Ren Black, homicide detective of the Yokai Detective Agency in Darkness Falls, has been plagued since the night he lost his partner. Over a year of isolation and nightmares had him trapped within himself, until an unexpected visit from his boss. With a new agent coming in, Black learns that the case he'd been unable to close has a new lead. Will Detective Black be able to put the past behind him to bring this case to a close?
As Akashi is left to deal with Black on his own...Sashiro and Victor make a call on their way back to the agency's office. Just who is this voice on the other end?

We rejoin Black and Akashi as they are ready to depart for Nantucket, but happen upon what was left of the security team from the local lab, and Akashi finally lets Black in on some of his past.
Meetings happen, both past and present. Warnings are given, but not heeded. The tale of three brothers begins...
