Maceo Z. Keeling (00:22):
Hello
listeners and welcome to Wise
Black Pearls.
Today's conversation is aboutkeeping it real, keeping it 100.
The conversations that we'reabout to have today are all
about receipts.
Very often, we put ourselvesout there to know a certain
thing or to understand a certainthing, because we want to
appear to be informed or up ongame, when the reality is you're
(00:47):
being gamed.
And so today I'm going to layout a couple of ways that you
can verify and validate yourposition and how you can really
produce receipts for when youwant to move forward in a
conversation, in an activity orjust within your own personal
desires and drives and goals.
(01:09):
And there are a couple ofphrases that we use that are
clear indications whether we arereal or not.
So buckle your seatbelts andlet's have the conversation
Right now.
One of the top statements that Ihear among people across age
groups, across races, acrossgender preferences is the word
(01:34):
I'm on Now.
Unless you come from where Icome from, you don't really know
exactly what I mean when I say,well, I'm on and I'm on and I'm
on and I'm a do.
Or the sentence is I'm on andI'm on and I'm on and I'm going
to do.
Or the sentence is I'm going to, I'm going to, is the killer of
dreams, is the killer ofprogress, is the killer of
activity.
(01:54):
Because what that says in clearterms out of your own mouth is
that I haven't done it yet.
I haven't done it yet.
I haven't initiated the actionthat I need to move forward to
(02:16):
get from where I am to someplaceelse.
So my book is a perfect example.
I've been saying oh man, I'mgoing to write a book, I'm on,
I'm on, I'm not moving forwardwith action.
Another sentence that we hearI'm about to.
Yeah, man, I'm about to blow up, I'm about to go for it, I'm
about to set it off, I'm aboutto start it, I'm about to get
(02:39):
this money, I'm about to makethis move, I'm about to, I'm
about to.
With the energy that you have totalk about what you're about to
do, you have the opportunity touse that breath to be about
what you're talking about.
And when I say be about it, Imean let the thing that you're
(03:03):
talking about be the thing thatpeople see in you, or let it be
the thing that drives you in themorning, let it be the thing
that keeps you up at night, because you want it so badly, so
emphatically, that you canhardly sleep.
Let me ask you a question howare you able to sleep if you
(03:29):
know you're going to wake upbroke?
How are you able to talk aboutwhat you're going to do when you
have no evidence withinyourself that you've started the
process?
I used to be a host on a radioshow called the Conscious Call
in Asheville, north Carolina, and my byline was you don't have
(03:53):
to be great to get started, butyou do have to get started to
become great.
It's important that you take thevery first step, lean into it
slightly so that you can put thenext foot, the trail foot,
right in front of that, lead offfoot and move forward.
(04:16):
I would be remiss if I didn'tacknowledge that there's time
involved and that time is alwaysthe same time.
That's right now.
Take a step right now.
Put one foot in front of theother, lean in and stay leaning
(04:38):
in to keep your movement ormomentum going in the direction
that you would have it go.
Now.
It probably sounds like I'mbeating you up.
It maybe sounds like I'mcalling you out on your stuff.
I am.
I absolutely am.
(05:00):
I'm telling you the truthbecause I know where we find
ourselves.
I'm going to do this, I amabout to do this, I'm all do
this, I'm all have that.
Well, here are a few phrasesthat are truly dream killers.
(05:22):
You may not even recognize them.
The first one is I'm going to.
In my neighborhood we say, well, I'm oh, I'm oh, I'm oh, I'm oh
, okay, I'm going to dosomething.
Well, that suggests that youhaven't done it yet or you are
not doing it now, which meansyou are wasting the most
(05:44):
precious commodity we have, which is right now the best time
to do.
Anything that is worthwhilethat will benefit you is to do
it right now.
And for those of you who don'tspeak, ebonics, I'm about to do,
I'm about to do.
(06:05):
If you are about to dosomething, once again, it means
you have not begun the process.
You have not taken the stepsthat are required to be in
action right now.
The only time when you havepower over a thing is right now,
(06:26):
the next thing I'm gettingready to in my own life.
I don't know if I promised,threatened or otherwise just
flat out lied to myself when Isaid I'm going to write a book.
(06:47):
Or maybe I said I'm gettingready to write a book.
We, myself included, can spendan entire life getting ready and
never putting ink to paper, never going out for that tryout,
(07:13):
never auditioning for that part, never stepping into the arena
that Theodore Roosevelt talksabout at Sorbonne when he says
it's not the critic who matters, but the man who is actually in
the arena.
We got to quit playing.
(07:34):
We got to quit playing and getin the arena.
You know, we have all theseconversations about what a real
man is and how to be hard andhow to show up.
Walking around mean muggingeach other, when the reality is
we're hiding behind a facade offear and ignorance, anxiety
(08:04):
disguised as fear.
Then you can break through andbreak free from the shackles
that keep you bound up.
Of course, we all walk intrauma, we all walk in anxiety,
we all find ourselves feelingpowerless from time to time, but
(08:27):
responsibility falls squarelyon us.
We must be able to respond tothe demands of the day and if we
don't, we have no one else toblame, because no one can take
away your ability to say yes toyourself, to look yourself in
(08:51):
the mirror and say let's get iton.
And when I say let's get it on,I'm talking about the spiritual
being who is having a humanexperience and having an
emotional crisis.
No one can take that from you.
No one can address that for you.
You cannot do it alone.
(09:15):
You cannot do it alone becausewe are incarcerated by that
which we know and that which wedo not know.
We cannot activate our poweruntil we understand that we have
power.
We must become aware of ourpower.
(09:37):
It doesn't mean that you have tostep on somebody in order to
get where you're going.
It simply means you will try tofront and we all know there's
(10:10):
no future to your front assomeone who exudes confidence
but has no competence andtherefore cannot produce the
receipts, and without thereceipts, without the
credibility and without theevidence, then you're just
(10:37):
arrogant.
Then you're just arrogant.
You have a false and inaccurateassessment of who you are.
And even if we discover thatthe end that we anticipated is
not the one that we were hopingfor, we are still far better for
(10:58):
the knowledge, for theexperience, which gives us the
wisdom to press forward and totry something else.
How many of us will walktowards a goal, bump our head
against the goal and stay inthat place and continue to bang
(11:18):
our head against the wall?
If you look around at thepeople who are close to you.
Many of us do exactly that samething.
We run into a block and weeither A stop, in which case we
(11:39):
are not perfected in our efforts, or B continue to do the same
thing over and over and over andover, to sheer exhaustion, or
we change lanes, we change lanes.
We counterfeit all of thatlearning, all of that experience
(12:03):
, all of that insight, all ofthat success because we
successfully discovered whatdidn't work and we traded for
something untested, untried, andwe trade it for something
(12:30):
untested, untried and that wehave no experience in.
If you want to know how todevelop an attitude that will
get you the amplitude and thealtitude that you're looking for
, it begins with attitude.
It begins with decisions likeDiana Nyad, the 64-year-old
swimmer who swam from Cuba toFlorida.
(12:53):
Her slogan, her saying, is finda way.
That's just one example.
Find a way, start out with adecision that cuts you off from
(13:16):
any possibility of failure.
And if Winston Churchill saidthat success is stumbling from
failure to failure without lossof enthusiasm, then I'm going to
say to you that success is tostay leaning on the door.
(13:36):
If you find yourself in frontof a door that is closed and
locked, lean on it, kick on it,try to pick the lock, stay
grinding, stay leaning againstthe door.
Because just the physical lawsof this human experience will
(14:04):
show you that eventually, withthat consistent, unwavering
pressure on that closed door, the hinges will loosen, the door
will begin to rattle, the doorwill begin to rattle, the knob
(14:27):
will begin to to give a littleuntil ultimately, that door, if
it doesn't open when you knockon it, if you lean on it, kick
on it and against it, it willeventually come off the hinges.
(14:48):
I'm talking about the challenges, the vicissitudes, the setbacks
that occur in life day to day.
In life Day to day, we can andwe will Press hard Until we push
(15:09):
through that closed door.
That's what I'm talking about.
Young men today Talk aboutbeing hard.
Being hard Is staying leaningon that door.
Being hard is a never quitattitude.
(15:30):
Being hard is I won't give up.
Being hard is knowing that ifyou will not quit, nothing can
stop you, because our greatestweapon, our greatest tool, our
greatest asset has always beenthat we are creatives.
(15:54):
There are alternative ways to doa thing.
The old people say there's morethan one way to skin a cat.
In the Bible there was a catthat was trying to push his way
into a church somewhere.
I don't know the details fully, but I do know he was trying to
get up in a room where Jesus wasand there was no room for him
(16:19):
to get in through any of thedoors, so he cut a hole in the
roof.
It doesn't matter if you'reChristian, it doesn't matter if
you believe in God, but in thisparticular case, the action
proves that creativity combinedwith action will get you in the
(16:47):
mix, which brings me to action.
One of the major setbacks thatwe experience as we move through
our life is we try to takeaction before we have
understanding.
It's almost like giving a kid abook of matches in his left
(17:11):
hand and a stick of dynamite inhis right hand and giving him no
instruction.
Given him no instruction, youcan imagine that the likelihood
is if he has enough informationto know that he can light a
match and figures out that hecan light the dynamite, there's
(17:32):
a very high probability thathe's going to blow himself up.
An example of blowing yourselfup is making you move too soon,
trying to take action before youhave information.
Information cured in your mindcan become knowledge.
(17:55):
Knowledge is not power.
The proper application ofknowledge can be powerful, but
if you do not understand how theproper application of knowledge
can be powerful, then you lackthe tools that you need to be
(18:23):
effective.
Once you become clear about itsapplication and you have a
clear understanding of a thing, then you need to practice the
thing.
And even though you haveinformation, good knowledge, you
understand its application, youknow how it works and you are
(18:47):
able to use it in the way thatit was intended, then, with
experience, you can now becomewise.
See, wisdom is not cheap.
Information cured in your mindbecomes knowledge.
(19:13):
Understanding the application ofknowledge can be powerful.
Understanding the power ofapplying your knowledge can give
you understanding.
(19:34):
Understanding coupled withpractice that includes stumbling
through failure to failure withno loss of enthusiasm will give
you experience, and thatexperience will give you wisdom,
(19:57):
leaving the shores of ignoranceand taking the great leap into
the ocean of learning.
You can do that by reading abook.
You can do that by making a newfriend.
You can do that by going aplace.
You can do that by traveling toa place that you've never
(20:19):
traveled to.
I'm not talking about traversingoceans and taking flights all
over the globe, although Iencourage it greatly.
I'm talking about walking offthe block and going to a place
that you've never been, whereyou don't know anyone, because
(20:41):
the chances are extremely likelyyou're going to hear something
you've never heard, you're goingto see something you've never
seen and you'll learn somethingthat you've never been exposed
to.
Just imagine that your mind islike a big jar and the
information that you have in itis half full.
(21:04):
There are things that you cando to fill up that jar until it
overflows, or it has a lid on itthat won't allow you to put
anything more into it.
We call that being closed-minded, and the biggest indication of
someone who is closed-minded istwo simple words.
(21:29):
I know, I know when the wordsthat come out of a person's
mouth always seems to begin with, I know, already know that, or
that ain't nothing new.
That is an indication that youare in the wrong room.
(21:50):
If you are the smartest personin the room, you are absolutely
and unequivocally in the wrongroom.
And I say that because ifyou're in the room where you
have the greatest fund ofknowledge, then you do not have
room for additional knowledge, for additional learning, for a
(22:12):
different opinion, even anopposing opinion, which could
drive you into the rigorousreview of your own thoughts with
this new information, movingyou to a place of enlightenment.
Even the word enlightenmentmeans that you're going
(22:34):
someplace where the light is onand you were moved, nudged,
kicked, shoved, compelled andotherwise lifted from a place of
darkness to a place where thereis an additional light.
(22:55):
This is how we gain awareness, and if we are not aware of the
opportunities that are availableto us, we certainly cannot
access them.
To all my listeners, I want tothank you for chopping it up
(23:19):
with me today staying informed, looking at ways that you can
improve your life through takingaction, but taking the time to
get understanding before youtake those actions.
I hope that you'll listen, going forward, follow the series
that I have coming up regardingaccess and opportunities,
(23:40):
access and opportunities andthat you will share this link,
subscribe for premium contentand follow the show, as all of
my intentions are to lift upempower and to give you the
encouragement that you need totake that first step that will
(24:05):

come.
