For the Justice card, I HAD TO talk to Maria Minnis, the liberatory Tarot goddess and author of Tarot for the Hard Work: An Archetypal Journey to Confront Racism and Imagine Collective Healing,

Maria's book, which came out early this year (2023), explores each Tarot archetype within the Major Arcana through the lens of social justice work, offering reflection questions, recommended actions, and deeper study to help you grow and embrace your agency to initiate change.

The Justice card is all about agency and action — particularly the actions that flow from our values, and so Maria and I talked about:

  • The Justice archetype, its symbolism, and what it means
  • How Justice MUST BE rooted in action, not just thought
  • The origins of Maria's book project and how it springs from her own social justice evolution
  • Bringing nuance and context to our notions of justice
  • The importance of communal engagement, curiosity, listening, and noticing in activism work, particularly for folks with greater privilege
  • Reframing ideas around hierarchical leadership
  • The role of creativity in social justice work
  • Watching our elder leaders fail us (we recorded this during the GOP convention and before Biden dropped out of the presidential race)
  • How youth offers creativity and fresh imagination for liberation efforts
  • Why it's important to fight for our creative impulse and our sense of integrity and values
  • The scales of justice as linked forces of creation and destruction
  • What kink has to do with Tarot and liberation, and what it teaches us about communication, pleasure, and consent
  • Maintaining levity in our activism efforts

In a world that continues to spiral toward authoritarianism and environmental collapse, our voices, activism, visibility, and  power is needed more than ever. Find inspiration and guidance in this rich conversation with an incredible mystic and change-maker!
