe weapons of man with no
(03:36):
effort at all, even when thefoundations of the earth are
broken, mountains crumble andthe seas roar, we are safe in
our hiding place.
Make God your refuge.
He's got you.
Verse five says God is in themidst of her.
(03:57):
She shall not be moved.
God shall help her just at thebreak of dawn.
This verse reminds us onceagain that God is constantly
with us and because of this wecan't be moved outside of his
reach.
We cannot fall or he can'tcatch us.
We stand steadfast andunshakable because the Lord
(04:22):
upholds us, and he often showsup just at the break of dawn,
right when things are the worst.
He is present.
This reminds me of the sayingit's always darkest before the
dawn.
We have unshakable stability inGod and we are promised help
(04:44):
just at the right time.
Mary and Martha thought thatJesus had made an error, waiting
to come to them until theirbrother Lazarus had died, but
Jesus had plans that theycouldn't even imagine.
He always comes at just theright time.
Charles Spurgeon put it thisway Man's haste is often folly,
(05:09):
but God's apparent delays areever wise and, when rightly
viewed, are no delays at all.
God always shows up, but histiming is different than ours.
God always shows up, but histiming is different than ours.
Sometimes the things that heallows in our path threaten to
shake our trust in him, but weneed to remember who it is that
(05:33):
we are waiting for.
We need to be still and knowthat he is God.
We need to cease from focusingon other things and remember
that he is the lover of oursouls.
We need to stop striving andyield to the truth of God as our
(05:58):
provider.
We need to be quiet to hear thepower of his voice, to
experience his character as wepatiently wait on him.
We need to still the arguingwith his process, stop our
mouths from opposing his way andsimply surrender to the
victorious God.
When our contrary voices aresilenced and surrendered, then
(06:22):
we can truly exalt him as God.
God is our refuge and strength,a very present help in trouble.
Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth be removed
