(00:20):
Greetings and welcome to anotherepisode of Wild Mouse.
It is, of course, the most wonderful time of the year.
The holiday season, the spooky season, it is Halloween time and
so of course, who else would I bring on the show for the the
first ever Halloween episode a week and a half before
(00:40):
Halloween. But this is of course the Co
host of my horror movie podcast, the grave Plot podcast, making
his third appearance, finally becoming a wild mouse All Star.
Please welcome back Skeletony Tony.
G Yay. It's me.
Welcome me. I'm here.
Yay. And by the time this is out, the
(01:01):
Graveplot podcast will be back. Yeah.
I was just thinking about that. We got to.
We're going to be starting to record again here before the end
of the month. Yeah, we're coming up against it
and we're going to have a episode every goddamn week.
Yeah, right into the fire. Yeah, part of me was like,
because like I said, this episode comes out October 22nd,
(01:22):
so well before Halloween. But you know, part of me was
like, should I just RIP off October Rama and just do an
episode every week for October for this podcast?
And then I was like, no, that's a lot of work.
So here we are. Tony, how are you?
(01:42):
I'm, I'm all right, I'm very tired.
Today is my today's technically my last day of of paternity
leave. OK, so I got you in just under
the wire here. Yeah, like I've, you know, I was
working a part time schedule. I was still working three days a
week, which I know doesn't. I think the fact that I'm
(02:06):
working more than I'm taking time off was not lost on me.
But yeah, so today is the last day I have off before I go back
to a full time schedule, so. All right, Well, today what we
are here to talk about is, you know, it's the spooky season.
(02:29):
I did not scary farm last episode.
And today what we're going to betalking about is not really a
theme park in the traditional sense.
If I remember correctly, there was one ride.
I remember there being like a big swing ride.
Yeah, yeah, they had the big, there's a name for it, a big
yeah, the big giant swing thing that you see it pretty much
(02:50):
every fair in in the world. Yeah, You know the thing, it
looks like a big umbrella and there's like swings that hang
down on a chain and it spins around and you go out like wider
and wider as it spins faster andit goes up and down.
Yeah, I think it's just called the swings.
The fucking swing. The fucking swings, you know.
But we are talking about specifically the Queen Mary's
(03:12):
Dark Harbor. Oh, it's fucking dark.
It's so, so dark. Yeah, I'm.
I'm so glad it's back. That gives me warm and fuzzies.
Yeah, Tony and I went to Dark Harbor back in 2019, just before
(03:33):
the. World just want to say that the
tendency to just always say darkABBA, Dark ABBA, it's it's very
strong, yeah. We went back in 2019, like I
said, just before the world shutdown and it didn't have it
didn't do the 2020 season right.No, everything.
(03:55):
Everything was still shut down 2020.
Yeah, 2020 and 20/20/21 there was no Dark Harbor.
And then in 2023, the Queen Marycame back strong with Shaq
Toberfest. Which apparently was pretty
lost. I mean, it looked cool and I
think it's like it's somewhere else now.
(04:19):
Like it's still a thing. Oh, do they move it?
Yeah, I think it's at. Is it at Elitch Gardens now?
I don't know is it? What is Shektoberfest?
How about where is Shektoberfest?
I mean, yeah, like before we getinto Dark Harbor, we'll very
(04:40):
briefly talk about Shektoberfestsince I have the website open.
But. Oh oh wait, this says will not
be taking place this year. I swear I saw.
Something just pull that up. I swear I saw something about it
this year. I wonder if they just didn't
want to do it. Well, I guess because Dark
Harbor is put together by the organization that's behind Queen
(05:04):
Mary. I wonder if they were, they just
wanted their space back. That kind of booted them out.
Are you very possible, huh? Yeah.
I could have sworn it was somewhere else.
I, I no, you know what I think it was?
No, it was Hershey Park. Yeah, it's not even in
California anymore. Yeah, Hershey Park.
(05:27):
Yeah, Hershey Park. Halloween partnership with
Shaquille O'Neal. There it is.
Interesting. Yeah, so I mean, Shaq Toberfest,
obviously, you know, I'd probably not run by, but
endorsed by Shaquille O'Neal. The very large basketball player
featured some, you know, much like Halloween Horror Nights or
(05:49):
Queen Harbor as we'll get into it, featured different mazes.
They had Dead Man's Wharf, Pirate's Cove, Midway Madness
and Diesel's Pumpkin Patch. Midway Madness.
Yeah, that's you have to say it like that.
It had live entertainment, including Lovecraft, which what
did we we did some kind of like virtual event that featured
(06:12):
Lovecraft. Do you remember that?
Virtual event then Lovecraft. How are we using Lovecraft in
this in this? It's the name of a band or a
group. LVCRFT Lovecraft with no vowels.
I don't recall. All right, well, never mind
(06:33):
then, that tiki terror, which is, you know, speaking my name.
Anyway, we're not here to talk about Shaqtoberfest.
We are here to talk about the one and only Queen Mary's Dark
Harbor, which did return in grand fashion in 2024 and is now
back. Last year, they were.
(06:54):
Yeah. And now they are back once again
for the 2025 Halloween season. First off, I guess for people
who may be listening who don't know what the Queen Mary is, we
can start there. The Queen Mary is a big fucking
ship. It's a nightclub purchased by
(07:15):
Tobias Fionke. It is.
Tobias is Queen Mary. No, it's a retired British ocean
liner that is now. Is it permanently affixed to the
dock? Yeah, it's welded to the dock.
OK, it's welded to the dock in Long Beach, CA.
(07:36):
It's, I mean, it's, it's been around since 1936.
So it's a old ass ship. And like I said, it's fucking
enormous. It is big.
It was at one point, I think it was the biggest ocean liner I.
Believe that's true that's. On the ocean, like bigger it
was. I believe it's bigger than the
Titanic was if I remember right. And it never sank yet.
(08:01):
Yeah, it's it's also a terrible movie starring Alice Eve.
But that. Was bad.
If you want to hear more about that, you can go listen to our
episode of The Grave Plot where we talk about it.
I did like that they filmed on the ship though.
I mean, that seems like everything, seems like
everything that's filmed in California that takes place on a
(08:22):
boat or a ship is filmed on the Queen Mary.
Yeah, it's kind of become like acultural icon.
Yeah, I can just remember the episode of New Girl when they go
on, go on a cruise, I guess. And like it was obviously the
Queen Mary, like any anybody who's who's been there would
(08:43):
recognize that it was the Queen Mary.
Yeah, the Queen Mary is also allegedly, notoriously haunted.
It's been on multiple, you know, ghost hunter shows and like the,
you know, the world's most haunted places kind of shows.
You actually did a ghost tour, correct?
Yes, How was that interesting? I mean, you know, I'm, I don't,
(09:09):
I don't believe in ghosts, but it's, you know, I, I don't
believe in ghosts, but I always enjoy a good ghost story.
So, yeah, the, I mean, the, the,the tour guides, when you, when
you do a ghost tour, they're always, they're always really
into it. You know, they want to sell the,
the ambiance, you know, and theytake you down into like the,
(09:31):
the, the bowels of the ship and like all these little dark
corners and stuff that you, you probably wouldn't.
I, I think there actually were some spaces on the ghost tour
that they don't take you to on the regular tour.
So, yeah, I mean, it was definitely spooky, but I can
(09:53):
confirm that. But yeah, All in all, it was, it
was fun. Whether or not you're a a
believer, it's still a fun time. And you know, you, they, we, we
also did a regular tour. We did a regular tour and a
ghost tour. And hearing the the differences
in how the story was was told kind of gives you a little more
(10:16):
insight just because you're, you're kind of picking up little
different details that are beingpresented.
So. Did you have anything like
paranormal ish happen? No, because that does.
That's not real it. Does I mean so like anything
that like you couldn't quite explain or anything that just
kind of seemed weird or off or anything?
(10:37):
No, there was a section in the in the hall area where was.
I think it was like they swore up and down that there was like,
hell was it. I think it was like maybe where
(10:58):
they kept like prisoners, prisoners of war, because it was
a a wartime ship at one point during during World War 2.
And I think you're like, it's like a very dark area.
Like the, the, the ceiling kind of pitches down and it gets very
tight. And the further back you go, the
like, it goes into like pure blackness and it, you know,
(11:23):
they're like, oh, well, you know, this is one of the most
haunted areas. This is where we get the most
reports of people hearing voices, hearing unexplainable
noises, people being touched. So it's like, I think they said
something kind of implying it's like, if you're going to see
something, it'll probably be here.
But definitely. I mean, you know, I've, you know
(11:45):
this story, but one thing that Ihad, it happened to me, I went
to the Overlook Hotel. The the The Stanley Hotel is
with its real name, but you know, it's it's the hotel that
the Overlook Hotel in Stanley King's The Shining is based on.
Stephen King. What I say?
Stanley. Oh, Stanley Hotel, Stephen King,
(12:07):
yes. Stephen's lesser known cousin.
Yes, yes, his pseudonym Stanley King.
But OK, you threw me off. But it, it is also like
notoriously haunted. And I'm, I am more of a believer
than Tony, but I'm also a very strong skeptic.
(12:28):
But one thing they did is they gave us Dum Dums and they had us
hold them in the palm of our hand upside down.
So like the stick was sticking straight up and the stick would
like lean at like a 45° angle. And I had no explanation.
I don't know, you know, maybe it's an electromagnetic thing or
something, but maybe it's a, some kind of static, I don't
(12:51):
know. But it it was eerie and and I
can't, like I said, I can't explain why it happened.
Like it makes me, you told me that story before and it makes
me wonder like where did they get the Dum Dums?
Like how did they happen across that?
Yeah, like how was that the thing that they noticed?
Yeah. Or it's just like something like
(13:14):
similar. And they're like, Oh, well,
let's give some. Let's give people a treat when
they're done with the tour, Yeah.
Right. That's like with some guy, just
like, hey, look what I'm doing, I can hold it upside down.
Whoa, look at me. I'm a juggler.
I don't know. But yes, back to the Queen Mary
and Dark Harbor specifically. So Dark Harbor.
(13:35):
According to their website, whichisdarkharborhalloween.com,
Dark Harbor is Southern California's most haunted
Halloween event. Each fall, the Queen Mary
transforms the ship and surrounding harbor into a
massive Halloween festival featuring haunted mazes,
hundreds of monsters, immersive attractions, live entertainment,
VIP experiences, themed bars andlounges, carnival rides, festive
(13:58):
eats and treats, Instagrammable moments and more.
Our festival format allows you to pick and choose from a
variety of attractions and experiences, from terrifying
mazes aboard the notoriously haunted Queen Mary to festive
festival favorites like The Sinister Swings.
There it is. The Sinister Swings.
That's what they're called. There we go.
So like I said, me and Tony wentin 2019, so we are going to talk
(14:19):
a little bit about our experience.
Then we'll talk a little bit about what this year's
experience kind of looks like. And I will tell you the first
thing I remember is US going through the doors and being
like, oh, look, there's a bar right here.
Let's get a little drink. And yeah, that's exactly what we
did. And if I remember correctly,
(14:40):
those drinks were pretty strong. They they were, they were pretty
kicking, yeah. They were generous and that was
kind of an ongoing theme throughout the night was us
drinking because not only not only because there's different
spots throughout the whole experience where you can buy
drinks, but within the mazes there are hidden bars and that
(15:06):
was my favorite part of the whole thing.
My favorite part of the whole thing is when Taylor walked like
Sherman Helmsley. OK, I don't remember if we've
talked about this when Tony was on the show before, but for
whatever reason, during this whole trip, there was three
things that Tony and I were fucking obsessed with.
(15:30):
And there are three of the dumbest things that we have ever
done and we were obsessed with them for like a week and 1/2.
Fucking random nonsensical bullshit.
And every time one of us did it,we would laugh hysterically.
The first one was Norm MacDonald's impression of David
(15:52):
Letterman talking about some guyasking him for gum and being
like, hey, you got to go. We're then talking about the
greasy guys at the restaurant going Are you enjoying your
ship? And this podcast isn't video,
(16:16):
but there's a hand motion that goes with it.
It's like a guy holding a tray, right?
And we would randomly just make this hand motion and start
laughing hysterically. There's a photo of us going down
Splash Mountain just going. Are you enjoying your trip?
There's a pretty good one of Taylor on the Incredible holster
doing it too. That's right.
(16:38):
The second one was an Arrested Development reference, which was
not Tobias is Queen Mary. No, but it was Sugarfoot.
We even went to trivia one night.
We went to an Arrested Development trivia and our team
name was the Sugarfoot Fan Club.Sugarfoot.
(17:04):
Sugarfoot. And then finally, the third one
was walking like Sherman Helmsley, but it was it was like
a combination. It was the dumbest of all of
them. Yes, it was a combination of
like Sherman Helmsley and Conor McGregor and we would just like
(17:27):
walk like doing these noodle arms behind us.
And yeah, I remember being about3 or 4 drinks in and Tony just
being like Taylor. See the Sherman helps me walk.
There's AI think that was like Ithink was that back when they
first started doing Reels on Instagram?
(17:49):
Because I have a vague recollection of of filming that
and then putting it on Instagram.
I mean, yeah, we have the, we have it in our Google Photos
folder, right? Oh, that was a good trip.
It was a great trip. We should do that again.
Yeah, in 18 years. Yeah, so I remember getting in
(18:17):
right away and there was like, as there was all kinds of
decorations before you got into like the main area.
And that's kind of where like these photos, which I think I'll
post some of these on Instagram, but there's like me standing in
a coffin drinking. There's you with some kind of
like Corpse Bride drinking. Sure, yeah.
(18:42):
And then there was like this carnival Barker or something
outside and it was he was up on like a scaffolding.
Yeah, like a big scaffolding archway, you know, had the, you
know, the Queen Mary or the DarkHarbor banner and bunch of loud
fucking music and stuff and. Yeah.
And and I mean, like we talked about this shutdown in 2020 for
(19:05):
COVID didn't happen in 2021. And for the longest time, Tony
and I were like, we didn't even know it, but we went to the last
Dark Harbor. Yeah, it's like, holy shit, how
do we we fucking lucked out? Yeah.
And I think it was also like the20th or the 10th, the 10th
anniversary. I don't, I don't recall that,
(19:26):
but OK. Yeah, I only know that because
there's the picture of us in front of the step and repeat.
And it says Queen Mary's 10th star Carver Fear lives here.
Right. OK, Yeah, I was just, I was
going to say I remember that because it was a kind of a red
carpet type thing. I mean, you know, you're
standing in line, obviously, butthen once you get up to the
front and they're starting to let you in, yeah, there's a step
and repeat. And I think there actually was a
(19:46):
red carpet, if I remember. Right.
Yeah. And so, yeah, like, even before
you get in, it felt like an event, you know?
Yeah. And so like I said, we went in,
there was, I don't think we had to walk through a bar to enter,
but there was like we walked in and there was a bar right there.
So we immediately got cocktails and we walked in.
(20:08):
And it's, I mean, I don't know how to describe it, but it's
like, it's like a festival in a movie.
You know how in movies that like, walk into a festival and
everything is just spread out and they're stuffed?
Everywhere. And there's like flames going
off in one corner and there's like kids screaming over here.
It was like that, you know? And it was.
(20:29):
Yeah, it was already dark. It was already dusk and so it
was just like, this is perfect. Yeah, yeah, this is it.
Walked in and just like this. This is our shit right here.
We're home, yeah. Yeah.
And I mean, we didn't do not Scary Farm, we didn't do Fright
(20:50):
Night at Six Flags, but the stuff we did, this was my
favorite. Really.
Yeah. More than Universal or
Disneyland. I think so.
Universal was just way too crowded.
Like we didn't get to do very much universal.
We Yeah. And we got there late, too.
(21:12):
That's true, yeah, cuz we went there straight from the airport.
Yeah, and like we got there on Friday night, which was a big
fucking mistake. And you know, anybody who hasn't
driven in LA on a Friday night, it's a big fucking mistake,
especially when you're trying todrive into Universal City.
(21:33):
Yeah. So we took all these fucking
back roads, like through some Canyon.
I don't even know which one it was, but like, I had like, thank
God for GPS because I hadn't, I had no fucking clue where we
were going. And yeah, it took us, what,
probably close to two hours to get there.
(21:54):
And LAX is not that far from Universal Studios.
So the fact that it took us thatfucking long to get there, you
know, really says something. Yeah.
And I, I just remember we didn'tget to go on like the US maze.
We didn't get to do the Strangerthings maze because they all had
(22:16):
like, I want to say like 3 hour long waits.
And we were just like, no. So we rode Jurassic World and we
went on the, we did the, we wentto, we went and did the like non
EP mazes. We did like the pharaoh maze or
whatever. And I do remember we did the
(22:37):
House of 1000 Corpses maze. We did the House of the 1000
Corpses and we did Krampus. That's right.
And let's see and. Then we did the fair one I.
Went there, I went there one other time with my wife and I'm
trying to not mix up the trips. Was Nightmare on Elm Street was
(22:57):
that? I don't.
If that was there, we didn't do it.
OK then that must have been withmy wife then anyway.
Well, on the way dark. Harbor.
Yeah. On the subject of mazes, some of
the mazes that took place at theone that Tony and I went to, I
don't really remember because I know we didn't do all of them.
(23:19):
No, I think there was 1. Maybe 2 that we didn't get time
to do, yeah. Probably around there.
Yeah, it was the the the lines were so long for all of them.
They were all long. Yeah.
So it just goes to show how manypeople were actually there.
And then you know, when, when you when you actually get in,
(23:40):
you know, you, you want to take your time because you just spent
all this time waiting in line. You want to take your time and
absorb what's going on in this maze.
And then like Taylor said, you know, there's these hidden bars
that some of them you kind of find your way to others you have
to be like invited to. And so if that happens and that
(24:01):
just adds time, so you know, youknow, the things only open till
what, midnight maybe? Probably midnight.
A year earlier. So yeah, you got to.
You got to bide your time wisely.
Yeah. So the first one we'll talk
(24:21):
about was called Lullaby, and some of these are on the ship,
some of them are on the on the dock.
This one, it was very like water, like there's a lot of
water imagery. And there was a ghost named
Scary Mary. Water.
Water. Very funny.
There would be a girl who just happens to be named Scary Mary
(24:42):
on the Queen Mary. No relation.
Go figure. I think this is the one where we
had to get the wooden nickel. Yeah, and this is the one where
the where the where she was liketrapped in a tube or something,
right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There's all these big tubes and there's visual effects that I
(25:06):
don't know if they're LED screens or holograms or what
exactly they were, but they featured like, you know, Scary
Mary would pop up in these tubes.
Yeah. And it's like a 3D image.
Yeah. So, you know, if if you're not
like Privy to the fact that thiskind of technology exists, you
might be like a little taken aback.
(25:27):
If you're from like Arkansas or something.
I'd say no offense, but fuck that.
Bill, this one has a unhidden bar, and I know this was not one
of the first ones we went to. I think this is one of the last
ones we went to. But like, as you're going
(25:49):
through, there's this bar and you're just like, oh, I found
the bar. But The thing is, you have to
stop at this bar and get a drink.
And then they give you a wooden nickel that lets you into the
secret bar. And I remember there was like a,
a symbol on the wall or something that like signaled the
(26:13):
hidden bar. And I think this is the.
One there was like there was. Like a curtain and a guy like
opened the curtain and was like, and we were like, oh, oh, there,
we're going there. There it is too late.
We already saw you. And I also think this is the one
where we went down. We've got in the elevator, we
went like down into the bowels of the ship and that's where the
(26:35):
hidden bar was. Was it this one?
I think so. I remember doing that.
But yeah. OK, yeah, that was weird
because, you know, we're we're in the the hull of a ship, but
it looks like a fucking warehouse.
I mean, there are pipes all overthe place and you know, just God
(26:57):
knows what the hell they do, just arbitrarily placed pipes.
But you know, it's huge. It's fucking cavernous.
Down there so. The fact that we're walking on
this like catwalk in, in the hull of a of a giant fucking
ocean liner. But it looks like, like I said,
we're in a warehouse. It was kind of kind of weird.
(27:18):
I also remember there was like no kind of supervision down
there. Like there was the bartender and
other than that we just like started wandering off.
Yeah, I mean, like a lot of it, you know, like especially down
in the hall, there's there are these catwalks where you kind of
go one way or the other. But yeah, there were areas where
(27:38):
these kind of went off. It's like, can we go here?
No one stopping us. Yeah.
There's no ropes or anything. Yeah.
Yeah, there was a couple times we just kind of wandered off and
we're like, oh, maybe we'll see a ghost over here.
You know the one bummer about the bars was he couldn't take
your drinks with you. That's true, yeah.
(28:00):
You had to finish in there at the bar.
I don't really remember anythingelse about this mass.
Yeah, I mean, honestly, for me, it being, you know, six years
ago, I've lived a lifetime sincethen.
It's like I I remember doing themazes but like the details about
(28:21):
them are kind of fuzzy. And I mean, if this is the one
we're thinking of, I think this was probably the most memorable
one just cuz it did have those kind of visual effects, the kind
of video screens and technology that none of the other ones
really had. Most of the other ones kind of
focus more on scare actors. And yeah.
(28:42):
Speaking of scare actors, I willsay this is the the one place we
went to that I got scared at. Not scared but, you know,
startled. But I'm.
Startled do. You remember this?
No. The guy on the fucking stilts.
Oh, right, right, right. He had those little finger
(29:03):
symbol things and he just like came right up behind me.
Somehow I did not see this 9 foot tall person behind me.
Yeah, and I saw him coming and Ijust didn't.
I didn't say a fucking word. Of course you didn't.
And the thing, this was like thelast thing we did too.
So we'd already done Horror Nights, We'd already done Oogie
Boogie Bash. You know, not that I expect to
(29:24):
get scared of Oogie Boogie Bash, but but so I was just like,
yeah, you know, I'm a tough guy. Not, I mean, not really.
Like Tony and I, we both worked at haunts.
We've both been to a lot of haunts.
We both watch a ton of horror movies.
We kind of know how these thingswork, so we're kind of hard to
get. But when you come from behind,
(29:45):
well, that's I phrase that terribly.
When you approach someone from behind and above them and you
finger symbol them right in the ear, they're going to kind of do
that. Phrasing.
But I just remember like jumpingand then just going son of a
bitch. I was so mad that I finally got
(30:09):
got. Yeah, there's, you know, I, I, I
tell people constantly don't sneak up behind me because if
you, if you sneak up behind me and you shock me, I'm just, I'm
a, I'm a reactive person. There are, there's a very strong
(30:32):
chance I might come out swingingand that's just, I think just
something I inherited from from my dad.
But yeah, so I always tell people don't fucking sneak up
behind me because they it's going to be your problem more
than it's why 1. Thing I also remember about this
like you know the description talked about VIP areas and I
(30:56):
just remember when we went the VIP areas were just these like
shipping containers. Yeah, there are, like, seating
areas. And you know, when you've been
walking around all night and youknow, you're drunk and, you know
your fucking feet hurt and you just want to sit down, like, you
(31:19):
see this area just with chairs and no one there?
Yeah, It's like, this looks likea good place to sit.
And then you got some fucking nutsack coming up.
You like, can I see your wristband?
It's like, oh, so it's going to be like, that is it?
I vaguely remember, correct me if I'm misremembering this, but
(31:40):
I vaguely remember her being like, are you guys VIP and you
going yes, yes I. AM that very well could have
happened. And then she was like, can I see
your wristbands? And we were like, I'm just like,
you guys are not VI PS And we'relike, so we can't sit here.
(32:02):
It's just it's a chair. It's a plastic chair.
No one else is here. It's the same chairs you buy at
fucking Walmart to put in your backyard.
Right. Like we weren't blocking anybody
else from doing anything. We weren't getting anything
free. We like we should have been able
to sit and finish our drinks I think.
Yeah. I mean, I know they got to
maintain some kind of exclusivity, but honestly, the
(32:26):
way the the way they have it setup is there's not a lot of
exclusive exclusivity to have. So I guess something small like
that when they already have a very small separation between
what's standard and what's VIPI guess you got to maintain the
(32:47):
the facade. I guess I don't know how much
VIP tickets cost, but if that's all you got for him, that was.
Yeah, I think like you, maybe you got like special drinks or
something. I don't fucking know.
But I know it wasn't, you know, we're fucking cheapskates, so it
definitely wasn't enough for us,but it was, I mean, it was an
expensive fucking trip, you know?
(33:08):
We did Universal Studios. Yeah.
Universal Studios. Knott's Berry or not?
Not for Disneyland. This.
And I like scary movies. Oh yeah, yeah.
So we, we. And then of course, food, car
travel, all that shit. And it's like it was an
expensive trip. Yeah, and we stayed in that
(33:32):
weird Airbnb. That was weird.
That was very weird and. We didn't know other people were
going to be thinking. No, yeah.
So like this Airbnb we got, it was this house owned by, I
believe he was Vietnamese, didn't speak a lot of English.
(33:55):
And you know, we got there in the middle of the night,
literally the middle of the night, because we went straight
from the airport to Universal Studios.
Then we came back to this place at like 2:00 in the morning,
right? And that's when we were checking
in. So we go in and like right off
(34:16):
the front of the house is like aliving room area and then 2
doors off to the side and unbeknownst to us there are two
separate rooms like the, you know, like kind of like a
dormitory style almost. And you know, we, we got into
(34:38):
our room, which is this tiny little bedroom with a what, like
a queen size, maybe full size bed and then a tiny little cot
in the corner. Yeah.
And I remember we alternated each night between who was going
to sleep in the bed, who's goingto sleep on the cot and the
nights you slept on the cot, youweren't really going to sleep.
(35:01):
Yeah, you felt that the next morning.
Yeah. But yeah.
And then like the rest of the house was behind this.
But like, I don't know if this was like a renovated garage,
this living room area or what. But like, beyond that was
another door with, you know, dead bolts and shit on it.
Like, OK, this is where the person lives.
(35:23):
This is their rental space, and that's their house.
It was just a weird setup. And the fact that there were
these two girls staying in the room next to us and we didn't
say a word to them the entire time and like, like passing
them, like coming. Like if we're like leaving and
(35:43):
they're coming back out or coming back in and not saying a
word to them, like people were sharing this living space with
and not speaking to them. That's just weird.
It's a weird situation. It was awkward.
OK, so then the maze I next remember most is circus, which
you can probably guess what thisone is, but I remember there was
(36:08):
like a creepy ticket booth. I think I got a photo of it.
There was like shadows behind it.
Yeah, something like that. This.
Yeah, this is probably the one Iremember best.
And I remember, like, looking back on those pictures just over
the years when I've kind of comeacross them.
(36:30):
So I realized how shitty phone cameras were just six years ago.
It's like you couldn't take a picture in low light for shit.
So like all these dim pictures just look like hell.
Like you can barely make it out.Yeah, a lot of it's just like
you can't see our faces at all or like the ones that were
(36:50):
clearly, like lightened. It's they just look all grainy
and bad. Yeah, yeah, this one.
You know, obviously clowns are going to be a big part of this.
You said you this is the one youremember the most.
What else do you remember about it?
(37:11):
I guess it it was basically the the maze was like walking
through a carnival. I believe there was like, kind
of like a freak show. Yeah, I was gonna say a
sideshow. I remember there a side there
being a sideshow. Yeah.
And yeah, I like like Taylor show lots of clowns.
And this is, I think the first hidden bar that we found, wasn't
(37:35):
it? I believe so.
I just. Might have been the 1st.
That's what I have in my head. Was this the first one?
Because I remember they told us there were hidden bars and we go
in and this is I, I recall this being the first one that we did.
And we found the hidden bar or somebody stopped us and asked if
we wanted to, I don't know, asked some arbitrary question,
(37:59):
like, do you want to have fun orsomething like that?
Well, what do you have in mind? Yeah.
And they opened this fucking panel wall.
Like, honestly, had they not opened it, I wouldn't even know
it was there. But they opened it up and
there's, yeah, this hidden bar back there And, and all,
honestly, the hidden bars were all exciting.
Like the fact that you're finding them was the exciting
(38:20):
part. Yeah, yeah.
But you know, they were pretty, I guess if you want a quieter
place with somewhere where you could sit and then maybe the
hidden bars were kind of a nice bonus.
But I know they had like, special cocktails and all of
them. But it's like, I'm such a picky
(38:41):
drinker that I didn't really enjoy most of them.
Just just give me my whiskey andCoke.
That's what I want. I was going to say I I was going
to ask if there were signature cocktails.
I thought there were, but I wasn't 100% so I'm glad you said
that. Yeah, I'm pretty sure they were
only at the hidden bars if I remember.
I believe that's true, yeah. Because I think the other times
(39:02):
we just got, yeah, just like whiskey and Coke or rum and
Coke. Right.
There's one called B340 which I don't think we did 340.
Does that ring any bells for you?
Like the name does, but I can't think if it's something we
actually did or not. It will be 340 is named after
the most haunted room on the Queen Mary according to this
(39:27):
description. There's this one has it's very
dark and has a lot of people like jumping out at you, which I
don't really remember. So I don't think we did this
one. I don't it doesn't ring any
bells well. What about Feast?
Not the movie with Judah Friedlander.
(39:47):
And Jason? And Jason Hughes and MC Creamy.
This one sounds like it's right up our alley.
Gore filled rooms that give you the impression that whatever the
maniacal chef is cooking up might include pieces of the
staff. OK, I do vaguely remember like a
(40:08):
kitchen kind of scene. Yeah, it sounds familiar.
This maze gives you lots to lookat as limbs and bodies pile up
along your journey. Some of the best jump scares.
Again, the only jump scare that I encountered was the God damn
guy on the stilts. I mean that.
(40:29):
That's not to say they didn't try, sure, but it's like when
you when you go in anticipating jump scares, they don't really
scare you. And like I said, we've been at
this business for so long, we weusually know where they are.
Yeah. Which, yeah, you know, sometimes
it's a little disheartening to be like, yeah, there's a guy
back there, he's going to jump out at you in 3210.
(40:51):
There he is. But.
You know, it is what it is. It's still fun.
We still, we still make a show of it.
Yeah, it's. Like you got me, look at your
your, look at your spooky face there.
Is that a is that a hatchet you got?
Nice. Oh, so I'm I'm looking at their
(41:15):
website, the creepy cabanas. Those are where we sat down.
And they told us we couldn't sitthere, OK.
But this one, they have like a wooden table and like, you know,
satin chairs and shit. Yeah, that looks more fancy than
the one we went to. Yeah.
So maybe they've scaled up sincethen?
(41:37):
The Crypt New private event space.
OK, wait, that's this year. We're skipping ahead intrepid,
striking scenes of pure creepiness.
A cemetery that holds mourners that will never leave.
A Chapel holding a congregation dressed in white that does not
make you feel welcome. Some of the most interesting
rooms of any dark harbor maze are here, almost feeling like a
(41:59):
Museum of the macabre. This sounds vaguely familiar.
But it. Also kind of sounds like the
area out front with like the undead bride and stuff.
The last one is Rogue, loosely telling the story of a ship in
danger of capsizing. Excellent use of uneven terrain,
(42:21):
wide open spaces that contain water, and a stunning sequence
involving video production. The highlight of the entire
event. I remember one with a train.
Yeah. What was that?
I don't. I don't remember.
I was thinking about that earlier.
It's like there's something about a train.
Yeah, I definitely remember being in line and there being a
(42:44):
train like in the line. Yeah, but that's that's all I
can remember. Yeah, none of these ones that
are here describe, describe a train.
So I don't really know what thatwas.
I'm not sure. And, you know, it's like, I
think I'm, I'm for some reason I'm remembering this Goda
(43:05):
standing in line with us at that.
But I think I'm just combining memories from that in Universal
Studios. Yeah, he only went to Universal
with us. Right.
And wasn't he there like an hourbefore we finally got there?
I think he was, but he didn't goin.
He like waited a slide. Slide, yeah.
(43:26):
Because I remember us all going in together.
Well, I mean, you got Citywalk there.
I guess there's there's plenty to ask yourself with all.
Right. Well, that's our like half drunk
old man memories six years ago. Yeah, it's like the combination
of it being six years ago and the fact that we were drunk like
(43:47):
this is what we got for you. Yeah, plus we're also both in
our 40s now, so our memories arenot exactly the steel traps that
they used to be. Yeah, because my memory was
always so good. As for this year, some of the
things they have, we'll start with the mazes.
They have voodoo, the Queen's curse.
A ruthless priestess rises from a decayed Bayou to seize the
(44:10):
Queen Mary's power, commanding Loa, raising the dead and
marking anyone who stays too close.
She spent years stalking the ship, binding pirates to her
will and building an army to storm Long Beach.
Wind your way through potion shops, coffin factories and
poppet stuffed shacks before a brainstorm or barnstorming
finale where lightning crackles overhead and zombie sailors
(44:31):
surge below. That sounds very elaborate.
That does sound very elaborate. There's a lot going on there.
Yeah. And it's like where this has to
be when they're doing on on the dock and yeah, yeah, because
there's no way they can cram allthat shit into a maze that
they've put together on the ship.
(44:51):
Right Feast is back, but it's reimagined for 2025.
Step inside the back end of the ship's kitchen to witness the
origin story of the chef who began his career as a young,
ambitious and handsome butcher with his eye on the head chef
roll aboard the luxury cruise liner.
After chopping up flesh for years on the ship, the butcher
grew resentful towards the ungrateful first class
(45:12):
passengers who consumed his meticulously prepared meats.
Frustrated, the butcher takes recipe creation efforts into his
own bloody hands by adding a special ingredient that no one
can quite put their finger on. This is the final year of feast,
so if you want to experience Feast, time is running out.
Why would they reimagine it onlyto end it for?
(45:32):
For one year, yeah. Yeah, I mean, unless they did it
last year too, but. Which they probably did.
Looks like lullaby. And.
Looks like Lullaby is also back and Circus is also it seems like
back but it's called Big Top Terror now.
The Halloween Carnival is no ordinary circus.
(45:53):
It's a trap. It's a trap, a deadly labyrinth
of Jack O lanterns designed to ensnare the souls of the
innocent. The ringmaster, with his
hypnotic charisma and enchantingperformances, lures the
unsuspecting souls into this dark maze where doom awaits.
So there was no ringmaster when we went.
So that's a new twist. Wasn't there I because I know
(46:14):
that number one, a lot of the advertising, a lot of the
advertising had a clown, like a specific clown, like black and
white Harlequin makeup, big hair.
You know, I've got a, I've got acup that I brought home.
(46:34):
It was like a they're selling itone of the gift shops and it was
like $2.00 or something like fuck it, you know, it's a tiny
like little plastic cup with a bendy straw on it, but.
Yeah, I mean, maybe that was, maybe that was the ringmaster.
I don't know. Yeah, I, I don't, I don't recall
much more than that, but that's what I remember.
(46:57):
So it looks like B340 has been reimagined as Breakout Maximum
Security because it says the mystery behind what happened in
the infamous State Room B340 continues Samuel the Savage has
been arrested, dragged off the ship, and thrown into a prison
cell. The heavy iron door slams shut
behind him. But are the rusted shackles
inside the Seaside Village jail strong enough to contain the the
(47:19):
notorious criminal? Find out for yourself as you're
processed as the jail's newest inmate while alarms scream,
guards fall, and Samuel hunts. It's interesting because a lot
of these just from, I mean, going off the description, they
almost sound like escape rooms more than mazes because it
sounds like there's kind of thisinteractive element where if I
remember correctly, we just kindof walked through.
(47:42):
Yeah. I mean, aside from the actors
that kind of jump out of you, there wasn't.
Yeah, but there was no like, oh,now you're a part of this.
You know, you're under arrest now and you're part of this.
And yeah, none of that was. Part of it, the only like
interactive element that I can recall, is when you get taken in
one into one of the secret bars.Yeah, right.
(48:05):
There's also Infirmary. The wicked spirits of a sadistic
surgeon and his accomplice in life, his hetero life mate,
Graceful Gale, torment the torment the living with ghastly
echoes of their gruesome procedures.
Their path of destruction stretches from the first class
decks to the eerie depths deep inside the bowels of the Queen
Mary as they accost the living with their unrelenting rage.
(48:26):
So it sounds like this is the one now that takes you into the
secret bar down below. Right.
Well, the spectacle of Doctor Edwin Masters specialized
surgeries in the operating theater dazzle spectators, but
they have no idea what's happening below in the third
class corridors. Injustice will not stand for
long. Will the third class patients
overthrow this maniacal medic orwill he and GAIL continue their
(48:47):
gory game in this violent, disturbing and macabre
masquerade? Oh my God, so much alliteration.
There's also a haunted theatrical experience called
Lady Mabel. What do you think of Mabel?
The Summoning of Samuel, locatedon board the.
(49:10):
Summoning of Samuel. The summoning of Samuel located
on board the ship inside the Spirits of Dark Harbor.
I don't what is the Spirits of Dark Harbor?
Fucking ghosts. Yep.
Step into the eerie atmosphere of our summoning circle, where
the veil between the living and the dead grows thin.
(49:30):
Guided by our gifted, gifted psychic Lady Mabel, participants
will gather around a dimly lit table adorned with flickering
candles and artifacts from the ship herself.
As Lady Mabel begins the ritual,a chilling silence fills the
room, broken only by the soft, haunting melodies playing in the
background. With each whispered incantation,
the presence of a malevolent spirit draws closer.
(49:50):
The psychic summons forth the vengeful ghost of a notorious
murderer whose relentless soul seeks retribution.
That kind of reminds me of that that God.
What was that thing called that we did last year in in that
house? You know what I'm talking about.
Thing we did oh the the the haunted soiree or something
(50:11):
haunted. Soiree yeah, that's what that
kind of sounds like to me. A bit, a bit.
Then of course the two years agowas it 2 years ago because we.
Went two years ago to do Yeah, we went two years in a row, but
I asked you if you wanted to go last year, and both you and Max
are just kind of yeah. Oh, OK.
Yeah, I got it. I guess we're not going.
(50:31):
I got the emails this year too and I was just like.
Yeah, like I'm a sucker for vampires, so like the theme was
kind of intriguing, but it's like, I don't if it if I think
it was, it was fun because like it was like a group thing.
So it's like if, if you guys don't want to go, then yeah.
My biggest problem with it was both yours.
(50:51):
It was kind of just the same thing.
Yeah, I wish they'd do it in a different location.
If they do it in a different building, that would add a lot.
I'd like, I would like to see because there's this like, oh,
you have to go talk to these people and learn the secrets of
the haunted house and all this stuff.
And it's like, but why don't? Yeah, exactly like it
accomplished nothing. Right, because in the end you
(51:15):
get all of the same information. All will be revealed.
Yeah, and what? What is revealed is revealed no
matter what, even if you do nothing.
If there was. Like you may not quite
understand it as much I. Definitely.
Understand it. It'd be cool if it was like a
hidden bar or something that youhad to get these clues or
something, you know? Sure, sure.
(51:37):
Yeah. Like the secret speakeasies at
the Queen Mary Boom, Segway nailed it.
The way they describe it, secretspeakeasies are hidden inside
and around dark harbors, mazes, and attractions.
The location of these speakeasies is a secret, hence
the name. They don't have a sign and they
don't appear on the Dark Harbor map.
But if you'd like a clue about their whereabouts, we suggest
(51:57):
booking an appointment with LadyMabel.
Oh, that's a, that's a new twist, Lady Mabel, and we'll
give you information. Oh.
Access to Dark Harbor's secret speakeasies is limited to
persons possessing one of Lady Mabel's Mystic tokens or a valid
VIP badge. So you have to be AVIP or get
one of those wooden nickels to get into the hidden bars now,
(52:20):
right? They made them more exclusive.
Yeah. And I remember like, I think
there was only one bar where we had to get one of those things
to get in. Otherwise like there would be
roamers that would like invite you in or you'd find them by
accident. I don't recall needing something
(52:40):
specific for admission except for that one bar.
There was just some, just that one, and it was like, like I
said, you had to stop at the first bar and buy a drink to get
the wooden token. Right.
Oh, Spirits of Dark Harbor. Here it is.
It's a bar. And it's a bar.
It's an interactive theater. Yeah.
No, I got it. Yeah, because I've told you.
(53:04):
Because I explained it to you. Step aboard the Queen Mary,
learn about the ship's fascinating history, and grab a
cocktail or mocktail at the Spirits Bar while you explore
the real stories of paranormal experiences and ghost sightings
about those notoriously haunted ship and learn how they've
inspired the stories and characters of Dark Harbor.
Blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah.
Looks like there's a couple other bars.
There's the observation deck bar.
(53:26):
There's there's an axe throwing station now that definitely
wasn't there when we went. Combining axe throwing with
drinks seems like such a bad idea, but they're so popular and
I don't understand. True.
Should we go? I mean, yeah, I've been wanting
to go do axe throwing for fucking years.
(53:47):
Since I was a wee lad Pirates Plunder Shootout Test your aim
as you fend off swashbuckling foes and hunt for hidden
treasure as you prove your sharp, sharp shooting skills in
this action-packed pirate themedshooting game.
That definitely. Was not there either.
I don't think there were a lot of snipers back when pirates
(54:11):
were roaming the seven seas. That's true.
And then Bayou wasn't really a thing.
Yeah, and then Bayou Buccaneer S'mores indulge in the
priestess's blessed treats. If you dare, step aboard the
Voodoo priestess's cursed galleon and uncover her dark
obsession with the Queen Mary. Through glowing cymbals,
(54:32):
whispering spirits, and fire litrituals, you'll learn of the
offering she demands to appease the loa.
Your voyage ends with a mysticalS'mores kit, a sweet tribute
roasted over the Voodoo bayou's enchanted flames.
Why do I feel like I have a vague memory of having s'mores?
There was that. Do you have that?
Nope. All right.
(54:52):
I don't know what I'm thinking then maybe.
I remember not even really having food there, I was going.
To say I I do remember there notbeing any food because I
remember being hungry and being like, let me just get like a
sandwich or something like. Yeah, I think you can get like
carnival stuff like popcorn and popcorn, yeah.
Popcorn and popcorn. And like cotton candy and shit.
(55:13):
But aside from that, I don't think the OR wait, no, I take
that back because I'm now I'm remembering a little area where
there were like food trucks and shit.
Well, I mean as of this year they have a big top Smokehouse,
Voodoo fries, Diablo's tacos, Savage BBQ, Sinisters, kettle
corn churros, freak show, funnelchocolate covered strawberries,
(55:35):
Monster ice cream shakes, and Sonoran hot dogs and a Lotte.
Sounds like we got it taken careof.
Yeah, that sounds like some pretty good food, actually.
Fucking A. There's also more rides this
year in addition to the sinisterswings and Scary Mary's Ghost
Rider, which I don't think was there when we went but is
apparently a returning ride. We talked about the sinister
(55:58):
swings you get. I think most people who listen
to this know what the what theserides are.
Scary. Mary's Ghost.
Rider swings. It's a big, it's big fucking
swings. Dark Harbor's exclusive fully
restored carousel. Oh wait, was there a carousel?
I don't remember 1. Not to say there was, it wasn't,
but I don't recall. Yeah, God, I don't know.
(56:20):
There might have been, but I same thing.
OK, well, Scary Mary's Gill Strider is a carousel whoopie.
Do zero gravity take a stand against the Ringmaster spinning
chamber. No seats, no lap bars.
Just you. OK, it's a Gravitron and the
zipper, which I think most people who listen to this know
what a zipper is. I, I Yeah.
(56:41):
You know what a zipper is, right?
Zip zip up my pants. Yeah.
No, not like that. Not like that.
It says there's also some entertainment.
Lovecraft's DJ Kill Trina will perform at the Shipyard Maiden
Voyage launch party. Oh, there's sliders.
(57:03):
Yeah, there's lots of roaming scare actors.
There's sliders. Like I said, there's people on
stilts, other just generic characters who are all just, you
know, whose whole intention is to scare the shit out of you.
Right. Apparently the sliders do like
shows, Fire shows. I do remember a fire show.
(57:24):
That's a great picture. That's the train.
That's the train, yeah. Yeah, great for a audio medium.
Yeah, I still do the train. No.
OK, I'm not seeing it. Yeah, I knew there was a train.
(57:46):
Yeah, I remember there being a train.
I just couldn't remember any fucking details about it
otherwise other than there beinga train.
Yeah, no, none of the rides thatwe described said anything about
a train. So.
And there's apparently a percussion trio called Voodoo
Sound Company that performs and then sideshow performers and
drag Queens at the Halloween carnival.
(58:09):
Was there a barbershop quartet? Part of me wants to say no,
you're crazy, but part of me is thinking maybe there might have
been. I.
Haven't so I don't know. Vaguest recollection that there
is or there was. Yeah, it does not look like
there is this year, but that definitely seems feasible.
(58:36):
It does seem feasible. That seems like something that
might have happened. I'm looking at our grave plot
takes ballet pictures and like there's only like a few pictures
of this whole thing. Yeah, we didn't take a lot of
pictures of this, mostly because, you know, we were
inside the mazes for most of it.Yeah.
(58:58):
Were we not allowed to use cameras in there?
We probably weren't. OK.
I mean, they're they're like, even though we were taking
shitty pictures, I can't think of much of a reason, much of a
reason why we wouldn't at least try.
Yeah, just not being able to. Most of these ones are like
outside in line, stuff like that.
(59:21):
So. Yeah.
We might have just been having too good a time too.
That's true. There's a lot of I just OK,
there's a lot of videos. There's yeah, there's a couple
videos including me doing the Sherman Helmsley walk.
Right, and one with #gpp Dranks,LA.
(59:44):
Like, like we said at the top, this was probably my favorite
part of our trip. You know, it's not as big budget
as Disney or Universal. It's not as elaborate.
The mazes aren't as intricate asUniversal.
But also, maybe, you know, the crowds are a little less, so
(01:00:05):
it's a little more enjoyable. Like it was busy for sure.
Yeah, yeah, like I said earlier, there were lines for every maze.
Yeah, and we didn't. It was just a matter of, yeah,
it was a matter of finding like the shortest line.
It's like that's that's what youdid.
Right. But I had a great time with
this. Me too.
Yeah. I, I mean, I, we, we talked
(01:00:26):
every year since we went about doing it again.
Well, until they announced that they weren't doing it anymore.
But yeah, I mean, I'd love to doit again, but we'll see if that
ever happens. Yeah, we were both very excited
when it came back. And you know, like I said, if
(01:00:47):
maybe if you can't make it to one of the bigger parks, this
might be a good option. I don't know what the tickets
are running, but I assume they're probably not as much as
Universal and Disney. Yeah, it looks like as of right
now you can buy pre sale tickets, but it's saying save up
(01:01:09):
to $59 off per ticket. So the fact that they're at
least $59 makes me think that this has gone up in price quite
a bit. Probably, yeah.
And I mean, by the time people are listening to this, those
tickets will probably not be available anymore.
But. No, I, I pulled up, I went to
(01:01:30):
the Wayback Machine and pulled up the website from back in 2019
and I saw the tickets on, I think we went on Sunday, right?
That sounds possible. And tickets were like 30-4
bucks, so now they're talking about that.
(01:01:51):
Yeah. So yeah, I don't know.
I don't know what's going on, but things things are just too
fucking expensive. The rent's too damn high.
The rent is too damn high. Well, if you get a chance, I
recommend it. I think I can speak for Tony in
saying that he recommends it. For sure.
(01:02:13):
It's it's a great event to go to.
It's a lot of fun. And like I said, it's not going
to be a lot of rides. There are some rides there, but
they're mostly kind of carnival rides.
But you don't go for the rides, you go for the atmosphere.
You go for the mazes and you go for the hidden bars.
Yeah, and you know, we all know that there's so much trouble in
the LOBC, but you know, it's funto go to this anyway.
(01:02:36):
Sure. It's it's it's kind of hard
being Snoop DO double G. Yeah, especially when you say
dumb homophobic things, right? Man, that guy's just getting
fucking fucking railed now. Well, you know that'll happen.
Yeah, that will happen. All right, Tony, before we go,
(01:03:00):
why don't you tell people? I mean, we already promoted the
Grave Plot podcast. Listen to that every other
Wednesday opposite of this podcast.
It's me and Tony talking about horror movies.
It's going to be back by the time you're listening to this.
We're back from our hiatus. We're back in full force.
We're going to be doing Octoporama, where we do episodes
every single week with a different theme.
We talk about all the news that we want to talk about.
(01:03:23):
And two, we used to do all. No more than 5.
No more than five. We used to do all the news that
was fit to print and it was stupid.
Yeah, like the news section was fucking like 2 hours long.
Yeah, ridiculous. Now just the episodes themselves
are 2 1/2 to 3 hours long, but it's news sections, it's horror
(01:03:44):
movie reviews. It's a lot of fun.
