Have you ever felt let down by God?

You're not alone in those feelings.

Many of us unconsciously slip into viewing Jesus as a cosmic vending machine – insert prayer, receive desired outcome.

But when life doesn't unfold according to our expectations, disappointment and doubt naturally follow.

The truth is both challenging and liberating: Jesus never promised a trouble-free life. What He guaranteed us was His presence through every trial.

He says in John 16:33, "In this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world."

This shift in perspective transforms everything.

Perhaps the most profound blessings aren't those that change our circumstances but those that change our hearts – peace during chaos, joy amid sorrow, strength when we feel we can't continue.

Even Jesus experienced a "no" from the Father in Gethsemane, yet He still trusted. Trade expectations for trust, believing that God is working all things for your good.

This isn't wishful thinking – it's solid, anchored hope based on who God is, not what He does for us. Unanswered prayers often lead to unexpected grace.

It reminds us of Tim Keller's powerful insight: "Jesus gives us what we would have asked for if we knew everything He knows."

Listen, if you've ever thought God would do more
for you by now, or if you'veever wondered why didn't God
answer my prayer.
We are really glad you are heretoday.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Oh yeah, because sometimes I mean even without
realizing it we start to thinkof Jesus like a wish granting
genie.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, Now let's say this, let's say this please know
that you are not alone in doingthat.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
No, and it's also important to know that God
doesn't hate you because hedidn't answer a certain prayer
that you've prayed.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
It's easy to think that following Jesus means life
is gonna be great.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Oh yeah, like blessings are just gonna start
popping up all over the placeevery single day Promotions at
work, sicknesses are healed, relationships restored all the
things we've ever prayed for areall tied up in a nice little
bow.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
I mean, after all, he can do miracles, right?

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Yeah, well, what happens when he doesn't?

Speaker 2 (01:09):
What happens when you prayed for healing and it
didn't come, when you begged fora relationship to work and it
fell apart.
When you tithe faithfully andyour bank account's still in the
red.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
So see, that's when you might start to feel like God
has let you down.
He didn't show up when youneeded him.
Maybe you even feel like youmight start giving up on God.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Listen.
If that's where you are rightnow, hear this.
Your disappointment is valid.
Your pain is real, yourfrustration's real.
God isn't afraid of yourquestions.
It's okay to feel the way youdo.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Yeah, it is.
I mean, honestly, it happens toevery single one of us.
You know, we get frustratedwith God and, maybe without
realizing it, we start to feellike, well, jesus exists to make
my life easier.
And then, when things get hardor prayers aren't answered just
the way we want them, we startto get frustrated with him.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
The truth is, jesus didn't come to hand out wishes.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
He didn't promise to make life easy or give us
everything we wanted.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
No, here's what he promised.
He promised that he would beeverything we needed.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
John 16, 33 even says in this world you will have
trouble, but take heart, I haveovercome the world.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Those are the words of Jesus and then notice what he
didn't say.
He didn't say you'll get everyprayer answer just the way you
want.
He said, yeah, you're going tohave trouble in life, but he
also said you'll have him.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Yeah, he is going to be there every step of the way.
See, that's the blessing thatnever fails.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
And sometimes the greatest gifts from Jesus aren't
the ones that change ourcircumstances, are the ones that
change our hearts.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Yeah, like peace in the middle of a storm, or joy
when nothing makes sense, strength to keep going when all
you want to do is just lay downand give up.
See, these are the blessingsthat nothing in this world can
explain.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Suppose Jesus gave us what we wanted when we wanted
it, it'd be like a vendingmachine, you know, not a savior.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
No, Jesus sees past what we want.
He actually sees what we need.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Reminds me of a quote from Tim Keller.
Maybe you've heard it Jesusgives us what we would have
asked for if we knew everythinghe knows.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
So, look, if you're in a season of waiting, of
unanswered questions, ofwondering if Jesus actually
cares about you, remember whathe did on the cross?

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Jesus didn't spare himself from suffering.
He stepped into it with us.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Think about that.
Jesus knows pain, he knows loss.
Jesus knows what it is to prayFather, take this cup from me
and to actually hear a no inreturn.
Even with that no from hisfather, god said no.
Jesus still trusted.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
And because he did, we now have the greatest
blessing of all forgiveness, eternal life and real hope that
isn't based on everything in ourlives going right.
You know, jesus won the victoryover all of the pain of this
life.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
So, wherever you are today, however you are feeling,
can we encourage to trade yourexpectations for trust?

Speaker 2 (04:07):
So lay your disappointments at his feet and
believe, even when you don't seeit, that he is working things.
All things, yes, all things foryour good and for his glory.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Okay, that's not just hope, that's a solid, anchored
hope.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Well, we hope you've been encouraged today.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
