SPEAKER_00 (00:07):
Welcome to the Young
Hair Podcast.
I'm your host, Dr.
Wayne Young.
I'll summarize all the latestand best proven advances and
advice for you to get the mostout of your hair restoration.
Each episode I'll cover the mostcommon questions about hair
restoration and also the bestways to get the most out of your
(00:28):
procedure.
I keep it real easy, so let'sget started.
and welcome back everyone sowhat are we going to talk about
this week we are going to talkabout the trico test actually
the genetic hair test is thereonly one test that i know of
(00:50):
that can elucidate certainfactors related to your hair
loss so i was one of the firstclinics to perform this test in
Australia about three years ago,and we've done hundreds over the
years.
So, the TRICA test analyzesgenetic variations, SNPs, single
(01:14):
nucleotide polymorphisms, inyour DNA that are linked to how
your body responds to hair lossand treatments.
Here's what's typicallyassessed.
Number one, genes linked toangiogenic alopecia, pattern
hair loss.
It checks for variations thatinfluence how sensitive your
(01:37):
hair follicles are to DHT,dihydrotestosterone, the main
hormone driving male and femalepattern hair loss.
And this helps predict whetherblocking DHT with finasteride or
dutasteride is likely to workwell for you.
(01:58):
Two, genes affecting drugmetabolism.
It looks at how your bodyprocesses medications like
finasteride, minoxidil, bothoral and topical, and
dutasteride.
For example, some people havevariations that make them slow
metabolizers of minoxidil.
(02:21):
So topical minoxidil might workpoorly for them, but oral
minoxidil might work betternumber three genes related to
inflammation some people have agenetic tendency for more
inflammation in the scalp whichcan make hair loss worse and if
(02:46):
this shows up anti-inflammatorysupport like certain shampoos
supplements or exosome PRPtreatments may be more important
for you.
Four, genes involved in bloodflow and vasodilation.
(03:06):
So, minoxidil works partly byimproving blood flow to hair
follicles.
The test can show whether yourgenes support good response to
minoxidil or whether you mayneed an alternative or
additional treatment.
So what do you get in yourreport?
(03:27):
Look, it's a very thoroughreport, but this is what you'll
usually find out.
Your genetic variations, whatthey mean for your risk of hair
loss progression, whichtreatments are recommended,
which ones may have loweffectiveness, and what dosage
(03:48):
or type may be best.
And then practical advice aboutwhich particular micronutrients,
such as vitamin D, selenium, biotin, zinc, may be beneficial
to get supplementation.
(04:09):
And who should consider gettinga test?
The common question is, Whenshould I do it?
Should I get one?
Why should I get one?
Here's my advice.
If you're under 30 and juststarted to notice hair loss, the
(04:31):
test can help you plan early andavoid wasting time on treatments
that might not work for you.
If you've already tried standardtreatments but aren't seeing
results, the test may explainwhy and help us tweak your plan.
if you're worried about sideeffects from medications like
(04:53):
finasteride, your genetic resultcan show whether you're likely
to benefit at all or whetherother options are worth trying
first.
And if you're considering a hairtransplant, I often recommend
doing a trichotest first.
Why?
Because surgery doesn't stopfuture hair loss.
(05:16):
It's best to pair it with theright medical plan for your
long-term results.
So the key takeaway, trichotestdoesn't diagnose a disease.
It predicts how your body mayrespond to different treatments
so that I can come up with thebest plan for your medical care.
(05:42):
How do we do the trichotest?
Well, look at the very simplebuccal swab, then the sample
that's sent off to Texas andthis will take about two weeks
to get back to me the report andthen we'll book in a
consultation and go through thevery thorough report and then
(06:03):
come up with the appropriateplan for you and if you're
concerned about your hair lossand how the medications will
respond this is the only testthat you should consider.
Well, if you have any otherquestions or you'd like to book
(06:27):
in for a trichotest, please doso.
So we'll chat soon.
