Speaker 1 (00:01):
hello, hello, hello everyone, and welcome back to
you only go once.
I am here with my lovely, delightful, charming co-host,
eileen grimes, and we are heretoday with a special
announcement.
So this is going to be aone-off episode because we are
announcing that we are going onwhat we are describing as a

(00:24):
summer sabbatical.
Eileen and I are never ones tosit and chill out at any given
time, so we have quite a numberof things in the fire, so to
speak, and we're very excitedand passionate about all of the
things that are happening and wewant to just kind of allow for

(00:46):
that space, and sometimes youhave to do that.
We believe in you Only Go Oncepodcast, we believe in the
stories that we've been able toshare and we want to come back
with that same passion.
But there are some things wekind of need to, you know, get
out into the universe firstbefore we can do that.
So we'll probably see you againat the end of September or

(01:07):
you'll hear from us again fromthe end of September, but we're
going to spend the next fewminutes just kind of sharing
what we've been working on inour little world.
So, eileen, I'm going to askyou to kick it off.
Oh, my goodness, yes, so onethank you for such a lovely
introduction.
It's one of my favorite thingswhen we introduce each other,

(01:27):
just to hear the differentadjectives we gotta get to
describe each other, and andthey're genuine, they're
completely genuine, and so sweetand I love it so much, yeah.
So, oh boy, oh boy, this summeris going to be jam-packed, for,
I mean, it has been.
Let's just be really honest here.

(01:48):
It's been pretty, pretty busywith a lot of different things
happening and I mean even one ofthose, including finalizing my
divorce.
I've been, you know, kind ofgoing through some of that and
finding that space for me andlearning what that looks like.
And then, within that, Iapplied to this amazing program

(02:10):
here in Spokane.
This Terrain is this wonderfulgroup supporting artists in the
Spokane area and they had acreative enterprises program and
I decided that with that Iwanted to start my own new
podcast.
So excited, so excited head on.

(02:48):
And you know we joke that Ialways bring in these people
that are psychics or have theselike intuitive abilities and
different things like that, andthere's something that I'm drawn
to within that space and withpeople like that, and that's
really sort of some of theavenue of where I'm going with
this new podcast is reallydiving deeply into that.
So it's called Mystical MayhemMakers and we're really digging

(03:10):
into those things which, as manyof you know, back in 2020, I
wrote my own eulogy and havealso been on my own healing path
since then with a lot of thethings I've dealt with in life
and you know this findingamazing intuitive therapists

(03:30):
that I've gone to and doingsomatic work and having amazing
teacher my dance teacher that Igo to that has taught me so much
.
And I'm actually enrolled in apsychedelic practitioners
program with the SynthesisInstitute and actually finishing

(03:51):
that up and finishing thatprogram up in July and have
started my own somatic coachingprogram and work specifically
with women.
So all of those things combinedreally wanted to make headway
there and really put in the timeoutside of the million other
things that I'm doing to reallyget this up and running, because

(04:13):
I really feel like sharingthese people that have been
amazing in my life and havesupported me through my journey
of healing and wholeness livesand have supported me through my
journey of healing andwholeness and then learning from
others that I have yet to evenspeak to is really worth the
time to bring out into the world, because I know that it's

(04:34):
something that gives otherpeople an opportunity to find
their own wholeness, and that'swhat I want to do with.
This summer is really kickingthat off.
I have an intro episode out nowand we'll have full episodes
out starting in July.
So, yeah, so a lot of thingsgoing on, and I'm just grateful
for you, cheryl, because youknow I've talked about this too,

(04:56):
and that this doesn't mean thispodcast is over, because there
is so much that happens herethat is different from what I'm
sharing in that space.
And this is not an end to thiseither.
There are still so many morestories.
I know that we're meant toshare and just having the space
together, like we've beencreating spaces together for

(05:18):
years at this point, and thisone feels like a really good one
that I certainly know we cancontinue to grow and continue to
foster, and having the break tobe able to get some of these
other things together.
I know you'll share in just aminute too, but really getting
these other things up andrunning so that we can then step

(05:39):
back into this just makes themost sense right now.
So, and then, alongside that,I'm going to be going out to the
river.
We have some great rivers andpools and stuff here, and being
able to have that time with mykids is really one of the
priorities as well.
It was funny I was talking, myson recently was saying oh, mom,

(06:00):
they just got out of school acouple weeks ago and oh well,
don't you?
What do you get out for summerbreak?
Well, oh, buddy, I know, sosweet, so sweet, exactly like,
well, that's not happening.
Um, but, uh, you know just the, they want to spend time and so

(06:24):
being able to once I finish myleadership development work
during the day, during myfull-time job which is amazing
also in getting to supporthuman-centric leaders and
culture and organization doingthat and then being able to go
to the local pool or going overto the river before we have

(06:46):
smoke season, which is a seasonhere now with all the wildfires
that happen, right.
So trying to just enjoy thatand, every once in a while, even
though it doesn't sound like it, trying to sit and breathe for
just a little bit, um, but yeah.
So those, those are the thingsI'm up to and I'm super excited

(07:06):
about it and, like I said, eversince 2020 and writing that
eulogy, I just have been movingin a way that makes an impact in
the world that I want to seeand I want to be a part of and I
want to leave behind for mykids, and that's that's what I

(07:27):
get to do with this podcast.
That's what I'm getting to doin a different way with the
other podcast and, yeah, I justit's just really incredibly
important to me and so gratefulfor you and our listeners that
are a part of this and ourguests that we've had and just

(07:48):
really amazed to continue beingable to do this with everyone.
Yeah, with that, I'm going topass it to you, cheryl, because
you have some really cool thingsgoing on that I cannot wait and
I've been so lucky to have somesneak peeks into but really
want you to share the work thatyou're doing and what's

(08:11):
happening for you this summer.
Thank you, eileen, and thankyou for sharing everything.
I feel like your son is a bit ofa trailblazer in how we need to
be as adults, as grownups, because there is something to be
said about rest and rechargeand then rejuvenation, right,
and he has constantly been theone that's kind of smacked us

(08:31):
about the heads and said whatabout this?
And it's just very.
You know it comes from a verychildlike practical sense.
And yet there he is kind ofgoing, hey, like when do you get
your summertime off?
And it's like oh, oh, buddy, listen, I'm an adult.
And then you realize you'reright, I'm an adult, I can do
stuff, I can do this kind ofstuff right.

(08:52):
And before I get into my stuff,I just want to say we're going
to be putting out a resourcessheet for this and what I would
do is anybody that is in thecreative or intuitive space that
Eileen's solo project ispodcasting and having adventures
on.
We're going to ask you for thisbit of a call to action here.
If there are people out therewho have a story, who would like

(09:16):
to have these wholesomediscussions with Eileen, please,
please, please reach out to her.
You know she's on social media.
We'll make sure that we giveyou the links to her new podcast
and it's going to be anexciting time and Eileen is a
she's an intuitiveconversationalist, so you will
feel right at ease when you havethese conversations with her.

(09:36):
So I highly encourage you to dothis.
All right, thank you, you'rewelcome.
So Eileen did lead up to acouple of things and I think my
I'm in my writing era.
I guess you could say I startedoff last year trying to process
, or the year before.
Now it's been yeah, it's been awhile.
My mom died in 2022 and it hada profound impact on me and how

(10:01):
I deal with grief and gratitude, because people came out in
droves to make sure that myfamily and me were okay during
that time and I will be forevergrateful for that.
And in response, I had penned abook which I never in a million
years thought I would bewriting poetry.
But hey, here we are and thatbook was called my Stay with the
Sisters and that's been.

(10:22):
I've heard so many stories frompeople about how they connected
with the words.
They felt like they had a senseof community around all of the
different emotions that comewith the loss of a loved one.
With that I kind of been, I'vebeen inspired to continue
writing.
So on September 24th of thisyear, I have a new book coming

(10:43):
out and it's called A Place noFlowers Grow.
This is a departure from thecommunity piece and this is more
poetic folktale.
The three main characters, octavia, rowan and Fox, and

(11:05):
their fates collide.
There's a lot going on with itand I'm very excited to have
people read the book and kind ofconnect back to the days where
people would kind of sit aroundcampfires and tell stories,
whether they were ghost storiesor just fun stories or things
like that.
That was always the sense thatI had in my brain when this book

(11:27):
came out.
So it is available forpre-order on Amazoncom and I
just released the pre-order forthe e-book version as well.
So that's coming.
I fought the e-book, I'll behonest, for a while, because I
had a Dickens of a time withformatting the first book, my
State with the Sisters, as ane-book and I thought, well, I'm

(11:49):
never doing that again.
And then a couple people askedlike where's the e-book for this
?
And I thought, often, good atthat.
So I retained the help of aprofessional who was also the
book cover designer and the bookdesigner itself, the interior
format and whatnot.

(12:10):
So I'm excited about that.
September 24th.
Then, in addition to that, Ialso have my very first
children's book coming out andthat will be out in November and
I'm working with the lovelyillustrator, nicole Elwood on
that and it is called Barry andthe Big Jump.
And Barry is a jumping spiderand I know people's initial

(12:33):
reactions to spiders are likethe charmers of the spider world
, like they dance, they have bigexpressive eyes, they tend to
be curious and I think that forkids that are saying I can do

(12:53):
this, I can do this, there isthe power of family in that,
there's the power of believingin yourself, in that, and
there's a power of accomplishingthings.
So I'm also very excited tohave that come out into the
world.
And then, who knows, for 2025.
But for right now, my brain canonly handle two books because,
to be frank, I am exhausted.

(13:13):
For anybody who's everpublished a book or have seen
Bookstagram, you know that themarketing piece of that is no
joke and I've been doing most ofit solo.
I'm so grateful for the PoetryClub with Shelby Lee.
Shelby Lee was my editor, wasmy primary editor on both books.
Actually, my Say With theSisters and A Place no Flowers

(13:34):
Grow, and she's built thiswonderful community and we
really have a kinship and I justwanted to say I am so grateful
to the women and men that werepart of that community, to the
people who were part of thatcommunity, and they've been very
supportive and the support isalways reciprocal.
Again, this is our time.
We are always very proud of ourguests and we will shamelessly

(13:58):
support whatever they have outthere.
And this is kind of our time totake our own medicine and
self-promote.
So for both of us we willprovide links and everything
like that to what's coming andwe're just.
We need this time to recharge.
I think and I personally loveyou Only Go Once, because number

(14:18):
one Eileen and I get to seeeach other on a regular basis
because I'm in Philly.
Number one Eileen and I get tosee each other on a regular
basis because I'm in Philly, thearea she's in, the Spokane area
, and that time to connect witha friend is so far and few
between when you've got along-distance friendship.
So grateful for this space tobe able to do that.
And I'm also so always in aweof the people who are like yeah,

(14:40):
we would be pleased as bunch toshare our stories with you and
we've had wonderful guests.
And just always we walk awaywith something where we're like
we did not know that or wow, that just felt good.
And I hope, dear listeners, that you also get that sense
when you listen to our episodesand we'll be back again with

(15:03):
those stories.
But now we are telling our ownstories and we hope that.
We hope that you enjoy thoseequally as much.
Yeah, and I do want to sayhaving the absolute pleasure of
supporting you, cheryl, throughthrough your writing journey.
I've been so grateful.
I've been so grateful.

(15:25):
Outside of that, I, yes, andy'all, need to get these books
because they're fantastic.
I, I, have been able to readevery single one and for those
who haven't had a chance to read, my stay with his sisters.
It's, I know, my friend, andthis feels like a part, it felt

(15:46):
like a part of you and it's.
It was something that dove inso deeply and touched me in a
way that just made me understandyou more and was so universal
to so many people who've everexperienced grief.
And then this next book, aPlace when no Flowers Grow, like

(16:08):
you said, it's like thattroubadour.
I mean I know you're not goingaround singing it, but there is
that feeling and I almost wouldlove to have you do a reading of
that for me with it, becauseanytime I read your work it's
always in your voice and yourwords, because I can just hear
you talking about them.
But you need to get these books.

(16:29):
They're beautiful and wonderfuland so unique, and so you, even
with them being in so many sortof different areas.
They're so you and they're justbeautiful pieces that anyone
would be lucky to be able tohave in their home.
So I highly recommend youpicking these up and
pre-ordering where you're ableto.

(16:49):
Just quickly, barry, is that upfor pre-order?
It's not up for pre-order.
No, it's not.
It's not even in my printdistribution item yet we're
still working through theillustrations and everything
like that.
And yeah, even that this isexciting because I've never been
part of a children's bookbefore and it is.

(17:10):
So.
We've had our guests on right,we've had ground crew editorials
Jackie and Arianne, right, andthey, they really helped me put
things into focus.
And again, I always think of Ithink of your son, I think of my
niece, I think of everybody whoI've known who have had littles
, their attention to play andinteraction and is so important

(17:37):
and especially during thoseformative years where the
imaginations are just explodingright, and it's always important
.
What I'm learning is withchildren's books is you've got
to make them part of the story, and I don't think I truly
appreciated that until Jackieand Arianne kind of stepped in
and were like try this, and itjust enriched the story so much

(18:02):
so now we're working onillustrations and Nicole is a
force of nature, so she's she'sgiven me storyboarding pieces
and I'm like, just go like thisall looks awesome.
I'm super excited about it.
Just go in that vein, if I cango, going to look like a graphic
novel, I know I'm so excited.
So I'm working right now.

(18:32):
I'm finalizing details with theperson that's going to do the
artwork and my brain is kind ofexploding, because it really was
.
We're just going to throw aHail Mary and see what happens,
and I was very fortunate thatnot only did this person respond
, but they responded with suchenthusiasm that it just felt

(18:53):
like I can't not do it now, likeI've put it out into the
universe and I can't not do itnow.
So I'm very excited to see whathe does with this.
So more to come on that one in2025.
I hope to have that out a yearfrom now.
We'll see what happens then.
I'm so excited for that.
I can't wait.

(19:13):
And please understand that thepaperback edition of this is
gorgeous.
Islam Fareed was the artist forthis and he did the book cover.
It is so haunting and invitingand, like I said, gather around
a fire pit, grab your pillowsand your blankets, and I hope
you enjoy reading this folklorebecause I really enjoyed writing

(19:38):
it and in the format that it is.
Okay, my friend, I think thatcovers everything and again,
we'll send out resources when weget this one published and out
for you to listen to.
But on behalf of my lovely, lovely co-host, eileen Grimes
and myself, this concludes ourepisode of you.

(19:58):
Only Go Once and we'll see you.
I hope everybody enjoys theirsummers, but again, our call to
action to all of you are tocheck out some of the stuff that
we're doing, because we'rereally excited about it and
passionate about it and we hopeyou enjoy it, because we want
you to enjoy it as much as we'reenjoying doing these things.
Oh, take care, friends, listeners and even prior guests,

(20:25):
if you're listening.
Thank you so much and we willsee you in a couple months.
Take care everyone.
Bye.
