Karate is for everyone. So, join us each week for a 20 to 25 minute conversation on all types of subjects. We go from managing the distractions of daily life, through martial arts history and people, and common sense concepts to add to your self defense armor. Plus we have interviews and so much more. After spending over 40 years discussing life's challenges in a dojo, (both as a student and as a teacher) I decided it would be fun to share the conversations with everyone. And it is! We're having a great time with our guests each week thinking, talking and very importantly sharing a laugh or two along the way.
Welcome to the second episode on Armor. Today it is Samurai Armor. Of course Sensei Jackie, Sensei Landyn and I had so many tangents while discussing this subject. Mostly about weapons through the centuries. And of course we've done episodes on so many of the weapons. Let's start with the swords. Here's a link to our first episode on swords. (There were a few.):

And we...
We have fun discussing Armor, armor and more armor with Sensei Landyn. It was so much busier than I expected. How can you talk about armor, without mentioning the Gladiators. Here's the episode we did on Gladiators back in 2022:

We also mention swords. We did a few episodes on swords. One of my favorites is about the lost Masamune sword. Here's a link:
Back in 2022, Kim and Matthew came on and we discussed their love of the series Cobra Kai. It took 2 episodes! Now that the series has ended, we decided to have them on to wrap it up. If you're a fan and want to weigh in - get in touch.
Here are the first two episodes from 2022 if you'd like to listen. First Part 1:

and Part 2:
I explain in the episode, so no details are needed here, how we decided to look at some of the thoughts Master Kelljchian shared in his book 365 Days of the Warrior. We reviewed the Book back in 2021.Heres a link:

We're so lucky to have Hanshi Malanoski share some thoughts at the end of this show. Hanshi has been on quite a few times. Here is his first interview:
I say finally because, like many episode ideas, this one has been on my list since 2019 when we started recording. I'm so happy we took the time to learn what we could and share it. Ip Man was a strong and honorable practitioner.
Ip Man studied Wing Chun and we did an episode on the beginning of Wing Chun. Here's the link:

I'm tagging an episode on the Moral Code of t...

Hope you enjoy another letter episode that includes the kata (form, dance) Empi Ha and so much more. As usual we refer to many subjects that we've discussed on past episodes. For example: we talked about Kobudo weaponry. We did many episodes on this subject. Here is the first one:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/5484121
We touch on elements:

I received a copy of this poem in school - a long time ago. The other day, we were talking about it and decided to bring the conversation to the podcast. Landyn, Sensei Jackie and I laugh quite a bit. Hope you do too. This isn't our first episode on teaching. Here's one from 2023:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/13330690
Somehow we ended up talking about my favorite subject - self control. Here's the episode...
Fumio Demura is known for many things in Martial Arts. We did a biography of him back in 2020. Here's the link:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/5982394
What fun we had watching this movie, laughing and snacking. Somehow, in our review we mentioned Master Joe Hess. We've also done a biography on him:

And we also discussed Emil Farkus. You will see him if you watch ...
First off - an Uke is a Japanese word meaning partner in Karate training. Have I got your interest? This episode has stories from Hanshi Malanoski and some feedback from followers of Hanshi Ray Batlle's Facebook page. I thank them both.
We also tell a few stories of our own and maybe clear up some confusion for people who have just started training.
After you listen, get in touch and tell us your stories of good and bad partner...
We're joined by Kim to talk about another history of female warriors. This one is full of myths, legends and of course controversies. While I was writing these notes, I decided to look back at other episodes we've recorded female fighters in history. Our first one was back in 2020, where we were introduced to 2 Japanese women fighters. Here's the link:

We have two guests for this episode. I'm thankful to Sifu Jones from the UK who opens the show and to Shihan McKinnon who takes it home for us. Their input is amazing and appreciated. With Sifu Jones we talked about basics. That got us to thinking about the movie Budo. Since we did an episode on that, I'll tag it here:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/9007481
With Shihan we discussed everything from the importanc...
This episode is a listener request. Setting and maintaining boundaries, like so many things we've discussed on this show, is a lifelong responsibility (to yourself?).
When the request came through, the person didn't specify physical safety or internal challenges. So we tackled both.
However, we've talked about physical safety quite a few times. Here are some of the episodes. Our first episode was back in 2019! Here&ap...
Welcome to a second look at Wabi Sabi: a Japanese philosophy that I'm going to define too simply as a celebration of imperfection. In this episode we look at 3 different books about the subject. Our first look at this, a favorite subject, was back in 2020. My favorite memory of that recording was our guests, Sensei Tracey and Sensei Sam. Interested? Here's a link:

This is a moving episode. Don't miss it. We got the original idea for this episode from a new friend, Hanshi Tracey Seymour. We met her, and interviewed her, a few months ago. Here's the link, in case you missed it:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/16424997
Also, Audie Murphy is mentioned in this episode. It turns out he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Since we did an episode on him, I'll tag it her...
Regular listeners know how much we enjoy interviewing new friends. Hanshi Batlle felt like an old friend from the beginning of our conversation. Thank you Sir! I added the movie you mentioned, Five Fingers of Death, to our list of movies to watch and discuss. Thanks for the suggestion.
For our listeners that aren't familiar with which kata go with which system. No worries. The story still works. If you want more information ab...
Welcome to our ongoing look at WW2 warriors. Today our guest is Sensei Jay and the man we discuss is Pappy Boyington. The added drumming at the end is thanks to the Fushi Daiko Drummers. We interviewed them. Here’s the link:
https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/15446850
Also, we mention our episode on Audie Murphy. In case you missed that one, here’s a link:

We appreciate you...
Today, Landyn joins us for a variation on Letter Episodes. Are we 'over' the top? Listen to find out. At one point Landyn quotes the term "frog march" and none of us knew what it referred to....so I looked it up. Turns out it's just moving a person with their hands behind their back. We also mention our episode on Plan Your Work. In case you missed it. Here's a link:
What a great time we had when Paula and Eddy visited. A note as you listen: We HAVE tried MREs and we did put it on one of our social media - not sure if it was YouTube or Twitter though. We had a blast (since it wasn't a real emergency). The food was tolerable - not your mother's cooking, of course. Also, we'd love to hear your go bag hints and stories. Thanks for listening. Here's the link to support the show...
This week I took 4 words out of a fiction book I recently read and shared them with Sensei Jackie and Sensei Derek. We decided to look closely, laugh lots, and maybe push ourselves forward on our journeys. Join in and let us know what you think. Thanks for tuning in, sharing, and for all your support. Each week I remind you of our "support the show" link below. Hit it if you are so inclined. Thanks
