I am joined by actress Kanako Nakano who I discovered through White Pearl, a play about a fictional skin-whitening cosmetics company. In this episode we’re talking about colourism, the prejudice based on skintone usually with a preference for lighter skin. We share our Asian experiences of colourism and how I was encouraged to keep out of the sun so I don’t tan. What are your experiences with Asian beauty standards and colourism? We also explore Kanako’s international theatre work, skin care routines, wasteful packaging, cultural belonging and finding our voice. Are Asians less likely to speak up and represent ourselves? Now she has been living in the UK longer than in Japan, what are the cultural differences?
