Speaker 1 (00:00):
Growth of young Jesus
.
If you have your Bible, kindlyturn to the Gospel of Luke,
chapter 2.
We're going to read around 42till the very end, looking at
the young life of Jesus, focusing on the growth of young
(00:22):
Jesus.
And growth is an essential partand parcel of life.
We all have to grow, we allhave to grow up.
For you, as young people, you're not always gonna remain
as young.
Life demands growth.
If we don't intentionally grow, life will enforce growth on us.
(00:46):
But let's see in the areas inwhich Jesus Christ, the Bible
says, grew in, and I believe, these two essential areas in our
lives, especially as youngpeople, we need to grow in them,
just as our Lord Jesus Christdid.
I'm going gonna read from verse42, luke, chapter 2.
(01:09):
Verse 42 it says and when hewas 12 years old.
So we see that Jesus Christ is ateenager.
That is the age ofdecision-making.
That is the also the age ofaccountability, especially in
the Jewish culture.
So when Jesus, the ages specifywhen Jesus was 12 years old,
something happened.
They went up to Jerusalemaccording to the custom of the
(01:32):
feast.
Usually when you're at that age, your parents will take you to
the temple, they will take youto Jerusalem to introduce you or
to get you familiar with thethings of God.
Jerusalem was like thereligious hub of Israel.
So we see here that the age ofJesus Christ is specified.
Jesus Christ is 12 years old, meaning that Jesus was in the
(01:53):
same boat as you and I are.
Jesus Christ was a young man.
So Jesus Christ understandswhat it means to be a young
person.
He understands the identitycrisis that young people go
through.
He understands the peerpressure that young people go
through.
He understands the identitycrisis that young people go
through.
He understands the peerpressure that young people go
through.
He understands the chaos, thealmost the chemical reactions in
young people.
So that is why Jesus Christ canrelate with you guys as a young
(02:15):
person.
So he was a boy under thegovernance and the guidance of
his parents.
His parents took him toJerusalem.
So, as young as we are 12, 15,16, you're still under your
parental rule, so you have tolisten to your parents.
(02:35):
Because Jesus Christ did theBible says in Luke 2, verse 40
now 40 now and the child grewand became strong in spirit,
filled with wisdom, and thegrace of God was upon him.
I'm going to jump to Luke, chapter 2, verse 52, because of
time, and it says and Jesusincreased in wisdom, stature and
(02:55):
in favor with God and men.
The focus really is on growth, like I said.
So there are growth stages ofthe boy Jesus, focusing on these
three areas Number one, hisphysical growth.
Number two, his spiritualgrowth.
Number three, his mental growth.
Young people these are the threeessential areas that you and I
(03:16):
will need to grow in.
We need to grow physically, weneed to grow spiritually, we
need to grow mentally.
Growing physically is automaticbecause your natural human body
does it by itself, without yourconsent, without your
permission.
However, for you to growmentally, you have to be
intentional.
(03:37):
For you to grow mentally, youhave to learn, and then for you
to also grow spiritually, it hasto be intentional, and it also
takes dedication, time andeffort.
So spiritual growth and mentalgrowth demands effort from your
end.
That is not something that isgoing to initiate itself.
(03:58):
Whereas physical growthinitiates itself, your body
enlarges as you get older, butwhen it comes to that spiritual
and the mental growth it demandsyou put in the work, you invest
your time, your resources, forexample, coming for Bible study,
for example, attending themorning prayer sessions.
(04:18):
So let's look at the physicalgrowth of Jesus.
We can find that in Luke, chapter 2, verse 4.
The Bible says and the childgrew.
And the child grew, meaningthat Jesus was once a child.
Now Jesus have passed the ageof a child into a boyhood.
You're not always going to be achild, you're not always going
to be under your mom's roof, you're not always going to be
(04:40):
mama's boy or daddy's girl.
You have to grow up from achild to a young lady, to a
young man.
It's a process, life is agrowth process.
Jesus Christ grew as a childinto a boy, at this particular
account, at the age of 12.
And if we go down to Luke, chapter 2, verse 52, the Bible
(05:01):
says and Jesus increased instature.
That word stature means hisphysicality, his body
enlargement.
Physical growth is somethingthat we see in our human
development, that every humanbeing has to grow up.
If you're not growingphysically, then something is
wrong with you when it comes tohealth.
But every human beingautomatically grows physically.
(05:26):
Let's look at the spiritualgrowth, which is really the
emphasis, especially when itcomes to young people.
Yes, we can grow physically,it's natural, it happens
automatically.
But when it comes to spiritualgrowth, you have to decide to
want to grow in faith, you haveto decide.
To want to grow in faith, youhave to decide you want to grow
(05:47):
in your relationship with God.
Just because you're in churchdoes not mean that you're
growing.
Just because you anger aroundChristians does not mean that
you're growing.
Just because your mom is apastor does not mean that you're
growing.
Look at the spiritual growth ofJesus.
That is in Luke, chapter 2,verse 40.
And the child grew.
(06:14):
That is the physical growth theBible says.
And became strong in spirit andbecame, meaning that for you to
become.
It's a process.
We are not just human doings.
We are human beings.
Just because you do somethingdoesn't mean you're growing.
What makes you grow is that youbecoming.
When you're becoming, changesoccur, transformation takes
(06:36):
place.
Jesus became meaning that inthe process it became what?
Strong in spirit.
So we see the spiritual growthof Jesus.
He became so he was spirituallysensitive.
(06:59):
To be strong in the spirit, meaning that you know the things
of the spirit, you understandthe things of the spirit, you
fear the things of the spirit.
When we talk about the thingsof the spirit, it pertains the
things of God, things that arewritten in the Bible, things
that reference God.
(07:20):
So Jesus Christ became strongin the spirit.
He was sensitive in the spirit.
He was also matured in thespirit to become strong.
When I look up that word becomes, became strong in the spirit.
It's a Greek word.
It means to actually become, tohave like a force, like an
inner being, a character, likethe non-material faculty.
(07:44):
So meaning that when we saythat you are strong in the
spirit, it also means that youhave strong character, moral
character, strong character,moral character.
That is why the fruit of theSpirit entails characteristics
such as love, kindness,gentleness, patience.
(08:05):
So when we talk about you arein the Spirit, not only you
possessing power, but you alsopossess moral qualities.
So Jesus became strong in spiritcan also mean Jesus was a man
of morality.
He was a young man who hadvalues.
He was a young man who hadvirtues.
(08:26):
He was a young man who walkedin righteousness.
So, young people, spiritualgrowth entails you embracing,
setting certain standards amongyour friends, having standards
for yourself, having boundariesfor yourself where you have to
(08:50):
go, not everything you have todo.
You are spiritually inclinedwith the things of God.
You fear God, but you have tomake the effort to grow
spiritually.
Another example of somebody whowas young that the Bible says
that this person was also strongin the spirit was John the
(09:12):
Baptist.
And this phrase strong in thespirit was John the Baptist, and
and and and these phrase strongin the spirit was actually
mentioned to when John and Jesuswere young.
So spiritual maturity, one ofGod, spiritual sensitivity, it's
not about age.
There are people who are 12years old, who are matured, who
(09:36):
have character, who havestandards, who have good
reputation, spiritual discipline.
The Bible says for John theBaptist that so the child grew
and became strong in spirit.
Now let's look at the mentalgrowth of Jesus, three essential
(09:58):
areas that we need to grow in.
Look what it says in Luke, chapter 2, verse 40.
And the child grew and becamestrong in spirit, filled with
wisdom.
Filled with wisdom, wow.
Filled with wisdom.
(10:19):
Filled with wisdom, wow.
And now let's jump to luke,chapter 2, verse 52.
The bible says jesus increase inwisdom, wow, filled in wisdom,
and increase in wisdom.
What does that mean?
Filled?
When you're filled, it's likeyou pouring water in a cup or in
(10:43):
a bottle and sometimes you candetermine if you want that water
to be completely full.
But the Bible says that Jesuswas filled with wisdom.
He was filled with wisdom andthe Bible also state that Jesus
(11:06):
increased with wisdom.
So if Jesus was filled withwisdom, that means that Jesus
was already full with wisdom.
But that was not enough.
Jesus is the continuous learner, constantly learning as a human
being, again, as God, he's thefullness of wisdom.
As God, he knows everything.
(11:28):
As God, it doesn't need tolearn.
But as a human being, eventhough Jesus is filled with
wisdom.
In Luke, chapter 2, verse 52,the Bible says Jesus increased.
When you increase, you grow.
When you increase, you expand.
When you increase, you enlarge.
So what we are seeing here, jesus was not satisfied with the
(11:54):
level of wisdom he had.
Jesus was determined tocontinue to learn.
You as young people yes, you'rein school.
I know you're reading yourbooks, you're doing your
assignments, but formaleducation is not the end of
(12:14):
learning.
Formal education is not the endof learning.
Formal education is not the endof learning.
There's a saying by my favoritemental, jim Rohn, state that
formal education can make you aliving, which is when you finish
primary school, high schoolschool, you go to college, you
go to university.
(12:34):
They will teach you, they willprepare you, they will equip you
for you to be employed, workingfor other people.
But this man state thatinformal education informal
education, like I said, it's youtaking the time, the effort and
the resources to invest in yourknowledge, to invest in your
(12:55):
knowledge, to invest in yourskill set in whatever area that
you're interested in.
So when you acquire yourinformal education by reading
books, attending workshops, listening to podcasts on YouTube
, getting knowledge, thatinformal education will make you
(13:15):
a fortune.
It will make you a fortune.
It will make you a fortune.
So we, as young people, we needto be long life students,
because you can never exhaustthe materials of life.
Life is mysterious.
(13:37):
There's always something foryou to learn.
When I was your age I'm stillyoung sometimes I think that I
know it all, but when lifehumbles you to tell you that you
know what, you have no clue howto manage your finances.
You have no clue about whatlove is.
You have no clue how to manageyour finances.
You have no clue about whatlove is.
You have no idea about family.
(13:59):
You have no clue about being ina professional setting.
So what do you have to do?
You have to be humble to learn.
So we see that the mental growthof the young Jesus focuses on
his mental capacity.
Focuses on his mental capacity.
(14:22):
I have to learn, I have toacquire knowledge.
But the knowledge that Jesuswas acquiring was from the word
of God.
Young people, some of you arevery smart, very smart in your
academic, but are youintelligent?
Are you smart enough in thethings of God?
Are you proficient in the Wordof God?
(14:43):
Can you quote a Bible verse?
That is the best knowledge youcan get the knowledge from the
Word of God.
Amen.
So Jesus was filled with wisdomand Jesus increased in wisdom.
Jesus was not satisfied.
He was constantly learning,constantly learning.
(15:03):
But now look what it says.
Just to clarify that the Biblesays when Jesus was a boy, he
was filled with wisdom,increasing wisdom.
Now, when Jesus was an adult, look what Paul says about him in
first Corinthians, chapter 1,verse 30.
But of him you are in ChristJesus, who became for us wisdom,
(15:28):
wisdom from God, who became, who became?
Even though Jesus had the spiritof wisdom, jesus had to go
through the human process tobecome the wisdom of God.
Just because you are gifted, you have to own your craft.
(15:48):
If you're a singer, you havethe seed, you have the raw
material of singing, but youhave to own your craft.
If you're a singer, you havethe seed, you have the raw
material of singing, but youhave to own your craft, you have
to cultivate your craft, youhave to develop your craft so
you can become excellent in whatyou're doing.
That is the case of Jesus.
For him to be called the wisdomof God, he had to become.
(16:09):
Look what it says in verse 24,first Corinthians, chapter 1,
verse 24, for Paul is stillemphasizing that.
But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, christ is
the power of God and the wisdomof God.
So, young people, for JesusChrist to have such title
started when he was young, forhim to be considered, for him to
(16:35):
be recognized, for him to becalled the power of God and the
wisdom of God.
Jesus started learning at theage of 12 in the temple, when he
continued to read.
He was interested in learningColossians, chapter 2, verse 2
to 3.
Colossians, chapter 2, verse 2,to read.
He was interested in learningColossians, chapter 2, verse 2
to 3.
Colossians, chapter 2, verse 2to 3.
Look what it says that theirhearts may be encouraged, being
(17:00):
knit together in love andattaining to all riches of the
full assurance of understanding.
Wow, this is Paul speaking tous as believers to the knowledge
of the mystery of God, both ofthe Father and of Christ, in
whom are eating all thetreasures of wisdom and
(17:23):
knowledge, all the treasure ofwisdom and knowledge.
When you read the book ofProverbs, one of the emphasis
from the author Solomon is inall that you're getting, get
wisdom, get understanding thatwisdom is the principal thing.
If Jesus Christ himself acquirewisdom, who are you, young man?
(17:43):
Who are you, young woman?
Not to pursue wisdom, not topursue wisdom, not to pursue
knowledge About life, abouteverything that is essential to
you.
Pursue knowledge in yourfinances.
Pursue knowledge how to relatewith people.
Pursue knowledge how to serveGod.
Pursue knowledge.
And if you don't have wisdom, you don't have knowledge.
(18:10):
The Bible says ask God.
God will freely give it to you, because in him are all the
hidden treasures of wisdom andknowledge that we need to live
an effective life.
Finally, the Bible says that theglory of the young people is
(18:35):
your strength and the glory ofthe old is your wisdom.
Wisdom is not just for theolder people.
Wisdom is not just for yourparents.
God wants you to acquire wisdom.
Use your strength to learn toacquire wisdom.
Use your strength to learn.
Don't use your strength toparty.
Don't use your strength togossip.
(18:56):
Don't use your strength tobecome contentious.
Use your strength to learn.
Use your strength to pursuewisdom.
Use your strength to becomestrong in the spirit.
Wisdom is strength.
Being in the spirit is strength.
(19:17):
So, young people, if you wantto be strong, have wisdom.
If you want to be strong, be inthe spirit.
As it says in Proverbs, chapter24, verse 5, a wise man is
strong.
Yes, this is the theme ofstrength.
Your strength is not just yourphysical muscle.
(19:40):
Your strength can also be inyou getting wisdom, because the
Bible says a wise man is strong.
When you are a wise woman or awise young man, you are strong,
you are able to navigate life.
And the bible says in ephesians, chapter 3, verse 16 he will
(20:01):
grant you, according to theriches of his glory, to be
strengthened, to be strengthenedwith might through his spirit
in the inner man.
So, if you want to be strong,be in the spirit.
These are two powerful requests.
(20:22):
If there's anything you'regoing to get in this life that
we have heard today, especiallyif you're a young man, a young
woman.
If you want to be strong inlife, pursue wisdom.
If you want to be strong inlife be in the spirit.
Then in Jeremiah, abba saysthus says the Lord let not the
wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in
(20:45):
his might.
Nor let the rich man glory inhis riches, but let him glory,
glory in his that he.
Nor let the rich man glory inhis riches, but let him glory in
his that he understands andknows me.
Wow.
So I have said that you need toacquire wisdom and you need to
be in the spirit.
But sometimes, when God makesyou a wise man or a wise young
woman, or strong in the spirit, you can preach, you can sing.
(21:09):
Sometimes we can become cocky,we can become proud.
So god is not making you strongby giving you wisdom.
God is not making you strong byallowing you to be in the
spirit just for a show, just foryou to boss people around.
No, that is why god is saying Iwant you to be humble.
I don't want you to boastbecause you're the wisest woman
(21:32):
in class.
I don't want you to boastbecause you're the wisest young
man among your friends.
I don't want you to boastbecause you're the most
spiritual person.
No, If you are going to boast, boast that you know God and God
knows you.
If you are going to be proud,be proud of God, be proud that
you know God, be proud of hisattributes.
(21:55):
And the Bible says in Zechariah, chapter 4, verse 6,.
So he answered and said to methis is the word of the Lord to
Zerubbabel.
Not by might, not by power, butby my spirit, says the Lord.
Like I said, strength can befound when you walk in the
spirit.
Strength can be found when youare led by the spirit.
(22:15):
Finally, jesus embraced Jesusbecause Jesus is the fullness of
wisdom, jesus is the wisdom ofGod and Jesus is the power of
God.
Really, to summarize what I'vesaid, if you want to have these
two essential attributes in life, especially for you as a young
(22:38):
man and as a young woman, embrace Jesus, because Jesus is
going to be your strength, jesusis going to be your wisdom.
