Mouth, where we explore the
fascinating connection betweenyour oral health and your
overall well-being.
Here's your host, dr AlexSemide.
Hello, hello and welcomeeveryone to the inaugural
episode of Word of Mouth.
I'm your co-host, jeremy Wolf, and I'm here joined by your host
(00:25):
, dr Alex Semide.
How you doing, brother?
Dr. Alex (00:29):
How's it going?
Jeremy Wolf (00:29):
Jeremy, it is going
really, really well, getting
ready for the holiday season.
I'm in that mood, in thatholiday spirit, looking forward
to some time off for the family, some vacation time, absolutely.
Dr. Alex (00:43):
How far through the
list are you with holiday
shopping?
Jeremy Wolf (00:46):
Wait, there's a
list I'm supposed to be using
for holiday shopping.
All I know is my daughter gaveme a list of like 30 to 40 items
, so we'll see where that goes.
That's helpful.
I thought we'd start off bykind of talking a little bit
about our backgrounds right, what we do and I'd like you to
(01:06):
start if you could telleverybody a little bit about
what you do.
I know you're a dentist bytrade and you do a lot of stuff
and you're all about educatingthe community.
You are the proud owner andpurveyor of Semide Dental, so
please tell us a little bitabout Semide Dental.
Dr. Alex (01:24):
Yeah, no, absolutely.
First of all, I'm super excitedto be here today and to be
doing this podcast.
Man, I'm very much lookingforward to having some really
interesting conversations aboutjust the intersection between
dentistry and overall health.
It's a really interesting fieldthat we're learning a lot about
(01:46):
and the evolution of thescience of it all is really fast
.
It's something that I'm verypassionate about and I hope to
have a lot of really interestingconversations about that.
Like you said, I am a dentist.
I'm a local South Florida kid, only son to two Cuban immigrant
(02:08):
parents, so grew up with thatimmigrant mentality where my
parents didn't tell me, hey, youneed to be a dentist or a
doctor or a lawyer, but theymaybe insinuated it strongly at
times.
Yeah, right now I am a proudfather of two little kids, five
(02:29):
and one, my son and my daughter, which are my absolute favorite
people in this world.
Jeremy Wolf (02:36):
I miss those times,
brother.
It's so cliche when you sayvalue the time because it goes
by so quickly, but minor nine or11, and it feels like a
lifetime ago when they werelittle and it's just a blur.
Dr. Alex (02:49):
It really is, man.
Really I appreciate it a lotmore now with Isabel, with my
second one.
Just how quickly that allpassed with my son.
With her it's almost like beingmore focused on being mindful
to enjoy every single littlestage of the journey, because
(03:13):
it's an incredible process to bea part of.
Jeremy Wolf (03:16):
Life is a beautiful
thing.
Dr. Alex (03:17):
It really is.
It really is.
Jeremy Wolf (03:20):
I've been married
to my wife.
Dr. Alex (03:21):
Kate for 12 years
roughly 12 amazing years.
She is absolutely my best friend.
I am the luckiest guy in theworld to have met her and to
have convinced her to start alife with me.
Yeah, when I'm on the clock, soto speak.
(03:46):
I'm a practicing dentist inDavy Florida and, like you said,
really my passion in dentistryis to educate From my patients.
We have an education-centeredpractice where we want to
empower people to make decisionsregarding their health.
(04:08):
Right, I feel like too often, not only in dentistry but
medicine in general, it's thissort of like you know, mechanic
approach you show up, theydiagnose the problem, kind of
hand you a bill, like hey, thisis what it's gonna cost to fix
it, and you're left like, okay,I mean, you seem trustworthy,
let's start, and that just thatkind of sucks right.
(04:32):
Like we set out to do thingsdifferent and this podcast was
really kind of born out of thatphilosophy right To have
conversations with people toeducate about what conditions
and options and possibilitieslook like.
So when we met and you know youdo what you do we thought it
(04:55):
was a great opportunity to kindof join forces and bring the
message out to the world.
Jeremy Wolf (05:03):
Yeah, absolutely.
And a couple of things I wantedto touch on personal to me.
You know my daughter has someissues with her mouth,
orthodontic issues.
She actually recently had toget some surgery done and I was
looking into getting thesetreatments and part of what she
needed was outside your purviewbut you had us come in and, like
(05:25):
you said, that experience wasall about.
I mean, you could really seethe care, the passion that you
had, the relation you had withthe patient.
You really took time out ofyour day and your schedule, at
no cost to me, to sit down andreally give me your honest
feedback about, as if mydaughter was your daughter, and
it helped guide me to thedecision that I ultimately made
(05:47):
and we ended up getting theextractions done and we're
moving forward with everything.
So you really do embody thatessence of building
relationships with really.
I mean I mean that for my heartbecause this is personal to me.
Yeah, definitely.
So then I did want to say yeahabout how we kind of linked up
with the idea of doing thepodcast.
(06:07):
Kind of goes back to my story.
I started a year and a half agoon the local publisher.
As you know, I published Coopercity living magazine, I do some
stuff in the digital sphere.
Earlier this year in April, Istarted the good neighbor
podcast platform here in Coopercity, which was an idea born out
of a colleague of mine duringCOVID times.
(06:27):
He was another publisher on theWest coast of Florida and he
came up with this idea of hey,why don't I grant the platform
to local business owners at atime when everybody was on
lockdown during pandemic, sothey can come on the show and
talk about their business and, Ithink, more importantly, their
origin story, right, thebackground behind it, how they
got there where they werePlatform was so successful, he
(06:49):
started offering it to clients, ultimately to kind of help
expand their businesses.
And I kind of took the mantleshere and I've really taken grasp
on this whole podcast platformand it's really evolved.
I've done quite a bit of themand we got to talking and you
expressed the fact that youthought it would be nice to
educate the community out thereand I've always been fascinated
(07:11):
with science myself and some ofthe things that you're doing,
some of the stuff that you'reinvolved with.
This whole idea of how youroral health is linked to your
overall wellbeing was justreally fascinating to me.
So we kind of decided to teamup here and bring this message
out to the community at large, and I'm really excited to be
here with you on this journeyand to share your knowledge from
(07:35):
the medical side.
And then what I have to offeris a, I guess, on the consumer
side, and just the person livinghere, and this is gonna be
really fun, brother.
Dr. Alex (07:44):
Yeah, I'm stoked man.
Some of the things that we'regonna be talking about are
really really fascinating, andfrom the effects of periodontal
disease on cardiovascular health, which is something that we're
learning tons about, to how arelike, for instance, episode two
(08:11):
I'm super excited about Did youknow that the human jawbone is
shrinking Like.
That is fascinating stuff, andI can't wait to talk about the
reasons why, like the sciencebehind it, and it's just going
to be a really fun ride then.
Jeremy Wolf (08:28):
Yeah, I had no idea
to say that wasn't on my radar
as an understatement, right?
Some of the stuff that I wasreading and researching and you
have to audience, you have toexcuse me, I am a layperson, so
a lot of this medical jargon isgoing to be over my head, but
that's what we have Dr Semidehere to clarify for us.
But I've always been a well, Ishouldn't say always.
(08:48):
Certainly, as I've gotten olderI've been more of a student,
right?
I always say that if I, the me,now went back to college, I
would get so much more out of it, because I really enjoy
learning and studying right now, whereas in college all I
enjoyed was kind of drinking andpartying.
Dr. Alex (09:03):
It's a real shame,
right Like the youth is wasted
on the young.
It'd be nice to be able to goback and have a mandatory
four-year period and you've toldyour life where you have to go
back and learn stuff.
Jeremy Wolf (09:15):
I would be the one
in class every day, on time,
with my laptop in front of me,with my notebook completely
honed in on the professor, staying after class engaging
them.
Maybe I should go back toschool, who knows?
Oh goodness, all right, man.
Well, look, I think that was agood opening set to stage and I
(09:39):
am looking forward to get intothis whole idea of the shrinking
human jaw.
So we'll pick that up onanother segment.
All right, everyone, thanks fortuning in and we shall catch
you on the next episode.
Keep smiling.
See you soon, thank you forjoining us on Word of Mouth.
(09:59):
Remember a healthy smile is areflection of your well-being.
Until next time, keep smilingand caring for your dental
health.
We'll be back soon with moredental insights.
