In Part 2 of our 3-Part Series, we hear from Dawn Lohr, who bravely shares the heart-wrenching story of her son’s struggle with suicidal ideation and depression following a traumatic brain injury. Diagnosed with severe mental health issues, Dawn and her family tirelessly sought treatment and answers, battling through multiple suicide attempts. Tragically, her son’s journey ended in suicide.
With immense courage, Dawn highlights the critical need for a deeper understanding of brain and mental health, and advocates for improved treatment programs to support those in similar situations. Suicide remains a leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming over 48,000 lives in 2021. It was the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-14 and 25-34. The number of suicides in the U.S. nearly doubled the number of homicides in 2021, and the suicide rate among males was four times higher than that among females.
